Theatre in India began as a narrative art form, which encompassed a concoction of music, dance and acting. Recitation, dance and music were integral parts of theatre. The Sanskrit word ‘Nataka’ was derived from the root word ‘Nata’ which actually meant a dancer. Rupaka, Drishyakvya and Preksakavya were others also used to describe drama. In ancient India, plays were generally of two types- 1) Lokadharmi (daily life) 2) Natyadharmi (narration and symbolism) Many types of plays are— Shakuntalam, Mudarakshasa, Ankita Nat, Kala, Ramlila, Raslila, Bhuta, Ramman, Bhavai, Daskathia, Garodas, Jatra,Kariyila, Maach, Nautanki, Oja-Pali, Powada, Swang, Tamasha, Villupattu, Bhand Pather, Bhaona, Dashavatar, Bhand, Burra katha, Bayalata, kuruvanji.
