It's not summer yet, but I am kicking off this year's listening project — #SonicSummer! Does anyone still use hashtags?! I guess I do. For the next however-many weeks, I'm taking an expressway through Sonic Youth's live legacy, 1981-2011. Thirty years of pure Sonic Death! Join me! The band is impressively well-documented ... even from close to the very beginning.

Which is where we are with this Noise Fest tape! If I'm not mistaken, it captures the band's first gig under the name Sonic Youth. It's not quite Sonic Youth, however. Instead of Lee Ranaldo, we've got Ann DeMarinis on keyboards/vocals joining Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon and Richard Edson for a set both familiar and strange. A lot of the early SY pieces are in place: pummeled guitar and thudding drums, vocals both yelped and strangled.

But there are some serious curveballs to come, including one piece that flirts dangerously with ska. DeMarinis' keyboards are another odd wrinkle, but they're kind of cool! She wouldn't be long for the band, though — and even Edson was more focused on No-Wave funk practitioners KONK at the time. The White Columns crowd is pretty into this first glimpse of Sonic Youth though ... and that crowd did in fact include Lee Ranaldo, who would soon be drafted in time to record the band's first self-titled EP for Neutral, Glenn Branca's label. Speaking of which, you should check out the reissue of that EP, which features more embryonic live SY ...

Choosing the Right Youth Bat

When selecting the right Youth bat, there are a few key factors players and parents should consider. From sizing and weight to the differences between alloy and composite materials.

Generally speaking, younger players will need lighter bats. Heavier bats can be difficult to control. A good way to determine if a bat is too heavy is to have the player hold it out with their arm extended.

Barrel Length

Alloy Youth bat feature a composite handle and an aluminum barrel. They are a great option for young players to learn the swing. As the player gains strength and accuracy, they can switch to a solid wood bat for greater power.

The barrel of a bat is its thickest and widest part. Youth baseball bats with a 2 5/8" barrel are the standard for most leagues and follow Little League regulations. The three governing bodies that regulate bats (USA Baseball, BBCOR and USSSA) allow different barrel sizes, but the overall weight limit for your child's league must be met.

To determine if a bat is the proper length, have your athlete put on their cleats and stand in front of it with their feet shoulder width apart. If the end of the bat's cap touches their chest, it is a good fit. A longer bat offers greater reach, while a shorter bat allows for more control.

Weight

When selecting a Youth bat, it's also important to consider its weight. An artificially Cricket bat can cause hitters to drop their shoulders or turn their wrists, which can yield reduced swing speed and less contact with the ball. Conversely, a heavy bat can make it difficult for hitters to maintain proper swing mechanics.

The right bat weight can be determined by the player's age, league rules and personal preference. For example, a power hitter might prefer a heavier drop size to maximize batted ball velocity. Conversely, a contact hitter may prefer a lower drop size to maximize bat control and consistency. When determining the correct bat weight, it's important to remember that as players grow and develop their swings, the ideal drop size will change. This is why it's recommended that a player test out multiple bats to determine which one feels most comfortable.

Drop

Choosing the right youth bat can be tricky for new players. League rules and regulations dictate that non wood bats used by kids under the high school level must have a drop weight of no more than -3.

Depending on the league, there are other rules regarding what size of drop is allowed for middle school and high school players. If your child is in middle school or above, they should be using a BBCOR bat with a maximum drop of -3.

To help determine what size of drop your child needs, hold the bat with the knob resting against your sternum and the barrel extending down your arm. If your player can comfortably swing the bat and maintain control of it in this position for 20 seconds, then they should be able to comfortably handle a bat with a higher drop. A heavier drop will allow your player to maximize their power by putting more weight behind the ball.

Material

A Youth bat’s material is important because it affects a player’s comfort and swing. Wooden bats are great for developing a smooth, natural swing and a feel for the ball. They’re also a fantastic way to improve barrel control and bat speed while making the transition from metal.

But a wooden bat can’t match the durability and performance of its aluminum counterpart. That’s why most leagues require youth players to use aluminum bats.
