The NAB Honors Lucy & Miltie
April 10, 1988
Tumblr media
On April 10, 1988, the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) initiated Lucille Ball and Milton Berle into their Broadcasting Hall of Fame. The awards were announced at the Annual NAB Convention. Ironically, the ceremony was not broadcast or recorded. Although the Award had been bestowed since 1977, Lucy and Uncle Miltie were the first television broadcasters to be so honored. Previously, the recipients were all radio broadcasters, although fittingly, the first award went to CBS Chairman William Paley, along with Lucy’s pals Bob Hope and Jack Benny, for their radio programs.

Two weeks earlier, Ball and Berle were photographed together at the March 28,1988 Friar's Club Roast honoring Liza Minnelli's Lifetime Achievement in Entertainment, held at the Century Plaza Hotel. (Photo by Vinnie Zuffante / Getty Images)
Tumblr media
After Ball’s passing in 1989, he said he and Lucy had dated casually in the 30's, when she was a Goldwyn Girl and he was doing stand-up on the comedy circuits. Later, Miss Ball and Mr. Berle's wife, Ruth, became close friends. After viewing footage of their work together, Berle said of Miss Ball: "I was amazed... at the rapport we had. You could tell we liked each other personally. A lot of it was ad libbed."
Tumblr media
A 1952 regional TV Guide touted the fall return of Ball and Berle’s TV offerings.
Tumblr media
The following year, the new National TV Guide put Lucy and Berle on the totem pole of TV icons. Both Berle and Ball hold their sponsors products: she, Philip Morris cigarettes, and he a Texaco gas pump.
Tumblr media
Although Lucille Ball guest starred on Berle’s Show “Texaco Star Theatre” in 1948, Berle was off sick, replaced by Walter O'Keefe filled in for an ailing Milton Berle. Berle’s absence delays the first meeting of superstars-to-be Ball and Berle until 1950, when he hosted...
“Show of the Year: Cerebral Palsy Telethon” ~ June 10, 1950
Tumblr media
(Photo, left to right: Gabby Hayes, Roger Clipp, UCP Poster Child, Jane Pickens, and Dennis James.) The telethon was broadcast live from New York City with remotes from Philadelphia. Lucy and Desi were in New York City on their ‘vaudeville tour’ designed to try-out material for “I Love Lucy” and prove to the network and sponsors that they had good chemistry together.
After this chance encounter, Berle and Ball went their separate ways building a TV empire: He for NBC, she on CBS. It was more than a decade until the two TV stars performed together in...
“Milton Berle Hides Out at The Ricardos” (LDCH E11) ~ September 25, 1959
Tumblr media
This was one of the last episodes of “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour” with Berle essentially playing himself, promoting his new book “Earthquake” and, of course, dressing up as Mildred.
In return, as was common at the time, Lucy and Desi did a show for Milton Berle on NBC....
“Sunday Showcase: The Lucy-Desi Milton Berle Special” ~ November 1, 1959
Tumblr media
Lucy and Desi play the Ricardos (although no mention of Little Ricky or the Mertzes), filmed at the Rancho Mirage Casino Hotel in Las Vegas.
Tumblr media
In between the two specials was a televised all-star tribute to First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt on her Diamond Jubilee. Both Lucy and Milton were on the dais, as were many more celebrities. A similar program was aired the following year with Lucy in attendance, Milton Berle was not involved.
Six years went by before their next collaboration, this time on “The Lucy Show” with...
“Lucy Saves Milton Berle” (TLS S4;E12) ~ December 6, 1965
Tumblr media
Milton Berle disguises himself as a drunk to do research for a role. He tells Lucy Carmichael that he is Milton Berle’s twin brother and Lucy vows to get even with Berle for neglecting his brother.
“The Milton Berle Show” (S1;E1) ~ September 9, 1966
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball helps Milton Berle kick off his new variety show filmed at the Hollywood Palace. Despite much hype, this new ABC-TV show lasted just seven episodes.
Meanwhile...
“Lucy and John Wayne” (TLS S5;E10) ~ November 21, 1966
Tumblr media
While Lucy is waiting for Wayne in the studio commissary, Milton Berle makes a silent cameo; nothing more than a walk-through, to great audience reaction.
In his final appearance on “The Lucy Show,” Berle brings along his real-life wife (and Lucille Ball’s friend) Ruth Cosgrove...
“Lucy Meets the Berles” (TLS S6;E1) ~ September 11, 1967
Tumblr media
To earn extra money, Lucy Carmichael takes a job working as Milton Berle’s secretary. When she hears overhears Berle rehearsing a love scene with actress Ruta Lee, she jumps to the conclusion that he is being unfaithful to his wife!
“The Ed Sullivan Show” (S23;E1) ~ September 20, 1970
Tumblr media
Ed Sullivan hosts the ‘Georgie Awards’ for Entertainer of the Year, from Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas. Berle and Ball are on hand to present awards. Lucy gets to present one to her ‘kid’ Carol Burnett.
“The 23rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards” ~ May 9, 1971
Tumblr media
Broadcast on NBC from the Pantages Theatre, hosted by Johnny Carson. Lucille Ball is not nominated, despite the fact that there were only three nominees in her category. Gale Gordon lost to Edward Asner (”The Mary Tyler Moore Show”) and the “Here’s Lucy” writers were nominated for “Lucy Meets the Burtons” (HL S3;E1) but lost to “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” Lucy attended the Awards with her husband Gary, her daughter Lucie, and her son-in-law Phil Vandervoort.
Tumblr media
Milton Berle was also in attendance, photographed here with Jimmy Durante.
“Zenith Presents: A Salute to Television’s 25th Anniversary” ~ September 10, 1972
Tumblr media
This was a 90-minute special on ABC TV taped August 9 to August 12 in Los Angeles. It featured clips from show’s from television’s past. The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences is also 25 years old and honors a select group of people who have made an impact, had popularity, proved longevity, and demonstrated substance. Ball and Berle are both recognized with a silver medallion on a plaque.
During the last season of “Here’s Lucy,” Berle makes a guest appearance...
“Milton Berle Is the Life of the Party” (HL S6;E19) ~ February 11, 1974
Tumblr media
Lucy Carter’s parties are a bore, so she calls a telethon to make a very low bid on Milton Berle to attend her next soiree.
“The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast: Lucille Ball” ~ February 7, 1975
Tumblr media
When Lucille Ball is roasted, Berle is there to turn the spit!
Milton Berle: “Lucille Ball has emerged as the sex symbol for men who no longer care.”
“The Annual Friars Club Tribute Presents a Salute to Gene Kelly” ~ January 5, 1976

Lucille Ball and Milton Berle joined Cyd Charisse, Janet Leigh, and Frank Sinatra for “The Friars Club Presents a Salute to Gene Kelly” on NBC. Also in attendance was Natalie Wood and fellow Hollywood hoofer, Fred Astaire.
“NBC: The First 50 Years - A Closer Look” ~ November 26, 1976
Tumblr media
A four and a half hour extravaganza that naturally featured Milton Berle, but somehow also included CBS star Lucille Ball, four years before she would make the leap to the peacock network.
“CBS Salutes Lucy: The First 25 Years” ~ November 28, 1976
Tumblr media
Milton Berle stands in front of the iconic Brown Derby restaurant to introduce a clip from “Hollywood at Last!” (ILL S4;E16) starring William Holden. The building was razed four years later.
“The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast: Danny Thomas” (S4;E2) ~ December 15, 1976
Tumblr media
Back at Dino’s Vegas rotisserie, it is now Ball and Berle turning the spit on Danny Thomas.
“A Tribute to Mr. Television, Milton Berle” ~ March 26, 1978
Tumblr media
One good tribute deserves another. Lucille Ball joins the cavalcade of stars honoring Uncle Miltie.
“The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast: Jimmy Stewart” (May 10, 1978)

Meanwhile, back at the roast pit. Lucy and Milton fling affectionate barbs at their pal Jimmy Stewart.
“Sinatra: The First 40 Years” ~ January 30, 1980
Tumblr media
Lucy and Miltie are just two of the many honoring ‘Old Blue Eyes’.
“Bob Hope’s 30th Anniversary Television Special” ~ January 18, 1981
Tumblr media
A retrospect of Hope’s first 30 years on TV. Celebrating with Hope are Lucille Ball, Milton Berle, and many, many others.
“Bob Hope’s Women I Love - Beautiful But Funny” ~ February 28, 1982
Tumblr media
A look back at the women Hope has worked with over the years. More than 60 of Bob’s co-stars are presented in studio segments, as well as television and film excerpts. Since Berle is the only other male in the credits, I’m banking that Mildred, not Milton, showed up!
“The Television Academy Hall of Fame” ~ March 4, 1984
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball and Milton Berle are among the first group inducted into the Television Hall of Fame, along with Barbara Walters, David Sarnoff, William Paley, Norman Lear, and Edward R. Murrow.
“Bob Hope’s Unrehearsed Antics of the Stars” ~  September 28, 1984
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball tells Bob Hope - with a fair amount of embellishment for comedic effect - about her audition for the role of Scarlet O’Hara in the 1939 film Gone With The Wind. Milton Berle is also along to share some bloopers with Hope.
“Bob Hopes Buys NBC?” ~ September 17, 1985
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball and Milton Berle have cameo appearances in this Bob Hope special. The premise has Bob staging a telethon to buy NBC, his adopted network, in an hour-long variety special of music, dance, and comedy.  Lucy and Berle met on a telethon in 1950 and it was also the premise of his 1974 “Here’s Lucy” appearance.
“The 38th Primetime Emmy Awards”  ~ September 21, 1986
Tumblr media
Lucy and Milton are presenters in an evening that was memorable for honoring her friend and co-star Red Skelton.
“AFI Life Achievement Award: A Salute to Jack Lemmon” ~ March 10, 1988
Tumblr media
The AFI gives its 1988 Life Achievement Award to Jack Lemmon. The audience is full of celebrity friends, including including Milton Berle and Lucille Ball.
“Happy Birthday, Bob: 50 Stars Salute Your 50 Years at NBC” ~ May 16, 1988
Tumblr media
Singing an original song, this marks Lucille Ball’s last “performance” on television before her death. Berle is also on the show to salute Hope.
“The Princess Grace Foundation Special Gala Tribute to Cary Grant” ~ October 19, 1988
Tumblr media
Cary Grant died in 1986. Due to his close friendship with Princess Grace and her family the proceeds from the evening benefit the foundation named in her honor. Milton Berle is there and Lucille Ball attends with her husband, Gary Morton.  This was the last time that Lucille Ball and Milton Berle were seen on the same program before her death in April 1989.
Tumblr media
In 1989, the NAB Hall of Fame for television inducted Ernie Kovacs (posthumously) and Sid Caesar, both of whom had been guest stars on Lucy’s programs.

Royal Expert
Was it really another 'annus horribilis' for the Queen?
(Richard Pohle/Getty Images)
As 2019 draws to a close, there has been much chatter about whether the year has been another “annus horribilis” for Queen Elizabeth.
Along with the sordid, ongoing saga around Prince Andrew’s friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, the House of Windsor was buffeted by talk of potential rifts between Princes William and Harry and their wives.
Controversy also followed Harry and his wife, Meghan, over everything from privacy and secrecy to suggestions of hypocrisy when it comes to how environmentally friendly they might be. The Queen also found herself much closer to politics than usual as Brexit continued to convulse the U.K.
But does all that really rival 1992, when the Queen famously told a gathering marking her 40 years on the throne that it was an "annus horribilis?"
Maybe not.
“This past year has been challenging for the Royal Family, but on balance, its events haven't threatened the monarchy in the same way,” biographer Sally Bedell Smith, author of Elizabeth the Queen: The Life of a Modern Monarch, said via email.
In 1992, there was a litany of troubles. Andrew Morton’s book Diana: Her True Story “was devastating for Prince Charles — and by extension, his fitness as a future king,” said Smith, and Charles's separation from Diana was an “inevitable consequence.”
The marriages of his brother Andrew and sister Anne also imploded. And in November, fire devastated Windsor Castle, for which Elizabeth has a particular fondness.
That’s not to say, however, that 2019 didn’t have its troubles.
“The only parallel between 1992 and 2019 is Prince Andrew as a source of serious concern,” said Smith, with his involvement in the Epstein scandal staining his reputation.
“The Queen, backed by Prince Charles and Prince William, did the right thing by removing him from his public duties. He is now a ‘minor royal,’ well down the line of succession, so his departure from public life won't have as much impact as it would have in 1992, when he was preceded only by Charles, and his two young sons.”
The problems Andrew faces ”are pretty horrendous,” Ingrid Seward, editor-in-chief of Majesty magazine, said via email.
“It is very sad for the Queen to see her favourite son being ridiculed and in such an unsavoury mess. But he is 60 in February and there is not much the Queen can do about it. He has to get himself out of the mess with as little damage to the [institution] of the monarchy as possible.”
And then there is the controversy that swirled throughout the year around Harry and Meghan.
“The bumps in their life as a royal couple — their antagonism toward the press, the resentment of their tendency to act more like celebrities than members of the Royal Family, the accusations of hypocrisy when they failed to practise what they were preaching — will presumably smooth out in 2020,” said Smith.
As much as there was controversy this year, there were also moments of hope and optimism.
Seward sees several “high notes” to 2019, including the arrival of Harry and Meghan’s first child, Archie; the wedding of the Queen’s “favourite great niece” Gabriella Windsor; and several “successful” high-profile royal tours. “William and Kate proved over and over again how suitable they are to lead the monarchy into the future.”
Smith expects that “to the degree that William and Harry have had a rift in their relationship over the past year, it seems likely that, too, will smooth out in 2020.”
Smith said the Queen continues “to be fit mentally and physically and can be expected to carry out her duties as long as she is able.”
Looking further down the road, Smith considers what might come in 2022, when the Queen will have been on the throne for 70 years.
“If she continues as she is now, there could be an unprecedented Platinum Jubilee celebration in the offing.”
Prince Philip in hospital
(Steve Parsons/The Associated Press)
Prince Philip was taken to hospital in London today for treatment of a pre-existing condition.
Buckingham Palace said the Queen’s 98-year-old husband was taken from her Sandringham estate, where he spends much of his time, to King Edward VII Hospital as a “precautionary measure.”
It’s the second time Philip, who retired from public duties in 2017, has been in hospital around Christmas. In 2011, he missed the Royal Family’s festive celebrations as he recovered from a successful coronary stent procedure.
The Telegraph reported today that it was understood Philip had been under the weather
“for some time”
and had developed a cold recently. He was not taken to hospital by ambulance, and the admission Friday had been planned.
Philip has been in hospital a few times in recent years, including in 2018 for hip replacement surgery. In 2013, he had exploratory abdominal surgery. The previous year, he missed portions of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations while he was treated for a bladder infection.
Philip was last seen in public in May, at the wedding of Gabriella Windsor.
While Philip was in hospital in London on Friday, the Queen was travelling in the other direction, taking the train to Norfolk to begin her Christmas break at Sandringham.
Keeping an eye on Christmas
(Paul Ellis/AFP via Getty Images)
It’s a simple walk to church, but one that draws significant attention as observers look for who’s there — and who isn’t.
This year, the countryside stroll to St. Mary Magdalene church at the Sandringham estate on Christmas Day won’t feature two of the more high-profile members of the Royal Family.
Harry and Meghan have been taking a break from royal duties, and are celebrating Christmas with Meghan’s mother elsewhere. Last year, amid ongoing reports of potential strife between Kate and Meghan, as well as between William and Harry, their walk together to church drew more attention than other years.
Curiosity will also surround whether Prince Philip will be seen. He was taken to hospital in London on Friday morning, Buckingham Palace said.
There may also be two additions to the Christmas morning stroll. Some reports suggest William and Kate’s two elder children, Prince George, six, and Princess Charlotte, four, will join the annual walk for the first time.
Royally quotable
"Why can’t they go home?"
—  Prince William recounts what George and Charlotte have said when they have seen homeless people. William made the comments
during a BBC Christmas specia
l, where he said he makes a point of discussing the struggles other people face as he drives the children to school.
Royals in Canada
(St. Felix Centre)
Brian Harris readily admits he “wasn’t really aware” of who Meghan Markle was when he met her about four years ago.
In her pre-royal days living in Toronto while working as an actor on the TV drama Suits, Meghan was dropping off turkeys for the Thanksgiving meal at the St. Felix Centre, a charity that offers support for homeless and vulnerable people.
But when Harris, the centre’s executive director, now sees a photo from her time volunteering at the centre, he remembers meeting her and recalls someone who was “very humble about the whole thing.”
“She tried to keep a pretty low profile because she wasn’t really trying to make it about herself.”
Things have gone very high-profile for the centre after Meghan and Harry featured it among 12 charities they highlighted on Instagram this month.
“She was just trying to do a good thing,” Harris said of Meghan’s time at the centre, “and so we were very impressed by that, and very appreciative of the fact that now that she has this much bigger platform, she’s still continuing to do good things.”
Harris said the royal recognition has enabled the organization to “reach a much wider audience” and it is “very flattered” to be included in the group of charities highlighted by Harry and Meghan.
“Their influence can’t be understated,” Harris said.
“They have such an enormous platform and such an enormous reach … depending on how deeply involved they get with a particular charity, it can be immensely life-altering for that organization.”
He said the centre’s next challenge, early in the new year, is seeing if Meghan might consider a return visit in 2020.
“We’ve been trying to plant that seed that if her and Harry, or even just her … happen to be back on this side of the pond any time soon, that we would love to have them pop by for a visit and see the impact of their activities over the last few months.”

What does this all mean?
Charles, as the next (and arguably imminent) King, has his own set of requirements set forth by The Royal Family that are different than those delegated to the Cambridges or Sussexes.  He is not really relevant in this conversation.
Her Majesty’s government has a strategy.  That strategy is to promote William and Catherine as the future King and Queen of the United Kingdom.  Part of that is developing a working relationship with people outside of your realm.  It is for this reason that William and Catherine have been embarking on more tours of places with different monarchies (Sweden, Norway, Bhutan, Jordan) and more visits to places with charged political landscapes (China, Japan, Israel, Vietnam, the Occupied Palestinian Territories).  It will be their responsibility as King and Queen to maintain and develop these relationships in the coming years.  Note that the frequency and intensity of these visits was amplified significantly after William’s departure from EAAA, Philip’s retirement, and the Cambridges’ permanent relocation to Kensington Palace.  The Queen’s interest with respect to the royal calendar for the Cambridges is to prepare them to be King and Queen.  It is for this reason they do not tour Commonwealth nations as often as, say, Harry does.  They do not have to nurture that relationship - that is what Harry and Meghan are for, as of Harry’s appointment as Commonwealth Youth Ambassador.  They don’t give as many Commonwealth tours to William and Catherine because that’s not what their primary focus is or should be.
Harry was appointed the Commonwealth Youth Ambassador - his most significant appointment to date - in April of 2018.  In this role, he needs to continue to reinforce and nurture the existing relationships between the UK and the rest of the Commonwealth.  Meghan joined that role upon her marriage in 2018.  He doesn’t have to venture outside of the Commonwealth because his role within the Commonwealth is both important and well-defined.
The Royal Family has split the Cambridge and Sussex international duties to focus beyond the realm of the Commonwealth and explicitly within the realm of the Commonwealth, respectively.  Based on this empirical data, it seems that William and Catherine have absolutely taken seriously their role as future King and Queen - evidenced by their visiting more countries overall, more countries with different monarchies, more countries with politically charged climates, and fewer Commonwealth nations.  Harry and Meghan have done outstanding work within the Commonwealth, which is exactly in line with their duties as The Duke and Duchess of Sussex and for Harry’s duty as the Commonwealth Youth Ambassador.
In conclusion, you’re wrong.  William and Catherine have done plenty of work to prepare themselves as the future King and Queen of the United Kingdom on an international scale.  Harry and Meghan will devote a large majority of their international work for the rest of their lives supporting the Commonwealth, while hardly ever venturing outside, I would imagine.  Each couple is actively working towards the end goals set for them by the well-oiled machine that is the monarchy.  To have each couple overlap their goals is inefficient - why bother?  They each have their different areas of expertise under control, as evidenced by the data I have compiled above.
Next time you want to argue facts, then please bring facts to the table.  Your objective rhetoric pales in comparison to empirical data collection.  Check your facts, sweetheart.  You’re wrong.

BOB HOPE
May 29, 1903 - July 27, 2003
Tumblr media
Bob Hope was born Lesley Townes Hope in England in 1903. During his extensive career (in virtually all forms of media) he received five honorary Academy Awards. After a brief marriage to his vaudeville partner Grace Troxell, he wed singer and actress Dolores Read, with whom he adopted four children. Although they stayed together for the rest of his life, their marriage was not always an easy one, with Hope having a reputation as a womanizer, and constantly his constant travel for performances.  He was so busy on screen and off that he was facetiously dubbed “Rapid Robert”.
Aside from his collaboration with Lucille Ball, he was known for his partnership with crooner Bing Crosby on the “Road” films, his devotion to the USO, and his love of golf.
Tumblr media
In 1945, Desi Arnaz was the orchestra leader on Bob Hope’s NBC radio show.
HOPE (about Lucy and Desi): “Lips and hands were all over one and another. I never saw a couple loving each other more after Bogie and Bacall.”
Tumblr media
Ball and Hope had made four feature films together: Sorrowful Jones (1949), Fancy Pants (1950), The Facts of Life (1960), and Critic’s Choice (1963).
Tumblr media
Hope and Ball first collaborated on television on September 14, 1950 on the third installment of “The Star-Spangled Revue”, Hope’s first regular television program.  Lucy played the mayor of NYC and Bob her henpecked husband.
Tumblr media
Kicking off season six of “I Love Lucy” in October 1956, Bob Hope guest-starred as as himself. The story was built around the real-life fact that Hope was part owner of the Cleveland Indians Baseball team.
Tumblr media
Two weeks later, in one of TV’s first network cross-overs, the entire cast of “I Love Lucy” appeared on “The Bob Hope Chevy Show”. The premise of the sketch (later colorized for home video) supposed that Bob, instead of Desi, married Lucy and became her bandleader husband on the sitcom.
Tumblr media
In October 1959, Lucy and Hope were two of many celebrities paying tribute to “Eleanor Roosevelt on Her Diamond Jubilee” aired as part of “Sunday Showcase” on NBC.
Tumblr media
On January 10, 1960, Hope and Ball were two of the stars profiled in “Hedda Hopper’s Hollywood.”  Lucille is seen in front of her Desilu Playhouse on the backlot. Standing amid a pile of suitcases, Bob Hope talks about Hollywood in general, presenting almost a monologue on the subject.
Hope:“Hedda has a fabulous fund of Hollywood knowledge. She has to wear those big hats to keep the secrets from leaking out.”
Tumblr media
On February 15, 1961, Ball served as a presenter on “The Bob Hope Buick Sports Show.” Boxer Floyd Patterson could not attend the ceremony on the West Coast, so Hope shows footage of Lucille Ball presenting him the award on the East Coast, where she was appearing in Wildcat on Broadway.
Tumblr media
On October 24, 1962 Bing Crosby and Juliet Prowse joined Lucy for “The Bob Hope Show”. In a sketch, Lucille plays a District Attorney and Bob a gangster named Bugsy.
Tumblr media
During the “Bob Hope Special: TV Guide Awards” on April 14, 1963, Lucille Ball is nominated for Favorite Female Performer. Ball is not present so a still photo of her is shown instead. The winner is Carol Burnett.
Tumblr media
On a May 5, 1963 “Toast of the Town” (aka “The Ed Sullivan Show”) from New York City, Bob Hope and Lucille Ball promote their new movie Critic’s Choice.
Tumblr media
The pair continued their Critic’s Choice promotion tour that same day (May 5, 1963) by appearing on “What’s My Line?”  This would be their last film together and one they both considered a failure.
Tumblr media
On April 19, 1964, Hope and Ball teamed for a CBS Comedy Special titled “Mr. and Mrs.” in which they played themselves and a husband and wife acting team.
Tumblr media
Hope made a cameo appearance in "The Lucy Show” (TLS S3;E2) on September 28, 1964, that starred Jack Benny as a plumber with hidden talents.
Tumblr media
In “Bob Hope Presents Chrysler Theatre: Have Girls, Will Travel” on October 16, 1964, Lucille Ball does a cameo as Hope’s wife in a cast of ‘girls’ that includes Jill St. John, Marilyn Maxwell, and Rhonda Fleming.
Tumblr media
“A Bob Hope Comedy Special: Bob Hope’s Leading Ladies” on September 28, 1966, Lucile Ball played herself and arrived in Bob Hope’s bedroom on a chauffeur-driven adult-size tricycle! During their scene, old friends Ball and Hope continually crack each other up.
Tumblr media
“Jack Benny’s Carnival Nights” (March 20, 1968) featured both Ball and Hope, although they did not share any scenes together.
Tumblr media
Bob Hope was there when Lucille Ball won her fourth (and final) competitive Emmy Award on a May 19, 1968 telecast from The Hollywood Palladium. Don Adams and Bill Cosby also won.
Tumblr media
“The Dean Martin Christmas Special” (December 19,1968) featured many celebrities including Hope and Ball in (separate) cameos. Lucy promises that the kids at the City of Hope Medical Center will have a Merry Christmas.
Tumblr media
Bob Hope, Lucille Ball (and dozens of other stars) make guest appearances on “The Dean Martin Show” sixth season opener on September 17, 1970.
Tumblr media
On “Jack Benny’s 20th Anniversary Show” (November 16, 1970) Lucy plays Benny’s maid, Janet. Bob does a monologue about Benny but does not share the screen with Lucille Ball.
Tumblr media
That same date (November 16, 1970) Ball appeared on “The Bob Hope Show: Bringing Back Vaudeville.” Bob plays a hypnotist who takes Lucy out of the audience to be his stooge.
Tumblr media
“Swing Out, Sweet Land” (November 29, 1970) was a star-studded patriotic special featuring Lucille Ball (voice of the Statue of Liberty) and Bob Hope entertaining the troops - at Valley Forge!
Tumblr media
“Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Jack Benny* But Were Afraid To Ask” (March 10, 1971) featured Bob Hope in a quick cameo as a juggler and Lucille Ball plays a star-struck young Goldwyn Girl seduced by leading man Benny.
Tumblr media
Ball and Hope were both recognized with plaques on “Zenith Presents: A Salute to Television’s 25th Anniversary” on September 10, 1972.

Tumblr media
Naturally, Hope is on the dais for the “Dean Martin Celebrity Roast of Lucille Ball” on February 7, 1975.
Bob Hope: “Lucy’s always doing nice things. Even though she’s not with Desi anymore she got him a job as a dialogue coach on ‘Chico and the Man’.”
Tumblr media
“Bob Hope’s World of Comedy” (October 29, 1969) naturally included Lucille Ball.
Tumblr media
“NBC: The First Fifty Years” (November 26, 1976) was a four and a half hour extravaganza that featured NBC’s biggest star Bob Hope, but somehow also included CBS star Lucille Ball, four years before she would leap over to the peacock network.
Tumblr media
Two days, later (November 28, 1976) “CBS Salutes Lucy: The First 25 Years” includes Hope singing his signature song “Thanks for the Memory” with special lyrics about Lucy.
Tumblr media

Tumblr media

USA TODAY
Published 8:12 AM EDT Oct 12, 2018
Princess Eugenie of York married her longtime commoner boyfriend, Jack Brooksbank, Friday in a stunning Peter Pilotto gown and a royal Russian-style tiara, in a lower-key repeat of the nuptials that enchanted the world when Prince Harry wed his American girlfriend Meghan Markle at Windsor Castle in May.
The new couple left St. George’s Chapel and kissed on the steps while a gaggle of bridesmaids and page boys, including Princess Charlotte and Prince George, followed them out. They climbed into the glass-enclosed Scottish State Coach for a 15-minute carriage procession through Windsor, past gathered fans on the High Street.
The assembled guests at the second royal wedding in five months featured Eugenie’s many royal relatives led by Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, the bride’s grandparents, who entered the church to a trumpet fanfare.
Harry and Meghan, who wore a deep navy blue coat-and-dress outfit by Givenchy with a matching fascinator, entered the church to cheers, as did Prince William and Duchess Kate of Cambridge, dressed in a claret-colored dress, but they slipped in quickly to avoid grabbing too much of the spotlight.
The bride’s dress, by Peter Pilotto and Christopher De Vos of the British-based label Peter Pilotto, featured a fitted bodice and full pleated skirt with an off-the-shoulder neckline that folds around the shoulders to a low back that draped into a flowing full-length train. The low back feature was at the specific request of Eugenie who had surgery at age 12 to correct scoliosis, according to Buckingham Palace.
She wore the Greville Emerald Kokoshnik Tiara, lent to her by the queen. The diamonds-and-emeralds tiara was made by Boucheron in 1919 in the “kokoshnik” style popularized in the Russian Imperial Court. Her diamond and emerald earrings were a wedding gift from the groom.
The royal bride may not be as well known outside Britain, let alone her groom, 32-year-old Jack Brooksbank, a former bartender turned tequila brand rep, but a royal wedding is still something in the United Kingdom and the ancient town of Windsor was celebrating.
Even before dawn, hours before the ceremony was to begin in St. George’s Chapel inside the castle gates, people gathered in the narrow flag-festooned streets in front of souvenir shops stuffed with royal wedding knickknacks (although much of it featured Harry and Meghan).
The wind was described as gusty, which was a problem for the female guests and the elaborate hats that are required head gear at a royal wedding. But it didn’t rain and by the time of the carriage procession, the sun was peeping through the clouds.
Celebrity guests were among the first of the arrivals, including Chelsy Davy, Prince Harry’s former girlfriend who is a close friend of Eugenie. Liv Tyler, Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell were also spotted entering the church. Cara Delevingne and Demi Moore were also there.
Eugenie’s uncle, the queen’s youngest son Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, and his wife Sophie, Countess of Wessex, were among the first senior royals to arrive, with their son James, Viscount Severn. Their daughter, Lady Louise Windsor, will be in the bridal party.
They were followed by Eugenie’s aunt, Princess Anne and her husband, Sir Timothy Laurence, and her daughter Zara Tindall and her husband Mike Tindall, and her son, Peter Phillips and his wife Autumn.
Large signs at the castle’s ticket booth welcomed people to the wedding, but many visitors earlier in the week seemed unaware of what was going to happen, the Associated Press reported.
“No interest,” said Michael Taylor, a drummer from Chicago who toured the imposing castle Wednesday — but didn’t know about the wedding. “I don’t know anything about her. If she walked past me right now, I wouldn’t even know.”
Eugenie, 28, and one of Harry’s cousins, is the younger daughter of Queen Elizabeth II’s second son, Prince Andrew, Duke of York, and his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, and the sister of Princess Beatrice, 30. Sarah wore a Kelly green dress and hat (the dress designed by local Windsor company Emma Louise Design), while Beatrice was in a royal blue off-the-shoulder dress from Ralph & Russo with a headband-style fascinator.
Eugenie and her sister are among the eight grandchildren of the queen, 92, and her husband, Prince Philip, 97, who led the extended royal family at the wedding. Philip is frail, retired from public life, and still recovering from hip surgery but he walked unaided behind his wife into the church. The queen was dressed in a pale blue coat and dress outfit and hat.
On the eve of the wedding Eugenie and Brooksbank were interviewed on ITV, which carried the wedding live in the U.K. Eugenie said she was so excited about the wedding she will be “running down the aisle.”
She and her father arrived at the wedding in a Rolls Royce Phantom VI, presented to the queen in 1978 for her Silver Jubilee. It was also the same Rolls the former Kate Middleton rode in to her wedding to Prince William at Westminster Abbey in 2011.
Eugenie carried a bouquet that complemented her dress and tiara and also featured a royal floral tradition: Besides lily of the valley, Stephanotis pips, hints of baby blue thistles, white spray roses and trailing ivy, the bouquet contained sprigs of myrtle from Queen Victoria’s Osbourne House. A sprig from a posy she was once given was planted against the terrace walls there and continues to thrive. Since 1858, royal bouquet have contained sprigs from that myrtle.
Special guests representing British charities assembled  inside the castle gates near the chapel where they watched guests and the wedding party arrive.
Some of the 800-plus guests and 1,200 special guests representing charities began arriving around 4 a.m. ET, two hours before the start of the ceremony.
Prince William and Duchess Kate’s two eldest children, Prince George, 5, and Princess Charlotte, 3, served as page boy and bridesmaid – their third family wedding in 15 months. Wearing white outfits by Amaia Arrieta of Amaia Kids, the children appeared lively and excited.
The only senior member of the family who did not attend was Camilla Duchess of Cornwall, the wife of Prince Charles, Eugenie’s uncle, who had a long-planned prior engagement at a school in Scotland.
As happened at the earlier wedding, the ceremony was followed by a carriage procession through part of Windsor in a shorter version of the carriage procession Harry and Meghan had.
After the procession, the families assembled in the White Drawing Room at the castle to take the official pictures. Guests then were scheduled to attend  lunch hosted by the queen at the castle, followed by an evening reception hosted by Eugenie’s parents at Royal Lodge on the castle estate.
The Sussex wedding featured two receptions, one hosted by the queen and one hosted by Prince Charles that evening. Eugenie and Jack will have a two-day reception, with an all-day festival-style event scheduled for Saturday at the Royal Lodge.
After the wedding, Eugenie, who works for a London art gallery, is expected to keep her royal title, HRH Princess Eugenie, but will likely add Mrs. Jack Brooksbank.
