In 1972, Al Alcorn got handed a "warm-up exercise" at his new job (Atari), and came up with Pong: two paddles, one ball, and soon after, lines of people around the block to play it, all over the world. 

Pong's still classic, and still awesome, and we wanted to give backers a chance to make it their own – plus it's Code Week! This is an early version of Make Pong, a Level in Kano OS, and a sneak peak at Kano Blocks. Backers, you know best – what do you think? 

You can use Make Pong to complete the Pong challenge on Codecademy, which has tons of amazing tutorials.

A response to the news that Codecademy, the Silicon Valley VC darling, has raised $10 million in their latest round. In the article, Audrey quotes Georgia Tech prof. Ian Bogost, who quipped

CodeNow, a bootstrapped nonprofit that teaches kids programming in the DC area, looks like the type of thing that I would love to get involved with in Seattle.

Computer Science Education Week

This week marks Computer Science Education week all over the world. Schools all over the world are participating in the Hour of Coding where students are learning to code in school. This event was recognized last year by one of our math teachers who was very knowledgeable in computer science education (CSEd). One of the major obstacles we as educators have with teaching  CSEd is the lack of knowledge and exposure to this field. Many educators have no idea was coding is or what it means. 

Here is the short definition: coding is the language that is used by computers to function and operate. This includes software, websites, or anything used on a computer. 

Let that sink in for a moment... Think about all the tools we use on a computer in a single day. So think about the jobs that are needed to write code for the computers to function. This is not a career that will go away anytime soon. So part of our job as educators is to expose our students to career paths for their future. But how can we make that happen when many of us don’t know the first thing about coding?

There are many websites and blogs dedicated to coding but I recommend looking at https://code.org/ first. There are many lessons and activities  for all subject areas to look at. Here some additional resources to look at too:

Vectorizing CSED

(PNG) Now with 88% more suffering at half the cost, cause bezier curves are kinda painful.

Now in some cases, one might prefer to use vector objects over pixel-y raster images. I personally prefer the amount of detail you can put into hard edged pixel graphics, but I've noticed it's not that good for common applications like animation and 2D game rendering. So I'm attempting to vectorize every gun currently in the CSED document just to offer more options and so I can actually animate a gun for the first time in what feels like years. Animate REALLY does not like low-resolution images.

I'm going to put together a zip archive of all the CSED files I have currently in raster form, then I'll post the vectors.

As with everything I will be talking about on this blog, CSED will be free to use and edit for any purpose, (but really, there are better options out there, why not use those...?)

Bringing Computer Science to Chicago Public Schools

As a recent Chicago Public Schools (CPS) graduate, I was thrilled to hear the news that as a result of a partnership between Code.org and CPS, a new K-12 Computer Science program is being brought to CPS elementary and high schools.

About the program:

The K-12 program will expand student access to computer science literacy over the next five years. The program will include:

In the next three years, every high school will offer a foundational “Exploring Computer Science” course.

In the next five years, at least half of all high schools will also offer an AP Computer Science course.

Chicago will also be the first US urban district to offer a K-8 computer science pathway, reaching one in four elementary schools in the next five years.

Within five years, CPS will allow computer science to count as a graduation requirement (e.g. possibly as a math, science, or foreign language credit). Only thirteen other states have elevated computer science to a core subject instead of an elective.

Code.org will be providing the curriculum and professional development for teachers who will teach the new classes, at no cost to taxpayers. This is especially notable because one argument against CS education is that it will cost too much versus traditional science/math education.

I've written about computer science education before (see here and here) and I am proud to say that my alma mater has been leading the charge to bring computer science to the rest of public schools in Chicago. A big reason I continue to study in the field and promote it is because of the inspiration that my teachers have given me. I hope to one day give back by becoming one part-time (or maybe even full-time) so that I can inspire younger versions of me to pursue their dreams.

Until then, I am working to keep other students interested in computer science and careers using it by coordinating my meetup group Weekend Hackers Chicago. So far, we've had one successful meeting and more should be coming soon. 20 people have signed up, and I hope to expand that number as more high schools and universities find out about what we're doing. At our next meeting we will be working on a website to popularize the group.
