"Managing waste begins with managing our habits—each action today shapes a cleaner tomorrow."
On December 4, 2024, I attended the WASS UP talk, an online seminar focusing on the Waste-At-Source Segregation (WASS) project of UPLB. Hosted via Zoom and led by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Community Affairs (OVCCA), this event aimed to relaunch the WASS UP, LB! campaign. Facilitated by DEVC 208 graduate students under Dr. Benjamina Paula G. Flor, the talk featured Engr. Christian Paulo Altoveros, UPLB’s Pollution Control Officer, as the key speaker. It was a compelling two-hour discussion on waste management issues, particularly the improper disposal of campus waste.
The seminar began with a presentation on UPLB’s waste statistics, revealing a daily generation of 36 cubic meters of waste and a staggering monthly hauling cost of Php 1,404,000.00. These figures underscored not only the financial strain but also the environmental and health consequences of poor waste management. Engr. Altoveros elaborated on its impacts, including polluted water bodies, air pollution, and harm to flora and fauna. He also emphasized the university's regulatory obligations, citing recent compliance updates with DENR-EMB and its role in meeting ASEAN University Network-Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) standards.
A critical aspect of the discussion was the relaunch of the WASS UP campaign with its slogan, Iwas Sakit, Iwas Basura. This encapsulated the project’s goals of minimizing health risks and reducing waste through proper segregation. Engr. Altoveros presented a detailed PowerPoint to drive home these points, with slides that mapped out the waste management process and illustrated the broader environmental impact of neglecting it. These visuals served as effective tools to clarify and emphasize the message, ensuring it resonated with the audience.
As a 4th-year Devcom student at UPLB, I found the seminar particularly meaningful. It reflected the essence of what I have learned: that communication is central to addressing environmental challenges. Engr. Altoveros’ insights reinforced the need for clear and consistent messaging to foster behavior change in waste management. The active involvement of DEVC 208 graduate students in facilitating the seminar also demonstrated the power of participatory approaches in engaging communities.
Looking back on the talk, I realized the social dimensions of waste management—how habits, attitudes, and collective responsibility are integral to its success. While the WASS UP campaign is commendable, its long-term impact depends on sustained awareness and participation. This realization made me think critically about the gaps in campus-wide implementation and the potential role of communicators in bridging these gaps.
The seminar also inspired me to take action as a Devcom student. Communication tools such as infographics, social media campaigns, and webinars could amplify the campaign’s message. Engaging student organizations and academic courses in discussions about sustainable waste practices would also ensure these efforts are institutionalized.
Overall, the WASS UP talk was an eye-opening experience that highlighted the urgency of addressing waste management issues on campus. As a DevCom student, I am motivated to use my skills to advocate for sustainable practices and contribute to a cleaner and healthier UPLB community.

SCICOMVERSATION: “First you look, then you datafy: Using Twitter insights to understand a vulnerable group”
Tumblr media
A bit of an informal post, just my stream-of-consciousness writings at 2 AM.
Assistant Professor Aldo Gavril Lim was one of the best speakers I've ever had the pleasure of listening to in the College of Development Communication at the University of the Philippines Los Banos.
Marami akong natutuhan sa talk ni Prof. Lim.
Sa kurso namin na DEVC 126, we were taught that the field of participatory journalism was sort of a crossover between participatory research and ethnographic research.
Kasi, when you practice this, you immerse yourself in your participant's world to learn about them. Sometimes, you lurk and just observe. Sometimes, you participate. And you listen...carefully.
This is what Prof. Lim essentially did.
Nag-lurk siya sa Twitter to observe the community at "makapasok" sa life-world ng Filipino HIV positive males--pinag-aralan niya 'yung kanilang language, culture, at kung gaano sila ka-connected with each other.
Sa ganitong paraan, his stakeholders were able to participate through their own spaces (without them knowing na they're being subjected to data gathering procedures)--though, if we were to do the same thing as journalists and researchers, we have to be mindful of their privacy.
I think, and as what I have experienced din in my previous devcom courses, kailangan din talagang meron din munang immersion sa community at mag-obserba sa kanila before you actually try to get them to open up--and eventually, collaborate with them in shaping the stories they want to tell the world.
Kung kilala kasi natin ang language (especially vernacular) at culture nila, it'd be easier for them to trust us--na kumbaga eh pagbubuksan nila tayo ng loob--at hindi na tayo magiging intruder.
At the same time, hindi natin kailangan maging intrusive or extractive sa pagtatanong.
Ika nga ni Prof. Lim, marami tayong makukuha just by letting our stakeholders talk about themselves--tulad na lamang ng kanilang issues, concerns, nature as a person and roles nila sa kanilang community.

Part 7 – Help! I Don't Know Where To Start
If you are completely stumped about how to search for a particular item you need (for example, you don't know any sources, or what the category of what you want is called, you just have a half-remembered phrase), try the following strategy:
- What sort of information do you want? Considering this may help you understand which actual search engine you want.
- Go to an appropriate search engine (not an AI, especially not a generative AI - an actual search using some sort of actual search algorithm directly on web pages or robot-generated caches of web pages). The two most popular generic ones are Google and Bing.
Beware: both main general search engines (Google and Bing) incorporate AI in their search - whether you want it or not. This means that their results must be verified every single search, by checking the links that look promising. You will encounter some information you don't want before getting anything useful, because some of it will be hallucinating the search terms. A giveaway for when that has happened is if you get to the site, do a search (Ctrl+F or Command+F) for one of your search terms and get absolutely nothing.
- Get your trusty search engine. Consider getting at least one of each of the following types of search engine bookmarked:
A general search engine you find comfortable to use (I prefer Ecosia, but Brave is becoming an increasingly good option. If you have a typical search engine to use, carrying on using its links remains valid).
A free-use content search engine (such as openverse.org) - this allows searching for items you can include in your work that doesn't have copyright restrictions. Often useful for test/lorem ipsum material (for example, to show what a website you are designing will look like). If your STEM degree includes presentations or creative work, this may come in useful for that.
A wiki search engine (such as wiki.com) - this will allow you to search wikis. The correct way to use wikis in academic research is to go to them, check out the links and find some that either explain the terms you need well enough to use one of the strategies I listed earlier - or mention academically valid resources in their own right (the gold standard are static items by subject matter experts that have been peer-reviewed; sometimes you may be given permission to use weaker sources in service of a particular learning goal, or need to use them to troubleshoot a problem with a project).
A PDF search engine (such as Bielefeld Academic Search Engine or ResearchGate - if you're in STEM, bookmark both - or Gutenberg - if you're in the arts, bookmark this at least) - this allows searching for ebooks. Many ebooks are academically valid resources in their own right, although many… aren't. Caution is advised, but when this works, it will save you a lot of time.
The Wayback Machine. Highly useful for resources that aren't on the main part of the internet, or which have changed significantly.
Your university/college library system
Your local public library system
Your university/college/department thesis/dissertation search system
For STEM specifically, also consider the following:
WolframAlpha
The Directory of Open Access Journals
CSS Search - specifically for CSS code
DevX - specifically for coding in DevC
(IT is relatively light on required literature searching, by STEM standards.
(Please avoid any sort of AI-generated summary from search engines. This not only includes the summaries that Bing and Google in particular do, but also search engines that have AI-generated answers as their main reason for being, such as Perplexity.ai, You.com. or ChatGPT Search/ScholarGPT. These are even less appropriate for academic searches than they are for general use. I say this because a lot of well-meaning tech enthusiasts use AI summaries to do trickier parts of their code, and end up either leaking sensitive information to the large language model AI - or getting wrong answers).
hello! i remembered you took a course in library sciences if i recall correctly, and i've always loved reading your essays. i was wondering who to ask for tips on academic research and i felt you were the perfect person to ask!
strangely my instructor is encouraging us to use scholar GPT, saying that if we didn't use AI for searching for literature, writing, etc then we would fall behind. let me just say, i did, convincing myself i'd only use it that one time on a time crunch. i then got lazy, and i felt extremely unproductive.
i would love any advice or anything really that you could give! i'm in STEM, i don't think that is particularly relevant but just in case it is. although it doesn't have to be exclusive to that, only supplementary. thank you
Warning! Long entry alert!
Thank you for the ask! You remember correctly, I studied library sciences, which included some research training. I'm also in the early part of degree #2 (IT with - long story - a history component).
Firstly, I should ask: is this for searching for literature, or a literature search? To a non-student, those will sound identical. However, there's a big difference at university/college level. Searching for literature is simply getting sources to understand a topic. Most university/college coursework requires this to some extent. A literature search seeks to obtain every significiant item of knowledge about a very narrow question. It is typically not needed until the third year of undergraduate level.
Most of my advice is focused on the first question. However,
Some of the departments have given different ideas for how to research (which makes sense - library science is a social science, IT is a pure science and history is an art). However, most of it is applicable across disciplines.
AI is not ready to do literature searching of either type. It has too many hallucinations and mistakes to be useful. However, I can see why an instructor might ask people to use it anyway:
Part 1 – Providing Alternative Viewpoints
University and college are partly there to provide contrary opinions and challenge received wisdom. Academia in general is aware that AI is a hot topic and most universities and colleges have strong anti-AI-in-academia opinions. Thus, any of several pro-AI positions might be posited by other academics to ensure that students think about their use of AI instead of reflexively taking a position and never reconsidering it.
You may be being asked to consider multiple takes on the subject, as this is good training for the official course material in upper levels of degree courses. If you have no insight into your instructor's motives, this is the safest reason to assume, because it doesn't assume anything about their actual opinion (for example, it's possible to be anti-AI, still advocate thinking about AI through multiple lenses and thus be willing to take an opinion one does not actually believe for the benefit of students' developing a thoughtful approach to AI).
The proper answer to this is to make a sensible decision about AI and be prepared to revise it. You've used the tools currently on offer and found them inadequate, so different techniques are appropriate. You have, therefore, done your honest best as a student to thoughtfully consider the matter.
The sensible move in 2025 is to avoid using AI for literature search. However, colleges and universities want students to think about this and not simply assume the position they had entering university is or will continue to be the case. That applies to AI and almost every other topic the university/college teaches.

Everyone has a type
I’m trying to be better at quick stories so uh here.
_______________________________
One minute Billy was standing outside of Beck’s Diner, feeling cold and hungry and wondering if a quick meal was worth the last few dollars he had when a feeling came over him. It was both familiar and completely alien and from one breath to the next, he was somewhere entirely different. He blinked, Superman blinked back in confusion. There was Batman and Robin off to the side, Flash dropped a snack bar he’d been munching on in surprise, there were two Lanterns in sight and both of them were swearing. But mostly Billy focused on all the stars glittering from the windows and the lovely view of the Earth from the teleporter pad.
He was.... on the Watchtower. Wait a moment, he was on the Watchtower as Billy Batson. He went from slightly confused to panicking in moments.
“Who the hell is that? It’s some kid!”
“How did he get here?”
“You were supposed to grab Marvel! Who’s this!”
“Shit send him back!”
“We can’t send him back! We don’t know what happened! He could be a spy and report straight to the villains!”
“Son,” Clark (no it’s Superman, don’t say Clark then you’re really screwed, Batson) said gently but with a steely, cautious edge to his voice. He floated closer and Billy took a few stumbling steps back. Should he run? He wouldn’t get far with the fastest in the League, save Marvel of course, right here. What would he even do? He knew these hallways like he knew the back of his hand but he’s in the wrong body and he had no idea what to do and he was kind of freaking out a little bit. Okay maybe a lot. His anxiety must have been obvious, if not for the reasons they thought, because Clark’s expression softened just a bit. “It’s okay, we had a little mix-up but we’ll get this worked out.”
“Where am I?” he asked because that was the logical question anyone would ask.
“That’s classified,” one Lantern, John Stewart, said with a distrustful frown.
“We’re not going to hurt you,” Clark tried again, floating a little closer. “What’s your name? Where are you from?” Oh no way in hell did Bill want his name in their files.
“Fawcett City,” he murmured instead, still tamping down the instinct to run. He glanced over at the Bats who had yet to intervene. The newest Robin, a kid his age named Jason was looking at Billy like he was some kind of puzzle he couldn’t figure out. Bruce, as usual, was hard to read behind the mask.
“Well we got the right city at least,” Flash chuckled awkwardly. “You didn’t happen to see a flying man in a red suit, did you? Can shoot lightning, big smile, bigger heart?”
Oh they were trying to get Marvel, made sense, it was just very, very bad news for his secret identity and overall mental health. He heard some of the others whispering to each other, going over the transporter and wondering what could have gone wrong. Pretty soon, they were going to draw together some very uncomfortable facts and his identity was going to be exposed. No one would ever take him seriously again, he’d be out of the League, lose all his friends and-
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw black and realized the Dark Knight had snuck up on him without noticing. Normally he’s taller than Bruce but now the man towers over him and he has to wonder how there’s any crime left in Gotham if this guy protects it. Even worse, he was smiling.
“I believe we just had a simple misunderstanding,” Bruce (no, definitely Batman when he’s like this) said simply. “I’ll take Captain Marvel’s communicator back and we’ll send you back where you came from.” Billy’s mind went blank.
“We honed in on Cap’s comm,” Clark said with a frown before looking back at Billy, “but how does he have it?”
“A distracted hero, an enterprising and quick fingered boy and an opportunity too good to pass up,” Batman subtly looked over at his sidekick. “I’m familiar with the story.” Realization slammed into Billy, Bruce had recounted his first meeting with Jason at least a couple of times. He always had this soft smile on his face as he described coming back to find the Batmobile missing it’s tires and the bold street kid who’d lifted them. That was the same sort of smile he was wearing now.
“Are you saying this punk took Cap’s comm?” Hal said with a little laugh. “Man, you got balls kid targeting someone with the literal Gods on his side.”
“Uh,” was all Billy could say because what else could he do? They thought he was a thief! And that Cap was a bungling idiot who let a kid steal his equipment! He supposed that was better than them realizing their teammate was twelve and homeless. He wordlessly opened his jacket and deposited the comm into Batman’s waiting hand.
“He didn’t see you take it, did he?” Batman said casually, “he would have reported it missing if he had.”
“Uh,” Billy said again because this whole situation felt like an uncomfortable fever dream. Batman tucked the device into his case and loomed a little bit more.
“Do no take things from heroes again or you may find yourself with more than you can handle,” he growled before nodding at John to fire up the teleporter. “But keep up those skills and you might find yourself with a job one day.” As before, one moment Billy was staring down Batman and the next we was back in front of Beck’s Diner. An old lady with a dog startled when he appeared put of nowhere and hurriedly walked past. Bill looked down at his hands in confusion.
“What just happened?”
XxX
“Hey Cap,” Hal said in a sing song voice. “Lose something?” He continued holding up Marvel’s missing communicator. The parts of Billy inside the god rolled his eyes but on the outside, Marvel feigned surprise and took the device.
“I’ve been looking for this, wasn’t looking forward to asking Batman for a new one. Where did you find it?” Marvel asked, clipping it back on his belt.
“We were beaming you up for a mission debriefing and instead snagged a ratty Fawcett kid. Seems he nicked your comm while you weren’t looking, probably was gonna sell it or keep it as a souvenir until we accidentally kidnapped him.” Hal said with a wide grin. Wisdom of Solomon said the man was just teasing him and delighted to find a mistake in the otherwise godly reputation. Billy thinks he’s just kind of an ass in general. Or maybe he’s just a bit offended about Billy being called ratty.
“Well I’ll be sure to secure it better this time,” Marvel said, already wondering just how to prevent this from happening again.
“Yeah, be careful, Batman looked like he was ready to take the kid home with him,” Hal joked.
“Excuse me?” Marvel questioned.
“Bats was pretty impressed the kid was able to swipe the thing from you. If his other street kid sidekick hadn’t been standing right there, Bats probably woulda offered him a job right then and there,” Hal said with a laugh and a wave as he wandered off. Marvel just stood there wondering how close he got to having Wayne added to his name. This secret identity stuff really was getting to be a hassle.

French author Anatole France once said, “Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.”
This quote perfectly captures the essence of “Paws for a Purpose: A Path to Warmth and Comfort,” held on November 20, 2024.
Organized by the UPLB CDC Student Council, the event featured Joshua Michael G. Jonas, a University Research Associate from the LRC-OVCSA and a passionate advocate of the UPLB BARKada and CATropa initiative—a school-based program we previously collaborated with in DEVC 126. Accompanying him was his beloved PAWtner, Sylvie, whose calm and affectionate presence became the heart of the event. Together, they introduced the UPLB Animal-Assisted Intervention (AAI) Program, a thoughtful initiative aimed at providing students with emotional and social support through animal companionship.
Listening to Mr. Jonas’ discussion about how the AAI Program aligns with the university’s commitment to promoting mental well-being was truly enlightening. It made me realize how Sylvie ideally embodied the program’s purpose, radiating joy and comfort to everyone present. His gentle presence reminded us of the profound role animals could play in easing burdens and fostering meaningful connections, even during the most stressful times.
This event was more than just an informative session—it became a sanctuary for us students, to pause, reflect, and recharge. Amid looming deadlines and academic pressures, it served as a timely reminder of the healing power of small acts of care, such as spending time with animals.
As the semester draws to an end, Anatole France’s words take on even deeper significance. Animals like Sylvie awaken parts of our souls, bringing peace, healing, and a renewed sense of connection.
The AAI Program exemplifies this truth, fostering a community of care and compassion when it is needed most.
