Hey beauts
So you’re probably wondering – how dare this girl roll up on here talking about a meet-up from about a month ago when she hasn’t even said anything all this while? I know darling – but I’m still collecting my thoughts (as well as working on my design project, being officially the last project in this undergrad ) from final year examinations just ended so I’m quite spent still! You know; before blog posts, ya girl had to go on a party festival this weekend because hashtag #Mood (Haha) but well thats a story for another day.
Research project and presentations done! Phew.
Nonetheless, I want to share about this AMAZING natural hair meet-up at the Hornung Park Golf Club. Keep reading for my rundown of the event, as well as for photos and some of the beautiful attendees! My InstaFam already know I spoke at this “Crowned by Nature” meetup.
The event was a mixture of presentations and giveaways, followed by a panel discussion!
I talked on “The Basics of Natural Hair” ; hair growth, hair texture & density. I also shared my personal natural hair story and my final year project on formulating an organic shampoo from banana peel ash derived shampoo.
What inspired the shift to natural hair and what are our hair goals?
The large majority of attendees were fairly new naturals, having big chopped a year ago or more recently. There were a few lifetime naturals in the mix as well as a women who went from locs to being loose naturals. There was a great deal of variety of hair textures and types; although a few women were sporting protective styles in the form of braids or weaves, people’s hair descriptions varied from kinky to curly, fine to coarse, and thin to dense.
Several attendees described the decision to embrace their natural hair being driven by damaged hair, a greater concern on health, or being inspired by a friend. Contrary to length goals more common among social media, the overwhelming desire amongst these naturals was a “big ass fro” a la Erykah Badu. (some people’s dreams were shattered once I told them it was too much work some days!)
ABOUT SELF LOVE & NATURAL HAIR
Dr Guramatunhu gave such a phenomenal talk on embracing natural hair and loving the skin you’re in! He talked about health of our bodies when we keep in weaves and suffocate our scalps for months on end and the beauty in our natural being, be it, you prefer being bald like the majestic Lupita N’yongo or you wear your TWA or you wear your bad ass fro! He also gave an insight into the manufacturing of these 100% Indian hair, Peruvian hair, Brazilian hair etc weaves , being well traveled. I’m not going to reign on your parade but this was such an interesting revelation.
PANEL DISCUSSION
I sat on a panel with all the presenters plus Shami who runs natural hair podcasts on Miso Naturelles and we were barraged with a ton of questions! Some people asked me to tell them more about my project. Other questions really dug deep into the concerns of natural hair, especially kinky textured hair, and being “neat”. I’ll leave that for another post because it’s too much to flesh out here!
Natural hair in the workplace, home, and in relationships
The panel discussion topic that we spent some time discussing was the reception of natural hair in different sectors of life. One surprising discovery was a women who was told by her boss that her locs were inappropriate for work. This already gives you a sense of the negative perception of kinky textured hair in workplaces. While natural hair is becoming increasingly accepted, there seemed to be much room for improvement in terms of workplace discussions about hair. Some women told stories of being singled out publicly or privately for their hair choices, and others were asked to straighten their hair before important client meetings. We also talked about advertisements by Head and Shoulders on their new natural hair line, and most of the ladies felt it was a ploy for their money and they would go with pro-black owned brands especially supporting local Zimbabwean brands. However, when it came to relationships, most attendees cited neutral or positive reactions to their natural hair transition by their significant others and other interested parties, and we concluded that men are largely oblivious to our hair crises and debates, and we as women put way more pressure on each other to maintain a certain standard of beauty than our parents, our jobs, or our male counterparts do.
Check out some more pictures of the event!
The ATTENDEES!
So many beautiful heads of hair! From fros to braids, locs to crochet braids, and colored hair to TWAs, almost every natural hairstyle was represented in this meetup!
In addition to nibbling on tea and small bites – like some totally nom chicken and mushroom pies – each woman was able to leave with a few products sponsored by Mzanzi Fro & Aunt Jackie’s Zimbabwe.
I bagged a Black Pearl leave in conditioner and some Nubian Nature goodies pictured below, which I’m hoping to review soon.
Thank you so much Kay for having me at the Crowned by Nature Natural Hair Meetup and for the freebies! I truly enjoyed meeting a few of my readers, dropping the small nuggets of information that I possess, and learning more from everyone in attendance. Can’t wait to do this again!
If you were at the Crowned by Nature Natural Hair Meetup, drop me a comment below! If not, tell me your favorite part of the event based on my recap!
