Day6 Deep Dive #2/3: Welcome (Back) To The Show

Day6 was formed by JYP Entertainment, home of Stray Kids, Got7, and TWICE, and debuted in 2015 with, you guessed it, six members, with Sungjin on vocals, Young K on bass, Wonpil on keyboard, Dowoon on drums, Jae (who left in 2022) on guitar and vocals, and Junhyeok (who left soon after debut in 2016) also on keyboard. This makes them the sixth bonafide band I’ve covered on the blog, after The Rose, Lucy, Rolling Quartz, ONEWE, and Xdinary Heroes. 

Here are my credentials: I would consider myself a fan of Day6, sure, having heard a good amount of their singles, some b-sides, and watching a bit of B-T-S content. I’m also a fan of Jae’s solo career. But I haven’t had the chance to experience a comeback in real time yet, and now that the members are back from military service, I figured now was a good chance for a deep dive. So let’s get into it!

AN: It's Day6 comeback and I just missed them so so much!! Just a small tmi, I used to write songfics for Stray Kids using Day6's songs, so writing this kinda reminds me of my old fics. (All of them are deleted now, unfortunately.)

Mark Lee ; I Smile

Mark just reminds me of I Smile so so much. It feels like ex-lovers who crossed paths once again. One is happy while the other one is not, wasn't able to move on properly and while he sees you happy with someone else, he tries to be supportive of you!! Mark will congratulate you even though it feels bitter for him, and will give you an assuring smile so that the frown on your face could turn upside down. 

Huang Renjun ; You were beautiful

Of course Renjun's You Were Beautiful I MEAN look at this beautiful creature and tell me that he doesn't suit YWB??? He's that lover that you once had. Your relationship with him was the very best, and was everything that you want BUT sometimes, relationship do not work out and unfortunately, it didn't work out with you and Renjun. So the only thing you can do is reminisce the beautiful memories of him. 

Lee Jeno ; Letting Go

Already crying with this one BUT Jeno's Letting Go. It's just. It suits him so much, like a last goodbye to someone that has been very very dear to you. All the time you had together, all the things you two had done, will be gone in just a simple goodbye. You know it's hard for both of you, but it's for the best to just let go of each other even though there's a small hope inside you two that wanted to try again, but chose not to. 

Lee Donghyuck ; I Would

This one felt like regret and rage. It suits Haechan so much because I feel like he's very emotional when it comes to relationships especially on fights. I Would sounds like someone regretting letting go of someone because of a petty mistake. Now he could do nothing but to yearn and he wanted to win you back, but he can't because he felt like he already lost even though he hasn't started yet. 

Na Jaemin ; I Loved You

I Loved you = Jaemin. End of discussion. Jaemin felt like a first love whom slowly drifted away from you. It sounds like a first love that hit you hard like a truck, (really.) but that's the problem! Jaemin doesn't reciprocate your feelings. You're in an unrequited love with him, and it took you YEARS to moved on from him. But fate loves to play games because at the moment that you lost your feelings to Jaemin, he suddenly began noticing you. 

Zhong Chenle ; Goodbye Winter

In contrast to Chenle's summer vibe, he suits Goodbye Winter so much. He reminds you of winter, the day you two broke up after the many trials you two had. You remember how cold it was, on the outside of your apartment as you talked to him. Tears streaming on your face, and you can see the pain in his eyes too. You two agreed that this is the end, and at the first fall of snow, you two shared a hug before he leaves you there. 

Park Jisung ; First Time

Yes First Time is lively BUT let me tell you, the lyrics are just something else. First Time suits Jisung so much because it feels nostalgic. Like a childhood friend who was separated and found each other again. The problem is, Jisung doesn't remember you at all. And while you yearn from afar, Jisung is completely clueless about you. It hurts but there's nothing you can do at all, so at the end, you let go at the idea of having your childhood friend back.

The members were out on their own today, so he was left all alone, crying as he longed for you, but couldn't. You were someone else's.

I thought what a better time to have a little bit of a week-long revival of the fandom and generate a little bit of hype ! okay I lied, jae is actually pissing me off talking about day6... I don't have any obtuse feelings towards him but his little spiel on how he felt about day6 naming their previous album fourever felt SO tactless on his end. especially when day6 is promoting in korea right this second. first of all if I'm being honest I do not think for once that day6 named such an important comeback album emphasizing the number four to be petty. not even ONCE do I think they did that and I don't think that anyone who actually likes day6 and has been a my day for a long time would or should feel like the band would do something like that. jae feeling hurt, jae feeling erased, jae even feeling possible regret is justified. he is absolutely in the right to feel that way but the release of the interview at this time feels so intentional. more intentional than the band possibly naming their album to "get back" at a previous member. he reiterates that he doesn't think the members are behind this and I agree, but why are we all forgetting that jae decided not to renew his contract with jype on his own terms? when the four members did... the reason day6 is together today is because the remaining four members continued to promote their group despite hiatus and enlistments, and it's because of their combined effort that we still HAVE day6 now. so why is it "unfair" for them to be prideful in being four members now?

jae is part of day6's past and his contributions to their success and their growth won't be erased no matter what anyone does but at the end of the day... jae left day6 on his own volition. don't argue that he left the company not the band because it doesn't work like that actually, and he can speak on his history and his relationships and his feelings as much as he likes but I'd be lying if I said as a my day I wasn't bothered by that. especially KNOWING the boys would probably not or even be allowed to say anything back under contract. If this interview gave people closure then great, but if it's more fuel for people to continue this debate on whether what day6 did was right or wrong then I wish he never spoke on this candidly at all.

Or at least Napoleon imagines them as two, albeit only one being uncovered in sight. He can't help the way his brain works about those enticing shiny stones after all these years at sea. Although he's never ever seen eyes evoking such fascination.

Jean's right eye is covered by a white, shiny seashell with an irregular shape, adorned with a big pearl in its very center.

"I've never seen a mermaid with an eyepatch."

"And I've never seen a pirate missing one."

Napoleon can't help but show his ugly laughter, entertained by the clever comeback of the otherwise quiet man; it caught him by surprise, and besides, breaking the ice at last feels good. In the short duration of knowing Jean, he's seen both his relaxed and defensive sides well enough to know which one he wants to be on.

If anything, the merman is seemingly quite alright being in Napoleon's company. Plenty of opportunities to drag him underwater and drown him, as the pirate has been roaming the island and is conveniently surrounded by every sea monster's preferred death trap. Heck, he'd gone as far as to swim together with Jean, and nothing happened. A bit more and he'd start believing that Jean truly isn't at fault for the shipwreck that the self-confident captain fails to find a logical explanation for.

"If you trust me, I can take you to the neighboring island where the wreck and your shipmates are. But you have to forget about me."

Being washed away on the beach of another piece of land on a wood board would be... somewhat believable, if it weren't for the fact a few days have already passed, and that Napoleon will return on the same wood board. Of course, even if he were to explain what or who actually saved his life, they won't believe a thing anyway.

"I can't forget about you, Jean. I never will."

Hand placed on the merman's cold one, instead of making Jean look at him, Napoleon's confession does the opposite. It's fine though. Another look into the enchanting gem of an eye adorning Jean's visage and Napoleon will abandon all wishes to be saved.

Comeback Celebration: Revisiting The Book of Us: The Demon

So, this was the album that made me pay attention to Day6! Though it was their next album, Negentropy, that put them on my favorite artists list, The Demon is definitely a standout album from 2020. After that album, I became enough of a fan to start exploring their past tracks--during which time I experienced, of course, the obligatory listening to "Shoot Me" for three days nonstop phase.

The Demon was a huge emotional statement that met a lot of people exactly where they were at in 2020, I think, and I was one of those people. I'm super picky about albums--though I love lots of songs every year, not many albums are cohesive enough for my taste. The Demon, though, was an album I loved listening to all the way though. It managed to be both a bitter, exhausted blur & a collection of wildly catchy songs that could each stand on their own. In celebration of Day6's return, let's take a look at The Demon again--it's been a while since I've heard some of these tracks!

1. Day and Night

This isn't my favorite Day6 song, but it's definitely top five. I think it was my favorite track from this album right from the beginning--though "1 to 10" was tough competition--and it's definitely still my most-listened track from The Demon. Actually, I bet it's my most-listened track from Day6 as a whole.

Listening again, it's wild just how comforting I find the melodies. Two lines in, and I already feel like I'm coming home from a long trip. The harmonies are wonderful, and I'm obsessed with Sungjin's performance here. I think what I love most about "Day and Night" is that, even as it manages to be genuinely sonically cheerful, pulling itself together into a friendly, upbeat mask, the signature Day6 angst still shows through. (Come to think of it, that's also what I love most about my actual favorite Day6 song, "everyday we fight".) The vocals seem all-to-frequently on the verge of bursting into a full-on wailing ballad, but they're always reined back in, as if the speaker is reminding themself--no, you're singing a cute pop song, you can't be sad. Maybe it's that push-and-pull I find comforting--there's just enough overwhelming emotion hidden in this song that my own emotions can find an outlet, without really having to delve into how crappy I feel. It's like the perfect amount of escapism? Though, at this point, it might just be that I know this song like the back of my hand, and that's what I find comforting--I really did live off this one for a couple of years.

2. Zombie

This is the least exciting track off the album, but I think that's kind of the point. Day6 songs are big and dramatic, like, all the time (which is, of course, why I stan them). So the most impactful emotional statement of this comeback was just... making the title track this kind of dull, soft number. Don't get me wrong, though, because I do actually like this song! The chorus is iconic--I would recognize it anywhere--and that Coldplay-esque electric guitar is gorgeous. Funny enough, I remember "Zombie" being softer & quieter than it actually is. Maybe I remember singing it to myself, a half-whisper without the instrumental, more than I remember the actual song?

3. Tick Tock

Now this is what exhaustion sounds like. This song has a bunch of beautiful vocal moments going on--I think they're what makes this album so listenable, even in its darkest moods. When the vocals aren't there, though, and you're just left with that plodding guitar? And that incessant drum, too, forcing you into a pace just slow enough to be uncomfortable? That's atmosphere, that's for sure. No wonder I loved this song in my junior year of high school--it totally understood me in my silence, silence and barely getting by, dreading every day that I had to put one foot in front of the other.

4. Love me or Leave me

I was not expecting this, of all things, to be Day6's #3 song on Spotify. Like, I listened to it as much as the next guy for all of 2020... and a lot of 2021... but I don't know, it was never my favorite from the album? And I definitely don't like it more than "Better Better" </3

... Okay, I did forget how delightful this instrumental is. The house influences are meshed in so perfectly, especially in the prechoruses. It's fun because it's dance music, but it's also fun because it's inventive in some very exciting ways, and the melodies make my heart feel like it's going to explode!! Yeah, I guess I kind of get it...

5. STOP

The only thing I remembered about this song is that the guitar tastes like dirt--which I was definitely right about, like damn that's an interesting texture! The instrumental is... unpleasantly exciting? (Shoutout to the video-game-shooting noises, whatever those are.) "STOP" is also super singable--I'm surprised I didn't remember how delightful these vocal parts are! I've developed more of a taste for rock music over the years, which might be why I'm enjoying this one so much on revisiting--it might be my new favorite from the album, actually!

6. 1 to 10

This remains a classic, straightforward angst track! There's plenty of lovely belting in the verses and the chorus, reminding me that I'm human and need to breathe.

7. Afraid

Isn't there a Reddit poll somewhere that says this is the best Day6 song ever? I see why it sticks with people--it's loud, but all the layers don't turn the sadness to anger, instead they turn it to this all-consuming, desperate hope instead. The chorus is this expansive, energetic, living thing, and some of its life rubs off on me--what am I going to do with all this sadness? Make it into courage, I guess.

Overall...

Wow, this was fantastic--I remembered The Demon as a solid album, but not this compelling. I remember this album as The Burnout Album; in my memory, it's static, forever in quarantine. Revisiting The Demon, though, I was fully invested in lipsync karaoke for at least half of these tracks. I think it's the vocal performances that fill each song with energy and motion, and they give the album its cohesiveness, too--they make The Demon's world flow together into this strange pop-rock landscape that's consistent, if only in that it can't seem to settle comfortably anywhere. Pop-rock usually tries to find a happy medium between the two genres, taking the most compatible parts of each, but The Demon seems to pick the least compatible parts and pull them together (quite impressively, I think) by sheer force of will. I'm really in love with all the creativity in this album, the variety of influences it draws from; and, looking back, I definitely see that chaotic spark in it, the one that got me sooo obsessed with Negentropy in 2021, even if The Demon's mood is a lot darker.

An 'unbelievable' welcome return. DAY6, who finished their military service, proved their potential as the representative K-pop band by taking the 'Best Band' and 'Best Rock Ballad' trophies at 'ASEA 2024' all while simultaneously making their comeback as a full group. DAY6, the protagonists of 'You Were Beautiful' and 'Time of Our Life' shot to the top and shined as of recent. All the songs on their new album 'Fourever' charted, and achieved the top spot on major music charts in Korea with the title track 'Welcome to the Show'. Their 1,064-day hiatus has now been overshadowed. DAY6 is continuing in 'work mode' as if to quench their thirst, and expectations are high for the brilliant second page they will write.

Q It was the first award ceremony as a whole group after being discharged from the military. How do you feel about winning two awards?

▲ It was a huge honor to be invited to the first ASEA 2024 awards ceremony, but we're so thankful that we won the Best Band award. Thank you to NewsN and @ Style for giving us such a great award. Above all, we want to say thank you and love you to My Day (official fandom name) for always showing great love and support. Young K also received the 'The Best Rock Ballad' trophy with his first full solo album released last year. We're so happy to receive this precious award not only as a group but also as a solo artist at the first ceremony as a whole group after being discharged from the military. Thank you very much once again.

Q How does it feel to be performing performances that are not alone like the lyrics of the new song "Welcome to the Show" after the full comeback?

▲ It's been a long time since we attended an award ceremony as a whole group, and it's been about 5 years since we performed in Japan, so we were even more excited. It was a huge feeling to be able to sing DAY6's representative songs in front of those who love and care about K-pop. These days, with our loyal members and fans, we couldn't be happier or more full of love. Like the lyrics of 'Welcome to the Show', we plan to continue to run as DAY6 as we give it all, so we hope you continue to stay with us.

Q. Since you released an album after 3 years of hiatus, I think this comeback was a time to quench your thirst. How do you feel about the whole group?

▲ The entire group has been waiting for this comeback just as much as the fans. You'll never know how happy and excited we were when we were working on this album. We worked hard with the mindset of repaying the fans who waited for us for a long time.

Q If you were to score the result of this album, how many points would you like to give?

▲ Since it's been a while since we released a full group album, we had a lot of musical greed and what what we wanted to fulfill. We tried our best to embody all of them. As always, we made it with all my heart with the attitude that any of the songs could become the title. We're so proud that you all love the songs on the album, including the title track 'Welcome to the Show'. There are so many things we're thankful for along with the release of the album. The score for this album result…we want to give i 100 points (laughs).

Q Since you were together with the members for the first time in a long time, were there any new aspects you learned or areas where you felt you had grown?

▲ We definitely felt relaxed and felt that we got to meet again in a healthier way. Especially so is our attitude towards music. While preparing for this album, we tried to make the bass, drum, keyboard, and guitar sound richer, and tried to give it more depth in terms of genre as well. Hopefully the listeners felt that the sound was more detailed and detailed than the previous ones.

Q The team's status changed drastically during the hiatus. During the military enlistment period, 'You Were Beautiful' and 'Time of Our Life' recorded unusual chart rankings, and I wonder how you felt when you encountered the love?

▲ When we first heard the news, we thought, "Is this real?" and "What's going on?" We were definitely surprised and amazed. We're so thankful that we can receive such great love. Please look forward to DAY6's new music that made with a pleasant sense of pressure due to undeserved love!

Q What do you think is the secret behind Day6’s songs being able to 'turn around'?

▲ From the beginning of our debut, we promised to make 'timeless music' together, but that was only possible because of our efforts. Rather than focusing on the results while working on the music, we focused our hearts on the music we making at that time. Thinking like that, the music we've made as DAY6 has really been able to touch the heart of listeners.

Q. When it comes to DAY6, I think of being a "Step Band" and a "Growth Textbook." Were you sure that the day would come when you see such bright lights?

▲ I think we're growing more beautifully than we could've ever vaguely dreamed of in the early days of debut. We had faith that good music would work someday. We also had pride and confidence in our music, so there were always expectations that people would recognize us someday and that more people would sympathize with our songs someday. Now that our expectations have become a reality, we're just grateful. We will continue to grow as DAY6.

Q It seems you're as close to your family as you are to each other now, what do you mean to each other?

▲ We like to describe it as the most precious 'everything' in our lives. It felt like we were 'a place to stay' for each other. It was thanks to the members we never felt lonely even when were traveling and keeping busy. We spend more time with each other than with our parents, so we feel like we are 'home' to each other.

Q This year marks the 10th anniversary of your debut. Can you give me some ideas on your future plans?

▲ The new album ‘Fourever’ is a bit of an album that serves as a bridge between DAY6 of the past and DAY6 of the future. We're grateful to be able to present a meaningful album 10 years after our debut, so thank you. Next year will already be the 10th anniversary of our debut. We're looking forward to seeing what DAY6 will look like when as we turn ten. We'll will work harder and busier to repay the love of our fans.

Q The military enlistment time is over, and you've have renewed your contracts. Act 2 of DAY6 is just beginning. What kind of music do you want to show in the future?

▲ There won't be any major changes, but we definitely plan on show how we're moving forward. Our music was able to be known and loved so much thanks to the fans who recommended DAY6 music to their acquaintances. We'll continue to make music that our fans are proud to recommend. Thank you. ♥

Day6 Deep Dive #1/3: Welcome (Back) To The Show

Day6 was formed by JYP Entertainment, home of Stray Kids, Got7, and TWICE, and debuted in 2015 with, you guessed it, six members, with Sungjin on vocals, Young K on bass, Wonpil on keyboard, Dowoon on drums, Jae (who left in 2022) on guitar and vocals, and Junhyeok (who left soon after debut in 2016) also on keyboard. This makes them the sixth bonafide band I’ve covered on the blog, after The Rose, Lucy, Rolling Quartz, ONEWE, and Xdinary Heroes. 

Here are my credentials: I would consider myself a fan of Day6, sure, having heard a good amount of their singles, some b-sides, and watching a bit of B-T-S content. I’m also a fan of Jae’s solo career. But I haven’t had the chance to experience a comeback in real time yet, and now that the members are back from military service, I figured now was a good chance for a deep dive. So let’s get into it!

like the last 'complete' day6 comeback was entropy/sweet chaos era back in 2019 - four fucking years, then we had demon/zombie era that was so fucking bittersweet because the album is so good but like zombie/afraid and sungjin going on a fucking hiatus because of mental health, then we had eod and even though i appreciate and understand the reasons to me the unit debut was so hard (mainly for personal reasons like i cannot listen to where the sea sleeps like phisically cannot - right through me is anothe story we love her in this household) and then everything that happened and i wont even goes into detail because somehow i sill have a little bit of respect for the guy, and then negentropy and sungjin trauma inducing live and younghyun-wonpil-dowoon just working their ass off trying to keep the name alive before enlisting/while in the military and they SOMEHOW made it work and made their name stronger while in the military? like that was CRAZY but somehow they did and now after 4 fucking years and the scare that they might not comeback or they would have a difficult return and see them rushing to make a show together and finally singing fucking zombie because they promised each other the first time would be together (and younghyun saying NO I WONT SING THIS SONG CHOSE ANOTHER ONE to every damn radio guest) to finally.... finally a fucking comeback WITH promotions after 4 fucking years after sungjin being so open about how he was afraid he couldn't even sing in the show and he had recorded every single track days prior !!!! like damn.................... they are back..................... and everyone is excited to see them back........................... and it is finally happening............... with them completely health and excited to the new chapter of their life....................... crazy................... i dont know if you can tell but like i kinda of love them

My kpop trash bin life journey

I am not lying to anyone, there was a big period of my life where I was deep into kpop. I would even call it unhealthy, but I want to share it. Though, in all honesty I hope no one was like me.

My journey started all the way back to 2011, my very first kpop group was big bang. My mother was actually the one who introduced it to me saying that I should listen to kpop. I think she just wanted to talk about it with someone though… Anyway, the first kpop song for me was Haru Haru by Big Bang. That pineapple lives in my memory very vividly to this day.

Since my first song was from Big Bang you would think they would be my first group, right? Wrong, I was so over my head for Girl’s Day, Apink, Girl’s Generation, and Cnblue. It became around this time that I started to get more interested in Korean variety shows as well as the culture in general. I started watching shows like Running Man, Infinity Challenge, We Got Married, and so on. I would say I was pretty healthy during this time too; I didn’t obsess over any of these idols either. I’m pretty sure I followed other groups I can’t remember right now too.

Another 2 years go by and now it’s 2013, my mom discovers BTS, she falls in love, but so do I. I find them to be pretty interesting. Still, I prefer the groups I had previously mentioned a little bit more. I started to become interested in Exo and I rekindled that Big Bang flame too. Then flash forward to 2015, the start of my madness.

In 2015, I would fall in love with Seventeen, Twice, and the SM Rookies (NCT before they became NCT). This was when I learned more about fan culture among the kpop community. Before this year, I never thought I would want to order any albums because it just wasn’t a thing back then for people living overseas. What I mean by that, was how it wasn’t as easily accessible as it is now. Despite wanting albums, I was doing alright, or so I thought.

2016 came rolling in and I felt the need to support every group I followed, and I will list them all out for you below:

I’m not lying I felt like I needed to support everyone, and I did very successfully just that. I wrote down when each of their comebacks would come out, I followed their socials and so on. If there was anything any of these idols had been you bet, I was going to be watching them. Now, if you’re wondering about my life, don’t worry. At this point I was in school, and I never slacked when it came to grades. So, no one in my family said anything.

I lived this life all the way up till 2018, which is not healthy. I love kpop, but by the middle of 2017 I felt like I needed to support them. BTW I had added more groups to this list as well. Going back to the feeling of needing to support them, it was unhealthy. I was obsessed, I was a dumpster of kpop and nothing more. I didn't think that way though. I was like, I’m so happy I know so much about kpop. I know everything that’s going on at the moment in the kpop world.

Of course, my health wasn’t that way. I spent several hours watching kpop, even if there weren’t any subtitles. I even bought products they endorsed. I even went to kcon which wasn’t all that exciting as I expected it to be. The only thing I don’t regret was the concerts. I felt that if I didn’t support them in this way, I didn’t have the worthiness to call myself a fan. Which is not true in any way. Now what was so wrong with this life? Well, I didn’t pay attention to myself. I realized my whole personality and life was centered around kpop and not who I was as a person. Let that sink in for a moment.

I had to take one good look in the mirror and see who I was. I was someone who knew more about kpop than their own self. Now, I’m not blaming kpop, I have only myself to blame. I should have paid more attention to myself. I know that now and I don’t get carried away like I used to. Now, I dress up, go out and I know who I am. It took me two years of limiting my kpop intake. Man, I sound like I had an addiction.

So where am I now?

I watch kpop, but I’m nowhere near as invested as I was back then. I still have my groups like Astro, Twice, and SF9, but I’m satisfied. I don’t feel the need to watch everything they do, nor do I feel the need to do anything I was like before. I think those three groups are the only ones I constantly check up on.

What I’m trying to say is don’t make the same mistake I did. Don’t feel like you need to watch everything your fave is in. Also, I used to be one of those people who wouldn’t listen to mainstream pop because I was like “ew gross” which is totally not true. I see some people like that these days and I think you need to understand everyone has their own music tastes.

In the end, you don’t breathe and live for your idol. Don’t spend hours upon hours watching content on kpop. Take a look at yourself and see who you know more about, a kpop idol or yourself. If kpop is the one thing that makes you happy, please find something else. I trust you that it’s going to make your life a lot better.
