Do you like magic? Adventure? Complicated characters? TV shows that are slowly being written by an amateur writer who have dedicated more time to it than they probably should? Queer representation? Screenwriting?
In that case, hello! My name is Milo (they/he) and I am currently writing a show titled The Otherlands! Please bear with me while I try and explain it.
It's a fantasy adventure set in a world where only the people who have magic and were born with the gene for it can remember it. These people are called magicians, and they, along with other magical species, live in a small area dubbed The Otherlands, Oregon.
Season one stars:
HENRY LANDON, a seventeen year old boy who had a relatively ordinary life until his brother Beau went missing. That opened up a whole new mystery for him as he learns that, not only is magic real, but he has it.
ATLAS SONDERS, a sixteen year old ember--humanoid fire being--summoned by Henry and his friends for protection in finding Beau. Instead of wanting money or items in return, all he wants is friendship.. and a way to escape the past that is always creeping up on him.
The focus and protagonists shift as seasons go on and we delve deeper into the problem: everyone used to be able to learn magic, even if they weren't born with it. This all changed after someone used their magic to stop an attack... and ended up affecting everyone. There are two different organizations trying to fix the magic that caused the world to be the way it is now.
THE GUARD: A group of magicians dedicated to keeping The Otherlands relatively peaceful. They have a long history with the memory curse, and its mysterious captain is supposedly the one who put it up, though the world's memories of him are... strange and scattered.
THE INCENTIVE: An organization that exists simply to take the curse down and bring magic back to everyone. But they tend to go about it in violent ways, having grown impatient from all of the years of failed attempts.
But really, nobody is truly good or evil, are they? Everyone has their own secrets and problems.
People are complicated.
And that's what the Otherlands gets across, through delving into the lives and minds of different characters. That’s why the show has no real protagonist, because it shows that nobody is the hero of the story. Everyone does their part. Everyone is important to the solution in their own way.
Some other important characters, some that turn into protagonists by the later seasons:
PENN GRAVES, a seventeen year old girl who tries her best to be there for her friends while navigating her own struggles with pieces of her childhood that she really doesn't know how to feel about resurfacing.
BEAU LANDON, a nineteen year old magician who constantly tries to do what's best to help the people he cares about be okay, but doesn't know how to focus on himself and his own needs.
ACHERAN SONDERS, a nineteen year old ember with secrets kept even from herself. They care about their loved ones but, because of the situation they've been put in and the people who control them, they don't know how to feel that properly.
ALEC GRAVES, the man who put up the curse in the first place.
So if this sounds good to you, I'm thinking of posting the script for the first episode on tumblr--and if people like it, I'll keep posting them! I've written up to season 3, episode 1 (there are nine episodes in a season) and outlined the entire show, so content is promised.
Let me know if this sounds good!
