Dawn de Barcsy, former “World’s Only Bearded Snake Charmer,” married into the carny life forty years ago. For the last ten years, after the death of her husband, Dawn has dealt with the typical hiccups as owner and operator of a traveling show: accidents on the job, car trouble on the road, lost luggage and supplies, heavy rainfall, extreme heat, leaving a town in the red, crooked cops, permit denials, refused entry at state borders, angry mobs, murder, death… the usual. But the show must go on!

Shilzie and her sisters, Elvi and Nylee, were adopted ten years ago by Dawn de Barcsy just after the death of her husband, Tod. They have been raised with nothing but love by their brother and mother, touring the States as "The Aztec Daughters of Xipe Totec." Elvi and Nylee live as most children should, carefree. Shilzie however, knows what the adults around her neglect to share. Secrets and thoughts, not all of them innocent. Some are downright sinister.

Vincent de Barcsy, known to the crowd as "the Gentleman Beast of York," is the adopted son of Dawn and Tod de Barcsy, heir to Carnivàle de la Llum. He is a loving brother, son, and friend to all in the troupe he considers family. Vincent trusts in the goodness of others, sometimes to his own detriment.

Meet Billy and Morty Blair. These seventeen-year-old boys are new to the show this season. Mama was their only friend, but now that she’s gone it’s time to get to know their new family at Carnivàle de la Llum. That is, if Morty will allow it. His whispers in Billy’s ear can be quite persuasive.
