In this Exercise our students contested some common misconceptions deeply embedded within our local tourism development ideologies…students set out to demonstrate that authenticity of local experience is uniquely at the heart – franchised services, imported building methods, alien materials, staged cultural experiences are, not only unnecessary, but rather the anti-thesis.

…students developed some over-arching strategic developmental plans for the Kunburudhoo Island to shape itself as a tourist destination. The cusp of the exercise was to develop prototypical tourist startup facilities for some real-case household scenarios on the island, taking into full view many development challenges including its fiscal feasibility along with the experiential values so core to the exercise.

We are now inclined to believe and posit the notion that a modest-scale home-stay annex situated within an existing house plot can be a very viable option in the Maldives to offer an authentic island experience, even where land constraints, funding restrictions and cultural experiences are subdued due to uncontrolled, rapid urbanization etc…..
