PART IV

The Dance of the Dragons has begun, and as Lady of Casterly Rock, Demelza's voice is a pivotal one. With envoys sent from both Rhaenyra and Alicent, she faces a predicament: choose between the women she has known since they were girls. An impossible choice, with impossible odds. Yet Demelza's daughters, the Dornish Diamonds, have always had wills of their own. A fateful choice ends in tragedy, and so Demelza feels the sting of grieving a child as she is forced to bury one of her beloved daughters. More than grief, she feels rage. As Demelza's fury threatens to turn the tide, her surviving daughters are left reeling. Elyana Sand, a prisoner within the walls of King's Landing, forced to play the game with her increasingly dangerous lover, Aemond Targaryen. Ceridwen Rivers, travelling to Dragonstone and kneeling before Grey Ghost to earn the mantle of the Red Rider. If there is a power stronger than a mother's love, it is a mother's grief...as Rhaenyra knows, as Demelza finds out, as Alicent will soon learn.

@nicehurt oh hey, i can actually help you with this! i just wanted to make an official post because of the character limit in replies. i haven’t been able to tuck in and read any fics yet because i’ve been in recovery for some health issues & i haven’t had the focus to do so. but i absolutely trust these writers with my life. or, at least, my time!

these violent delights is a daemon x oc fic written by @misskatiewrites and is also available on ffnet. [ you can also find the masterpost here. ] clarice is a hightower and an incredibly interesting character who feels like she could have been plucked right up from fire & blood. along with that, katie’s writing is sumptuous and so intriguing, and i couldn’t recommend it enough. gardens of misery is a multiship oc fic written by @kingsmakers and is also available on ffnet. [ you can find the fic’s tag here. ] demelza dayne is truly such a gorgeous character and so lovingly made. she strikes such a brilliant contrast to the characters she’s written against. madz has done a wonderful job with her!

Drake Carne is such a precious cinnamon roll!!

Oh Drake… sweet puppy faced,precious innocent, cinnamon roll Drake with a gentle soul and a big heart. He is sooo precious, and Geoffrey Charles and Morwenna! Morwenna is so ethereally beautiful. Kinda how I envisioned Ashara Dayne to look like. And Drake he looks so sweet with his curls and easy smile, he looks like a happy Stark if there ever was one. I need to stop comparing every period drama to Game of Thrones… Like for real.

Gods….I love all of the cast of characters even Elizabeth. I love all of Ross’ friends from the mine, and Prudie and that smuggler guy who’s a good friend of Ross’ father. I love love love Aunt Agatha. And of course Demelza is Queen and Ross is the charming rebellious flawed hero everyone loves and sometimes hate (i’m talking about that dreadful night with Elizabeth).

I hate George though. I want to slap his smug ass face every time he’s on the screen.

It was said that Lord Dayne wrote to his sister in the Westerlands, begging her to rein in her daughters and return to Dorne. At this time, Elyana Sand commanded the Lannister armies at the behest of her younger half-brother Tycho, whilst Ceridwen Rivers was known as the Red Rider with a dragon some claimed could turn invisible. Demelza vehemently refused her brother's request. They took my Rhyanon from me, she wrote back, and so I will take from them in return.

Demelza Dayne finds herself at the centre of a conflict between the two women she cares about most, her best friends Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower. In the midst of brewing turmoil, and men of the court scheming to gain her favour, Demelza finds herself playing a dangerous game of survival, both in court and home in Dorne.

Demelza had made her assumptions, when Jacaerys had first been born. She never voiced them aloud, yet now, she came dangerously close to doing so. Rhaenyra’s eyes sharpened at her words, and Demelza was certain she would have heard such insinuations about her sons’ parentage already. “I take it you’ve spoken with the Queen, then.” Her voice was cold. Demelza handed Joffrey back to his mother, troubled by the defensiveness of Rhaenyra’s tone. She had lied her way out of situations when she’d been a girl, as evidenced by her denial of pre-marital sex despite Demelza knowing the truth. Now as a woman, she lied again, protected by the blind love of a father who would not see her reputation tarnished.

“I have been thinking a match between you and my brother, Gwayne Hightower, would do very well.” Demelza paused, wrenching her arm from Alicent’s. Gwayne was the Queen’s oldest brother, who Demelza hardly remembered from their girlhood days, before Aemma had died. In any case, Otto despised Demelza. Was she truly meant to believe that the former Hand, exiled from the capital though he was, would sanction a marriage between his eldest son and a girl he condemned as a whore? “Ser Otto agreed to this?” “It is not Otto’s decision.” Alicent lifted her chin. How well she had come to suit her role, Demelza mused. The shy girl from childhood had vanished, replaced by a young woman who utilised the power she had gained. “It is mine.”

PART I

Demelza Dayne, Alicent Hightower and Rhaenyra Targaryen were said to be the closest of friends as children. However once Viserys’ first wife died, things began to change between them. All three entered in the full bloom of their beauty, Alicent becoming betrothed to Viserys and putting tension between her and Rhaenyra. Demelza, meanwhile, gained the attention of several admirers, including Criston Cole and Daemon Targaryen.

The friendship between the girls was vital for another purpose: as Demelza was from a prominent Dornish family, it was thought she may be able to bring Dorne into the fold. The youngest of five siblings, Demelza was nonetheless an attractive marriage prospect. She was accompanied at most times by her guardian and confidante, Valko Sand.

The friendship between the girls reached a breaking point after Alicent bore Viserys a son, and Demelza abruptly departed King’s Landing for Starfall. She did not write to either Alicent or Rhaenyra for a time, and it would be years before the true purpose for her exile came to light.

PART III

Over a decade has passed since Rhaenyra’s marriage to Laenor Velaryon. Now the mother of three bastard daughters, and two legitimate children with her husband Lord Jason Lannister, Demelza Dayne returns to King’s Landing at the behest of Rhaenyra, to be present for the birth of her third child.

However, the dynamics at court have shifted. Alicent also seeks Demelza’s friendship. Elyana Sand, now a teenager, engages in entanglements of her own, as well as causing mischief with her two half-sisters, Rhyanon Waters and Ceridwen Rivers. Dubbed the Dornish Diamonds, a term coined by their uncle Dornish ambassador Lindon Dayne, the presence of the three girls ruffles feathers in King’s Landing.

Demelza’s loyalties are put to the test as the cracks between Rhaenyra and Alicent continue to deepen. As Lindon’s own influence grows, both at court and in Dorne, Demelza realises a curious truth: she is no longer a pawn, but a player.

It has been three years since Viserys Targaryen and Alicent Hightower were married, and Demelza Dayne returns to court at King’s Landing. Rumours circulate about her disappearance, but she is determined to pay them no mind, seeking to reconnect with two best friends who are distant from each other as they are from her.

The emotions of teenage girls, however, are fragile things. As Demelza struggles to find her place in a court that has changed, she realises that her dynamics with Rhaenyra and Alicent have shifted. A fateful night, a terrible betrayal, a mistake born of spite and hurt feelings...as Rhaenyra’s secrets simmer beneath the surface, Demelza find that her own are about to be brought to light.

Then of course, there is Criston Cole. The man that whispers claim is the father of Demelza’s bastard daughter, Elyana Sand. A man torn in two between his duty as a Kingsguard, and his feelings for the mother of his child. His decisions to win Demelza’s favour culminate in a series of events that serve only to turn her against him and cast her into the arms of another.

For the Shining Star of Dorne sparkles all the brighter when she is motivated not by ill-placed love, but by spite.

“What are you saying?” Demelza frowned, brow contorting as the icy realisation that Lindon’s presence came with conditions for her settled over her.

“I am saying that, despite your actions and your circumstances, you may still have a bright future here.”

“Despite my actions.” Demelza smiled coldly. “You mean, in the bearing of bastard children. Do you think, Lindon, that the fathers of my daughters face such criticism? No one may say so aloud, but everyone knows who those men are.”

House Dayne in Gardens of Misery

Corrina Penrose (nee Dayne): Eldest child and heir of Darius & Allydia Dayne. Married into House Penrose and has three children at the start of the story. Shrewd and politically driven, Corrina seeks for Demelza to make herself a promising match in Westeros.

Calix Dayne: Eldest son, current Sword of the Morning. Calix is a famous warrior in Dorne, who is extremely protective of his family but also impulsive and hot-tempered.

Lindon Dayne: Youngest son, closest in age to Demelza. Middle brother between he and Calix was deceased in childhood. Lindon spends much time in the Dornish court in Sunspear. He is a smooth talker who is not afraid to do whatever it takes to elevate himself and his family.

Demelza Dayne: Youngest child of the family, known as the Shining Star of Dorne for her beauty, and considered one of the most comely women in Dorne and Westeros. Mother of the Dornish Diamonds, and married twice by the end of the Dance of the Dragons.

Bonus:

Valko Sand: Demelza’s sworn protector and captain of her guard, from when she is ward of Viserys Targaryen for over two decades. Fiercely loyal, Valko’s bastard status is sneered in Westeros, and yet he is well respected in Dorne. A fine soldier with a fondness for children and animals.

Otto’s expression was one of utter disinterest. She knew precisely why he disliked her. In his eyes, she was a wilful, disobedient girl who had shamed herself by bearing a bastard child. Perhaps in Westeros that was the case, but Demelza knew of many women in Dorne who had borne bastard children and had not been viewed as any less for it.

“You don’t have to like me, Ser Otto. My father sent me to King’s Landing to be a ward, in the hope of fostering good relations between Westeros and Dorne. That is what I have come back to do. Unless Dorne no longer matters to you?”

“Let me be plain, Lady Demelza.” Otto leaned forward. “You are an eighteen-year-old girl, a lady-in-waiting to Princess Rhaenyra and I believe, in some esteem with my daughter. You disgraced yourself by bearing the bastard daughter of a Kingsguard. You seem to hold yourself in high regard, with all of that considered.”
