#TBT to a few weeks ago when I competed in what I hope is the first of many #DonnaPurkeyClassic bonspiels. @CoyotesCurling was the first time I ever experienced dedicated ice and it was nice to be able to continue the tradition by bringing a mostly newbie @curlsandiego team to the competition. I thought I gave a thorough enough briefing and set realistic expectations as skip & most experienced member of the squad, but there were still some surprises like order during the opening ceremonies, the talent show, & posing for pictures. Lots to build on moving forward. Extremely grateful to the Divas who took the time to coach us - it helped immensely and we almost pulled off the comeback in game 4. Loved how they had commemorative patches too. I definitely want to make it an annual thing and collect patches. . . Speaking of the talent show, the only other team signed up for it bailed so it basically turned into @curlsandiego serving as dinner entertainment while the professional musician takes a break at the bar. I’m glad folks enjoyed the informative “book report presentation” that Misty & Stephanie helped with (I made the board in my hotel room) & enough curlers got the humor of the song parody I performed despite the original song being Taylor Swift’s Blank Space. I’m a big #swiftie & the biggest @teamniklasedin fan so I just leaned on that fully. LOL one of the tables made the comment “I sense a theme here” midway through the presentation & there were lots of chuckles as inside jokes and curling memes were uttered during the song (Malört, YouTube chats, lack of ice access in arena clubs, & Glenn Howard never retiring, etc). FINALLY got to wear my new @teamhasselborg uniform from @runbackcurling to @curlsandiego My women’s team is competing at the Donna Purkey Classic in Arizona next weekend so we did the pickup game against a mixed team w/ 2 male sweepers for practice during the Learn To Curl. I really wanted Elaine to learn how to be the #skip but she didn’t feel comfortable throwing last rocks so she threw third & made one of the guys throw last rocks. #PimpSanta and one of his reindeer 🎅 Congrats to Austin for winning Best Costume at #ReindeerGames this weekend. I still don’t know how he curled 10 ends in that outfit. I wore a long sleeve top under my #doecostume & was so cold I had to wear my @curlsandiego jacket. Thank you Andrew, Ian, and Geoff for being on my team for Reindeer Games. Ian is such a homie not only for wearing an ugly holiday sweater but for letting me put deer makeup on him 👍 We had a rough first half but came back super strong in the second half. #FBF to last weekend when my team won league 💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻 Happy that this time it’s official official - Andrew & I firmly believe we technically won last season by default due to attendance (games should’ve been Ws for us due to automatic forfeits by opponents for not having enough players on their team). I really hope this is me turning a new leaf both as a skip & a curler in general. The winning shot was a draw through the port to the 4ft that Owen was unable to beat. I was the only female skip this league so it means a lot to come out on top. Sadly, Curl SD moved away from handing out league trophies a couple of years ago. Maybe one day the hardware will be back & I’ll continue to win 😉 It really helped a lot that Josh was there as a sub - having 2 sweepers makes a big difference in league games, even more so when you have 2 strong men sweeper, which has me hopeful for tomorrow’s Reindeer Games since my 3 teammates are men. Wore my @teamniklasedin tour uniform to @curlsandiego league & watched the last end at the beginning of the game. I may have jumped up & down when my Icevengers YOINKED the win to get to the final. It was nice to see 🐐 @niklasedin make an appearance - it was cute how he was shown peeking through the curtain & commentators said something like they should hook him up w/ a SportsNet subscription. I’m heartbroken that he’s injured, but glad he was shown smiling throughout the last couple of ends even though he had crutches with him 😭 Please stop living up to your #Bionik nickname - no more injuries & surgeries please 🙏🤞 . . It’s not a goodbye, but a so long until we meet again. Earlier today I attended what I’ve been referring to as the SCCC’s last hurrah as they are being evicted out of their current location. For several months I got to experience dedicated ice in SoCal and look forward to when we will have it back again. I ultimately hope CurlSD will have our own facility during my lifetime. Been watching a lot of Kdramas lately & this selfie I took before I left reminded me of a scene from Her Private Life where the two main characters get stranded due to weather and end up spending the night at the house of the keeper of a photographer’s last unpublished work. They discuss how the last published photo was called Annyeong which means both hello and goodbye in Korean. Last night at @curlsandiego curling league I got to channel my inner @evemuirhead of @team_muirhead Not only did I wear my @bawbagsunderwear I’m also wearing my #ContCup2019 jersey. It was neat to see #EveMuirhead be the hero of Vegas, clinching the win for Team World especially after hip surgery. I knew I had to get #Bawbags underwear after seeing #TeamMuirhead post about it and finding out they support the fight against #cancer Not gonna lie, I had to put on my @teamniklasedin @dynastycurling hoodie on after this pic was taken though. It’s cold and my Team Edin hoodie has been my Saturday uniform since I got it. I wish I could order the new Team Edin hoodies, but it seems they’ll never be sold. . . I also got to channel my inner @saramcmanus vice of @teamhasselborg last night. It was my first time playing vice for the entire game and we won! Michael, the youngest member of the club and a chatty old soul, started noticing and commenting that if I scream or yelp while delivering a rock, it’s gonna be a good shot and was making calls like a TSN/Sportsnet commentator 😂 The funny thing was, he was actually mostly right especially towards the later ends. The ice was kinda wonky and kept falling a certain way so it was mostly luck that I was managing to pull off the good shots I was making, but I’ll take it. I look forward to the day when I can consistently do takeouts, those are fun when I nail them. One day I hope to actually have a draw game too haha. I suck at drawing and totally better at making granite fly. . . This is my third time playing league this year (I participated in both winter and spring leagues), and the 3rd team I’ve found myself in, and the second one where I’m in a trio w/ a married couple. I was extremely happy when I got to the rink and saw two of the students Clyde and I had at the first #learntocurl session in August back for league 💃🏻🕺 I was even happier when I found out we were all playing together. We’re gonna figure this out together and I’m so excited for the rest of Fall League A. . . We don’t do team names in @curlsandiego but if we did, I’d probably suggest Team #TWD 😂 Drew reminds me a lot of Steven Yeun and his wife Erin, who’s my vice who throws last stones, has serious Maggie season 2 hair. And we all know I’m a Carol cosplayer so 😬 . . A funny thing happened before the game started. The youngest member of our club who just started 9th grade asked me if I was sponsored because he’s seen me for months wearing @teamniklasedin clothes from @dynastycurling and using the #TeamEdin broom & fancy shoes from @hardlinecurling 😂😂😂 It reminded me of when a man asked me at the Continental Cup in Vegas how much @niklasedin pays me to promote them so much. Puhahahaha it’s called I spend money to represent & support my faves, they don’t pay me a kronor. I originally signed up for drop-in #curling w/ the #OCCurlingClub because I haven’t thrown or swept rocks since the beginning of May. When I got there, I was asked if I wanted to sub for a team w/ 2.5 players. How does a team have 2.5 players?!? Well, Alan had surgery recently and still a couple weeks away from medical clearance to sweep. It’s funny how comfortable I’ve grown 3rd wheeling for Mabby during winter league even though it was only 6 weeks long. It was definitely weird to jump in to an existing team w/ their own dynamics. These guys time every shot - both their own and their opponents; Mabby and I, since we all started league in February, mostly winged things. If we stay together for Fall leagues, there’s lots of things we can work on to get better for sure. This experience made me appreciate even more how Jim Cotter and Eve Muirhead were able to jump in as super spares for Team Edin and Team Hasselborg at GSOC when Oskar & Anna were competing at Worlds for mixed doubles. It’s hard to be a sub. Thank you Austin, Bob, and Alan for a great game. I’m sorry we didn’t pull off the win since it was the playoffs (it was a tie and came down to a draw challenge between the skips and we narrowly lost). My favorite moment might be Bob & Austin arguing about whether or not to sweep a rock in motion and being utterly confused - JUST TELL ME WHAT TO DO! Thanks to the #OrangeCounty #curlingclub for being so welcoming this past weekend. My whole body still hurts from subbing—I’ve never played 2 games back to back before and I’m relieved I survived it on top of the 3 hour drive roundtrip. Hooray for the Costco chocolate covered protein bar I had in my bag for helping me get through the second game. I’m so glad Maureen (who usually plays lead too) played vice since I’m much more comfortable as lead 😬 Thanks Nick for the delivery tips afterward. I hope to get my slide in better form and more consistent as time goes on. Swipe for an #injury #update I was tempted to post the photo of my hand in front of my usual #salad for #dinner by itself, but figured I’d spare some of you just in case. What I really wanted was some InNOut but I managed to resist since I know I’ll be stuffing my face w/ lots of GOT Oreos soon whew. Glad I brought my Team USA gloves to the rink today because I needed the protection for my hand both for throwing rocks and especially for sweeping. Definitely some discomfort after the game and by the time I got home an hour later I NEEDED to ice and take ibuprofen. The ice just kept pulling on one side no matter how far off to the other side we aimed and there were wonky spots - the rock would be really fast and then just slow down/stop abruptly in one section, and there was one area right before the house where there was no curl at all. There were 6 stones in a row that went field goal straight in one end. One of my 3 rocks during the 6th end went kinda airborne somehow 😂 And I had a small IDK what to even call it, not quite a stumble or fall since I was already on my knee, maybe balance check(?) to borrow a term from gymnastics, when I threw one of my rocks (also in the 6th end), but luckily nothing seriousMy vice basically voluntold me to update the scoreboard today since I’m still trying to get used to our efficient system. Both of my knees and my thighs are sufficiently covered w/ Katinko. I hope I can get out of bed okay in the morning lol I’m still getting used to the dance, swim, and curling within 24 hours routine.
