The more I learn about the Alberich clan the funnier it becomes that Kaeya didn't change his surname.

kaeya vc: idk anything about khaenri'ah haha I mean I tried visiting o n c e but yeah that didn't work out. Either way, Idk anything about it, I've cut ties with it, and I have no links with it whatsoever. Besides my name, but whatever, right? Also... what do you mean I have ties with the Abyss?
also kaeya: has been speaking about the now-confirmed 3.5 'Sinners' of Khaenri'ah ( "Khaenri'ah is long gone, the sinners are all that is left" voice line ) ever since the game released, has the same move sets and abilities as the abyss mages and lectors, has been seen communicating with abyss creatures and is very much aware of hilichurlian ( to the point he has probably given venti a warning threat? through a poem without him realizing), has been taught about Khaenri'ahn history and the history of his clan ( confirmed in the Hidden Strife event, and all that information was purposely destroyed as it was highly confidential ), has traveled to Sumeru in order to try to return to Khaenri'ah or at least learn more about it ( under the very false pretext that he read about Khaenri'ah's location somewhere in a book while he was in Mondstadt????? sure ), is confirmed to be a spy for Khaenri'ah ----
kaeya vc: I really don't know anything about this I am as shocked as you are. I need to gather my composure brb.

So the facts are (with spoilers, obviously)
There are 5 sinners. Rhinedottir (Albedo's creator), Surtalogi (Skirk's master), Vedrfolnir (Dain's brother) and then "Rächer of Solnari" ("Avenger of Solnari") Rerir and "The Wise" Hroptatyr who we know nothing about, but since other sinners have some relations to playable or future playable characters it's not out of the realm of possibility that Rerir and Hroptatyr do too
"They were once people of great esteem in Khaenri'ah, those who carried the hopes of the nation"
According to Dain the sinners couldn't resist the call of the abyss and became transcendent beings in possessing of a great power before or during the Cataclysm. However other source (Shadow amidst snowstorms event) mentions that Rhinedottir became a sinner after Khaenri'ah fell. I'm pretty sure the one who said that was Albedo, who was created after the Cataclysm
Kaeya's father left him in Mondstadt as "Khaenri'ah's last hope"
Alberich is the surname of the founder of the Abyss order and Kaeya is his descendant. Kaeya claims that he didn't know about that.
During the Cataclysm pure-blood Khaenri'ahns turned immortal, others turned into monsters
Chlothar Alberich, the founder of the Abyss order, had an illegitimate son who turned into a hilichurl and died young. We don't know if he had legitimate children and we know nothing about his other possible relatives. Even if he did have other children, he didn't sound too fond of "the life that my family had arranged for me"
Chlothar had founded the Abyss Order after a religious experience an encounter with Vedrfolnir. He has also died at least 100 years after founding the Order, even through he was supposed to be immortal
The Alberich Clan was a nobility clan who was known for producing leaders of Khaenri'ah's knights. Anfortas Alberich became a regent when King Irmin was unable to rule. Anfortas supposedly died in Sumeru. It's is NOT confirmed from what I got: we have a message which says that his squad fought to the last one and an achievement In the name of Anfortas "visit the place where the heroes met their end". Is Anfortas considered part of these heroes?
We don't know the relation between Kaeya, Chlothar and Anfortas apart from the fact that they are relatives
So, currently one of the sinners (Rerir or Hroptatyr, most likely) being an Alberich and therefore related to Kaeya and the Abyss order is not impossible. Hells, even Vedrfolnir and/or Dain could be an Alberich - we don't know their last name but we know that at least Dain was a knight, and the captain of the Royal Guard is a high title. And Alberich clan had a lot of high ranking knights.
But even if we leave Dain&Vedrfolnir out, still. The Sinners were held in high esteem, same as the only aristocratic clan we currently know of.
Also idk, the fact that Dain called them the hopes and Kaeya was called the last hope doesn't seem meaningless to me. But someone should probably check if chinese uses the same word, it might be a translation coincidence

a collection of things kaeya foreshadowed
(copy pasted directly from reddit) one of the main appeal points in Kaeya for me is just how much potential his character holds, and how that gets proven with every new main story-centric update. Everything Kaeya says holds a certain double meaning, and we only get to find them out when we know more, so I thought I'd compile all the things (that I know of) that Kaeya has foreshadowed or teased in one way or another because I feel like I never see anybody mention how many things he's said before started making more sense after we knew more things?
starting with his story quest (1.0) predicts a couple of things! the first one being the first three nations' plotlines. Dvalin being the 'wicked abyss dragon' and Osial being the 'hydra', then in Inazuma signora being the 'silver-haired banshee' (for those who don't know Signora's lore centres around her actions being motivated by grief over the loss of her husband I'm pretty sure, so she can vaguely check the banshee title off)
Tumblr media
These connections were proven further in Sumeru! During the Aranyaka (3.0) quest, specifically in a section called 'The Children of Vimara Village' the traveller is asked to tell three kids stories. Paimon references Kaeya directly and they follow the template of telling the children stories about our feats by following what Kaeya has said.
Tumblr media
I won't include the whole dialogue section because it would be too long. But essentially: they tell Iotham about Dvalin, Kavus about Osial, and Sudabeh about Ei and Yae Miko. I believe that might be because Signora's story and ending aren't exactly suitable for children, given that she got executed by one of the 'distinguished ladies' after losing a match to the death against the traveller.
Later in the Caribert quest we meet Kaeya at the start and find out he's the descendant of the Abyss Order's founder, Clothar. Now, stay with me please, I admit that this might be a stretch on my part but I do believe if you squint your eyes it makes sense, but what if I tell you that was also foreshadowed in his story quest?
In his story quest, he talks about his grandfather and the sword he had. at the end of the quest, Kaeya does give us the harbinger of dawn to make up for him tricking us. now, if we take into account the time loop theory (which has been proven to at least some extent with the Aranara and all) and the fact that since Kaeya is a descendant of Clothar and our sibling is the prince/princess of the abyss order which Clothar founded, you could kind of say they're vaguely related, and since all that happened like centuries ago and Kaeya is in his alleged 20's, heck, the abyss twin is basically their grandparent!
Tumblr media
It's also worth mentioning that the sword harbinger of dawn could also be tied to Dainsleif, otherwise known as "The Twilight Sword." the description of the sword could be vaguely tied to him as well as one who "failed in his duty".
Of course, that piece of dialogue isn't the only thing that foreshadowed the reveal of Kaeya being related to the Abyss Order's founder or even him being some sort of vague royalty. (Regent, I know, but still they're regents that stepped up and took charge)(For the sake of having consistent sources of where I got info from, the regent thing was confirmed in the 2.7 Hidden Strife event). However, before we knew he was a regent, the Kaeya prince theory was by no means unpopular, and there's a collection of things that allude to it. He has a voice line about Fischl in which he teases how appropriate it'd be for him to be a descendant of a royal person. he's the only blade-carrying Knight of Favonius whose normal attacks start with 'Favonius Bladework'. Instead, his normal attacks are titled 'Ceremonial Bladework'.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I cannot find photos for these which saddens me, but I can swear that his second passive talent was named 'Heart of the Abyss' before it was changed to 'Glacial Heart', and his first constellation was 'Royal Blood' before it was changed to 'excellent blood' both of which were great contributors for the theory. I'd greatly appreciate it if anyone who has the photos could provide them I feel like I'm going crazy, I'm sure I saw photos before but I can only find people talking about it.
and personally, the craziest one in my opinion is his 'More About Kaeya IV' voice line, which actually teased the five sinners of Khaenri'ah that Dainsleif told us about in Bedtime Story (4.7 !!?)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
there was some suspicion about the voice line back in 3.5 when we originally met one of the sinners through our sibling's memories, but I thought nothing could be proven by one guy who goes by sinner because well, maybe he called himself that because that's what they're viewed as! and kaya saying that could be coming from a similar place of talking about Khaenri'ahns as sinners because that's the view that led to their downfall or something. but no there's a kind of group actually titled the sinners that mess with things, that Kaeya seems to be fully aware of.
honorable mentions for things that I personally think will also gain relevance at some point:
possibly relating to a Khaenri'ahn tradition about their right eye? he isnt the first one we've seen with something covering his eye.
Tumblr media
Owls are closely tied to the Ragnvindr family actually, and I'm pretty sure that the owl of Dragonspine is supposed to like either a fictional made-up thing or something that's never supposed to be seen, i cannot for the life of me remember where i got that from i might be lying but i remember something like that (maybe the dragonspine gliders?)
Tumblr media
Not a screenshot because it's just my personal idea, but I will die on this hill: Kaeya's vision backstory states that after Crepus died, Kaeya was overwhelmed with guilt about it, so much so that he actually went to Diluc's doorstep and confessed everything. Diluc was enraged and the two of them fought. Seems straightforward, except it isn't like, at all actually.
There was a side to Kaeya that he kept hidden from the world: In truth, he was an agent of Khaenri'ah, placed in to serve their interests. His father had abandoned him in this strange and unknown land to fulfill this mission, and it was Master Crepus and the city of Mondstadt that had welcomed him with open arms when they found him. If Khaenri'ah and Mondstadt went to war, which side should he support? To whom should he offer his assistance: his birth father, who had ruthlessly abandoned him? Or his adoptive father, who had loved him and raised him? For the longest time, Kaeya had agonized over these impossible questions, caught between the opposing demands of loyalty and duty, faced with an impossible choice between truth and happiness. But now, Crepus' death upset this delicate balance. He felt liberated, but also ashamed of how selfishly he was responding. As an adopted son, he should have saved Crepus, but he had arrived moments too late. As a brother, he should have shared in Diluc's grief, and yet as their father lay dying on the ground, he had hung back behind his brother, that ancient plot running through his mind.
I have two main points that don't make sense to me about this:
He felt guilty about not showing up on time to help Crepus and Diluc, and Crepus dying made him more conflicted than grief-filled because Crepus was one of the main things tying him to Mondstadt. He found himself deliberating 'that ancient plot' literally right there and then, not even as an afterthought. That guilt then made him confess all his secrets to Diluc, literally in the same day. What I think doesn't fully make sense is the fact that Crepus dying doesn't really feel like enough of a reason for him to go spelling all his secrets. I get that he felt guilty about not feeling all full of grief and instead thinking about a personal conflict, but imo that doesn't seem like enough of a reason to spill secrets of the gravity that Kaeya seems to be holding on to, especially on the same day that it happened in the first place. He spent almost no time mulling it over and thinking about whether or not he should tell Diluc or not, it's almost like not telling him right away would've made everything even worse somehow. Which brings me to my second point.
Why was Diluc so upset over what Kaeya had to say? Kaeya said he anticipated his anger, but what could he have possibly said to make Diluc in his state of grief be angry enough to immediately fight with full intent to harm and possibly even kill his brother, the closest person to him other than his father? Kaeya being an agent of Khaenri'ah doesn't seem like enough of a reason for all that I think. Maybe anger and being really upset, especially considering the timing of it all, but drawing their blades against each other? instantly? you could argue the response was that extreme because Diluc wasn't thinking clearly and was mourning, and the fact that Kaeya was lying about his whole identity ever since he stepped foot in the manor might've set him off, and I'd agree honestly. But I still think both of their reactions were incredibly extreme, even with their heightened emotions.
His vision! every faithful Kaeya enthusiast knows that his vision is slightly different from other Mondstadt vision holders, i don't buy that it was just an honest design mistake honestly, it's an easy fix and a weird mistake to make in the first place, and considering who the vision belongs to I think it was very intentional. maybe his vision is fake and his cryo is actually abyss powers or something ooo (also kind of a joke I have no clue)
I made a whole extensive post about Kaeya's design and all the little details in it (check it out you want to soooo bad it's pinned in my profile) but I think one of the things that could be a subtle foreshadowing and tying into the whole paragraph I made is that Kaeya has some vague fatui elements in his outfit! which is a crazy thing imo
This is all I can come up with at the moment. There might be more that I'm forgetting or unaware of, but I think all this is worth keeping in mind. I love Kaeya and he's been my main for three years, ever since I started playing, but I'd be lying if I told you I don't think he's lying to everyone about a whole bunch of things. I think he might be genuinely conflicted about whether he should stay loyal to his origins or the people who have actually raised and taken care of him, but that does not mean he's not privy to a lot more information than he lets on. Kaeya kind of seems like he knows how everything will turn out, everything he says and does is intentional and thought out. I need him dead, or a 5*.
I'd love to hear anything else you think is suspicious or might take on more meaning in the future from Kaeya! also please correct me if im wrong about anything, a lot of these are thoughts that have been circulating in my head for like years atp but i might've forgotten technicalities on some stuff.

Thinking about ragbros and their direct parallel to the twins. The traveler who is widely considered a hero and spends their days protecting teyvat and their sibling who is leading the abyss who seeks to destroy that. Yeah that's a direct parallel to diluc being the protector of mondstat while kaeya is a descendant of the abyss orders founder. Like. Do you think after the traveler finds out about kaeya and Diluc's past they're just. Absolutely floored by how similar they are? And hoyo wants us to be normal about this???

thinking about how in the caribert quest kaeya NEVER straight up says "oh i actually didnt know I was the descendant of the abyss order's founder"
sure you could argue that "well that answers some questions" is more or less the same thing, but kaeya's monotone reaction towards this allegedly 'new' information has been a topic of discourse in the community and whether he was lying or not. And i just think its rather intresting considering how this is something kaeya's known for. Not exactly lying but telling the truth in a way that misleads you, which is most clearly shown in his own story quest.
and also, when paimon asks him "you're not involved with the abyss order are you?" This is his response:
"I would be just as delighted to hunt down the abyss order tomorrow as i have always been"
WHAT DOES HE MEAN BY THAT
cuz depending on how delighted he usually is to hunt down the abyss order that answer can imply two entirely diffrent things.
I may be reaching too far but something DID NOT FEEL RIGHT ABOUT THAT INTERACTION AND I CANT PUT MY FINGER ON IT.

Kaeya when he has to function around the existence of the brother he mourns his relationship with due to a volatile hurtful falling out born out of the crushing guilt he has about his own existence: 😎
Kaeya when he gets told he’s descended from the founder of the abyss order & deflects feeling any attachment or emotional conflict over his past: 😎
Kaeya when ppl arguing make the child he cares about sad for .2 seconds (he cannot bear the sight of Klee being subject to the confusing & seemingly pointless pain of familial conflict that he is so familiar with when (unlike himself) she does not deserve to have to accept it & learn to endure it all on her own):

Okay. So essentially.
There are several options.
First, Kaeya refers to Dainslief pointedly as a pure-blooded Khaenri'ahn, because of his ‘eyes’
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He says this as almost if he is not pure blooded. Unfortunately, that doesn’t confirm or deny. Their eyes are patterned the same, however, so I’m thinking, if Kaeya isn’t solely Khaenri'ahn, maybe that has something to do with the color.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kaeya's are a dark purple-blue whereas Dainsleif's are more of a lighter teal-blue. Chlothar's appear to be also a lighter blue.
Tumblr media
Either way, this isn’t very conclusive. Kaeya could or could not be a pure-blooded Khaenri'ahn. Well except there’s one singular problem. All pure-blooded Khaenri'ahns are cursed with immortality. And as we’ve learned, all non-pure-blooded Khaenri'ahn's were turned into hilichurls. So either Kaeya IS pure-blooded. Or, something very strange is going on with him.
We'll table that for later.
First, we know that Kaeya is definitely a descendent of the Alberich clan- more specifically he says of Chlothar, the founder the Abyss Order.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Second, when Chlothar tells you Caribert's identity, he calls him, specifically, his illegitimate son. As if he might have another one floating around somewhere.
Tumblr media
Might he has another pure-blooded son out there? Could he be Kaeya’s ancestor? Maybe. That would also make Kaeya pure blooded, thus immortal, thus solving our problem. That’s one option.
Let's keep going. Another important piece of data is that Caribert's mother is from Mondstadt.
Tumblr media
This is only significant because, out of all seven nations to pick from, Kaeya's father also dropped him off in Mondstadt. It could just be a coincidence but, still. It might not be.
Anyway, moving on. I have no theories about what was under Caribert's mask that made him lose it and I truly have no idea why the Sinner's/the abyss's dark energy surrounded him. Either way, however, his fate remains unknown.
Except for this
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This seems to indicate that The Loom of Fate is not a thing or a person but some sort of concept/state of being. Either way Caribert is, for all intents and purposes, not here anymore.
The reason I say not here instead of dead is because we have no proof of death. We know Chlothar is dead, but not Caribert.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Where does all this leave us?
Well, the first option is the simplest one. Kaeya is the descendant of Chlothar's legitimate child so he is a pure blooded Khaenri'ahn, hence why he is not a hilichurl.
The second option is that he could be a descendant of Caribert himself. As we know, somehow, Chlothar managed to cure his curse of immortality. Maybe that was through whatever happened with Caribert and the Loom of Fate. Maybe Caribert was able to cure himself. Maybe Kaeya is his descendant and thus a non-pure-blooded Khaenri'ahn who is also not a hilichurl.
The third option is that Kaeya is Caribert himself. It makes sense why he was dropped off in Mondstadt. It’s the home of his father's love. Now, the major problem with this one is that it doesn’t fit with what we currently know about the timeline. This occurred hundreds of years ago and Kaeya clearly had a childhood with the Ragnvindrs. I’m not ruling out this option though because Genshin always surprises me.
Tumblr media
Either way, “You are our last hope” feels very significant here. Perhaps it has to do with the Loom of Fate and why Kaeya is seemingly unaffected by the curse.

i wanna talk about visions. specifically, kaeya's vision.
this will contain spoilers for the caribert archon quest, as well as spoilers for kaeya's backstory.
(VERY short summary at the bottom btw)
people get visions for different reasons, though it's all based on ambition. there are subcategories for each element, which makes each character of a specific element different.
anemo is for those who have lost someone close to them (like barbatos).
geo is given to people who are strong-willed or hardheaded (like morax).
electro is given to those who are different/cast out [like beelzebul (she was much different than baal)].
I think dendro is given to people who are dedicated to perfecting their skills? I'm not sure on this one but it seems right looking at dendro characters.
hydro is given to people with a strong belief system.
pyro is typically given to people with fiery passion.
and cryo is given to people who have faced conflict. mainly internal conflict (ex. self-hatred, self-deprecation, etc.). it is also given to people who have been isolated or cast out (like ayaka).
but I think that their visions work in different ways for those reasons, too. for example, yoimiya wanted a vision to light fireworks, and her vision gave her the ability to imbue her arrows with pyro energy (allowing her to light them safely from a distance). sucrose was experimenting with anemo energy when she got hers, and she can now freely throw around anemo energy whenever and wherever she wants (she probably uses it most in the lab). beidou got hers after fighting haishan (a deadly sea monster) and she can now parry powerful attacks with ease (something you'd want when fighting huge monsters).
but then there's kaeya. he definitely fits the internal conflict aspect of getting a cryo vision. he (very obviously) hates himself, and he was indeed cast out from his own family. he got his vision when fighting his own brother, and he was literally on the brink of death. if he hadn't gotten his vision in that moment, there would be no kaeya.
let's talk about what his vision does in particular, and why it does those things.
first off, it all seems very, very simple. his skill shoots out a burst of frost, and his burst makes a few icicles.
burst first: they are an obvious reference to the abyss. when cryo abyss mages are reforming their shields, there are icicles flying around them. this is a reference to kaeya's heritage as a descendant of chlotar alberich, the founder of the abyss order.
now, his elemental skill: it shoots out a burst of ice, almost like it's meant to stop an oncoming blast of fire...sound familiar? (*COUGH* DILUC'S BURST *COUGH*) but that's not all it does. his passive, cold-blooded strike, makes his skill heal kaeya. nobody else, just kaeya. hm...i wonder why he'd need to self-heal? (*COUGH* DILUC *COUGH* SELF-HATRED *COUGH*) but wait, there's more! kaeya's c4 (which I recently got) makes him SUMMON A SHIELD when his hp gets below a certain percent...and it only shields him. if you switch characters, the shield disappears until kaeya is back on the field. hm...why would kaeya need a shield when his health gets so low... it's almost like his vision was suited to the EXACT circumstances as when he got it. self-healing and self-shielding. his vision is catered to his fight with diluc.
now that begs the question: why did kaeya, a KHAENRI'AHN, get a vision? the gods hate khaenri'ahns, and celestia eradicated them. and here's the thing: im not sure who exactly gives out visions. it could be celestia, or it could be the archons themselves. so, it's either:
the cryo archon saw potential, or
celestia wants to use him to eradicate the abyss
it's pretty much common knowledge that kaeya's vision is different, and you can't say it's because he's khaenri'ahn. scaramouche was born in inazuma, but has a sumeru vision. this means that the vision case denotes the nation the vision was received in. that's why kaeya has a mond-style case. but why two wings instead of one?
i think it's a marker. so that when celestia decides to finally start yet another war, they know which mond citizen is their little pawn. they know which khaenri'ahn not to kill. they want to use him, to show them that their founder's descendant has learned to live (semi) happily in teyvat.
but hey it's just a theory and this was all done with like. zero research, just my general knowledge on kaeya and his backstory (i love kaeya so general knowledge is. a lot.). i repeat: it's all just theoretical. don't take this as fact I just love kae so so so much and think about him all the time <3
anyways to summarize, kaeya's vision acts the way it does because it's a self-defense mechanism from when diluc almost killed him. and I think it looks different because celestia wants to use him.
ok thanks goodnight

3.5 spoilers
ok, so i’ve thought somewhat about how much of existing kaeya’s lore hoyo would be retconning by making him not know he’s from abyss order bloodline and i think the most logical way i can reconcile all of the existing in game drops and the 3.5 dialogue is that kaeya knew he was from khaenriah, but was raised to believe Alberich clan are the regents of khaenriah, without being told of the abyss order connection. like i don’t think they’re retconning him knowing anything at all
bc like i can understand that things change in long-term projects, so if it was only the starting game lore, it’d be one thing. but hidden strife didn’t happen that long ago and based on the hidden strife alone kaeya’s dad called Alberich bloodline “regents of khaenriah” and casually referred to king Irmin, which implies Kaeya had at least basic grasp of khaenriah’s history and politics. this also tracks with his voice lines about Fischl and being descendant of lost royalty. so like, i believe he still Knows Shit and much more than he lets on, but maybe not very systematically.
but also now that I think about it, if I was dad!Alberich and i was preparing my son to plant him in Mond’s family, I would probs not tell him “hey sweetie, you and daddy are from the long proud line of the founders of the Evil Order. Yeah, you know, the Evil Order, which does Terrible Things, that’s us!” and instead present yourself as the noble regents, who picked up the pieces after royals fucked the country up, which like based on what we’ve seen of Chlothar, they’d probably sincerely see like this. this lets Alberichs to claim Khaenriah as both their legacy and responsibility, and it’s better to tell small kid he has a duty to his country, for which he is the last hope, instead of being like “cutiepie, one day when you grow up, you will be an important part of the Nefarious Crochet of Destiny, which our Evil Order has been planning for generations”
that would explain how he didn’t know about the abyss connection, but still picked up enough of lore and hints, which explains him referencing “sinners” in his voiceline about khaenriah frex. like after what we’ve learned in this archon quest, alberichs probably used “sinners” a lot in reference to themselves and khaenriah, so kaeya could catch a lot of religious shit and ideology, without knowing it’s connected to abyss order, bc like. this whole time we didn’t know shit fuck about sinner too! even Dain didn’t know about it and he was abyss sibling’s boyfriend. it’s a pretty well-hidden shit.
like kaeya obv never was supposed to know what his “mission” was, since even old mona’s voice line says “he thinks he made a clean break with the past”. which would very well lead to his state of anxiety, where he knew he’s planted in mond with *some* purpose, not knowing what that purpose it is and having to keep a secret that he was planted here strategically, but also since he was a smart kid who picked up enough to get Bad Vibes, feel preemptively guilty that MAYBE he’s a living timebomb which will be used against the country he grew to love, including his adopted family, but also not being able to tell so to the said adopted family bc he was raised to believe he has duty to his homeland as it’s last hope. like i think this uncertainty checks out better with his characterization from the start than being certain you’re from the Evil Order the whole time.
