A photographer reflects on a summer oasis: Dendy Playground

I never expected to photograph it when I first went there. Marie Dendy Playground was just the closest pool to me as I stayed the summer alone in my apartment near the Temple campus, and I was set on getting in the water. I’d been eyeing the pool since I went to Dendy to cast my vote in my first presidential election in 2016, and now the time had come. Swimming was supposed to be a break after spending my days interning with the Philadelphia Inquirer’s photo staff. But the feeling that night was impossible to ignore; the magic was palpable, and I knew I had to document it. (Click on the arrows to view the full slideshows here.)

Dendy is a summer oasis, offering a chance to cool down from the heat in a Philly neighborhood that’s hotter than average, plus affordable recreation for an area where median income ranges from $20,000 to $28,000. It’s also a hub of neighborhood life, with cookouts, basketball tournaments, and summer camp.

It soon became my oasis, too, with a regular cast of smiling basketball players and toddlers and parents and everyone else, who soon came to know me (fondly, I hope) as “the Camera Lady.”

The full list of Philly’s public pool opening dates for 2017

The first opening date is June 22

We come bearing good news: The opening dates for Philly’s 70-plus public pools have been released, which means we only have to wait out this humid, soup-like weather a little longer.

The first series of public pools will open on Thursday, June 22, with the last remaining pools opening by July 1. The city’s many spraygrounds will also open on July 1.

Here’s the full list of opening dates, via Parks and Recreation. A spokesperson for the department says that they expect to make some adjustments in the days leading up to June 22, so rest assured we will update this article with any new information. Anything location with an asterisk indicates an indoor pool.

Philly’s public pools open for 2019 season

The swimming season is officially here: Philly has started opening up its public pools for the summer.

Mayor Jim Kenney announced the first opening Monday at the newly rebuilt Bridesburg Pool in the Bridesburg Recreation Center on Richmond Street. It’s followed by pool openings at 27 more locations throughout the week. The city owns a total of 70 pools around Philly, and they’ll all be opening over the coming weeks.

The Bridesburg pool was built in 1954 and became a well-used part of the community, although it’s suffered wear and tear over the years. It was finally torn down and replaced with an entirely new pool this spring thanks to the city’s $500 million Rebuild project, according to BillyPenn.

Phillies player Mike Schmidt, a melanoma survivor, is working with the city to donate sunscreen dispensers to the Bridesburg location, as well as 10 other pools around the city, according to a statement from the mayor’s office.
