Minggu lalu nobar beberapa karya Terry Gilliam @terryvgilliam , salah satu maestro yang kerap menggunakan teknik animasi cut out, collage dari gambar yang digerakkan secara stop motion. Nah, maestro satu itu dikenal absurd secara karya dan besar bersama film2 Monty Phython yang super maksimal ngebanyolnya. Penasaran? Bouncing ball animation - preparation

Preparation to  make this animation was quite easy. I just cut out 4 different balls from the white paper.

I also downloaded the graphic showing the arc of the ball. It helped me while animating.

A little shot of our animation for 2voor12. I made this together with an illustration student and photography student. Had the most of fun with it. Animated portrait

To be honest I thought that making animated portrait of myself will bring me difficulties. Mainly because I don’t really know how to present myself. At the beginning many questions appeared. Who I am? What do I look like? What do i show with my behavior? What makes me the person I am? And finally, how am supposed to show everything in 10 seconds of animation?

I started from the design of character - me. To do this, I took sketchbook to the bathroom and made some sketches. Later, I drew clean lineart using black marker. The result wasn’t bad. Actually, I was quite satisfied with the final drawing. But I had a feeling, that it’s not a good design. One of the principles of animation says “exaggerate” so I decided to comply and I redesigned the character.

And the final version of first stage. To ordinary and too difficult to animate in my opinion.

I’m still really proud of this one. Made this cut out animation like 1,5 year ago. The stair cycle isn’t smooth at all. But still it looks kinda smooth?
