Week Twelve- Graffiti as a Voice: The Art of Comuna 13
Tumblr media
While traveling through Colombia, I took a detour to Medellín, a city I’d always been curious about, especially as someone with roots in the more rural parts of the country. I was drawn to its energy, but what I found in Comuna 13 went far beyond what I expected.
Once marked by conflict, this condensed hillside neighborhood has transformed into a living canvas of resilience. Walking its steep streets, surrounded by murals and music, I felt the weight of its past and the power of its present. Every painted wall seemed to speak, not just of hardship, but of a community’s decision to rise and reclaim its story.

Comuna 13 was more than just a colorful backdrop, it was a living testament to resilience. The murals weren’t just art; they were bold, unfiltered voices, telling stories of identity, loss, and survival in the face of political, gang, and drug-related violence.
A Portrait of Pain, Power, and Perseverance

A mural depicting "Operation Orion", a large military deployment that caused significant civilian casualties and displacement within the community.
The woman at the center, with her face partially covered and wood grain skin, seems to embody both strength and suffering. The hummingbirds around her — often symbols of hope and endurance — contrast with the backdrop of bullet holes in the wall, a chilling reminder of the violence this community has endured, especially during events like Operation Orion. The bright colors, especially the vibrant leaves and bold strokes, speak to a transformation — from trauma to expression, from silence to storytelling.
This kind of artwork doesn’t just decorate the walls; it reclaims them. It’s a visual record of memory and survival — a way for the people of Comuna 13 to process and assert their history on their own terms.
Where the Walls Speak: Art as a Right, Not a Privilege
What struck me most was how deeply the community supports and protects this art form. The young artists of Comuna 13 don’t just tell their stories through graffiti — they’re shaping a visual language that reflects resilience, pride, and change. Here, street art isn’t considered vandalism; it’s embraced. It’s encouraged. And it’s entirely local. If the city wants to commission a new mural, the first priority is always to hire artists from Comuna 13 itself. If none are available, then they open the opportunity to other Colombian artists — but the focus remains on uplifting voices from within.

Our tour guide shared something I found particularly fascinating about the tagging culture in the neighborhood. Anyone, even outsiders, can tag a wall, a stair, or any available surface. But if a graffiti artist from Comuna 13 decides to paint over it, reclaiming that space with their own name or design, it’s entirely within their right to do so. It’s an unspoken rule, but one that speaks volumes: this art belongs to the people who live here. They’ve earned the right to represent their own streets, their own stories, in their own way.
Reflecting on my time in Comuna 13, I realized that its transformation is not just physical but deeply symbolic of the strength of its people. The vibrant murals and bustling streets are not merely artistic expressions; they are bold declarations of survival and hope. This experience reminded me that even the most painful histories can give rise to powerful rebirths. Through resilience and unity, a community can reshape its identity. Medellín, and particularly Comuna 13, serves as a profound reminder of how spaces hold stories of struggle and triumph, and ultimately, how it is the people who shape the narrative.
