CSSSA 2018 Animation Application Out of State (accepted!)
Hi everyone!! sO I applied for the animation program again, and I got accepted!!! I’m SO excited to attend this year oh my goshhh!!! Still haven’t quite gotten over it :,) I’m from out of state (New Zealand!!!) and because I looked for ages both times I applied to find out of state applicants who posted their applications, I thought I should post my own to help others! To state why I think mine got accepted this year and the other one didn’t in a few sentences: The fact all my pieces were traditional, the fact my animation was more experimental and the fact I focused on showing my style rather than how pretty I could make something look. Without further ado, here it is!
Assignment A - One drawing or painting that shows what you feel is unique about yourself.

Assignment B - One drawing or painting of any subject that interests you. You might consider an emotion, memory, song, place or thing. Upload an explanation of the work. Include the poem, or lyrics if appropriate.

Explanation: For this watercolor piece I was inspired by the characters from books that influenced my childhood, typically anthropomorphic animals with human-like societies. The part of this topic that interested me is the fact authors use animals to represent the ‘innocent’ parts of human society, the positive parts that are suitable for children to see. In this piece, I wanted to explore how the two worlds would meet - the harsh reality of the animal world (the dead deer) and the fabrication (the clothed animals).
Assignment C - One drawing or painting that you feel demonstrates your technical skills.

Assignment D - Short Animation

CSSSA 2018 Application
So, I applied to CSSSA again because I honestly just really loved it last year and I want to improve my art!
Assignment A

I made this piece to express self-love and acceptance. I always strive to be optimistic and accepting of the things that society expects me to feel ashamed of, such as body weight and appearance. I take my insecurities and glorify them because they are a part of who I am as a person. I feel that a unique thing about me is that I can learn to love my body regardless of what others think, and I like the fact that I can live with these “ugly” things and still be happy.
Assignment B

I absolutely love marine life. Everything about marine life fascinates me, from the coral communities to the depths of the ocean floor. The ocean inspires everything, from my creature designs to worldbuilding ideas. Recently, I volunteered at the Aquarium of the Pacific, and I have never felt so connected to the community before. Volunteering at the aquarium has been such an incredible experience that really took me back on a nostalgia trip because I’ve been there so many times as a kid. Being a part of the Aquarium has really revived my passion of knowledge for the animals of the ocean, and I created this piece as a representation of the community of people that all love the ocean!

First(Left): Application A
Second(Right): Application B
Third(Middle): Application C
Fourth(Bottom/Last): Application D
I’ve been really hesitant on posting my CSSSA animation application for a while now, but hey, I’m finally doing it. Given the fact that I basically did this all in the time frame of 2 weeks, I can’t really complain. I had a lot of things going on in January when I originally found out about the program and the first two weeks of February didn’t treat me any better. I’m still proud of my works, but I wish I did better on them. Oh well now. It’s a long shot, but it’d be a great experience to get into the CSSSA program!

OK SO I’M FINALLY DOING IT! Here is my accepted CSSSA portfolio from 2017! I know it’s super late, but I hope this will still help anyone applying this year or in the future!
This should go without saying, but PLEASE do not use my pieces for your application or claim them as your own, because that will not get you into CSSSA. Trust me, they will not let you in or they will kick you out if they find out that your pieces are not your own.
In order:
Prompt A: The prompt for A last year was to make an image that tells a story without the use of words. So, for this piece, I was working on a storyline that I have since stopped working on, but I made this image to sort of represent the climax of that story.
Prompt B: This prompt is the same this year, which is to make an image about something that interests you. For me, it was biology. Specifically zoology. Here, I created a character who is a zoologist and is working to discover and study unique creatures in the wilderness. For the written explanation of this piece, I discussed about how the incredible zoological findings and studies of creatures across the globe inspires my approach to character design and writing stories for those characters.
Prompt C: This is the technical skill prompt. Now, figure drawing is super important in animation, so I simply put four of my best figure drawings at the time into one image and submitted that.
The last prompt is the animation reel, but I will probably put that in a separate post that supports the video format :).
And I won’t post my written statements, because for the written statements it is really important that you write honestly about why animation is important to you, and about an event that you worked hard on, because the CSSSA admissions people really just want to know about you!
Best of luck to anyone applying, and if anyone has any further questions, please let me know and shoot a message my way!

heres my CSSSA animation application!! Odds are I wont get in, but I really had fun with it.
Heres assignment D:
https://youtu.be/uYrYbTE1Kvo
Explanation for A:
Something unique about me is actually a flaw. I tend to let judgement cloud my vision, but also am hyper aware of other people judging me.
Explanation for B:
This is about the concept of lucid dreaming. In lucid dreaming you control what identity you take and which environment you are in inside your dream. I always enjoy watching my identities with different environments as they change throughout the long, unpredictable dream. They tend to either have a spooky end or an end that is easy to forget.

CSSSA 2017 application!!
here’s my app for the animation program, good luck to all those who applied! :D
A.) One drawing or painting that suggests a story without speech bubbles.
done in photoshop

B.) One drawing or painting of any subject that interests me.
done in photoshop

The human brain and mind is something I find very fascinating. My illustration is about how the left side of our brains performs task that have to do with logic, like math and science, and how the right side of our brain performs tasks that have to do with the arts and creativity. Not only is this something I find interesting but something I relate to because my artistic life and academic life both make up who I am.
C.) One drawing or painting that I feel demonstrates my technical skills.
gestures and figures: traditional; portrait: digital

D.) Animation
