#TBT to a few weeks ago when I competed in what I hope is the first of many #DonnaPurkeyClassic bonspiels. @CoyotesCurling was the first time I ever experienced dedicated ice and it was nice to be able to continue the tradition by bringing a mostly newbie @curlsandiego team to the competition. I thought I gave a thorough enough briefing and set realistic expectations as skip & most experienced member of the squad, but there were still some surprises like order during the opening ceremonies, the talent show, & posing for pictures. Lots to build on moving forward. Extremely grateful to the Divas who took the time to coach us - it helped immensely and we almost pulled off the comeback in game 4. Loved how they had commemorative patches too. I definitely want to make it an annual thing and collect patches. . . Speaking of the talent show, the only other team signed up for it bailed so it basically turned into @curlsandiego serving as dinner entertainment while the professional musician takes a break at the bar. I’m glad folks enjoyed the informative “book report presentation” that Misty & Stephanie helped with (I made the board in my hotel room) & enough curlers got the humor of the song parody I performed despite the original song being Taylor Swift’s Blank Space. I’m a big #swiftie & the biggest @teamniklasedin fan so I just leaned on that fully. LOL one of the tables made the comment “I sense a theme here” midway through the presentation & there were lots of chuckles as inside jokes and curling memes were uttered during the song (Malört, YouTube chats, lack of ice access in arena clubs, & Glenn Howard never retiring, etc). FINALLY got to wear my new @teamhasselborg uniform from @runbackcurling to @curlsandiego My women’s team is competing at the Donna Purkey Classic in Arizona next weekend so we did the pickup game against a mixed team w/ 2 male sweepers for practice during the Learn To Curl. I really wanted Elaine to learn how to be the #skip but she didn’t feel comfortable throwing last rocks so she threw third & made one of the guys throw last rocks. #FBF to last weekend when my team won league 💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻 Happy that this time it’s official official - Andrew & I firmly believe we technically won last season by default due to attendance (games should’ve been Ws for us due to automatic forfeits by opponents for not having enough players on their team). I really hope this is me turning a new leaf both as a skip & a curler in general. The winning shot was a draw through the port to the 4ft that Owen was unable to beat. I was the only female skip this league so it means a lot to come out on top. Sadly, Curl SD moved away from handing out league trophies a couple of years ago. Maybe one day the hardware will be back & I’ll continue to win 😉 It really helped a lot that Josh was there as a sub - having 2 sweepers makes a big difference in league games, even more so when you have 2 strong men sweeper, which has me hopeful for tomorrow’s Reindeer Games since my 3 teammates are men. It’s not a goodbye, but a so long until we meet again. Earlier today I attended what I’ve been referring to as the SCCC’s last hurrah as they are being evicted out of their current location. For several months I got to experience dedicated ice in SoCal and look forward to when we will have it back again. I ultimately hope CurlSD will have our own facility during my lifetime. Been watching a lot of Kdramas lately & this selfie I took before I left reminded me of a scene from Her Private Life where the two main characters get stranded due to weather and end up spending the night at the house of the keeper of a photographer’s last unpublished work. They discuss how the last published photo was called Annyeong which means both hello and goodbye in Korean. Competing at the #TacoSpiel2022 this weekend w/ Rob, Misty, Bob, and Andrew. So far we’re up to our usual antics of struggling to get rid of hammer & getting creamed, but it’s been a good learning experience so far - we actually have to do the #LastShotDraw at the end of each game so I’m likely throwing the draw tonight since Andrew and Misty already did it. Also, because the number of teams they’re actually doing pools & we get to play tomorrow for sure. . . In anticipation of the upcoming kickoff to the #curling season for several of the elite teams in Europe in a few days (Baden Masters), I got some #Swiss items to add to my curling closet. I basically only had the #TeamTirinzoni signed jersey from the European Championships and we all know I’m not wearing that because 1) it’s signed and 2) I’d have to be dead several weeks before I’m skinny enough to wear something of Silvana Tirinzoni’s size 😂 Got a #Switzerland jacket and a Swiss bag to support the Swiss teams instead. The bag is the same style as the Sweden and Germany bags I already have. I hope they have other countries so I can keep adding to my curling closet. Next week is the last week of Curl SD’s scuffed league & we FINALLY have a #GOATNIKLASEDIN team pic together. It’s the same team I had for the 5U bobspiel - Misty, Bob, & Andrew, & we have a new curler with us - Stephanie. Normally Misty & Bob alternate on who shows up due to child care coverage, but last night they were both available so Bob actually played on Clyde’s team. . . I wanted to be all decked out in #TeamGermany gear to wish Team Kapp good luck at World Juniors so against my better judgment, I wore my #Germany pants & it was a disaster 😂😭 My pants kept on falling off!!! I’m not saying it’s solely responsible for our can’t get rid of hammer situation the first half, but it didn’t help. I finally took them off, put on my usual Hardline pants, scored 4, then stole 3. I don’t think I have ever scored a 3 or a 4 against Clyde ever! And he had a team of more experienced men than my team which had 2 women. Andrew, Bob, Misty & I all started league on 2/3/19 (my mom’s bday) & Stephanie is fresh out of Learn To Curl vs Clyde, Rob, & Mark who are past 5U eligibility, so not bad despite the loss. During broomstacking Rob gave me props for being able to throw peel to score the 4. Yea I’m capable of greatness now, I just need more practice & consistency. Dear body please hang in there! I’m refusing to go away. I’m going to continue making men’s jaws drop during league & I can’t wait for the day when I consistently win games. I don’t think I’ll ever get the level of respect men do especially from Learn To Curl students because there’s always an underlying bias (because I’m a fat Pinay) but winning more would certainly make me feel better. I don’t think I have enough characters left in my IG captions to write out all the stereotypes and memes about this pic 🤣 We finally got somewhat of a team pic together (we didn’t do it last week). Once again we still haven’t bought drinks, but we’re clearly capable or hanging in there the first half - we were 2-2 after the half vs a team (family) that plays 2 league games a week for 10 years so to hang in there was awesome. I wish I had video of an awesome Plan B shot I nailed to score 1 in the 4th end. I don’t even know what to call the shot because it hit one of the corners rolled across the house, hit another one and then rolled shot buried behind a wall of red (we were yellow). We will keep working on improving. 👊💪 . . I still want to lose another 20-30 lbs of pandemic weight and I’m hoping I still have this sweeping power after I lose more weight - it’s technique and not just weight 👊💪 But I’m also hoping my sweepers will continue to improve their sweeping technique because skipper has a shoulder MRI coming… and physical therapy on the horizon again. I was the only female skip last league so I was absolutely STOKED to see that out of the 10 teams playing this Thursday league, 3 have female skips AND WE’RE ALL ASIAN!!! LFG!!! I’m trying not to think too much about the fact that I now have a Caucasian man in my previously all Asian women team (we can’t do anything about Tamayo’s trip to Japan). Andrew and I work really well together & he’s my normal third stone thrower at SD so I’m glad I was able to call dibs on him. We started out great - up 4-0 at halftime before we let the other team back in and imploded. 8 weeks left, plenty of improvement and games left to win… though losing means free drinks because OC takes broomstacking way seriously. We even got Andrew to stay! . . Wore my @teamhasselborg uniform in honor of Agnes & Anna’s birthday. One of the newbies asked me if I was Swedish because I’m wearing a jersey w/ @vattenfall on it. Totally #lategram but now it’s FB official - Fireballers won the Golden Plunger in OC Curling’s Thursday Spring League. I have 9 weeks to decide on a design & execute the addition accordingly… unless we win it against next league, which I don’t think will happen since I most likely will have Andrew on my team (Tamayo is going back to Japan for a few weeks and won’t be playing Summer League). He’s beaten me for 3rd place in SD league before so hopefully that means winning combo in Irvine besides just ending up on TPTB’s 💩 list… I’m hoping to throw yellow stones next league for #personalreasons LOL Andrew’s gonna want to always lose the coin flip… he has his superstitions, I have mine. UGH the recent weight loss of course went after the hardest body part for me to develop and the first to disappear whenever I lose weight - my butt.
