One of the more common criticisms I see of the modern Barbie brand - or at least, I should say, one of the more common criticisms of the modern Barbie brand that I feel remotely qualified to comment on - is the fact that back in the earlier days of Barbie, she had a variety of family and friends with distinct names and styles and now they're all just "Barbie".
Tumblr media
This is mostly true, and by design. To my knowledge, the reason so many more - and so many diverse - dolls are marketed simply as "Barbie" is because Mattel wanted Barbie to be equally available to and representative of a wider variety of little girls. (Or, cynically, wanted to be able to market more heavily and earn money from girls outside the blonde, white and able-bodied demographic.) These little girls can now see themselves as Barbie, and not just as the main character's friend.
However, it is not quite as true as some people make it out to be. It is definitely true that in the past Barbie had a wide variety of friends and family to share her brand with - off the top of my head, and by absolutely no means a comprehensive list, Midge, Teresa, Christie, Kira. Ask me sometime how many characters in the Barbie line I can name without Googling it and watch my head explode.
Tumblr media
And these days you don't see as many of them. Christie, for example, has only made one appearance in the playline since 2009, and one appearance as a collectors edition. Teresa has been seen once in the playline and once as a collectors edition since 2007.
However there are still other dolls in the line besides Barbie - not as frequently released as they used to be, but still around. For example, Daisy made her debut in 2017 and has appeared annually since. Gone are the days where friends of Barbie would see multiple releases per year - but she's around and about.
Tumblr media
(Side note, I really don't like Daisy's shorts in this release. I'm no fashion designer but they just don't look right.)

Barbie’s newer friend Daisy Kostopoulos is definitely my favorite. Her pink hair is 😍😍😍 so when I saw a Daisy Dreamtopia mermaid doll at target the other day I knew I needed to draw her.

Hi Barbie! I had to make an outfit inspiration board for one of my favorite Barbies. I love Barbie’s friend Daisy and this doll is way too cute.
