Dans le bureau d'Ayden Forbes, ancien Directeur de Weird Life Magazine, devenu éditeur, Law signe des documents pour la publication du premier tome d’une série de romans : Le livre des rêves. Le personnage principal est un inspecteur en chef de Brixton enquêtant sur des crimes étranges perpétrés par un tueur en série mystique, qui plonge la ville de Londres dans l’angoisse.

— Miss Mortensen, je compte sur vous pour le tome deux ! Vous ne refuserez pas une petite tasse de thé ? J’ai un peu de temps.

Law acquiesce. L’homme lui indique de s’asseoir.

— Alisson, t’as une minute pour nous préparer un bon Darjiling ? lance l’éditeur en passant sa tête par la porte de son bureau.

— Bien sûr, répond la jeune femme, s’exécutant aussitôt.

Forbes range rapidement son plan de travail, puis s’écroule dans son fauteuil :

— Ma belle fille. Elle fait son stage chez moi pour apprendre les ficelles de l’édition. Elle est photographe. Sinon elle travail dans une école. Mais c'est temporaire. Un job alimentaire en attendant de se faire une bonne place chez nous. Elle fait quelques piges au Weird Life. Elle veut devenir reporter.

— C’est votre magazine ?

— C’était. Ma fille, Tamsin, en a hérité. Elle en avait assez de travailler dans un journal qui la bridait. J’ai voulu me lancer dans l’univers du roman. Que ça reste en famille, ça m’arrange. J’ai monté ce magazine, partant de rien.

Alisson entre avec un plateau.

— Pose le sur la table et va te chercher une tasse. Alisson, je te présente Lawrina Mortensen. Notre nouvelle star du roman fantastique.

L’ex-flic se lève, pour serrer la main de la jolie rousse.

— Enchantée, lance la jeune femme, ses yeux grand ouverts, observant la nouvelle cliente de son beau-père.

L’homme bondit de son siège, puis disparaît derrière la porte :

— Faites connaissance les filles, j’arrive !

Toutes deux restent plantées là, sourire aux lèvres.

— Il est comme ça. Toujours bourré d’énergie, comme un aventurier cherchant le Graal.

— Je vois ça. C’est plaisant.

Je la connais. Où l’ai-je déjà… ? Non ! Alisson ! L’amnésique ! Incroyable !

— Tout va bien, miss Mortensen ?

Law n’a pas le temps de répondre, Forbes revient en faisant un boucan monstrueux, poussant la porte avec son dos, une chaise à la main, un mug dans l’autre :

— Voilà !

Il place l’assise en face de son bureau, faisant le tour il pose le mug sur le plateau, puis indique à ses invitées de se mettre à l’aise. Ayden se lance dans une longue tirade au sujet des projets de sa maison d’édition, tout en servant le thé. Il sait que la carrière policière de sa cliente peut faire office d’un excellent argument publicitaire. Mortensen s’assombrit. L’homme la rassure :

— Je n’ai pas l’intention de faire scandale, bien au contraire ! On va redorer le blason de la police. « Celle qui vous a protégés toutes ces années, aujourd’hui vous raconte ce que c’est que d’être un héros de l’ombre » ! lance-t-il en mimant des guillemets.

Lawrina sourit. L’enthousiasme de son éditeur l’amuse. Alisson boit son Darjiling, attentive. Après un échange des plus créatifs, avec la petite équipe, l’ex-inspectrice prend congé de ses hôtes. La belle-fille retourne à son travail. Serrant vigoureusement la main de sa cliente favorite, Forbes la raccompagne jusqu’à la sortie. Une fois dehors, l’ex-flic ne peut s’empêcher de repenser à ce moment insolite qu’elle vient de vivre :

— Le Conan Doyle des enquêtes fantastiques. Il délire ! M'enfin si ça permet de bouffer, que demander de plus ? dit-elle en regardant au loin : c’est Félicia qui va être contente !

J'ai oublié beaucoup d'épisodes de mon existence. Écrire me permet de recoller les morceaux de cet immense puzzle. La vie est une écriture et une lecture d'un tout autre niveau. Tu m'a piégée dans les limbes pour que je quitte la police, pour que je vive enfin. Nos fantômes sont nos maîtres d'apprentissage, nous n'avons pas à en être esclaves. Aujourd’hui j’expérimente. Et j’aime ça.

Law, perdue dans ses pensées, s'apprête à traverser la rue. Brusquement, un homme châtain, la quarantaine, faisant plus jeune, la rattrape, puis l'arrête :

— On regarde avant !

Surprise elle le dévisage, silencieuse, comme hypnotisée.

— Faites attention aux voitures. La taule ne pardonne pas.

Il part. Law reste figée. Elle observe l’inconnu qui continue son chemin, tel un bon samaritain préférant disparaître après avoir accompli sa bonne action.

— Toi, je te connais... marmonne-t-elle les yeux rivé sur son sauveur, que la foule fini par absorber : Alex !

Law s’élance à sa poursuite. Bousculant deux trois passant dans sa course, elle fixe son regard au loin, à la recherche de son ami. Le jeune homme a disparu. Scrutant tous ces visages anonyme qui l’entour, Mortensen finit par abandonner.

Et puis, je lui dirais quoi ? Salut, tu te souviens de notre séjour à Paris, le matin en amoureux, dans ton restau ? Ou, toi et moi allongés dans cette courette enveloppée de plantes grimpantes, à rêvasser sous la voûte céleste ?… N’importe quoi... C’est l’asile garanti...
