I spent the first day of my trip to Berlin trying to get to acquainted with the city, zigzagging across the not-so-invisible boundary that used to divide the German capital into two halves. But on the second day I want to go beyond the wall, beyond the former border, where the memory of the pain is not gone despite the scars being no longer visible to the naked eye.

When I get off at Ostbahnhof, I cannot miss the mishmash of old and new: the station of the east, with its red-brick facade and the wrought-iron vaults on one side, and the ultra-modern, bright coloured blocks of flats on the other. I walk along the Mühlenstrasse towards the starting point of the East Side Gallery, which is probably the biggest open-air art gallery.

The wall is still intact along the East Berlin strip of street where hundreds of artists have left their brush strokes at the beginning of the Nineties. The nearly one mile long section of concrete is a powerful celebration of freedom against hate and oppression.

The works of art are ironic and colourful, like Birgit Kinder’s iconic Trabant crashing through the wall. Russian artist Dimitrji Vrubel copied the famous photo depicting Leonid Brezhnev and Erich Honecker hugging and kissing to celebrate the DDR anniversary in 1979. Mein Gott, hilf mir, diese tödliche Liebe zu überleben, reads the tagline under the graffiti: My God, help me survive this deadly love. A deadly love that broke a country into two: this is how the liaison between the German Democratic Republic and the Soviet Union is often described.

A bunch of tourists are taking turns in posing for selfies next to the graffiti, maybe without seeing the awful sadness behind the bright colors on the wall. And it’s embarrassing how people fail to understand the true meaning of the picture.

I walk along the street until I reach another landmark of the east-west division: the Oberbaumbrücke, the red brick tower bridge. It’s imposing, with its lower bay supporting the street, and the upper one sustaining the railway lines. The red bridge is yet another symbol of a divided city, where one of the several checkpoints was set up during the Cold War.

From the Oberbaumbrücke I take a tram to Grünbergerstrasse. Months ago I read an article about some café that apparently hasn’t changed much since the era of the German Democratic Republic: a place where you can still bask in die Ostalgie, the communist regime nostalgia. But there’s no way of finding it: the article I had read was published about a year ago, so maybe the place has closed down.

I reach Boxhagener Platz, where the Flohmarkt, the flea market, takes place every Sunday. It’s the mirror image of many other street markets in other cities: its smells like dust and incense smoke. People walk lazily, like if they have no particular destination, rummaging through second-hand clothes and crochet handbags. Strolling along the side streets is much better, especially since it’s sunny and not that cold.

But there are more things I want to see, starting from the Karl-Marx-Allee, just round the corner. The monumental avenue runs through Friedrichshain and Mitte. There’s nothing particularly remarkable, but what makes me want to see the 300-foot-large, multiple lane street are the buildings and the so-called brutalist architecture of the Soviet Union.

I have never been to Russia, but the avenue matches the image of the USSR that I have made up in my mind: the two twin square towers, the imposing nine storey blocks of flats overlooking the avenue that until 1961 was know as Stalin-Allee.

I leave Stalin behind and walk to the Fernsehturm in Alexanderplatz. I remember seeing photos dating back to the Cold War, and in particular a black and white image of a man and a kid – possibly a grandfather with his grandchild – walking in the fog, with the Television Tower and the World Clock in the background.

The only other person was a man looking like a soldier, or at least dressed like one. The contraposition with this Sunday afternoon is so painful that it feels like a completely different place. The Nike’s, McDonald’s and Dunkin Donut’s neon signs are an eyesore.

It might be a different place, after all. I choose not to climb to the top of the tower because the line for the elevator goes round the block, so I walk to the Rotes Rathaus, the red city hall, which was the seat of East Berlin city council.

I cross the road from the city hall and find myself in Nikolaiviertel, the borough named after St. Nicholas’ church. Should I come back to Berlin, I could easily do without seeing this area again: the seemingly ancient feel of the houses and the streets is nothing but a swindle, since the entire district was built in the Eighties in mock 18th century style.

Other than the Nikolaikirche, everything else screams a tourist trap – from the souvenir shops to the breweries whose waitresses are dressed up as Bavarian kellnerin. The set up is as unconvincing as a version of the Oktoberfest taking place on the French Riviera. Or like a Christmas parade on Bondi Beach.

My last stop of the day is the DDR Museum, just opposite the Berlin Dome. I am not sure whether the choice between the Dome and the museum is the right one, because I doubt that visitors really get the message the exhibition intends to convey.

For sure the Italian family made up of mommy, daddy and three screaming kids do not even figure out that there’s a message at all: because of them there’s a mile long line of people waiting to get on a restored Trabant. They seem to be under the impression that this is the Ferrari Museum or the Micro Machines theme park: the kids are on a roll, and so are the parents who keep suggesting that they should go faster.

I will never know what a Trabant smells like or how uncomfortable its seats are, but at least I know what the people’s apartments look like. I walk through a static elevator coming from one of the actual council flats of East Berlin. I get a glimpse of what life was like back in the DDR times, when people were told what to wear, what to eat and what to do with their time. From the furniture, to the choice of kitchen appliances to the – scarce – food: everything was imposed by the regime.

This was how people in East Berlin were compelled to live until about fifty years ago, not centuries ago. They didn’t choose that kind of life, nor did they choose to wear the clothes hanging from their bedroom closet or to embellish their dining room with the yellowish blanket strewn across the sofa armrest. Choices were made and imposed on them. The message is loud and clear: life in the DDR was a synonym of hardship, near-starvation, repression and fear. Something that no human being should ever be forced to experience.

Le match qu'il ne fallait pas rater

Encore et toujours Dijon à l’honneur. Encore et toujours une frappe pleine lucarne de Malcom, mais toujours plus lointaine. Encore et toujours un dénouement plein de suspense. Il y avait (encore et toujours) un match à ne pas manquer ce week-end! Petit florilège pour faire parler l’imaginaire avant un résumé vidéo:

Le jaillissement de Romain Amalfitano depuis le fond du but dijonnais pour repousser sur sa ligne la frappe d’Alexandre Mendy. Pour rien, puisque Cafu marque dans la foulée.

Les observations en vrac

Il a neigé sur la Côte d'Azur. Nolan Roux a marqué à Nice.

Depuis le départ de Marcelo Bielsa, la poisse semble avoir quitté le LOSC, par contre, quelqu'un connaît sa localisation? On dirait qu'il s'est installé dans le sud-ouest depuis...

La défense parisienne sur coup franc: on leur a dit qu'une fois le ballon parti, ça ne sert à rien de rester aligné haut mais qu'il faut suivre les joueurs adverses?

Metz est maintenant accompagné dans la zone rouge par les deux équipes n'ayant pas réussi à les battre.

Le pourcentage de chances que Toulouse transforme un penalty contre Mike Maignan était logiquement très bas. Très très bas.

On savait que Benoît Assou-Ekotto défendait en marchant depuis un moment, mais là il faudrait songer à lui apporter un cocktail, il risque peu de le renverser.

Au moins les kops stéphanois auront échappé à la vision de leur équipe ne jouant même pas en vert à domicile.

On découvre tous depuis lundi que ce collègue alsacien s'intéresse au foot.

Guy Roux interdisait les célébrations de but à base de sauts périlleux de crainte que ses joueurs ne se blessent. Der Zakarian va les interdire de crainte du ridicule.

Les stats

Joli but de François-Charles Metz qui lui permet de revenir dans le top dix des buteurs à hauteur de Karl Toko Ekambi avec six réalisations.

Caen a trouvé les montants adverses cinq fois au cours des trois derniers matches, série en cours.

La onzième journée de championnat a vu plusieurs belles promesses s’ébrouer sur nos stades (suite des Gazettes 7 et 10):

- Garande a fait un beau cadeau à Yoel Armougom, latéral gauche né en 1998: entré en jeu quatre minutes contre Troyes, il en jouera vingt de plus contre Strasbourg.

- Annoncé depuis longtemps par certains suiveurs marseillais, Boubacar Kamara n’avait encore jamais joué un match de Ligue 1. C’est chose faite depuis la partie à Lille, où il remplaça Patrice Evra à onze minutes du terme.

- Tellement précoce qu’on l’avait un peu oublié, Vincent Thill, une entrée en jeu en septembre 2016 à seulement seize ans, a refait son apparition contre Lyon. Il reste cantonné au banc de touche pour l’instant, malgré ses onze sélections en équipe nationale luxembourgeoise.

Deux autres jeunes Messins ont débuté récemment:

- Nicolas Basin avait lui aussi joué un bout de match l’an passé lors de la... première journée, avant de disparaître. Il a joué quarante-cinq minutes contre Lille (défaite 3-0) puis était titulaire contre Marseille (défaite 3-0).

- Ibrahima Niane (1999) joue aussi à Metz, et compte déjà dix matches de Ligue 1 dont deux titularisations. Il est issu de Génération Foot, le centre de formation messin délocalisé au Sénégal (dont on se demande s’il ne forme pas plus de joueurs que le "vrai" centre de formation du FC Metz)

En vrac:

- Sacré baptême du feu pour Jessy Deminguet (1998), milieu caennais: Patrice Garande le propulse titulaire face à l’OM, au Vélodrome, pour une défaite 5-0. Personne ne l’a revu depuis. Merci de prévenir si vous avez des nouvelles, sa famille est inquiète.

- Jocelyn Gourvenec a lui profité de la dérouillée infligée aux Stéphanois pour faire entrer Ervin Taha (1999, attaquant) et Zaydou Youssouf (1999, milieu) en fin de match. Youssouf avait déjà joué deux matches l’an passé.

- Boubakary Soumaré (1999, milieu de terrain) a été recruté au PSG l’été dernier par le LOSC. Il est récemment entré en jeu contre Metz et Saint-Étienne.

- Nicolas Cozza (1999, défenseur de Montpellier) a fait son apparition contre Lyon et Lille. Lors de la signature de son contrat pro l’été dernier, il expliquait prendre la suite de son grand-père Jean-Louis Besson, capitaine de La Paillade dans les années 1970.

- Première en Ligue 1 également pour Amine Gouiri, star des Bleuets et très attendu par les supporters lyonnais. Douze minutes contre Nice, dix-huit contre Montpellier pour l’attaquant né en 2000.

Le championnat à l'envers

Deux anciens et un nouveau, c'est le podium du championnat à l'envers au lendemain de cette seizième journée. Examinons-le de plus près.

En commençant bien entendu par le leader des leaders, celui que personne, à l'époque contemporaine n'a jamais égalé, pas même le fabuleux Grenoble 2009/10: Metz. Metz immobile, qui avance à reculons mais à tombeau ouvert vers le titre de champion à l'envers 20107/18. L'enseignement de cette journée, c'est que les Lorrains sont d'ores et déjà assurés du titre de champion d'automne, leur avance sur leur dauphin leur permettant d'envisager sereinement les trois journées restantes avant la mi-championnat, même dans le cas (improbable) d'un effondrement complet de leur part.

En janvier dernier, on a fêté le dixième anniversaire de l'annonce par Carlo Molinari, emblématique président du FC Metz, du plan "Grenat 2010" qui visait, sous dix ans, à installer le club parmi les dix meilleurs du championnat. Alors, certes, le calendrier n'a pas été tout à fait respecté. Mais qui aurait pu imaginer en fin de saison dernière que le club était si proche de pouvoir remplir, et de quelle manière, les objectifs de ce fameux plan? En tout cas, au club, la volonté de faire de cette saison quelque chose d'exceptionnel est là. Frédéric Hantz le sait et c'est certainement pourquoi, après le match samedi soir, il a invité ses joueurs à "garder ce cap".

Derrière le leader, Angers poursuit sur la lancée de ses excellents résultats de novembre (un seul point concédé en quatre matches dont trois contre des adversaires directs) et consolide la place de dauphin conquise à l'issue de la dernière journée. Son premier poursuivant pointe désormais seul et à deux longueurs derrière, alors qu'ils étaient deux et à un point seulement avant cette journée. Mais pas d'enthousiasme prématuré: le championnat est encore long et les écarts avec les poursuivants ne sont pas faits.

Auteur au mois de novembre, du même genre de parcours qu'Angers, et poursuivant lui aussi sur sa lancée pour son premier match de décembre, Toulouse complète le podium sans qu'on l'ait vraiment vu venir. Et pourtant… En y regardant de plus près, on se dit que la présence du Téfécé en si bonne place ne doit rien au hasard vu les performances réalisées ces dernières semaines contre toutes les équipes en forme du championnat.

Qui, en dehors de son actuel dauphin, est le seul depuis le début de la saison à avoir poussé l'ogre messin à la faute? Qui, en trois journées, est parvenu à ne pas concéder le moindre point contre les grands noms qui ont animé ce début de championnat à l'envers (Dijon, Nice et Lille)? Il faut l'admettre: Toulouse mérite amplement sa place sur le podium. Du coup, on a donc Metz, qui n'a concédé que quatre points cette saison, immédiatement suivi des deux équipes contre qui ces points ont été concédés… Au final, il est quand même plutôt cohérent ce podium.
