Storyteller vs. Fandom

so my favourite musician is Covey, partly because of his music and partly because of the amazing story he made about his album Class of Cardinal Sin. Back in 2020/2021 we were a small but passionate fandom on a discord server who were getting shown the characters, animals and lore bit by but. There were about 30 students and 8 teachers, plus some others. It was a long time ago but I could still name everyone and tell you their backstory and birthday. Everyone found a character they really identified with. My friend Bella started cosplaying as Gretta Greene, I nicknamed my other friend Ray and I haven't called him anything else since. It was such a strong and incredible community- Covey's coming out with a Netflix show i think- which will probably destroy the intimacy of it all. By intimacy I mean the character Fence Ferguson. All we knew about Fence is that he was an athlete who got his legs broken and had a very strange surgery which eventually killed him (but not exactly it's a whole thing). Which compared to a lot of the other characters is not much to go on- so he wasn't a favourite by any means, but he was My favourite. When the student body president campaigns happened I ran his twitter account. Me and my friends turned Fence into a way bigger character than he ever was meant to be and he meant so much to our little group. That's awesome. And Covey was totally in on it: he had made models of all of the characters and created them all so carefully, so I think he really liked seeing them so appreciated. Covey definitely saved my life because I think if we can create meaning in a dog with a human head in the corner of an album cover, anything can have meaning even if it feels meaningless. I couldn't be more grateful for everything Covey gave us, he deserves the world.

listening to covey’s new abllbm, class of cardinal sins, and rating the songs as I go along to my personal liking:

1. Cut on the Crease: I love this songgg, it was the first one for the album to come out and I’ve loved it since then! 10/10

2. 1991: A hard hitter, that’s for sure. Like ConC (that’s a fun acronym) it’s been out for a little bit, but mannn it slaps. this whole bit?

bam, see what I’m saying when I say hard hitter? A solid 9/10 from me

3. Why am I Alive?: It was pretty good, I don’t feel like it was as unique as the prior two. Look, I love anything Covey puts out so it’s not bad, but it just doesn’t reanimate with me rn, could change as I listen to it more through! but for now? I don’t know maybe a 5.5/10

4. Four Dollar Sandwich: haven’t even listened to the song yet but I love the name, I also like that it’s the fourth one I’m listening to. (I’ve listening to it now) well damn,,, I think I just got called out by a song called four dollar sandwich. solid 8/10 cause I like the lyrics, still not as hard of a hitter through, these have been more tame and more of covey’s “normal” style I’d say. Also I forgot to say this has a lot of reference to the lore!

5. Sam Jam: Sam Jam is a very tangy, venty song that I, as someone who doesn’t have an older sibling that can be put into the place of covey, or any younger siblings where I myself can be in his place, can’t relate to much until the chorus comes around,,, I mean come on, I think we all have someone we want to scream “FUCK THAT GUY I HOPE HES DEAAAD” to! a very fun song in that light. I’d say 7/10

6. Point Mutation: This one came out maybe two days ago now but I’ve really just been waiting for the rest of the album to come out to really listen to it. It’s pretty good, more like 1991 and CotC than Why am I Alive or Four Dollar Sandwhich which I do like more, but it’s a little repetitive for me, I think the chorus is done one or two more times that perhaps normal, but still alright. I’d say 6/10

7. Crooked Spine: I wasn’t expecting to like this, i’ll admit, but I do! I do, I do, I do! It’s funky, it’s fresh, I like the intro a lot and I like the characters introduces! Solid 7/10

8. Local Anesthetic: ooooh! It’s fun, it’s funky, it’s fresh! It gives me emo glass animals vibes if that makes sense, like I feel like if you put it to a more pop-like beat and a little higher, you might just get something like a glass animals song. I really enjoyed this one, it starts off kinda like the rest but about a minuet in it does a turn around and made itself more unique and memorable. 9/10 from me

9. Sound of a Gun: another one I enjoyed! I really like the lyrics with this one, I think there is a lot of good visual imagery in this one which I always like. Good song! 9/10

10. Marzipan Pills: ouch! but you know, it was a good song to end it on. I definitely likes this, between the lyrics and the instrumental in the background. the guitar brings me back to CotC which was great and the lyrics are heavy hitters. I’d say a fair 8.5/10

this was a really great album that I’ve been following the making of since I saw the first tiktok that came out about it and I’m so happy it’s out now! I know I’m going to be listening to this a lot in the coming while and I’m sure the songs that I didn’t like as much will grow on me :]

I love the university that you’re making and wanted to let you know that someone on TikTok is doing something similar (not copying bc it’s not the same but a similar concept) they’re called “coveysux” and their class is called “the class of cardinal sin”. They make music that goes along with it- maybe you’d like it! (Im not saying you have to but maybe it’d be helpful to see someone else doing something similar)

That university idea has been around for a couple of years anyway - it featured in some Patreon stories set in Old Trollbridge, loosely based on Cambridge University here in the UK. I have no idea how Tiktok really works or what the point of it is to be honest (I found it clunky and hard to see content I was interested in), but hopefully if people like the university idea, they can find what you suggested on there! Thanks :)

HOLY SHIT I ACTUALLY DID IT. I actually published the fic for this album, omg omg omg this is so exciting. This fic probably won’t make sense if you haven’t watched the Intro to the Class of Cardinal Sin series by @/coveysux on TikTok, but seriously it takes probably like 5-10 minutes to watch all of it and it’s one of the best worldbuilding things I’ve seen on there in so long. Anyway, I hope everyone enjoys!! And yes more Animaniacs fic is coming, I just had to get this out of my system first.
