Tips for my fellow curly people:
1. Do NOT brush your hair. Ever. Don't even own a brush.
2. Comb only when wet. Use a wide-tooth comb.
3. Always start detangling from the bottom and work your way up. Never pull on your hair. That way lies breakage and pain. Detangling is not supposed to hurt.
4. A tail comb is a great investment if your hair tangles easily. The pointy end can work loose the worst knots.
5. Do not try to detangle your hair while it's dry. Slather it in oil or conditioner first. The easiest time to detangle it is while conditioning your hair in the shower.
6. Oil or deep condition your hair (or both) at least once a week.
7. If you use oil, heat it a bit for best results and massage it deep into your roots.
8. Deep conditioner is not for the scalp but to repair damage to the hair cuticle, so start from halfway up your hair and rub down to the ends.
9. Don't wash it with shampoo more than once a week. Twice if you live somewhere hot and humid. Use a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo.
10. Co-wash. This means wash only with conditioner if you have to wash your hair more than once a week. There are enough cleaning agents in conditioner to clean most hair without anything harsher. You can forego shampoo altogether if you find a co-wash-only method that suits you.
11. Condition from the ends and work your way up. Don't rub it into the roots, otherwise you might end up with a build up of conditioner on your scalp. A generous dollop of conditioner can loosen the worst tangles pain-free.
12. Work an anti-frizz serum into your hair with your fingers. Add some hair wax for waves, or a dollop of mousse on the ends and scrunch them halfway up for a real curlpalooza.
13. Refrain from blow drying. The heat destroys the texture. Always try to air dry.
14. If you really have to blow dry, use the big round diffuser nozzle. Pointed it at the underside of your hair while scrunching your curls up from the bottom. Do not point it directly at your scalp.
15. Seriously, leave your roots alone as much as possible unless you're oiling.
16. Sleep on satin or silk pillows or with your hair tucked securely in a silk or satin cap.
17. Always know that curly hair - every single type of curl - is absolutely gorgeous.
