Hey! Im the girl who had a challenge of watching 180 movies directed by women this year. From your list I just saw Mosquita and Mari by Aurora Guerrero and Im so happy!! As a bisexual latina immigrant it was so cool to see a movie that just captured growing up like that, so I wanted to thank you a lot for the rec!! I'll keep you informed when I see some more :-)

I’m so glad you liked it! I am a huge fan of Aurora Guerrero and it breaks my heart that she’s been trying to get a second feature produced for years and still hasn’t been able to. Director/producer extraordinaire Ava DuVernay hired her to direct for her TV show Queen Sugar and since then she’s been able to do some TV work but I still think it’s appalling that her second movie still hasn’t happened.

It’s pretty revolting how few high profile Latina directors there are and how casual anti-Latino racism is among white directors who consider themselves “liberal”. 

I’m not sure where you’re from but here are some that you might be interested in (I’m not including Brazil since I know a lot of Brazilians don’t consider themselves Latinos, but there are a lot of great Brazilian women and you can check my Brazil tag if you’re interested in them). On and bonus! The Allison Anders’ film Mi Vida Loca focus on Chicanos in L.A. and it’s pretty good even though Anders is not Latina herself. That movie is so due for a rediscovery now that ‘90s fashion is back in style.
