Crossframe Girl Star GaoGaiGar and Goldymarg

Though I usually refer to them as GaoGaiGal and Galdymarg. I bought two copies of this kit; the first to straight build so I can understand its construction, and the second so I could use it for parts for a custom based on my Jupiter Theory, since they're much more slimmed down than stuff like the RG and SMP.

The Good: This set of kits sets out to do a lot, and is quite successful in a lot of it. Starting from the ground up, the base body for GaoGaiGal has many different configurations: standard, Galeon, GaiGar, and GaoGaiGar. They do require parts swaps, but they are effective.

Then Stealth Gao, Liner Gao, and Drill Gao are all Good recreations. And while Liner Gao has some parts forming due to what it needs to accomplish for this kit, Stealth Gao only sheds a few parts, and Drill Gao requires none of that.

This set is also able to accomplish all the minor forms, like Stealth Gao being able to carry Liner Gao, and GaiGal utilizing the alternate forms of Stealth Gao and Drill Gao.

Moving on to the GaoGaiGal configuration, she can do everything you'd expect the real one to do. Use the Dividing Driver, Hell and Heaven, you can use larger robot hands or can swap them for the normal white hands, there's an alternate configuration that gives her four arms. It's quite a lot, and we haven't even started talking about Galdymarg and the Stealth Gao II yet.

Speaking of, Galdymarg also has a few different outfit options: basic, schoolgirl, and schoolgirl with hammer backpack. I believe this is also the first time Crossframe Girl has done this smaller body type? I tried looking, but this was the only one I could find, which is kind of neat it first appeared as a crossover kit, if that's true.

Her larger accessories also have several different configurations, like reconverting parts of her outfit and hammer into a little tank scooter, or adding a few parts to Stealth Gao II to make a sky bike. She also has several hand modes.

Stealth Gao II also adds new functionality to GaoGaiGal in the Gattling Driver and Levitation Rings.

The Bad: While GaoGaiGal does a lot, she's not very stable. While all the vehicles, and even Galdymarg are quite solid in their construction, GaoGaiGal constantly fell apart on me. Head would fall off, hair would fall out, chest would pop off, arms would pop off, etc. And because most of these parts are meant to be swapped out, you can't glue them.

Also, and especially because of the arms falling off, it's very hard to effectively utilize the hammer. The RG has a small base to help hold it up, but this kit only has a little clip that you're supposed to attach to a stand, except it requires a long peg that's not standard for most stands.

The Details: Because of how many different conversions this kit has, I took photos as I went. Because of that, I really only panel lined. This kit comes with a small amount of stickers that I just didn't use because I forgot until half-way through.

Overall, this is a very interesting kit, even if it isn't the most solid. I can think of several reasons to buy it, but I can't really give it a heavy recommendation? I hope this gives you some idea of what you're getting into before you take the plunge, at least.

I painted the book the Dark Magician Girl crossframe figure I got for my birthday came with, and it's not perfect, but I am so proud. It's less than 3cm tall, I used nail art paint brushes I've had laying around, mixed the paint from Posca pens by eye, and detailed the metalics partially with being super careful with metallic pens and partially with getting the ink on a tiny brush - and there are mistakes. There are corrections in the paint where it doesn't match - my phone camera really picks them up, and the tiny.. feathers? (Wings?) at the top aren't neat - the paint is so delicate and in need of sealing (I'll seal it tomorrow)

But I am SO PROUD OF IT and I want to jump around squeaking about it, but it's almost 5am hahahaha, so here I am, posting about it.

I'm now in the homestretch. Sort of.

Obviously the main thing left to cover is King of Kings: GaoGaiGar Vs Betterman, which was originally published in prose across 3 volumes between 2016 and 2021. It's now also releasing as a manga intermittently, with the 5th Volume coming soon. At least some of the collected volumes have new chapters not included in the serialisation, I don't know yet if those are original, and won't until I look at the manga. I'll be covering the prose version first.

There's also the separate matter of a webcomic I didn't discover until I started this project, Brave Musume GaoGaiGirls. O originally assumed this would be a tie-in to the CrossFrame Girls figure, but apparently not. This launched in 2019, and when I learnt of it, hadn't been updated in over a year, so I planned to cover it before King of Kings, as it's officially set in the period after FINAL. However, after the King J-Der manga it's started receiving monthly updates again.

My current thinking is that I will probably cover GaoGaiGar Vs Betterman in prose form first, followed by looking at both manga and GaoGaiGirls intermixed based on release date.

  GaoGaiGar has been returning to the fan consciousness in recent months—which means it's time for new merchandise. In this case, a GaoGaiGirl.

Crossframe Girl GaoFighGar

Like the last kit, I bought two of these so I could repurpose the parts for a custom Exia. The limbs are a bit thicker, which I don't know if I'd rather use? But the backpack and shoulders have a better feel to them for a Gundam, so there are definitely parts I'm gonna use.

Also, go read Jupiter Theory. It has, like, 3 likes. Please.

The Good: Compared to GaoGaiGar, GaoFighGar is a big improvement. Generally more solid, more forms, safeguards so it doesn't fall apart as easily, etc. They definitely learned their lesson from the issues the last kit had. There's even a specific piece used specifically to help dismantle certain locked parts safely.

With the addition of PhantomGao, GaoFar has 4 vehicular companions, and is capable of combining with them in multiple ways reminiscent of the modes the robotic GaoFar is capable of. This includes the incredibly silly all-vehicle travel mode.

The combinations are all quite solid; especially GaoFighGar. It's also capable of multiple gimmicks, such as the drills being able to be shifted around, GaoFar's serving platter splitting into effect parts for Broken Magnum and Protect Shade, Hell and Heaven hands with easily shiftable parts to use them properly, and you're able to combine GaoFighGar with Goldymarg and the Goldion Hammer.

The Bad: While this release is mostly solid, and much more so than GaoGaiGar, I have had a few pieces pop off here and there, but they're usually pretty easy to fix.

The biggest issue I had (which I may have had on the other one) is the plastic quality isn't the best? When I was panel lining the arms, cracks started to appear, and a chunk even fell off of one of the elbows. Be very careful if you plan to paint this one.

The Details: Despite said fracturing, I did continue to panel line this kit, only having issues with the white plastic. StealthGao III also has a few color options of either black or translucent green, and I chose green. I also painted the back of the bigger hands green so you could better see the details on it.

Overall, while I mostly picked this one up to test spare parts for a future custom, it is a marked improvement over the first release. Honestly, if they do more, even if I don't plan on using them for customs, I'll probably pick them up. I'd be curious to see how much the next release improves over this one, or how they'd do characters like Chouryujin.
