That focused commitment to high achievement has characterised their daughter’s approach to life, going all the way back to pre-school, say parents Merrick and Diana Sutherland.

“My daughter always wants to be the best,” said Merrick Sutherland, who travels to Washington State in the far north-west of the United States seasonally, for close to six months every year, to work on a farm there. “She goes to the extreme for whatever she wants and is a demanding person when it comes to school. If she needs $5,000 tomorrow morning to do with anything with her schoolwork you have to come up with that $5,000, because without that she says she is being set back,” he added.

Deandre’s mother, Diana, a manager at St Elizabeth Municipal Corporation, believes her daughter is just about the most dedicated person she has ever come across.

“Ever since Deandre has been growing up, she has been a one of a kind child. I don’t have to tell Deandre ‘go and take up your book’… It’s more like I have to be saying ‘give the book a break’. It’s like she was born with an innate dedication to (education). I have never seen it (to that extent) in anybody else, to be honest. She constantly surprises us as parents and she always surpasses our expectations,” said Diana Sutherland.

Acting principal at Hampton, Roseann Lounges is similarly impressed by Deandre’s work ethic. “She is our pride and joy,” said Lounges.

The educator emphasised that Deandre excels not only as a scholar — a top performer since first form — but as a student leader and social activist on campus as well as in her community, Appleton, northern St Elizabeth, where she runs Sunday School and is involved in youth programmes.

“I remember when it was announced that she was Head Girl, all the girls were so excited,” said Lounges. “She is popular not just for being a bright girl, but she is popular with the students because she actually goes the extra mile with them. She helps with their assignments; she is a mentor to them. She is the sort of Head Girl who doesn’t have to be brash or coarse … the girls just follow her lead,” Lounges said.

Top Jamaican academician Dr Dennis Minott, whose A-QuEST organisation guides high-achieving scholars such as Deandre towards entering leading universities, described her as exceptional. He noted that in response to his recommendation, Deandre entered an online Harvard University course ‘Entrepreneurship in Emerging Economies’ and scored a 100 per cent grade.

“When a child at 18 takes on a full Harvard course which is not even part of her regular field of study and aces it, then you have to take notice,” said Minott. “She is very bright, far brighter than even Hampton realises,” he added.

Not satisfied with that, Deandre — again in line with Minott’s advice — has begun two other university online courses, dealing with global poverty and nuclear energy.

She freely agreed with suggestions that she enjoys studying and gaining knowledge.

“I am passionate about learning and education,” she said.

That passion drove her to gain distinctions in all the 13 subjects she sat at the CSEC level in 2016: Mathematics, Additional Mathematics, English Language, Social Studies, Principles of Business, Principles of Accounts, Economics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Human and Social Biology, Information Technology and Spanish.

Similarly, in her first year of Sixth Form she gathered distinctions at the CAPE Unit 1 level in Pure Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Economics and also Communications Studies. The latter is a one-year course.

Now in Upper Sixth, Deandre is doing level two work in the CAPE subjects. She has replaced Communications Studies with Spanish Unit 1.

Since her home is more than 20 miles from Hampton in Malvern, Deandre spends three hours or more each day travelling by bus to and from school. She concedes its tiring but says she has learnt to cope.

“After doing it for six years, it doesn’t really bother me anymore … I am now accustomed to it,” she said.

Roseann Lounges

That amount of travel and the need to study at nights inevitably cuts back on sleep. On average, Deandre says she sleeps six hours each night on weekdays, sometimes less. But again, she is unperturbed.

“I do realise that sleep is important so I try to sleep as much as possible, but there are times when I really don’t have a choice. To meet all the deadlines you have to sacrifice some sleeping time, sometimes,” she said.

And while she keeps it “flexible”, Deandre says she maintains a schedule which allows her to keep up with schoolwork and online studies, as well as duties as Head Girl at Hampton.

Her days are packed, since she has only an hour after classes each day to deal with extra-curricular activities before her bus departs Hampton.

“Throughout the day I try my best to do as much as I can,” she said. As a “role model to a lot of girls”, Deandre says she tries to motivate them and help with assignments. A big plus for her is that “I find that through tutoring others, it concretises the knowledge I have”.

Crucially though, she finds it satisfying just to help others.

“If it’s service, I am there 100 per cent,” she said.

Such dedication has earned her the 2017 Joan Linton Award, which recognises the student contributing most to life at Hampton.

In seeking to motivate others Deandre, who is peer counsel president, has found that simple conversation is a big help.

“I use my words; words are powerful… I do my utmost best to advise these ladies as much as possible,” she said. When she finds herself unable to help, she tries to find other people who may be able to provide the required counselling, she said.

She considers low self-esteem to be among the biggest problems affecting teenagers. “Persons not having confidence … that’s something I find I have to work on the most,” she said. “I try to let them know that they can shatter the glass ceiling,” she said.

A devout Christian who says the last thing she does at nights before going to sleep is to read her Bible, Deandre also encourages others to have faith in God even as they study and gain knowledge of the world around them.

“My advice to younger persons: do online college courses, explore, interact with others in the world, build yourself, build closer bonds, and in everything you do, put God first,” she said. Recalling her CSEC additional mathematics exam when she actually thought she had done badly, Deandre said, “It’s not always easy, you face struggles and sometimes it seems impossible.”

She had left the exam with “blurred vision” because of tears, and felt depressed. But she pulled herself together, regained focus and when the exam results came — all distinctions, including that for which she thought she had faltered. Her response was “thank you Jesus”.

According to Deandre “sometimes we will feel like we are stuck and there is no way out, but continue to do what you are doing. Do your part and God will do the rest”.

With just a year left in high school, she is gazing at pathways towards a career in actuarial science or as a software engineer. She has done extensive research on universities that may best facilitate her ambitions.

“I am hoping to go to a university of my choice, perhaps Harvard, Toronto, Princeton, University of Miami, perhaps Howard University,” she said.

It does seem a safe bet that wherever she ends up, Deandre Sutherland will have a full scholarship and shining prospects.
