Airline will have to pay Rs 10,000 fine if boarding is denied on valid ticket: DGCA

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on June 14 said that if a passenger holding a valid ticket is denied boarding, the airline will have to pay a compensation of upto Rs 10,000 to the traveller, if the airline is not able to arrange an alternate flight for the said passenger within an hour.

As part of its new guidelines, India's aviation regulator said that in the case of denied boarding to a passenger holding a valid ticket and having presented on time, airlines will have to pay a compensation of Rs 10,000, if alternate arrangement is made by the airline within next 24 hours.

Couple who got married mid-air is now to receive DGCA wrath for not following COVID protocol

The couple in Madurai that got hitched mid-air with 130 baraatis on board have invited regulatory action for themselves.

For the uninitiated, a SpiceJet flight took off from Madurai on Sunday morning and a couple on board got married while the flight was mid-air. The plane was air borne for more than two hours and was hovering over the revered Meenakshi Amman temple. During this time, all the marriage rituals were completed and the couple was announced man and wife before the flight returned to Madurai.

However, the flight as well as the baraatis are now at a receiving end for legal violation of the COVID-19 protocol.

As per a senior Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) official, “(The airline) crew has been off rostered (taken off duty). The airline has been directed to lodge complaints against those not following covid appropriate behavior with relevant authorities.

The airline has released a statement saying that a Boeing 737 was booked by a travel agent for a ‘post wedding joyous ride” and the guests to get on board were briefed on the COVID-19 protocol which were to be followed all the time. The airline also said that there was no permission granted for any type of activities on the flight.

“The approval for this flight was taken as a joy ride for the wedding group. The agent and guest passengers were briefed in detail, both in writing as well as verbally, on social distancing and safety norms to be followed as per Covid guidelines both at the airport and onboard the aircraft throughout the journey. The group was repeatedly briefed on the safety norms to be followed by the operating cabin crew and advised to follow the protocols laid down by DGCA including restrictions on photography and videography. Despite repeated requests and reminders the passengers did not follow Covid guidelines and the airline is taking appropriate action as per rules,” said a SpiceJet spokesman.
