Demelza Dayne in Gardens of Misery
PART IV
The Dance of the Dragons has begun, and as Lady of Casterly Rock, Demelza's voice is a pivotal one. With envoys sent from both Rhaenyra and Alicent, she faces a predicament: choose between the women she has known since they were girls. An impossible choice, with impossible odds. Yet Demelza's daughters, the Dornish Diamonds, have always had wills of their own. A fateful choice ends in tragedy, and so Demelza feels the sting of grieving a child as she is forced to bury one of her beloved daughters. More than grief, she feels rage. As Demelza's fury threatens to turn the tide, her surviving daughters are left reeling. Elyana Sand, a prisoner within the walls of King's Landing, forced to play the game with her increasingly dangerous lover, Aemond Targaryen. Ceridwen Rivers, travelling to Dragonstone and kneeling before Grey Ghost to earn the mantle of the Red Rider. If there is a power stronger than a mother's love, it is a mother's grief...as Rhaenyra knows, as Demelza finds out, as Alicent will soon learn.

Demelza Dayne in Gardens of Misery
PART III
Over a decade has passed since Rhaenyra’s marriage to Laenor Velaryon. Now the mother of three bastard daughters, and two legitimate children with her husband Lord Jason Lannister, Demelza Dayne returns to King’s Landing at the behest of Rhaenyra, to be present for the birth of her third child.
However, the dynamics at court have shifted. Alicent also seeks Demelza’s friendship. Elyana Sand, now a teenager, engages in entanglements of her own, as well as causing mischief with her two half-sisters, Rhyanon Waters and Ceridwen Rivers. Dubbed the Dornish Diamonds, a term coined by their uncle Dornish ambassador Lindon Dayne, the presence of the three girls ruffles feathers in King’s Landing.
Demelza’s loyalties are put to the test as the cracks between Rhaenyra and Alicent continue to deepen. As Lindon’s own influence grows, both at court and in Dorne, Demelza realises a curious truth: she is no longer a pawn, but a player.

Demelza Dayne in Gardens of Misery
PART II
It has been three years since Viserys Targaryen and Alicent Hightower were married, and Demelza Dayne returns to court at King’s Landing. Rumours circulate about her disappearance, but she is determined to pay them no mind, seeking to reconnect with two best friends who are distant from each other as they are from her.
The emotions of teenage girls, however, are fragile things. As Demelza struggles to find her place in a court that has changed, she realises that her dynamics with Rhaenyra and Alicent have shifted. A fateful night, a terrible betrayal, a mistake born of spite and hurt feelings...as Rhaenyra’s secrets simmer beneath the surface, Demelza find that her own are about to be brought to light.
Then of course, there is Criston Cole. The man that whispers claim is the father of Demelza’s bastard daughter, Elyana Sand. A man torn in two between his duty as a Kingsguard, and his feelings for the mother of his child. His decisions to win Demelza’s favour culminate in a series of events that serve only to turn her against him and cast her into the arms of another.
For the Shining Star of Dorne sparkles all the brighter when she is motivated not by ill-placed love, but by spite.

Demelza Dayne finds herself at the centre of a conflict between the two women she cares about most, her best friends Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower. In the midst of brewing turmoil, and men of the court scheming to gain her favour, Demelza finds herself playing a dangerous game of survival, both in court and home in Dorne.
“You need to be more careful now.” Lindon stepped forward, resting a hand on her shoulder. “You have three bastard children. It would not be a problem in Dorne, but we are not in Dorne. You cannot continue doing as you please here, especially now that I am the ambassador.”
“What are you saying?” Demelza frowned, brow contorting as the icy realisation that Lindon’s presence came with conditions for her settled over her.
“I am saying that, despite your actions and your circumstances, you may still have a bright future here.”
“Despite my actions.” Demelza smiled coldly. “You mean, in the bearing of bastard children. Do you think, Lindon, that the fathers of my daughters face such criticism? No one may say so aloud, but everyone knows who those men are.”

House Dayne in Gardens of Misery
Corrina Penrose (nee Dayne): Eldest child and heir of Darius & Allydia Dayne. Married into House Penrose and has three children at the start of the story. Shrewd and politically driven, Corrina seeks for Demelza to make herself a promising match in Westeros.
Calix Dayne: Eldest son, current Sword of the Morning. Calix is a famous warrior in Dorne, who is extremely protective of his family but also impulsive and hot-tempered.
Lindon Dayne: Youngest son, closest in age to Demelza. Middle brother between he and Calix was deceased in childhood. Lindon spends much time in the Dornish court in Sunspear. He is a smooth talker who is not afraid to do whatever it takes to elevate himself and his family.
Demelza Dayne: Youngest child of the family, known as the Shining Star of Dorne for her beauty, and considered one of the most comely women in Dorne and Westeros. Mother of the Dornish Diamonds, and married twice by the end of the Dance of the Dragons.
Bonus:

Valko Sand: Demelza’s sworn protector and captain of her guard, from when she is ward of Viserys Targaryen for over two decades. Fiercely loyal, Valko’s bastard status is sneered in Westeros, and yet he is well respected in Dorne. A fine soldier with a fondness for children and animals.

“It’s good to have you home, Demelza.”
“She’s pregnant,” Lindon piped up.
Calix drew back to arch an eyebrow. “I’m not blind.”
“You’re Sword of the Morning.” Demelza gestured to the greatsword, unable to hide the fact that she was impressed. The four of them, along with their late middle brother, had grown up listening to tales of the Sword of the Morning and how it was a respected title for members of House Dayne. It had always been Calix’s dream, so Demelza was pleased that he had achieved it.
“Yes, he carries that sword everywhere.” Lindon grinned. “Just in case you might accidentally forget his position.”

Elyana Sand + Aemond Targaryen
It was well established that, prior to the death of Rhyanon Waters, Aemond Targaryen had taken Elyana Sand as his lover. Many among the court noted that the prince was infatuated with the girl, and would have taken her to wife if not for her bastard status. When Aemond expressed a desire to have a child by her, Elyana laughed and refused.
Although initially in support of Aegon II following the death of Viserys Targaryen, Aemond’s brutal execution of Rhyanon Waters had dire consequences. Demelza Dayne, then regent of Casterly Rock until her son Tycho Lannister came of age, was enraged and withdrew her support, causing dissent in the westerlands.
Elyana was not permitted leave from King’s Landing, much to her chagrin, and was remanded in custody along with her uncle and the Dornish ambassador, Lindon Dayne.
Calix Dayne, Lord of Starfall and Sword of the Morning, wrote to Alicent Hightower demanding his brother and niece’s immediate release or he would petition the reticent Prince Qoren Martell to intervene. It was only upon invoking the Prince’s name that Lindon and Elyana were granted leave.
Upon departing King’s Landing, Elyana struck a pact with her younger sister Ceridwen Rivers, who by then had become rider of the wild dragon Grey Ghost: they would bring down Aemond Targaryen. With the bargain struck, the remnants of the Dornish Diamonds had declared a two-woman war upon Aemond, and any affection that Elyana had once felt for him soured into bitter hatred.

For the fic writer asks:
What ship(s) captured your heart?
What character(s) captured your heart?
Did you write for a new fandom or ship this year?
Share your favorite piece of dialogue
Share an excerpt from your favourite scene
What’s something that you want to write in 2024?
6. What ship(s) captured your heart?
Hopefully 2024 is the year I share more of them, but it would definitely be Cahir and Celeste. There's so much growth in their dynamic, from two people who meet as bitter enemies when he captures her in Cintra. Cahir absolutely falls first, and it takes Celeste a long time to fully return his feelings due to his role in the Fall of Cintra, which he's completely aware of and feels constant guilt for. They just have such a rich and complex relationship, and the way their dynamic grows into one of love, trust and respect from where it began is incredibly special to me.
7. What character(s) captured your heart?
Another character I am yet to post a fic for, but it would be Vesper Rafferty. She's an absolute mess, ex-drug addict daughter of Soldier Boy and Crimson Countess with troubled, traumatic teenage years. But she goes through so much growth as a person, not to mention fighting against the self-sabotaging ways in which she tends to cope with things. Her relationships with Annie and Hughie are both incredibly special to her, and she does form other unlikely bonds as she searches for love and acceptance, when all she's had in the past is being manipulated and used.
8. Did you write for a new fandom or ship this year?
I did, and it was an unexpected one! I am admittedly not the biggest anime fan, so when I watched the live action adaptation of One Piece, I was amazed by how much I loved the characters. Creating Alix Rose was the next step in that evolution, and her dynamic with Mihawk is a really fun one.
21. Share your favourite piece of dialogue
“A whore. How original.” She laughed mirthlessly. “Better than you. A liar. A false knight. An oathbreaker.”
22. Share an excerpt from your favourite scene
“Have you no shame, Lady Dayne?”
“None,” she said gleefully, tilting her head to the side as she inspected him, “Although, I cannot begin to think why that might bother you.”
Criston sneered. “Considering the company you keep, I should not be surprised.”
“I keep excellent company these days.” Demelza took a step closer, craning her neck back to smirk up at him. “Mayhaps you have not heard that my brother Lindon is the Dornish ambassador now.”
“I’m aware.” Criston’s tone was clipped as he clasped his hands behind his back. “Though I doubt that will change anything. You will continue to behave as you see fit. Do you still find freedom in the beds of other men?”
“I certainly didn’t find it with you,” Demelza said coolly, relishing the way the words made Criston flinch. She did not care if she was cruel to him. They had long passed the stage where such hurtful words uttered to him would make her toss and turn at night.
30. What’s something that you want to write in 2024?
With the second season of House of the Dragon approaching, I'm hoping to catch Demelza's fic up to end of season 1 events. Mariel's is a little trickier since technically her fic begins after the events of season 1, but I also want to write more of her since she and Aemond are such an intriguing pair.

“Prince Qoren.” She dipped her head in a show of demurity. “It has been a while. I hear a lot about you from Lindon.”
He laughed. “Good things, I hope.”
“What if I said bad things?” Demelza’s smile grew wicked and broad.
“Then perhaps he has been speaking ill of us both.” Qoren examined her, and she noted the delight in his expression. It was not precisely desire, but there was intrigue. “Twenty years old and an unwed mother with two bastard daughters. Whatever must the Westerosi court think of you?”
There was amusement in his tone, but Demelza’s smile faded. “Whatever I want them to.”

The Dornish Diamonds + Role in the Dance
Elyana Sand spent the first few months of the civil war, following her sister Rhyanon’s death, as a prisoner in King’s Landing along with her uncle Lindon Dayne. It was only following intervention from then Lord of Starfall, Calix Dayne, that the pair were released. Elyana immediately went to Casterly Rock to support her younger half-brother, Tycho Lannister, and was promptly named commander of his armies. For every battle that was lost under Elyana’s command, three were won.
Ceridwen Rivers ventured to Dragonstone to claim a dragon on sister Rhyanon’s behalf, a journey which few expected her to survive. After her unorthodox claiming of Grey Ghost, Ceridwen was known as the Red Rider. From a soft-spoken bastard girl, Ceridwen quickly became one of the most powerful players in the realm. The pair survived many battles, including the brutal betrayal of the Two Traitors, though Grey Ghost was killed during the Battle of the Trident when he came up against Vhagar.
Between the two young women, the west was held in an iron fist, and none dared rise up against young Tycho Lannister for fear of his older half-sisters...and his mother, the infamous Demelza Dayne.
