Brazil's unsung 'capital of happiness'
Considered the birthplace of modern Brazil, Salvador's tumultuous history has produced a unique "axé" (or energy) and approach to life.
Tumblr media
The rich aroma of acarajé fritters sold by Baiana vendors mixed with the rhythmic drumming of Salvador's street bands. Tourists and locals flooded the bars of the Pelourinho neighbourhood to watch Brazil's first game in the 2022 World Cup, and crowds erupted as they scored against Serbia. This joyous celebration, set against the blue skies and pastel-coloured colonial-era buildings of the Terreiro de Jesus square, is typical of the capital of the Brazilian state of Bahia, Salvador de Bahia (better known as Salvador).
I quickly learned that celebration is the norm rather than the exception in Salvador, a city located along Brazil's north-eastern coast near some of the country's best beaches, which is considered by many to be the birthplace of modern Brazil. Locals have a saying, "Sem pressa, olha para o céu, fala com Deus, você tá na Bahia" (Take your time, look at the sky, talk to God, you're in Bahia), which, as Salvador-born Alicé Nascimento points out, embodies the relaxed and feel-good atmosphere unique to this region. It is no wonder then that this Unesco World Heritage city is unofficially known as Brazil's "capital of happiness".
When you ask locals (known as Soteropolitanos) what makes Salvador so jubilant, they all seem to mention the same thing: axé, a Yoruba West African term that loosely translates to "energy". Jair Dantas Dos Santos, a Salvador local, describes Salvador's axé as a "powerful presence in the air, which is something to be felt rather than explained". Indeed, Soteropolitanos say axé is an energy woven into the fabric of Bahian culture, and it imbues everything from Salvador's music to its laid-back attitude towards life.
It is impossible to describe Bahian axé without first considering the region's layered and tumultuous history. Salvador was settled in 1549 by Portuguese colonialists and served as Portuguese America's first capital until 1763. It was a major seaport during the transatlantic slave trade and is considered the New World's first slave market, with enslaved Africans brought to work on the region's sugar plantations.

Vila Galé Coruripe é o segundo resort do grupo em Alagoas
Tumblr media
Read the full article

Westsail notes from Mike
Westsail notes from mike
They are. The first building is the Placentia Ave location, the second is the old Columbia facility on Mc Cormick Place, and the third is the east coat, Wrightsville Beach, NC location. The rest jump around, most are Placentia, but there are some from the original Kendall Yachts company—you can tell by the flush deck, what Wm. Atkins called his “Thistle”, the balance are the Bill Crealock “Eric” deck. There are also some pics of a company called Crystaliner. This is where the Sam Morse Bristol Channel Cutter ended up being built. Sam started at the Dreadnaught yard up in Danta Barbara, but moved to Newport after the 2nd or 3rd Boat. Most of those photos were taken by S. Snyder Vick. I remember a lot of them being taken. I also recognize a familiar face or two. Even though the boat was outdated, there is something ‘Salty’ and romantic about the Colin Archer design.
This was, I think, the plug for the Crealock ‘Eric’ deck. I just finished all the little videos. I don’t know if the movie was ever completed. The other, with Bud Taplin was interesting, if not wholly accurate. Taplin is/was a complete ‘hand job’. He cried when we fired him. He was given dozens of ‘warnings’, but he refused to comply. Now he’s dressed himself up and poses as ‘Mr. Westsail’. Taplin couldn’t grasp the idea of production boats, and wanted to build each one as a custom. They claim over 1100 built, but I think that’s a little bit higher than the truth. I called Taplin a few years ago, and he pretended he didn’t know who I was. Even though he was banging his ugly wife, Paula, in the next berth on a trip down to Mexico, while I faked being asleep. It was pretty disgusting. I seemed to have faded out of the scenery after I left with most of the money. There is a picture or two of a much thinner me in the brochure with the green cover. I’m fine with being in the background. I’ll let someone else make the comments. Taplin knows all of what I said above. The ‘wood’ deck is a flush deck Kendall. There was no mold for that. There are about 5 flush deck Kendall/Westsail out there. People started calling their Kendall’s Westsail because the resale was better.
Google Mike Bradshaw Westsail, I think I should turn up there. I had to step in as National Sales Manager after a Jerry quit suddenly.
I think that particular flush deck was a boat named ‘Senta To’, that was built for Gene and Carol Soma in the SF Bay Area.
Somethings you just remember. I think I told you the story where Snyder and I went to SF on our last dime, and I got the buyers to pay more money than they owed ? And we had to wait until the next day to cash their check so we could fly home ? That was Gene and Carol, so that’s why I remember.
S. Snyder Vick was my ‘partner’ in Electro Controls. E.C. Bought Kendall at an I.R.S. Auction, but Snyder ended up with controlling interest because his wife’s company, Impact Advertising also bought a piece of it. We also had some investment from Tom Byers and Ron Kinsling. Ron went on to help me fund the startup of Flicka. Snyder was an heir to the Vick Chemical Company, (Vaporub), and Rexall Drug fortunes. But he refused any financial help from his family, although we later used some of his dads stocks, along with my house, as collateral for a bank loan. Lynn and Snyder were the big “front” people for Westsail.
Snyder and Lynn now live up in Washington near the Canadian border, and have a W42.
Kendall and his gigantic, fat wife, were semi-Hippies who lived in a Westfailia van. They had 4 or 5 friends who all wanted to go cruising in a Colin Archer. They all chipped in to build the first hull mold. They then all took their hulls to various vacant lots around Costa Mesa/Newport to build out their flush deck Kendall’s. Larry Kendall decided to start a company and build completed boats, which was a disaster because the VW van was also their office and house. And they were building in someone’s backyard. They built maybe 7/8 boats, and as many hills before the IRS seized them for not forwarding the employees withholding monies. The IRS has no sense of humor when it comes to that. We bought the assets at the auction, which included 3 boats in various stages of completion, along with all the patterns, tooling and the hull mold, which was in really bad shape because it had been sitting outside for a while. We soon built a new, better one, an moved it to Christaliner’s facility. The cost from IRS was $1,800 in 1970 dollars.
Linda was Kendall’s wife’s name. She was a really loathsome human being.
We made a hull, and used it as a plug. We added things like a flange to mount the deck to, we continued to use a split mold, but made changes to make it easier to form a proper seam.
I googled mb and found westsail.org. Just you name, but did see Chris Charly posted on the westsail face book
"Hans Weerman - replaced Bud Taplin as production manager."
Which I know you said you had to work hard to make happen....
Sorry
Chris Carley - 1972-~1978 Carpenter, rigger, foreman of 42/43 Westsail line, delivery/trouble shooter ex-owner of W43 Music (former Teresa J, ex Kalokagathia)...For the couple of years that I ran the 42/43 line we built boats for the manager of ZZ Top, Walter Cronkite, and one of the Kennedy clan.
The Kennedy guy was Perry Auchincloss, I don’t know how to spell it, he was Jackie Kennedy’s half brother.
Hans was a Dutchman that had worked for many years with Columbia Yachts. Very capable. He later through some of his family, bought the dying Westsail with the intention of reviving it and moving some production to the Netherlands. It was too late, and lacked the motivational zeal of two kids trying to stay alive. Taplin is a Putz.
We had 250 employees. 300 if you count the east coast. It was hard
The 32 has 1,300 man hours to build. One of our points of contention was that I felt the real hours should be 1/2 to 1/3 of that. My wife feels I’m not spending enough time with her tonight, so I’ll catch up to you tomorrow

ABOUT COSTA RICA
Bathed by two oceans and bordered by Nicaragua and Panama, Costa Rica is 19,700 square miles of forests, volcanoes, mangroves, mountain ranges and beaches.   Costa Rica protects nearly 26% of its territory with national parks and private preserves, and holds around 6% of the world's bio-diversity, spread in twelve tropical habitats that range from the tropical dry forests in the north, to the densely wet rain-forest in the south. However, there are few corridors of protected areas to link together the national parks and reserves.  Another ecological problem is that there are logging and poaching endeavors which seek out farmers and landowners boardering national parks who will take bribes for access into the national parks. Interesting Stats:       878 Bird species 228 mammal species 218 reptile species 175 amphibian species 360,000 insect species 10,000 plant species estimated 505,000 species, only 85,000 have been described
Why Costa Rica?
Not only does Costa Rica hold an amazing amount of diversity (6% of the world) and some of the most fragile ecosystems, it has a government that endorses preservation efforts and has a friendly attitude towards international environmental and educational non-profit organizations. However, there are few biological corridors of protected areas to link together the national parks and reserves, thus species are isolated in islands of forest between cattle farm, farmlands, urban centers, etc.   Another reality is that there are organized logging and poaching groups that seek out landowners bordering national parks and offer them bribes for access into the national parks.  Furthermore, many small landowners (agriculturalists, ranchers, etc.) are struggling economically and are being forced to sell their lands and migrate to the cities or the United States.  Their lands then become part of an oil palm plantation, a large commercial cattle ranch, a resort/hotel, etc.   In conclusion, although Costa Rica is on the forefront of conservation efforts relative to its neighbors, there is still much work to be done.   IMPORTANCE OF AREA - Why Perez Zeledón Region? The Division/Savegre River Valley, within the Perez Zeledón region, in the Southern Pacific Lowlands of Costa Rica, is important for the following reasons: 1. Within the Mesoamerican Biological Hotspot, one of twenty five areas of the world being recognized by Conservation International and other organizations as holding most of the Earth's biodiversity.   Mesoamerica contains some of the highest biodiversity levels in the world, containing about 8% of the world's known species in only 0.51% of the Earth's surface.  Furthermore, there are currently at least 42 mammals, 31 birds, and 1,541 plants in this area that are endangered.   The region is also a critical migration corridor for many bird species and the wintering grounds of the monarch butterfly. For more information, please visit:  www.undp.org.ni/cbm and www.biodiversityhotspots.org/xp/Hotspots/mesoamerica 2. Within the Corredor Biológico Paso de la Danta, an area identified by ASANA, the Nature Conservancy and others as critical for endangered species habitat, such as tapirs.  These groups envision a communication route for the flora and fauna of the forests of the Corcovado National Park and the Los Santos Forest Reserve.  This area harbors 13 endemic species of fresh water fish, 64 species of reptiles and amphibians, 191 species of birds, 5 types of wild cats (inc. jaguars), and 58 species of bats. For more information on this, read The Path of the Tapir by Quint Newcomer, Yale University School of Forestry and Environmental Studies at: www.umich.edu/~esupdate/julaug2002/newcomer.htm Also, please visit ASANA's website at: www.pasodeladanta.org 3. Within the Rio Savegre Watershed.  Division River starts high up on the Cerro De La Muerte mountain peak in a town called División, nearly 10,000 feet above sea level. The river works its way down through the southern edge of the biological reserve Cerro Vueltas and Los Santos Forest Reserve, past the rural towns of Los Angeles, Savegre Abajo, El Llano, and El Brujo, and connecting with the Savegre River, which pours out to the Pacific Ocean, near the coastal town of Savegre. This area provides an important watershed to wildlife, including many endangered and threatened species.  With only 1.15% of the national territory, the Savegre watershed contains approximately 20 % of all the registered species of Costa Rica.  Many groups have conducted studies in the area, including ARAUCARIA, INBio and MINAE.  A new sustainable development zoning plan is going to be presented to government officials and local agents by 2005.   Read an article about this important watershed that is also a biological corridor at: www.ots.ac.cr 4. On the southern border of Los Santos Forest Reserve.  Created in November of 1975, the reserve totals 153,000 acres of pre-montante and montane rainforest. Premontane forests are the second most endangered life zones in Costa Rica, after tropical dry forests.  With CRCT's efforts, these ecosystems can be expanded past the reserve borders. 5. Refuge for threatened and endangered species: The area is home to several endangered and near threatened species including jaguars, the resplendent quetzal, black guan, Baird's tapir, and the squirrel monkey.
