Land of the Giants

Sting of Death (1966)
"Horrible. That man died a violent death, I can't understand it."
"You could understand it, Doctor, if you'd just listen to me!"
"We have listened to you, now, uh, let's not go into all that."
#sting of death#william grefé#1966#horror film#creature feature#american cinema#william kerwin#joe morrison#valerie hawkins#john vella#jack nagle#sandy lee kane#deanna lund#lois etelman#blanche devereaux#doug hobart#judy lee#robert stanton#al jacobs#lon e. norman#my first taste of Bill Grefé‚ Florida's answer to Steven Spielberg (y'know‚ if Spielberg had just made monster movies on miniscule budgets)#this is a deep dive regional indie schlocker of the silliest kind; truthfully it's pretty bad filmmaking‚ but not un fun#it is at least gaudy and colourful (and exists in a visibly better quality than many of Grefé's other films; this may have been my first#taste‚ but I've watched several more between viewing and writing these tags). the plot is pure nonsense about a jellyfish man or a#man jellyfish (science run amuck etc etc). it's all quite confusing but there's small joys to be found in our jelly headed villain padding#around quietly just a couple of yards from a pool party of oblivious teens who SOMEHOW just don't notice him; or how Prof Father Figure has#a highly visible scab on his forehead‚ the shape and size of which varies from scene to scene and can be used to work out the order#that the film was made in. oh and there's a Neil Sedaka jellyfish themed pop song! which gets hyped up a lot! and gratuitous scenes#of dancing bikini girls whooping and laughing (again‚ as a jellyfish man lurks within arm's length). sup professional acting‚ woeful fx and#a general lack of anything approaching a cinematic vision.. but it's kind of fun in a very very very dumb way

“Jerry was just lovely to work with. But to be honest it was a little confusing.  Because he wore so many hats on Hardly Working—actor, director and co-writer—it was hard for me to get my character in tune with the right person.  First you’re listening to Jerry the intellectual analyzing the scene and speaking with the cameraman and the rest of the crew.  And then all of a sudden he’s this lunatic.  It was quite an experience.  I think it is very difficult for an actor to direct himself.  I know it’s done all the time and sometimes extremely successfully but it’s hard.  Jerry’s health also wasn’t very good at the time.”
