Today’s theme for “Color Me Valentine” is “Cutest Couple”! I decided to represent Donald and Daisy.

To be honest, representing two distinct characters in one outfit is complicated. So I decided to make a feminine version of Donald’s outfit, sorta like a Daisy version. 

The top is darker than Donald’s sailor top, but that’s mostly because sailor-inspired tops are rare, so I had to go the Japanese uniform way. Same for the ribbon around the neck. While neither ducks wear pants or skirts, I decided to include a white shirt to represent their white bottoms. The gold flats are for Donald’s and Daisy’s yellow duck feet, and the backpack has Daisy’s bow on it. The turquoise bracelet is because of the bracelet Daisy wears. The bow just perfectly rounds off the outfit.

For today’s Birthday Bound Bash challenge, the theme is Comics, which include mangas according to the organizer. Honestly, if Aya hadn’t mentioned mangas, I would probably have went for a western comic (always felt mangas were their own category). So, thanks to that inclusion, I created a Sailor Moon outfit.

Sailor Moon is the first anime and manga I watched and read, the anime in English, the manga in French. It was also what led me to be curious about Japan, and to eventually fall in love with the country, as I explained to my Japanese teachers during my summer at Harvard. This fascination with the land of the rising sun led to me applying to a double masters, where I would spend one year in Paris, followed by one year in Tokyo. Yup, despite the advice of many J-Vloggers to visit Japan as a tourist before spending a longer period of time, my year in Tokyo was my first time in Japan. And what a year it was! I lived closed to Azabu-Juban, an area heavily associated with Sailor Moon.

Fun fact: Naoko Takeuchi studied at the Kyoritsu University of Pharmacy, which is now the Keio University Faculty of Pharmacy and Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and I attended Keio University for my double masters. So it’s like I closed the circle by attending Keio, since it’s basically because of Takeuchi that I ended up wanting to experience life in Japan.
