This Pine Box - The Way Out ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ @thispinebox @soulsteprecords ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ There must be something in the water in Dayton, Ohio. Some of my favorite bands hail from Dayton (think @thebreeders and @instagbv) and now I’m hearing even more great music from the area thanks to Melvin at Soul Step Records, who has hooked me up with several of their latest featured releases. Tonight I’m soaking in the 70s rock tinged sounds of This Pine Box’s album “The Way Out” and when I say 70s rock I don’t mean Captain Beyond, I mean some old school American style rock you’d crack open some cold ones to at a backyard party somewhere in the Midwest. This is feel good, kick-back rock music that sounds like they could have opened for Springsteen back in the day, but it isn’t kitschy or campy one bit. The album itself is a really fun one to listen to straight through and the sequencing of the tracks walk you through a story that makes you want to roll the windows down and drive around on country roads. One of the things I really love about this album are songs like “The Leaves” that play with big dynamic ranges and really let the band flex their soft and their anthemic sides. I don’t live anywhere near Ohio, but if I did, I’d certainly make an effort to see them live because I can only imagine the energy they bring to a live set. The guitars are bold and fearless and aren’t afraid of a little tasteful solo here and there, the rhythm section is absolutely on point throughout the whole affair and the vocals are big and unapologetic, just like dyed in the wool rock should be. This band has been making waves of their own after being named “Artist of the Month” by radio station WNKU and they’ve also recently shared the stage with the Flaming Lips at Bellweather Fest!
