Greatest Heavyweights - Console Fighting Games of 1993
Greatest Heavyweights is a 1993 boxing game for the Sega Genesis, developed by Acme Interactive and published by Sega. A spiritual successor to Evander Holyfield’s Real Deal Boxing, it features eight legendary fighters—Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Rocky Marciano, Joe Louis, Jack Dempsey, Larry Holmes, Floyd Patterson, and Evander Holyfield—each with their own fighting style and taunts. The game includes three modes: Exhibition, Tournament, and Career. In Career Mode, players create a custom boxer and climb the ranks through 30 fictional opponents before facing the eight real-world champions.
Gameplay is presented in a pseudo-3D side view with detailed animations, damage meters, and a replay feature. With support for the 6-button controller and commentary by Michael Buffer, Greatest Heavyweights delivers one of the most polished boxing experiences of the 16-bit era.

Fatal Fury 2 - Console Fighting Games of 1993
Fatal Fury 2 (also known as Garō Densetsu 2: Arata-naru Tatakai) is the 1993 sequel to SNK’s original Fatal Fury, released on Neo Geo and later ported to the SNES by Takara. Expanding the roster to eight playable fighters—including newcomers Mai Shiranui, Kim Kaphwan, Big Bear, and Jubei Yamada—the game introduces enhanced mechanics like desperation moves, stage hazards, and a refined two-plane battle system. Players can now freely shift between foreground and background lanes, adding tactical depth. The SNES version retains the core gameplay of the arcade original, including the ability to unlock boss characters like Billy Kane, Axel Hawk, Laurence Blood, and final boss Wolfgang Krauser via cheat codes.
With improved visuals, tighter controls, and a global tournament storyline, Fatal Fury 2 solidified the franchise’s place in the 16-bit fighting game arena..

Fatal Fury - Console Fighting Games of 1993
Fatal Fury (also known as Garō Densetsu Shukumei no Tatakai and Fatal Fury King of Fighters) is a 2D fighting game developed by SNK and ported to the Sega Genesis in 1993 by Gaibrain. Set in the gritty streets of South Town, the game follows Terry and Andy Bogard, along with Joe Higashi, as they enter the King of Fighters tournament to avenge their father's death at the hands of crime lord Geese Howard.
The Genesis version features three playable characters in story mode and a two-plane battle system that allows fighters to dodge between foreground and background layers. While the port retains much of the original Neo Geo game’s structure, it suffers from reduced animation, missing characters with Hwa Jai and Billy Kane demoted to background characters only, and downgraded visuals and audio. Despite these limitations, it remains a notable early entry in SNK’s iconic fighting franchise.

Eternal Champions - Console Fighting Games of 1993
Eternal Champions is a 2D fighting game developed by Sega Interactive and released exclusively for the Sega Genesis in 1993. Unlike most fighters of the era, it was built from the ground up for home consoles rather than arcades. The game features nine unique characters—each plucked from different time periods and resurrected by a mysterious entity known as the Eternal Champion.
These warriors, including a ninja assassin, a cyber-kickboxer, a vampire biochemist, and a prehistoric hunter, must battle for a second chance at life. With a deep lore, stage-specific “Overkill” fatalities, a stamina-based special move system, and support for the Sega Activator peripheral, Eternal Champions stood out for its ambitious mechanics and narrative depth. It later spawned a Sega CD sequel and two spin-offs.
