You should never chose to exile a book because you think it will clash with your beliefs. Isn't that the point of reading anyway? To read something that contradicts and therefore, inspires passion? Comeon people!

So this thread got started a few days ago about the main character Dagny Taggert, who is resilient and well-developed. We all look up to her for her business aplume.

So the thread then evolved into her famous quotes from the book, and then into inspirational quotes in general and then, an unknowingly wonderful thing happened, the thread turned into the four of us just posting pictures of powerful women throughout history.

Who is John Galt? The rally cry of the entrepreneur, inventor, and self-made man. It seems that many people want to consider Atlas Shrugged a work to be envisioned in its own time, but I don't think it was intended to be that way.

Like 1984, Atlas Shrugged is a futuristic vision of the world. Unlike 1984, the totalitarian government is much more subtle. Society is brought down in a series of pokes, prods, rampant nepotism.

The title was once Strike, but it gave too much away.

If we put aside politics for a moment and focus on philosophy, you can start to see what an objectivist stands for. Reason, rights to freedom of action, speech, and association, self-responsibility. The down side: survival of the fittest, perhaps?

Some call it "rational selfishness", which gives it a negative connotation.

Anyway, Atlas Shrugged is great. I love it. If you don't agree with the philosophy, don't think too hard about it, and you can enjoy the story for what it is. Dagny Taggert struggles with a sense of duty to maintain her family's business, the most efficient, richest railway in the United States, maybe the world. However, her brother sits on the company's throne, leeching off her ingenuity and know-how to keep himself happy and ignorant.

Hank Rearden, a steel magnate, invents a new kind of alloy called Rearden Metal. Trusting his invention, Dagny places orders for the new metal that will make her Rearden's biggest client and, ultimately, save the railway. Slowly but surely, the government takes control of all commerce, destroying man's ability to succeed "too much".

Creative minds begin disappearing. The world becomes a dark place. You'll have to read it or look it up on Wikipedia (but where's the fun in that?) to find out why.

I will concede that this book is not for everyone. Some will find it too appropriate, others will disagree with her to the point of ripping out pages. It's not really a beach read.

One segment of the book was a near Sisyphean task, a 70 page speech that laid out the philosophy just to be sure the reader had been paying attention.

If you undertake this novel, prepare yourself. It is a monster, but one worthy of conquering.
