Repost from @bnplit using @RepostRegramApp - Note to self: grab and buy as many books about photography and film written and or edited by women, especially Black women! I • • I picked up this gem of book while helping a family friend move: It’s a good read of essays exploring your identity that comes along with finding yourself, finding black people in the photographs while being edited by the legendary @debwillisphoto . It made me go and find a copy of the oldest, best preserved photo in my family’s possession: A black-and-white photo of my grandparents on their wedding day. (A sad reminder that so much of our history is lost to time) • • • From early Daguerreotypes of slaves to mugshots to photos of activists and leaders to snapshots of Black folks dressed to the nines in mink stepping out of cars, I really enjoyed reading this book (published in 1994!!!) and welcome it to my personal library! Happy black history month! #deborahwillis #photography #bnplit #africananericans #representationmatters #portraits https://www.instagram.com/p/BuJ2ITllgj5/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1888s8ot02i2u

Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe // photographer historian activist // Moutoussamy-Ashe grew up in Chicago and began taking weekend classes at the Art Institute of Chicago as a young child. At age 15, she picked up her first camera. She studied at the Cooper Union and during her junior year traveled to West Africa. In Ghana, she photographed fishing communities and grew interested in the connections between West African traditions and the African diaspora. From 1977 to 1981, she documented the Gullah/Geechee people of Daufuskie Island, recording their lives and homes as they faced encroachment and erasure by developers. Descendants of enslaved West Africans, the Gullah people are speakers of perhaps the only distinctly African creole language native to the US and deeply influential in the development of Southern vocabulary and speech patterns. The Daufuskie Island collection was donated to National Museum of African American History and Culture in 2014. ... Moutoussamy-Ashe's artistic practice fostered her interest in the history of black women photographers. Together with Deborah Willis (artist and Chair of the Department of Photography at the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU), Moutoussamy-Ashe began searching for documentation of these artists, using phonebooks as her finding aids. Until the 1950s, black businesses listed in phonebooks would be identified with "C"; this marker of segregation became a clue for Moutoussamy-Ashe to follow. In 1986, she published "Viewfinders: Black Women Photographers," featuring black women artists dating back to 1866. One of the first studies of its kind, "Viewfinders" and the ongoing work of Dr. Willis inspired subsequent generations, including Laylah Amatullah Barrayn and Adama Delphine Fawundu, creators of "MFON: Women Photographers of the African Diaspora," the first publication in an annual series. // #blackhistoryisamericanhistory ... #jeannemoutoussamy-ashe #deborahwillis #mfon #blackphotographers #womenphotographers #gullah #daufuskieisland #documentingthediaspora ... 📸: Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe, by Fern Logan; "Daufuskie Island: Susie Standing Next to Holy Picture," "Daufuskie Island: Cousins," “Hard Hats,” all Jeanne Moutoussam https://www.instagram.com/p/Btk7NPdBUov/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=6sjexnituf9x

28 days of Blackness Augustus Washington was an African American photographer and daguerreotypist born in 1820 Trenton New Jersey. Washington's father was an ex live and his mother was of Asian background. Washington was well-educated and studied " to elevate the social and political position of the oppressed and unfortunate people with whom I am identified". Augustus had a brief career as a teacher in Brooklyn until he moved to Hartford Connecticut in 1843 and open a daguerreotype studio to finance his education. By 1850 Washington was operating three Studios and was successfully attracting new clients. Washington reflected his political interest through his photography by taking portraits of local abolitionists. Tired with the inequality in America Washington went to Liberia in early 1853 where he became a school teacher, Farmer, Store proprietor and daguerreotypist. For Black History Month I will be honoring Black photographers who are usually left out the major narrative Daniel Freeman (1868-1919?) Born in Alexandria, Virginia and active in Washington DC from 1881 to 1919. He studied photography with photographer E. J. Pullman and studied painting and drawings at Augustus Washington art school. Freeman is described as a natural born artists and opened his first studio in DC in 1885 claiming to be the first black photographer of the city. Freeman was founder of the Washington Amateur Art Society. Freeman use his portraits as a way to elevate black people but also used it as a way to make allegorical statements.
