Ms. Tyson graciously left us with her memoir, Just As I Am. 📖 I loved this book! I honestly didn’t know much about her, but I loved her work and how she represented black women. All I can say is just read the book. I was stunned at some events, and amazed at her rise to fame. I was absolutely looking forward to her view of her relationship and marriage to Miles Davis. I listened to Miles’s autobiography some time ago, so it was reallllyyy interesting listening to Ms. Cicely’s point of view versus his. What they said about each other... All I can say, as I smh lol, is she loved him. Although I think this book is amazing, I am left with several questions and wanting to know more. Despite my questions, I am very, very grateful she left us with this book, this glimpse into her beautiful life. I have developed a deeper appreciation and affinity for her. She is my shero. I finished up Girl, Gurl, Grrrl: On Womanhood and Belonging in the Age of Black Girl Magic by Kenya Hunt. I enjoyed this one, as Kenya is from the same state as me, so it was nice to read her perspective and to see we shared some of the same experiences. My favorite essay is Bad Bitches - It’s perfectly fine to be an okay bish, y’all lol. I also enjoyed the essays of special guests, like Candice Canty-Williams, the author of Queenie. Remember this book? My former coworkers and I had formed a (short lived) bookclub years ago and read this book. It was good! Definitely a reread type of book. Quick rundown: Perfect Peace is about a mom who wanted a girl so bad, she had everyone believe her last child, Perfect, was a girl.
