Although guns are, by definition, a part of every single mass shooting, many Republican politicians twist themselves into knots trying to blame them on something, anything other than firearms.

On Wednesday, Rep. Pat Fallon (R-Texas) came up with yet another cause of gun violence that doesn’t actually involve guns.

If you’re reading this on your phone, you might want to sit down — because he’s blaming smartphones.

During a House Oversight and Reform Committee hearing on Wednesday, Fallon rejected a call for new gun regulations by suggesting guns were around long before the relatively recent rash of mass shootings began.

“Guns have always been readily available in this country but mass shootings and particularly mass shootings of schools were nonexistent or extremely rare until they became a grisly recent phenomenon,” Fallon told the Committee.

“So what’s changed in the last 50 years?” he asked, before offering his own theory.

“There’s been a noticeable breakdown of the family, there’s been an erosion of faith and there’s been a seismic drop in social interaction in large measure due to the overuse of these dang smartphones and the proliferation of social media, which is probably better described as anti-social media,” he said while holding up his own device as a visual aid.

As mentioned above, Fallon isn’t the only person offering suggestions for reducing gun violence that don’t involve curbing guns ― especially in the wake of last month’s mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

Herschel Walker, a GOP U.S. Senate candidate in Georgia, had a head-scratching suggestion for preventing future massacres.

“What about getting a department that can look at young men that’s looking at women that looking at social media,” he said.

In addition, the supercut video below shows Fox News personalities offering 50 suggestions for curbing gun violence that don’t involve guns but do include improved fencing and decreased phone usage.

Maybe the truckers are catching on?

On Saturday, Feb. 26, anti-vaxxers held a march through downtown Toronto. There were few, if any, truckers in the crowd.

Speaker and educator Elizabeth Moore, a former white supremacist who now studies racist extremism, walked alongside the protest to document who was there and why.

Moore found the march to be dominated by all kinds of questionable characters, including slogan-shouting racists, anti-Islam pamphleteers, anti-globalists, bible-belting abortion-hating evangelists, PPC libertarians, crypto-kooks, and miscellaneous aggrieved parties. She doesn't mention seeing any experts on public health.

You might think the opportunists have taken over, corrupting a genuine grassroots movement. Except that the "trucker" convoy protests were launched by non-truckers with long histories of right-wing extremism, racism and western separatism. It was never about trucking.

I am disappointed but not surprised to see that the "honest trucker" mythology has survived well past its expiry date.

At this past weekend's CPAC (Conservative Political Action Conference) conference in Orlando, Donald Trump complained that Canadian truckers have been treated "worse than drug dealers and rapists," and that they are being "hunted down like enemies."

The Globe and Mail noted that Trump's comments "prompted a passionate standing ovation from the crowd."

But the real crazy of the weekend was Colorado congresswoman Lauren Boebert. “I pray for Ukraine, and I wish them the best,” she said in a Sunday interview with Fox. “But we also have neighbors to the north who need freedom and need to be liberated, and we need that right here at home, as well.”

It should be noted that one of the two Fox interviewers smiled and nodded in response.

Too many people are throwing the word "freedom" around too lightly. They clearly equate "freedom" only with contexts that fit their own biases.

As the Washington Post notes, "Anthony Housefather, a Liberal member of Parliament representing Mount Royal in Montreal, condemned Boebert for equating protests in Canada with the crisis in Ukraine.

“[It] is sad to hear you compare free & democratic Canada to the invasion of Ukraine,” he tweeted Sunday. “If you would like to learn about Canada please reach out.”

Biased ignorance threatens everyone.
