Our Organizing Wins in 2023

Over the past year, EWOC had its busiest year yet with some truly extraordinary organizing wins. These include EWOC’s direct support in 14 successful union recognition wins and 15 more workplaces currently in a union drive. We’ve also connected 65 workplace campaigns and represented more than 7,000 workers to outside unions.

Our 2023 Campaigns
These are some of the incredible stories from campaigns in 2023.
Residents at Beth-Israel Deaconess hospital in Boston ran a petition campaign with support from EWOC volunteers. That campaign garnered a supermajority of signatures in less than a week, and management conceded to the overwhelming pressure. They won a $10,000-per-year housing stipend and additional benefits for the 700 residents on staff.
Twenty-six workers at a Juiceland warehouse in Austin, Texas, won a $2-per-hour pay increase after marching on their boss.
Workers at The Basement, an escape room in Los Angeles, worked with EWOC volunteers to learn the foundations of organizing. They then went on to work with Actors Equity and become the first unionized escape room in the U.S.
In New York City, workers at Hex&Co., a gaming cafe, worked with EWOC volunteers for more than a year to develop organizing skills before connecting with a union. Their successful union drive with Workers United sparked a wave of game store union organizing across New York City. Two more stores have since announced union drives.
In Princeton, New Jersey, 19 workers at Labyrinth Books, an independent bookstore, are unionizing with the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU) after working with EWOC for over a year to develop their organizing skills.
Workers at Barboncino in Brooklyn worked with EWOC volunteers one-on-one over the course of many months. They learned and applied their organizing skills to become the first unionized pizzeria in New York City. Leaders from this campaign have even become organizing volunteers with EWOC. They use their experience and skills to support other service workers interested in organizing across the city.
2023 Special Events
In addition to EWOC’s organizing support, we had a record year of training. About 480 workers participated in our foundational training program. This four-week program runs six times a year at no cost to participants. We also put on two “Train the Trainers” events, growing from 10 to 55 foundational program facilitators. This has greatly helped expand our capacity to support workers interested in our training.
In 2023, EWOC launched a fellowship program designed as a follow-up to the foundational training, specifically for workers engaged in ongoing workplace campaigns. Participants were invited to apply with their co-workers. We welcomed 49 participants split into four cohort sessions, each lasting six weeks.
EWOC also put on a number of events in 2023. We discussed many labor topics, including salting, corporate research and power mapping, the Cemex decision, and organizing in remote workplaces. Jane MacAlevey joined EWOC for training on winning a first contract, and members of UAWD and TDU came to speak about the power of strikes and contract campaigns. Adam Conover attended an EWOC volunteer call and gave us a shout-out on his show.
In 2023, EWOC released a 26-part video series entitled “Unionizing 101.” These short videos were designed to make unionizing accessible and fun. They broke down core organizing questions like leader identification, power mapping, and more! These videos have more than 6,000 views on YouTube alone.

Hospital at Home-An Idea Whose time has Come
Long before fears of infection from the coronavirus made people wary, hospitals were often not the best place to be treated and recover. Awareness of the risks of infections and the debilitating impacts of hospital stays, particularly on patients who are frail, have cognitive impairments, or other vulnerabilities, prompted Johns Hopkins University, to establish the first hospital-at-home program in the United States 20 years ago.
The model, which offers people who would typically require hospitalization to treat problems such as acute pneumonia, dehydration, or exacerbations of conditions like heart failure or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) the option of receiving acute-level care in their homes, has been one of the most studied health care delivery reforms.
In recent years, a handful of U.S. health systems have launched similar programs, either because their hospitals are operating at capacity and/or they’ve taken on financial risk for the total costs of patients’ care and thus benefit from delivering services in a lower-cost setting. The Veterans Health Administration, which controls both payment and care delivery, has funded its own hospital at home program as have some health systems that have their own health plans and/or substantial numbers of patients in accountable care organizations or managed care plans.  
Several startup companies now offer logistical support and technology to facilitate hospital-at-home programs, as well as help contracting with commercial payers. Broader spread, however, has been stymied by the fact that Medicare does not pay for acute services provided outside of hospitals for fee-for-service beneficiaries.
As in so many parts of health care, the COVID-19 pandemic has catalyzed change: not only has it created a clear rationale for avoiding hospitals when possible, it has prompted Medicare to allow providers to bill for acute treatments delivered in surgery centers, hotels, or other non-hospital facilities. Some are hoping waivers tied to the Hospital Without Walls initiative will open the door for Medicare to pay for acute care in homes, too.
Several large hospital systems have begun their own hospital at home programs:
Mount Sinai Health System (NY)- Mount Sinai Health System launched a hospital-at-home demonstration in 2014, funded by a $9.6 million grant from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation. Leaders were drawn to the model as a way to relieve pressure on their inpatient wards, which even before the pandemic were routinely filled beyond capacity.
After the three year Medicare funded project ended Mount Sinai in 2017 set up a joint venture with Contessa Health, a Nashville-based startup launched in 2015 whose founders sought to make home hospitalizations financially sustainable by contracting with health plans willing to pay for them, namely Medicare Advantage plans, Medicaid managed care plans, and commercial health plans.
Tufts Medical Center (MA)- Like Mount Sinai, Tufts Medical Center in Boston was bursting at the seams, pre-COVID-19; it routinely had to turn down requests to accept patients from other hospitals because no beds were free. To help expand access, leaders had begun partnership discussions with Medically Home, another hospital-at-home company founded in 2017 after eight years of research and development. 
Medically Home partners with its clients’ clinicians and also hires physicians and nurse practitioners, who work from a central hub from which they use remote monitoring, video, and other telehealth tools to oversee patients’ care. They confer with Tufts Medical Center’s attending physicians to make sure patients are good candidates for the program. Advanced practice providers, paramedics, nurses, phlebotomists, technicians, therapists, and other staff visit acutely ill patients in their homes, providing infusion, lab tests, imaging, nutrition, translation, and other services. 
Medically Home draws on its health system partners and community resources, including local paramedics and equipment suppliers, to build a virtual hospital. 
Home-based models that offer coordinated episodes of care — including for emergent, acute, and post-acute needs — could be of particular benefit to patients who have frequent emergency department visits or hospitalizations.
CMS’s Hospital Without Walls initiative could provide a means by which hospitals can provide some care in homes, but it’s unclear how long the waiver will remain in place. To qualify as acute care, hospital providers need to deliver home services themselves and must deliver a certain level of services (e.g., oxygen, durable medical equipment, radiology, and meals).
In the short term, spread of the model may depend on the course of the coronavirus and hospitals’ desires to prepare for potential surges. In the longer term, it may find broader interest if value-based payments gain broader traction.

The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Metaverse Enterprise” specifies the following three categories of technologies that define the Metaverse:
Virtual worlds (M-worlds);
Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR) and Mixed Reality (MR); Web3 and virtual assets.
Among them, M-worlds is an immersive application that can provide companies with new ways to reach audiences, especially Gen Z users. M-worlds can run on mobile devices as well as PCs and AR/VR headsets.
Web3 is in its early stages, but according to the authors of the BCG Guide, “Web3 is already powering a vibrant virtual asset economy, including Crypto, non-fungible tokens, and smart contracts.”
The counseling firm expects Web3 and Customary monetary exchanges will coincide for years to come .
In fact, the authors also state that “most of the value of the metaverse may ultimately lie not in consumers but in business applications.” These applications may include virtual conferences, training sessions, new product designs, and virtual house tours for potential customers.
Based on expert opinion and extensive research, we were able to narrow the list down to the seven most frequently mentioned technologies that will help drive the Metaverse and its development.
◉ Artificial intelligence
Artificial intelligence plays a central role in the development of robots and chatbots, bringing intelligence to real-world computer vision. However, according to BCG, only 10 percent of companies reported significant AI benefits from their deployments.
The processing power of artificial intelligence can create virtual avatars, enhance the characteristics of digital humans to make them more lifelike, and can be applied to non-player characters who talk to players in game environments.
◉ Internet of Things
The Blockchain Council calls the Internet of Things “a vital pillar of the Metaverse’s infrastructure.” For example, the committee report states that integrating the Metaverse and the Internet of Things could “unlock new opportunities for industrial domains, individual needs, and societal needs.”
IoT will allow virtual spaces to seamlessly access and interact with the real world, while Metaverse will provide 3D user interfaces for clusters of IoT devices, resulting in what the council calls a “user-centric IoT and Metaverse experience”.
For example, in a factory where the digital twin of each machine has sensors, the sensor data can be used to explore the environment and provide feedback.
◉ Extended Reality
AR, VR and MR technologies will change the way businesses visualize and use data by moving from 2D to 3D for more lifelike experiences and digital displays that better synchronize with head movements, BCG said.
When AR glasses become more mainstream, computer vision will help people understand the environment and locate the correct information. And extended reality (XR) is already being used in, for example, Microsoft’s HoloLens, allowing users to experience 3D holographic images.
◉ Brain Computer Interface
The World Economic Forum (WEF) has included the brain-computer interface (BCI) in its list of technologies that will shape the Metaverse, with WEF acknowledging that BCI may be the most far-reaching vision for the Metaverse, as the technology aims to replace traditional control screens and physical hardware . At the same time, WEF also pointed out that the combination of BCI and XR will be positioned as the next computing platform.
◉ 3D modeling and reconstruction
3D reconstructions capture the shape and appearance of real objects and bring the Metaverse to life. The technology includes tools such as 3D modeling to provide 3D frameworks and prototypes of specific processes or products.
According to a report by SkyQuest Technology Consulting, in the long run, the global 3D reconstruction technology market is expected to double in the next few years, reaching approximately $2 billion by 2028.
◉ Space and edge computing
Spatial computing combines AR, VR, and MR to interact with the real world. Edge computing can provide fast response time for user actions that mimic reality, allowing users to immerse themselves in the metaverse. Any kind of space technology, including computer vision, is closely related to the Metaverse.
◉ Blockchain
Today, Gownder said, blockchain doesn’t seem to have much to do with businesses and their employees.
However, there is currently a lot of discussion focused on how to use blockchain technology to protect digital content and data in the Metaverse. Blockchain can make the Metaverse Technology more decentralized and avoid some delays or single points of failure.

Cardiomyopathy is not a uniform disease. Rather, individual genetic defects lead to heart failure in different ways, an international consortium reports in Science.
The molecular and cellular mechanisms that lead to heart failure in people with cardiomyopathy are determined by the specific gene variant that each patient carries, according to newly published research based on the first comprehensive single-cell analysis of cardiac cells from healthy and failing hearts.
The work, reported in the journal Science, was conducted by 53 scientists from six countries in North America, Europe, and Asia.
The study shows that cell type compositions and gene activation profiles change according to the genetic variants. The investigators say the findings can inform the design of targeted therapies that take into account each patient’s underlying gene defect responsible for their particular form of cardiomyopathy.
The team studied 880,000 single heart cells
Examining the genes activated in about 880,000 single cells from 61 failing hearts and 18 healthy donor hearts as reference was a complex endeavor which required an interdisciplinary team. The organs were procured by the Brigham and Woman’s Hospital in Boston, USA, University of Alberta in Canada, the Heart and Diabetes Center North Rhine-Westphalia in Bad Oeynhausen, Ruhr University Bochum in Germany and Imperial College London, UK.
Senior authors who spearheaded the project are Christine Seidman, professor of medicine and genetics at Harvard Medical School and a cardiologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital; Jonathan Seidman, professor of genetics at Harvard Medical School; Norbert Hübner, professor of cardiovascular and metabolic sciences at the Max-Delbrück-Center for Molecular Medicine in the Helmholtz Association (MDC) and Charité — Universitätsmedizin Berlin as well as Dr. Gavin Oudit, University of Alberta, Canada; Professor Hendrik Milting, Heart and Diabetes Center NRW, Bad Oeynhausen, Ruhr University Bochum, Germany; Dr. Matthias Heinig, Helmholtz Munich, Germany; Dr. Michela Noseda of the National Heart and Lung Institute at Imperial College London, UK and Professor Sarah Teichmann, Wellcome Sanger Institute in Cambridge, UK. A disease with many causes
The scientists focused on dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), the most common form of heart failure that leads to heart transplantations. It involves an expansion (dilation) of walls of the heart chamber, especially in the left ventricle, the heart’s main pumping chamber. The muscles of the heart become weakened, compromising its ability to contract and pump blood, which ultimately leads to heart failure. The consortium studied tissues from patients with different genetic mutations that commonly lead to cardiomyopathies. These mutations occurred in proteins with different functions in the heart and the analyses indicate that these triggered different responses.
“We investigated pathogenic gene variants in heart tissue at the single-cell level, which allowed us to map precisely how specific pathogenic variants drive cardiac dysfunction,” says co-senior author Norbert Hübner. “To our knowledge, this is the first such analysis conducted in cardiac tissue, and we hope this approach can be used to study other types of genetic heart diseases.”
The scientists precisely characterized the various mutations in each of the hearts and compared them with each other, as well as with healthy hearts and with hearts in which the causes of dilation and dysfunction were unknown. Each cardiac cell type and the numerous subtypes were analyzed one by one, using single-cell sequencing methods. No lab on its own could deal with the massive amount of data generated, but close collaboration among specialists from different disciplines made it possible to assemble a coherent picture out of each individual piece of the puzzle. This study is also part of the efforts of the international Human Cell Atlas (HCA) consortium, which is aiming to map every cell type in the human body as a basis for both understanding human health and for diagnosing, monitoring, and treating disease.
“Only this level of resolution allows us to see that cardiomyopathies do not uniformly trigger the same pathological pathways,” says co-senior author Christine Seidman. “Rather, different mutations evoked specific and some shared responses that lead to heart failure. These genotype-specific responses point to therapeutic opportunities that may inform the development of precision-targeted interventions,” Seidman says.
Hyperactive connective tissue cells
“For example, we discovered that fibrosis — the abnormal growth of connective tissue — observed in DCM is not caused by an increased number of fibroblasts in the heart,” says Matthias Heinig, who carried out computational analyses. “The number of these cells stays the same. But the existing cells become more active and produce more extracellular matrix, which fills in the space between the connective tissue cells,” Eric Lindberg adds. Thus, rather than overproduction of fibrotic cells, the researchers observed only a shift in the proportion cell subtypes, marked by an increase in the number of fibroblasts specializing in the production of extracellular matrix.
“The phenomenon was especially pronounced in the hearts of patients with a mutated RBM20 gene,” Henrike Maatz explains. This observation was also reflected in the patients’ medical histories. On average, patients with this specific mutation suffered heart failure and needed a transplant much earlier than people with other genetic forms of DCM. Single-cell sequencing revealed a whole series of such genotype-specific differences in dilated hearts.
Specific patterns of change
The analysis also showed that in the hearts of people with arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathies (ACM) — those that cause dangerous heart rhythm disturbances — muscle cells are increasingly replaced by fat and connective tissue cells, particularly in the right ventricle. Although this form of cardiomyopathy can also be caused by a mutation in several genes the team focused its analysis on the gene for the protein plakophilin-2, or PKP2 for short. They compared cell signaling pathways from cells obtained from the right and left ventricles. The findings identify the cause behind increased cell-fat production in the cardiac muscle of people with this type of cardiomyopathy.
“The precise molecular signatures obtained for the highly specialized cells of the heart allowed us to predict cell-to-cell communication pathways,” Michela Noseda says. The team found that different genetic causes of cardiomyopathies were associated with specific aberrations of the cellular communication networks. “This is clear evidence of specified mechanisms driving the disease.”
Finally, the scientists used artificial intelligence to develop a model from all these data. Based on the specific patterns of molecular changes in the various cell types, the algorithm can predict with high degree of confidence which mutation is present — confirming that differences in gene and cell activation are associated with pathogenic variants of specific genes.
Biomarkers for targeted therapies
The ultimate goal is to develop individualized therapies for heart disease the researchers said, because genotype-specific treatment could be more effective and with fewer side effects. The consortium has made all of its results available to the scientific community online. Seidman hopes that this resource propels studies by other groups to define new treatments that prevent heart failure, which today is an incurable disease.
“We investigated tissues of patients who needed a heart transplant; it was their last option,” Hendrik Milting says. “We hope that future pharmacological treatments will at least slow down the progression of the disease — and that the data from our study will help make this happen.”
Meanwhile, the research team has identified its next task. “The heart tissue that we studied came from people in the final stage of a disease,” Daniel Reichart, one of the first authors, says. “We are excited to see what changes we discover in earlier stages of disease, for example based on endomyocardial biopsies.” Perhaps biomarkers and pathways will be found that elucidate a very precise disease pathogenesis truly enabling personalized medicine, Gavin Oudit adds.

It found that 1- and 5-year cancer survival rates will be severely reduced because of the outbreak of COVID-19, owing to the reduction in diagnostic biopsies and lack of availability of screening services. 
However, numerous physician reports from the US have observed a growing number of screening appointments during the last quarter of 2020, which is expected to rise continually.

SpaceX CRS-24 launching multiple life science investigations to the The microgravity environment on the International Space Station (ISS) has a profound impact on cells and tissues, allowing researchers to conduct life sciences research in ways not possible on the ground. SpaceX’s 24th Commercial Resupply Services (CRS) mission to the orbiting laboratory will deliver a variety of life science payloads sponsored by the ISS National Laboratory. From stem cell research on neurodegenerative diseases to a tissue chip experiment studying the blood-brain barrier and an investigation testing the use of bacteria to protect DNA from the stresses of spaceflight—the research launching on this mission is helping to improve the quality of life for people on Earth. Microgravity affects organisms—from bacteria to humans—inducing changes such as altered gene expression and DNA regulation, changes in cellular function and physiology, and 3D aggregation of cells. Research leveraging these effects can drive advances in pharmaceutical development, disease modeling, regenerative medicine, and many other areas within the life sciences. Below are highlights of several life sciences investigations sponsored by the ISS National Laboratory that are launching on SpaceX CRS-24. The National Stem Cell Foundation is collaborating with the Exomedicine Institute on a unique 3D study of neurodegeneration in the absence of gravity using cells from patients with primary progressive multiple sclerosis (PPMS) and Parkinson’s disease (PD). This marks the first time that disease-specific cells from patients with PPMS and PD will be studied on the ISS to observe the cell-to-cell interactions of neurodegeneration and neuroinflammation when the gravitational forces affecting cells on Earth are removed. Results from this investigation, which is supported by ISS National Lab Commercial Service Provider Space Tango, could further enhance knowledge regarding the genetic makeup of these debilitating diseases. Boston-based pharmaceutical company Emulate is launching an investigation using proprietary tissue chip technology to examine the effects of microgravity on the blood-brain barrier. This project, funded by the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (part of the National Institutes of Health), builds on an initial tissue chip investigation that Emulate launched in 2019. Tissue chips contain human cells grown on an artificial scaffold to model the structure and function of human tissue. For this study, Emulate will use its Brain-Chip, which consists of living neuronal and vascular endothelial cells in a micro-engineered environment. The blood-brain barrier is a semi-permeable barrier that allows selective passage of certain molecules and gases while preventing the passage of others. It is a critical component involved in maintaining homeostasis, and disruption of the barrier can lead to or cause neurological dysfunction or disease. Results from this investigation, which is also supported by Space Tango, may provide insight into the relationship between inflammation and brain function, leading to a better understanding of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. DNA components are integral to synthetic biology and bioengineering of organisms for a variety of applications, such as producing pharmaceuticals, improving consumer products, and developing clean plastics. An investigation from ISS National Lab Commercial Service Provider Rhodium Scientific, in collaboration with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, will test the use of specific bacterial strains to protect and preserve DNA during the stresses of launch, in-orbit stowage, and return to Earth. Results could help to create more rugged biological components and advance these technologies for use in space and in extreme environments on Earth. These are only a few of the ISS National Lab-sponsored investigations launching on SpaceX CRS-24. This mission, contracted by NASA, is slated to launch no earlier than December 21 at 5:06 a.m. EST from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center.
