Raw Crystals vs Tumbled Stones: Know The Difference And Pick The Best!
The only significant difference between raw crystals and tumbled stones is that tumbled stones are the flawless, gleaming version of Raw Crystals that you frequently find in healing jewellery and decorative items.
Tumbled stones are also much easier to display as ornaments or decorative items because they have been polished and crafted into lovely bright little gems. These crystals have preserved healing powers that are just as advantageous as raw crystals, despite being altered and refined.
Tumblr media
Raw Crystals
After being retrieved from the earth, raw crystals frequently lack a flawless appearance. They resemble rocks, have jagged edges, and hardly have any sheen. Natural healing crystals have potent healing properties, affect one's point of view, infuse one with positive energies, and re-establish your connection to nature.
Tumbled Stones
On the contrary, unrefined rocks that have just been dug up from the ground are tumbled stones. These stones have been polished by a rock tumbler machine to render them smooth and shiny and to give them a more rounded shape. Stones tumbled are frequently used as gifts, jewellery, or lucky charms.
Here are some concepts for applying tumbled stones.
Lucky Stones!
People who enjoy crystals frequently carry lucky stone blocks in their wallets for good luck. Larger stones are preferable because legend shows that those who take them around will be surprised and blessed.
Artwork Pieces
Tumbled stones, for instance, are a great way to add details to your artwork. The arts are a freeing way to express oneself. You can create three-dimensional paintings with tiny stones cut out in various distinctive shapes. Tumbled stone 3D paintings are simple to make, especially when using stones with vivid colours like red and yellow jasper, sapphire, gemstone, green azurite, and others.
Ornaments and Decorations
If you enjoy the holiday season, there are many inventive ways to decorate your home with tumbled stones. The vibrantly coloured tumbled stones can be used to make holiday ornaments. They can quickly add colour to your pre-made Christmas ornaments, cards, and other items.
You can still use your priceless tumbled stones for some projects even after the holidays. Examples of stones that work well as picture frames or wall accents include Orange Quartz, Carnelian, Yellow Quartz, and Amethyst.
Ground or Planter Covers
You can also use your tumbled stones as ground or planter covers if you run out of creative ideas by letting them lay around. You can scatter the stones to cover the soil in any large plants you have at home that might benefit from an upgrade. Every time you water your plants, it acts as a shield to stop erosion. Additionally, it improves the appearance of your plants.
Healing Jewelry
Making jewellery can be especially exciting when precious stones are involved. Making keychains, earrings, rings, necklaces, and pendants with crystals can be a fulfilling hobby. These jewellery pieces make excellent gifts for friends and coworkers and for personal use as healing stones.
There is frequent discussion about whether the healing abilities of tumbled stones and raw crystals have changed. Raw crystals are thought to be more potent because they are unprocessed and unchanged. Still, others contend there is no difference because both are of the same constituents.
There is no incorrect way to use them, even though there is a current debate on the subject. Why not visit Celestial Treasures, purchase a pair of your preferred tumbled stones, and make your determination? It will undoubtedly be amazing!

Creating Eye-Catching Address Sign To Help Your Business Stand Out
Tumblr media
An attractive address sign makes it easy to find your business. It will assure customers of its location. Most address signs are large, illuminated, and made of cut stone or channel lettering. Besides being easy to see, and address sign should also be readable. To make it more readable, the lettering and background color should be contrasted. You can use a bright color on a dark background to create the same effect.
The height of the lettering is important. For example, a sign with ten-inch-high letters would have the most impact at a 100-foot distance. However, you have to balance the size of the letters with the readability at a distance. For the name of your business, you must choose a font that is consistent and legible. For a home business, a dimensional-letter sign will make your address look larger than smaller lettering.
Adding a house number plaque is an elegant way to attract customers. It can double as a wall-mounted planter. The letter height of the sign should be appropriate for its location. While choosing a font, keep in mind its size and weight. A ten-inch-high sign would be most impactful at a hundred-foot distance. The font used for the name of your business should be uniform.
A well-designed address plaque is a practical way to promote your home. It doubles as a wall-mounted planter, and it also serves as an address plaque. This sign can be mounted under a sconce to make your numbers stand out more effectively. The sconces can be located in various locations, which makes them more visible and easy to spot. You can mount it beneath an existing wall.
For a house number plaque, choose a color that matches the exterior of the house. Wooden plaques, on the other hand, look elegant and add a touch of elegance to the home. The right sign is an effective way to attract customers. Attractive signs will attract customers and increase the appeal of your home or business. If you're looking for a unique and stylish address plaque, they can help you create an attractive sign.
You can also consider installing a house number plaque on the exterior of your home. A house number plaque with a unique design can double as a planter. If you have a beautiful house, the house number will stand out among all other signs. Its placement on the wall will make it more visible and will help guests find your home after dark. For a business, the place number will give it a special touch, and it will give it the perfect entrance.
An attractive address sign is a great way to attract customers. Using durable dimensional letters will ensure that your sign will last for years. You can also use a wooden or stone dimensional letter sign on your storefront. The wood signs are very popular, as they look traditional and convey a rustic feel. Regardless of the type of business you have, they will be easy to spot.
Another option is to install a house number plaque in the front yard. Creating a beautiful address plaque will make your home stand out. A house number plaque can double as a planter or wall-mounted sign. A flush-mount house number is also an excellent idea. A distinctions(TM) domed four-inch-high number will stand out even more on your green address plaque.

How to Build a Raised Garden Bed: Best Kits and DIY Plans
So you want to build raised garden beds and you’re wondering which system is best for you. Should you go with a pre-fab kit or start from scratch? Here’s what you need to know.
There’s no question that raised beds are popular for a reason. Not only do they look stunning in a backyard garden, they also ease the workload that comes with maintaining traditional, in-ground beds. Unfortunately some raised bed systems are costly to buy and time consuming to install. But not all raised bed systems are the same.
You're reading: How to Build a Raised Garden Bed: Best Kits and DIY Plans
Whether you’re handy with tools or don’t know a drill press from a driver, there are kits on the market that are easy to build with little time or expense. There are also do-it-yourself options if you have the time or the inclination.
So why should you bother assembling or building a raised bed garden?
Benefits of raised bed gardening
There are a lot of great reasons to build raised beds that contain and protect your garden soil.
Less tilling
Raised garden beds require less tilling than traditional, in-ground beds. Instead of digging up a compacted bed year after year, many gardeners add compost and other soil amendments to the top of their elevated beds in fall, then let nature do the rest over the dormant season. This is a good practice for both soil and plants.
Easier on your back
Bending, stooping, and kneeling can all take its toll on your back and joints. Raised bed designs come in a variety of heights to make reaching your crops less stressful on your body over time.
Nice to look at
In the backyard or the front, a series of raised planters surrounded by paths looks neat and well tended all year round.
Controls weeds and keep out critters
Raised garden boxes are known to deter rabbits, which will handily nibble in-ground crops growing at eye level. They also make it easy to install copper slug ‘fencing’ and other deterrents around the perimeter. Raising your beds also means moving crops away from dogs that may otherwise (ahem) urinate on your garden. If you have weed problems, you can install a weed barrier beneath your bed’s soil at installation time to ensure invasive weeds or tree roots don’t invade the bed.
Improves drainage
If your garden soil is normally wet into springtime, elevated beds solve this problem by lifting the soil above ground level and giving your plant roots room to breathe.
Offers a head start on the growing season
Raised beds filled with nutrient rich, organic soil warm faster in spring due to their elevation away from the cold ground—and their improved drainage. In this way, beds built 12 inches deep or more have the added benefit of giving plants a longer growing season.
For more benefits, see 10 Reasons to Add Raised Garden Beds to Your Garden.
Pre-fab raised garden bed kits
If you don’t have the time or resources to muster the raw materials for building a raised garden bed from scratch, you can purchase one of the easy-to-assemble kits on the market. In this case, your first consideration should be the type of materials available and how quickly and easily they go together.
Natural wood
Some of the least expensive kits are made from raw, natural wood or wood treated with natural wood stabilizers. (Avoid pressure treated lumber.) Cedar is the most common wood used for raised beds because of its durability and resistance to rot. It’s also lighter to handle than many other woods. Two cedar boxed garden systems that assemble in minutes are detailed below.
Read more: Rainbow Star
Farm Style Raised Garden Beds
These easy-to-assemble beds are made from Vermont white cedar. Stack them together in minutes without tools, fill with soil, and your garden is ready to go. They will last for many years and weather to a soft, silver grey.
Natural Cedar Beds
Like the kit above, these beds are made from natural cedar and assemble in minutes without tools (unless you opt for the version that includes trim). The main difference is that the boards in this system are Oregon incense cedar treated with a natural silica-based stabilizer. Both kits come in a variety of sizes and shapes.
Composite lumber
Next in terms of price are kits made from a blend of hardwood fibers and post-consumer recycled plastic. Approved for organic growing, these kits are durable, light, long lasting, and easy to assemble. They also resemble natural grain wood in color and texture. The reason they cost a little more? Wood composite is warp resistant and maintenance free. They will look the same for years without interventions.
Composite Raised Garden Bed
This composite bed takes about thirty minutes to put together. Assembly involves sliding each timber into a joint and fastening with zinc-plated screws (provided with the kit). The joints each have stake that needs pressing into the ground.
Recycled plastic
The final type of raised garden kit on the market is made from recycled plastic. These kits are the longest lasting and share the same low maintenance features as the composite lumber beds above.
Recycled Plastic Raised Garden Beds
These beds are made from 100% HDPE (high density polyethylene) plastic, the same material that you find in high quality garden furniture and public picnic tables. They are easy to assemble in about 20 minutes and don’t require any tools to put together. They’re also available in five colors, which means you can match them to your backyard décor for a seamless blend. Each non-toxic color includes UV protection to minimize fading over time. And speaking of time, these kits come with a 50 year warranty, which is pretty hard to match.
While there is no clear winner in terms of materials, wood beds biodegrade at the end of their lifespan, meaning no waste gets left behind. That biodegradable capacity means they won’t last as long as synthetic materials, however, so if durability is your goal, a composite or recycled plastic bed is a good alternative option.
For more discussion about the merits of different raised bed materials, read our article Cedar vs. Recycled Plastic vs. Composite Raised Garden Beds
DIY home-built raised beds
Building your own elevated garden boxes is a straightforward project for anyone with access to materials, along with the space and skill to fashion the parts. Here are some things to consider before you build your own raised beds.
Best wood choices
As noted above, cedar is one of the most rot resistant woods available. It’s also lightweight enough to handle for one person if dried thoroughly. Other options include black locust and redwood. If these are too expensive in your area, consider using fir or spruce, with the understanding that they will not last as long. You can also ask your local lumberyard what they recommend. Recycled boards repurposed from other projects are another lower cost option, as long as they aren’t treated. Avoid pressure treated wood and pressure treated lumber.
Use standard sizes, starting with 2 x 6 for the most basic bed with good soil underneath, all the way up to 2 x 12 if you need a taller bed for plants with deeper roots. You can also stack your lumber in tiers.
In general, most garden vegetables need 12 – 24” of soil depth to grow, with a few others needing as much as 36” of depth. (For the needs of specific garden crops, see our table of soil depth requirements.) If you have 12” of usable soil beneath your bed, build up another 12-24” to accommodate the crops on your list.
To stain or not to stain
The woods listed above will last a long time (10-20 years depending on your climate), but they will biodegrade eventually. To slow this process, you can treat your boards before building your beds, but be sure to use a non-toxic wood treatment that won’t leach harmful chemicals into your soil—and potentially your plants. Avoid buying pressure-treated or stained wood, unless it’s specifically designed for using in and around garden beds.
Hardware and other materials
Many screws are made from metal that will leach a dark stain onto wood when exposed to moisture. To avoid this, use coated deck screws or stainless steel. Pre-drill all holes to prevent your wood from splitting.
Simplest raised bed corners
To simplify the job even further, you can purchase pre-made anchor joints for your garden box corners. These brackets feature an 11.5” stake that can be hammered into the ground, making fastening your corners a breeze.
Stacking brackets also exist for the upper levels of tiered beds.
Bracing your beds with crossbeams
For beds longer than 8’, we recommend installing cross supports to prevent bowing outwards from the weight of your soil. Use ½” aluminum flat stock cut to match the inside width of your bed.
Read more: Deer
Building raised beds from alternative materials
Concrete blocks, bathtubs, metal feed troughs and even old canoes can all work for instant raised garden beds. Just be sure your creative choices don’t expose your soil and plants to toxic chemicals from paints, stains, or other finishes.
Simplest DIY raised garden bed design and instructions
The following instructions demonstrate how to make a simple raised bed with basic materials. This is the design our founder and his family have used in their garden for over 40 years.
The plans make one 4 x 8’ raised garden bed. You can extend the length to fit your space, but if your bed is going to be longer than 8’, you’ll need to add extra posts mid-span to prevent bowing and to provide a place to secure cross supports. See note above about bracing your beds with crossbeams.
To further strengthen your bed, consider using full dimension lumber, also known as “nominal” lumber. This is lumber cut to the full two inches thick and (in this case) six inches wide, instead of the standard cut you will get if you purchase from a commercial supplier (which will be slightly smaller due to shrinkage and planing). You can buy dimensional or nominal lumber from a local mill.
If you’re building on a slope, see our article about How to Build a Raised Garden Bed on Sloping, Uneven Ground.
Materials needed:
Four 8’ 2 x 6″ cedar boards Four 4’ 2 x 6″ cedar boards Four lengths of 4 x 4″ lumber, cut about 15” long, for corner posts 16-24 coated deck screws, size 3.5”#10
Tools needed:
Hand saw Carpenter’s square Level Drill Driver
How to build Your bed
After leveling and clearing the area where your bed will be located, lay out the bottom tier of your beds using two 4’ 2 x 6s, two 8’ 2 x 6s, and your four corner posts. It’s not necessary to cover the ground with landscaping fabric.
Starting with first corner, attach frame to corner post using two screws per side, leveling as you go. Continue with remaining three sides until you have one complete row.
Add the next row of 2 x 6’ boards, screwing to the corner posts as above. Level the entire bed. You may have to dig in places to get your bed to level.
Cut off corner posts flush with top of frame. Smooth ground around bed and fill bed with soil. Now you’re ready to plant!
DIY or kit: which type of raised garden bed is best?
When should I use DIY?
When you have the time and skill to make your own, DIY raised garden beds are often the most economical choice. And while pre-fab kits come in a variety of sizes, you can make DIY beds to fit tricky spaces and unusual depths.
When should I use a pre-fab kit?
If you need your bed to go together quickly, if you don’t have the tools or space to make your own, or if you need a long-lasting plastic or composite system that’s easy to clean and move, a pre-fab kit is the better choice for your situation.
Getting the most from your raised bed garden
Whatever you choose, raised gardens are a satisfying way to grow your own food without the strain and stress on your body. Here are some other tips to remember when using your beds.
Fill your beds with the best soil possible. Avoid buying topsoil, since it usually lacks the nutrients and structure needed for gardening. Instead, look for soil labeled “triple mix” (a mix of topsoil, rotted compost, and peat moss) or garden soil. And beware of adding anything to your beds that may contain weed seeds (unprocessed manure, unfinished compost, etc.) It’s not necessary to use landscaping fabric at the bottom of your bed.
If the ground beneath your bed has never been used for gardening, you can prepare it by turning over to a depth of about 16 inches deep. This will create better conditions for plant roots that need extra depth to grow.
If you live in an area where burrowing pests are a problem, add a layer of hardware cloth (or another fine metal mesh) across the bottom of your garden bed and about 3” up the insides. If other pests affect your area, read How to Keep Animal Pests Out of Your Garden.
Avoid compacting your soil once it’s in place. Stepping on the soil will compress the air pockets needed for plant roots to take up water and nutrients. Instead, use a spanner board (a board that spans your bed from edge to edge) if you need to cross. In general, beds that are no more than 4’ across are usually easiest to access.

Sharing a post from US Embassy Vientiane Showing more of the artwork that we created including wire mash two and three dimensional clay art pieces with mixed media materials including Paeper, Clay, Leier, BEADS and Moore. Please two dimensional pieces were part of an art exhibition that we had at Luang Prabang Library. 20 fine arts students from the Local’s fine arts college participated and were awarded certificates at the end of the closing ceremony. We all made clay beads, wire necklaces, and two dimensional and three dimensional pieces also involving recycling plastic bottles and creating sculptures with them. The bottles were made into flowers and in this case a pig, which became a planter so it was cut on the side and water and plants inserted. This is a great way to make sustainable art out of recycled one time use plastic. #michelebenjamin #jewelry #vientiane #luangprabang #art #exchangeourworld (at Luang Prabang) https://www.instagram.com/p/BypdlGGFvGl/?igshid=1opx4zlxrqldz

Black & White Interior Design Ideas
Hello, my dear friends! How are you today? I hope you’re feeling healthy and things are going well for you.
It’s really wonderful to start this new day sharing with this beautiful home with you. Honestly speaking, I work really hard to bring the best and the latest when it comes to interior design to all of you, and I want you to know how much I appreciate your daily presence on Home Bunch. You guys keep inspiring me!
Now, let’s talk about this gorgeous place!
Tumblr media
Recently built by Timber Trails Development Company and with interiors by Julie Howard (previously featured here, here, here & here), this home features so many fresh ideas that I am sure you will leave the post feeling inspired.
Here, the interior designer shares more about this newly-built home: “The Andover at Timber Trails is a sophisticated and chic farmhouse. One might think those two looks wouldn’t meld well together but the Andover bucks conventional wisdom. Starting with the exterior we traded the traditional white and black farmhouse for a dark grey facade. We love how it pops off the white trim. The stone work elevates the design and grounds the house at the same time. Inside we went with a white and black design warmed up with brass, natural wood, and hints of mossy green. We hope you enjoy this tour of the house we built to showcase creative and awe-inspiring design.” – Julie Howard, In-house designer for Timber Trails Development Company.
Pin your favorite interior design ideas and have a good time, everyone!

Walk-in
A walk-in pantry is located on the right.
Two-toned Kitchen
The kitchen epitomizes sophisticated and chic farmhouse. The hood is the focal point as you walk into the kitchen.
Kitchen Peninsula
We used a cement tile on the back of the kitchen peninsula. We then used a Caesarstone waterfall to cap the open edge. We love the detail this provides and as a mom, I love the idea of wiping down the dirt that always seems to be where little feet kick. It was a really simple tile project because there isn’t a window or outlet to have to cut around. It’s a flat, plain wall. If you get sick of the tile pattern, it would be so simple just to tile right over the area with another tile.
Cement Tile: Overstock – similar here.
Vertical
The vertical shiplap along side the elegant fixtures and brass hardware is unexpected but somehow works so beautifully together.
Kitchen sconces are Visual Comfort.
Kitchen Hood
By painting the hood white it blends in to the white walls but at the same time stands out from the rest of the black cabinetry. Hood is painted in Benjamin Moore Simply White.
Countertop
Countertop is Caesarstone Statuario Nuvo.
Paint Color
Trim Color – Benjamin Moore’s Simply White.
Rug
Rug in kitchen – ALL TIME FAVORITE! – best investment ever! Rejuvenation 5×8. – Julie Howard (interior designer).

Dishwasher: Whirlpool – I actually have this dishwasher at home and I love it! It’s super quiet and cleans really well.

Mirrors
I knew I wanted to have dramatic mirrors that brought your eyes up to a beautiful chandelier. I could not find simple, mid-century style mirrors that were really tall. I decided to use my greatest asset – my trim carpenter. He actually used a sheet of MDF, and some 1x4s cut in half to create the mirror frames. Then we had our painter spray them black when he was spraying the interior doors. After we installed the frames on the wall, the mirror company measured and installed a custom mirror. This project allowed us to create framed mirrors that were the absolute perfect size for the space. I will certainly use this technique again for sure!

TAZ, 2.8k. cw: allusions to major character death.
Julia leaves Raven’s Roost, not because she has to leave but because she knows she can’t stay anymore. (Or: Julia survives. Magnus doesn't.)
[Read on Ao3]
#
5.
“Based on your requests,” Hurley says, and tosses the first box over. Julia catches it reflexively and glances up at Hurley, who gestures at her to open it. She can feel Taako and Merle watching her as she lifts the lid of the box.
The mask inside is a lioness’s head, snarling viciously, with cold yellow eyes. Julia pulls it over her head. It’s a snug fit, but it covers her face, and she feels sort of badass in it. She turns to Taako and Merle. “How do I look?”
“Terrifying,” Taako assures her, drumming his fingers on the handle of the Umbrastaff. Merle nods in agreement.
“It’s a good look,” Hurley says. “You look very threatening.”
“Perfect.”She tugs the mask back off and turns it in her hands so it’s facing her. “Thank you.”
She flicks her eyes back up to Hurley, who offers a lopsided smile. “I wouldn’t have picked you for a cat person.”
Julia laughs aloud, trailing her fingers up the side of the lion’s muzzle. “I wasn’t for the longest time,” she says. “I used to want a dog. But times change.”
“Times change,” Hurley agrees, and throws the next box to Taako.
Julia closes her eyes for a second. If she thinks hard enough, she can still remember Magnus’s voice. He wanted a dog so badly, and she kept saying that they could get one as soon as things had settled in Raven’s Roost, as soon as they were sure they were safe. But he’d said the same things, time and again, please, Jules, we’ve got to get a dog, we have to--
They never got a dog.
Julia looks at the mask again. The lion is staring at her, still snarling, like it’s ready to pounce.
They’re going to win this race, she decides. Because she won’t let Hurley lose someone she loves so much.
 2.
She leaves Raven’s Roost in the middle of the night.
It’s not cowardly, she tells herself, over and over. She’s not leaving them to fend for themselves. Nobody knows where Cailen is. Nobody has seen him in weeks, not since--
It’s not cowardly, is the point, even though she feels like a coward. At least she’s not running because of the fight, and at least everyone she’s leaving will understand. She’s had visitor after visitor after visitor, leaving condolences heavy in the air but not heavy enough to stick. The house is too empty now, without anyone there building chairs or forging metal or laughing. She can’t stay there.
So she brings what she can and leaves the rest behind. She brings all the food that she can carry. She brings her sword, strapped to her back, and lets the weight of it keep her grounded. She brings a bracelet, one that’s tight around her wrist but that she’s had since she was twelve years old. She brings a wedding ring.
Julia leaves Raven’s Roost, not because she has to leave but because she knows she can’t stay anymore. She leaves in the middle of the night and forces herself not to turn back until she’s miles away. She turns, and she can’t see the outline of the town anymore, and it’s only then that she cries.
 3.
Work is hard to find, is the thing. It’s not impossible - plenty of people are looking for sellswords, and Julia isn’t above leveraging her folk hero status if it means being able to eat. People have heard about Raven’s Roost by now, about the couple that led the rebellion, about the widow. But she avoids using those stories when she can. She doesn’t need that pity.
Instead she works odd jobs, mostly as a bodyguard, and makes a reputation that way. Burnsides the bodyguard. Burnsides the protector. That’s the way it should be. She takes the jobs when they come to her, and then, one day:
“It says it’s the last job we’ll ever need to take.” Merle smooths the flyer out on the table and scoffs. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“It means after this I never have to work a day in my life again,” Taako says. “And I like that.”
“Me too,” Merle says. “But we can’t do it on our own.”
They turn to Julia then, in eerie, perfect unison. Neither of them say anything.
She doesn’t know either of them terribly well - Taako has a reputation from his show, and Merle has tried to hand her more Pan pamphlets than she can count - but she knows they won’t last long in a fight. They seem scrappy, sure, like they’d be fine in most cases, but Julia has been adventuring long enough to know that sometimes “you’ll never work again” means “you’ll die on this job.” And she likes Merle and Taako too much to let that happen.
“I’m in,” she decides.
Taako claps his hands together. “This is going to be great.”
 4.
The moon is less peaceful than Julia expected.
Or, no, that’s not fair to say. The moon itself is fine, but the Bureau isn’t particularly peaceful. At any given moment either something is on fire or Taako is planning something that’ll end with a fire, or Merle is arguing with someone. Most days Julia is there with them. Most days she’ll either help pick targets for Taako’s pranks or gang up with Merle to heckle someone, or even lead her own prank assault against the employees of the bureau.
But she makes an exception for today. Today is… something else.
It takes a lot of walking to find somewhere quiet, but she finds something that looks like it would’ve been a garden, with a little more love. There are terra cotta planters and stone benches, and she settles onto one bench, clutching her wedding ring in one hand.
Julia closes her eyes and tips her head back. Magnus would’ve liked it up here. Or maybe he’d only like it if she were there with him. Gods know she’d be happier if he were here to celebrate his own birthday, instead of leaving her alone. She’d been considering going back to Raven’s Roost for the first time in years, to see if anyone would celebrate her, but that’s not really an option anymore. She doesn’t have anyone to celebrate with.
She gives herself a full minute to mourn before she says, softly, “I know you followed me.”
“You’re more interesting than anyone else here,” Merle mutters. He plops down on the bench next to her and waits. She can feel his eyes on her, so after a few seconds she sighs and uncurls her fingers.
Merle leans in to inspect the ring. “Yours?”
“Yeah.” Julia sighs. “He would’ve been thirty-three today.”
“How old was he?”
“Not even thirty.”
“That sucks.”
“Yeah.” Julia opens her eyes. Her throat is thick. She’s just glad that he didn’t say he was sorry.
Merle is quiet for all of three seconds, and Julia can appreciate the peace. And then, for some godsdamned reason, he grabs a lock of Julia’s hair and tugs it. Hard.
Julia yelps and slaps his hand away. “Watch it, old man!”
“Your hair is almost as bad as Taako’s,” Merle announces.
“That’s bullshit, nobody’s hair is as bad as Taako’s. He doesn’t know what a brush is.”
“And when’s the last time you brushed your hair?”
Julia pauses. “It was definitely this month.”
Merle makes a disgusted noise. “This month, Pan’s sake, neither of you know how to take care of yourselves.”
“I’ve been on the road for a while!”
“Yeah, and you’re a mess.”
“Well, what are you going to do about it?”
Julia has exactly two seconds to realize that this might be something she shouldn’t challenge Merle on - as earthy as he is, he’s always well-groomed, and he re-braids his beard every morning - before he jumps to his feet. “That’s it, I’m cutting your hair.”
“You’re what?”
“Yours and Taako’s both, come on.”
“Merle, this is ridiculous, I don’t need a haircut.”
Merle glares at her. “How’re you going to stop me?”
“Uh, I have a sword.”
“And I have spells.”
Julia raises her best skeptical eyebrow.
Merle crosses his arms. “And a warhammer.”
“I’m not letting you anywhere near my hair without a damn good reason.”
“If you let me cut your hair then I’ll let you help me cut Taako’s.”
“Deal,” Julia says instantly, because Taako’s hair is a rat’s nest, and that’s a sacrifice worth making. “Wait, can you cut hair?”
“I have cut hair before.”
“That’s not a yes.”
Merle waves her off. “Don’t worry, you’re in good hands.”
Julia thinks about it for a second. It’s been a few long years since she had someone who would cut her hair for her just because they cared. And the worst thing that could happen is she has to wear hats for a few months. Not a real problem.
She slips her wedding ring back onto her finger. Merle motions at her expectantly, and she gets to her feet. “I’m trusting you on this.”
“Big mistake,” Merle snorts, but he still looks pleased.
 6.
“Kravitz,” Julia says, before she can stop herself.
Kravitz turns to look back at her, looking confused, but Julia doesn’t let herself waver. This is her chance. Maybe her only chance.
Her voice breaks, but she says, “Tell Dad I miss him. And tell Mags I love him.”
“Mags could be short for a lot of things, you know, and there are a lot of dads,” Kravitz starts, but something on Julia’s face must show that she’s not in the mood for any jokes, because he drops it immediately. “I know who you mean. I’ll tell them.”
“Thank you,” Julia says quietly. She knows Taako and Merle are staring, but she can’t bring herself to care. “Thank you.”
Kravitz steps through a rift in dimensional space and vanishes. The world shimmers and reforms behind him. Julia’s husband is somewhere on the other side of that gap. His soul is still intact. That’s the best news she’s gotten all day.
 1.
The courier arrives three days after Magnus leaves for Neverwinter. He’s going for a carpentry competition, with a couple of friends and with Julia’s father. She doesn’t think anything of it. They should be safe. Everything should be safe.
Julia opens the door and sees someone she doesn’t recognize, stony-faced and watery-eyed, holding his hat in his hands. “How can I help you?”
“Julia Burnsides?”
“That’s me.”
The courier takes a deep breath, shoulders trembling. “Governor Cailen,” he starts, and Julia knows instantly.
She grabs the doorframe, digging her fingers into the wood. “My father,” she says, but her voice sounds like it’s coming from far away. “My husband?”
The courier shakes his head. Julia falls to her knees.
 7.
Magnus looks up as past-Julia comes into his workshop. His face lights up as soon as he sees her, radiating warmth, love, life, and Julia crumples to the floor.
She remembers every second of the day, but she makes a point not to think about it. She can’t stand to watch it happen in front of her. She doesn’t want to see a version of herself that’s younger, less scarred, not yet a widow. But she can hear her own voice laughing, and Magnus’s, and then her father’s, and she’s sobbing before she can help herself.
It’s funny, almost, all the details that she forgot. Magnus has a mole on his chin, barely darker than the rest of his skin. Her father’s hands are more wrinkled than she remembered. She wants to reach out to them, to say hello. To say goodbye.
“Why,” she says, when she catches her breath enough to look up. The scene is paused now. Magnus is inches away from kissing past-Julia. Both of them are smiling, caught up in each other’s presence. Dad is behind Magnus, smiling broadly, looking proud. None of them know that Cailen is riding out from Neverwinter, ready to take revenge upon the man who took Raven’s Roost from him. None of them know that this is the last time they’ll all be together.
“You feel guilty,” June says. Julia would turn to face her, but she can’t look away. “You feel like it’s your fault.”
“Magnus led the rebellion, but I planned it.” Julia takes a deep, shuddering breath. “We did it together. It shouldn’t have been him. It certainly shouldn’t have been both of them.”
“You left for revenge.”
“I left because I couldn’t live in a house where all three of us should’ve been living together.”
“But you looked for Cailen.”
Julia laughs, briefly, mirthlessly. “Of course I looked for Cailen. He killed my family. I lost friends in the rebellion. I’d rip his fucking guts out if I ever saw him again.”
“What if you didn’t have to?”
Both of Magnus’s hands are tangled in past-Julia’s hair, pushing it back from her face. From this angle she can see the way she used to smile at him. She can see the person she used to be: not innocent, certainly, but not prepared for what she’s about to lose.
“Julia,” June says softly, “what if you could save them?”
 8.
Two days later, as the morning-hazy light makes its way into the reclaimers’ official blanket fort, Julia says, “What did it offer you guys?”
“My arm.” Merle scoffs. “Like I don’t already have two of those.”
“The tree arm is cooler anyways,” Julia agrees.
“I’m glad you think so, because it’s your fault-”
“It’s not my fault, you were going to lose it no matter what!”
“Merle, you’re still pretty even with the wood arm,” Taako says blandly.
Merle pokes his head out from underneath a stack of pillows to scowl at Taako. “I don’t need your shit, you know that?”
“But I’m here anyways, so I might as well give you shit.”
Merle harrumphs at him. “Fine, wise guy, what did the chalice offer you?”
“Doesn’t matter,” Taako says. “What happened wasn’t my fault.”
“Yeah, but…” Julia pauses. They don’t do serious talks, the three of them, and this is the kind of question that she can’t un-ask, but she wants to know. “What wasn’t your fault?”
Taako waves a hand lazily in the air. “There was a whole thing with poison and people dying. I thought it was because of me, but it turns out it wasn’t.”
“Shit,” Julia says softly. As cavalier as he’s being, she can see how calculated the hand-wave is. Like he’s trying to act perfectly fine. This matters. “Someone else poisoned people?”
“Fuck that guy,” Merle says. “I’ll kick his ass.”
Taako snorts. “You could try. He’d eat you alive.”
“And Merle would give him indigestion,” Julia finishes.
“Yeah,” Merle agrees proudly.
“That’s sweet,” Taako says sardonically. “What about you, Jules, what horrors did you have to relive?”
Julia hesitates, but only for a second. “I saw my father. And my husband.”
The air changes in an instant. Merle and Taako don’t know anything about Magnus and her father as people, or about the rebellion, but they still know her loss. They know this is serious.
“The chalice told me I could save them,” Julia says. “I used to think I’d give anything for that chance, but…”
“But you wouldn’t give everything,” Taako finishes, a grim shade of understanding in his voice.
Julia nods silently. Magnus might be the love of her life, and her dad might be her hero, but neither of them would be happy if she unwound an entire reality to see them again.
“Shit,” Merle mutters. “Fuck that cup.”
“Fuck that cup!” Taako sits upright suddenly, and Julia turns to look at him. “We’ve made- listen, we’ve made a lot of mistakes.”
“This isn’t a good pep talk,” Julia says dryly, to cover up the tears welling in her eyes.
Taako waves her off. “But we already made those mistakes, and we don’t get to just… un-make them. Who is that cup to try and decide what we should do? We’re here, that’s what matters.”
Merle shoots Taako a bemused look. “I think that’s the most emotionally in-touch thing I’ve ever heard you say.”
“Oh, fuck you,” Taako says without heat, and flops back down onto the floor. “I’m just saying, as much stuff as we regret, the stuff after it was okay.”
“Yeah,” Julia says quietly. There are things she would do to get Magnus back, but she wouldn’t rip a world apart for him. She wouldn’t give up her two best friends for him. Magnus would understand. “You guys are okay.”

Chic Small Interiors That Make You Want To Live The Studio Life
You might think that a big house would be the most aspirational but these chic small spaces really reboot the dimensional mindset. These four high-end, style abundant apartments have given us a real case of studio envy. Small yet perfectly formed, these upmarket places have everything the heart desires in terms of modern home comforts and deliciously luxe aesthetics. Made-to-measure elements ensure that everything just flows and satisfyingly fits every last nook. Rich wooden accents and dark notes bring soothing warmth and weight to the palette of each modestly sized interior. The tonal combination creates a look of confidence, edge, and utmost sophistication.
Visualizer: Michael K   This studio apartment is separated into two distinct halves with the introduction of a decorative screen. The screen extends between the foot of the bed and the back of a loveseat on the other side. Looks like the owner might have trouble getting a seat though–might be time to invest in some cat furniture!
The geometric Muxarabi screen allows shared light between the two different zones, whilst building privacy and definition.
The couch looks onto a kitchen dining area with a mid century modern style  round dining table.
An understated dining pendant light shines upon a solid black decorative vase on the tabletop. The dark addition helps link the light wood table in with a set of dark dining chairs.
The kitchen itself is a rich wood finish with modern framing detail. The integrated oven carries the black accent theme through from the adjacent dining area and the black sofa.
The style of vanity chair in the bedroom is sparked from the same line as the dining room chairs. The bedroom storage is a continuation of the wooden kitchen cabinet aesthetic. These visual links create sleek cohesivity across the small living space.
A soft grey platform bed rings the changes in the decor palette.
A unique wooden bedside table flanks each side of the upholstered bed. Black table tops tie in with monochrome throw pillows and sheets.
To make up for the lack of TV space in the living room, a large wall mounted television resides on the bedroom side of the decorative dividing screen.
A piece of the Muxarabi has been utilised as an attractive backdrop behind a simple vanity mirror.
Architect: Kseniia Tkachenko   The next studio apartment, located in Zaporozhye, Ukraine, has an area of 51 square metres. A chic modern sofa extends in front of an elegant shelving unit, filled to its top with decorative items and books. Nesting coffee tables build height in the front of the lounge arrangement.
A slatted screen separates the sleep zone from the lounge area in this studio, along with a split level floor device.
Behind the slatted screen, a floor bed design is turned to face toward the view. The large window brings in cloudscapes and nature at first light.
A breakfast bar is built around a partial dividing wall between the bedroom and the kitchen. Attention grabbing stools bring in a flash of satisfying colour and a tactile element.
The surrounding L-shaped kitchen is a white slab front design with dark accents.
A minimalist cooker hood complements the clean white kitchen aesthetic.
A modern toilet and hand basin model matching silhouettes in the bathroom.
Slatted accent walls play with the sense of scale.
The tap above the bathroom sink extends directly out of the mirror for a streamlined finish.
Storage units line the hallway.
Purple poufs add a hit of unexpected colour.
Visualizer: Lia Zavoloka   The next studio home has a calming essence, sprung from a white and light wood tone palette.
A cane hanging chair casts shadows across a pale chevron floor and a round jute rug.
The modern sofa cuts off a dining kitchen, forming individual zoning.
A textured white pouf cosies up alongside the swing chair.
Wood cladding wraps a closet volume between the home entryway and the bed.
Wooden kitchen bar stools bring the natural element to the white kitchen.
A brass pendant light and tap add elements of warmth and lustre to the ice white kitchen.
Smooth white marble is featured in both the kitchen and the bathroom, though inside the bathroom the fixtures and fittings contrast in striking matt black.
Designer: Zrobym   Our last tour takes us inside of a 45 square metre studio, located in Minsk, Belarus. Seductive lighting and textiles characterise the space.
A floor bed is raised onto an elevated platform, accessible via steps with integrated storage. The bespoke piece gives the studio a sense of grandeur.
On the other side of the room, a gaming chair pulls up to a custom desk design.
The hero piece of this stunning studio home is a slatted arch feature that visually divides the kitchen from the lounge.
LED strips have been slotted between the undulating slats to build an ultra modern and captivating effect.
The kitchen itself is a good size, which is enhanced further by good natural lighting. White cabinets beneath the window exaggerate this sense of light and space, whilst darker units in the foreground set down a confident border.
Two bar stools look out of the kitchen, into the lounge.
Little terracotta pots live on the kitchen peninsula, vibing with the warmth of the rich wood facing. See some unique planters here.
The illuminated slatted arch rushes straight into the home entryway to create a dazzling first impression.
The same slatted wood colours the bathroom.

You're reading: The Best (and Weirdest) Things You Can Do with a Tree Stump
Once a mighty oak, this tree-stump-turned-gnome-home tops out at over 6 feet high and adds fanciful interest to a wooded backyard. Nestled in a bed of lush hostas, any self-respecting gnome would be lucky to call this stump home. A talented DIYer framed roof supports from 2x4s and used wood shims to craft rustic shingles. The windows are fashioned from plywood and adorned with cedar detailing and painted-on curtains that pull the look together.

A sturdy stump makes a perfect pedestal for a bird bath. Use the basin from a former bird bath, a shallow terra cotta dish, or any other heavy basin or bowl to create a water retreat for your feathered friends. Add stones or a small solar fountain, and you’ll soon have birds flocking to your yard. If the stump isn’t in a shady spot, surround the bird bath with tall plants to help keep it cool during the heat of the day.

Molded plastic footholds, climbing grips (available from retailers that sell playground accessories), and a large tree stump become a climbing wall for little hands and feet. Attach a safety fence, constructed from dimensional lumber, and bolt the slats securely to the sides of the tree. Create your own table for open-air dining! To start, ensure the surface of the stump is as flat as possible to give you a level base. When choosing your tabletop, consider materials that strike the right ambiance for your outdoor living space—salvaged wood for a rustic retreat, metal for a modern vibe or even a large concrete slab for no-nonsense fun. For stability, insert one or more large bolts through the top of the slab and into the stump. There you have it—a simple table, perfect for lazy weekend breakfasts!

The glass top from an old patio table, combined with a uniquely shaped tree stump, makes a great spot for outdoor dining. If you don’t already have a glass tabletop sitting around, you can have a piece of thick glass cut to a custom size and shape. If you go the custom route, make sure you’re using tempered glass, that way if the table ever breaks, you won’t have dangerously sharp glass pieces to pick up out of the grass.

A chainsaw in the hands of a talented sculptor can turn an ordinary tree stump into a work of art. This stump oozes whimsy and intrigue as two adorable bears peek out of their tree to watch passersby. Tree stump chainsaw sculptures should be periodically sealed (once every year) with a coat of clear marine varnish, or another penetrating exterior sealer, to keep them from splitting.

Nothing could be more natural than creating a flower bed in a carved out tree stump. If the center of the stump is already hollowed and rotted out, you’re in luck! Add soil and start planting. If the tree stump is still in tact, carve out a basin at least a few inches deep and fill it with quality garden soil. If the bottom of your new “pot” holds water, drill a couple of holes in the side of the trunk to allow for drainage.

Big Bench

The bigger the tree, the greater the possibilities! This bench, skillfully cut from a massive tree stump, offers woodland visitors a serene spot to stop and enjoy the scenery. A commercial chainsaw is your best bet for making both the initial top cut and also to remove the large front section of the stump. A smaller chainsaw can be used to sculpt away the interior wood to form the seat, back and sides.

Birds and trees—the original combination. A tall stump makes a natural base for a birdhouse or a bird feeder. Consider adding a wide plastic or metal baffle around the stump to discourage cats and squirrels from climbing up and reaching the feeder or birdhouse.

Art Deco Terms
Art Deco Terms
Acute Angles: Close relatives of the boomerang, acute angles were inspired by delta-winged military jets that broke speed records in the 1950s. Just as streamlining evoked mighty locomotives and nautical designs in the 1930s, the acute angle and the delta-wing shape became icons of speed in the post-war period. The motif was employed in two dimensions as a decorative element and to give buildings a dynamic, futuristic look.
Aggregate Stones: pebbles, or colored gravel in cement, left untreated for texture or polished mirror-smooth, used to surface walls, floors, and paving.
Aluminum: Postwar budgets and advanced engineering and construction methods allowed for the use of this wonder material with a high strength-to-weight ratio. Plate glasswindows and doors were trimmed in aluminum. Through the electrochemical process of anodizing, protective and decorative coatings were added. Gold anodized aluminum was often used in sun grilles.
Architecture Parlance: Architecture imbued with symbolism to communicate its function. Also known as programmatic architecture.
Asymmetry: In a clean break with the past, Modernism rejected Beaux Arts ideals of balance, symmetry, and hierarchy, which pervaded Art Deco design. Modern engineering made irrelevant the centuries-old reliance on Classical orders in aesthetic compositions and elevations. In plan, asymmetry expressed the American desire for informality and individuality.
Baroque: The lush ornamentation, lavish materials, and awe-inspiring interior space of late Renaissance architecture provided inspiration for architect Morris Lapidus and subsequently his colleagues in pursuit of Miami Beach pleasure domes.
Beanpoles: Debuted in the interiors of architect Morris Lapidus, thin metal rods used as decoration and for space modulation in interior and exterior spaces. They often projected from built-in plantersin all manner of balconies, lobbies, stairways, and porches.
Boomerangs: The boomerang shape, an aerodynamic curve with primitive connotations, became shorthand for speed. The boomerang’s nationwide popularity in the post-war era made it ubiquitous in MiMo, appearing in two- and three-dimensional forms in apartment buildings, supermarkets, and motels.
Boxed Windows: After World War II, Art Deco eyebrowswere elongated into both horizontal and vertical decorative elements, often framing compositions of windows and slump brickpanels. The boxes, or frames, were frequently flared or tapered for an aerodynamic effect.
Brise-Soleils: A fixed or movable device, such as fins or louvers, designed to block the direct entrance of sun rays into a building. Le Corbusier was the first to design these louvered screens as an integral part of a building, not only for climate control, but also to give depth and richness to the normally flat surface of the typical modern façade. The pattern of vertical and horizontal compartments creates a different set of rhythms from those produced by the alternation of wall and window which the brise-soleil conceals. In South Florida, brise-soleils were executed in masonry, metal, and even wood.
Built-In Planters: In Prairie houses, Frank Lloyd Wright often employed successively smaller planters at the bases of exterior walls and corners to anchor the structure to the landscape and create a graduation from the architectural to the natural.
Canted Windows: Extending beyond the typical Modernist use of glass, post-war architects often tilted glass walls outward from the base, usually seen in motel lobbies, storefronts, gas stations, and fast-food restaurants.
Cantilever: A beam or other projection that is unsupported at its projecting end. Cantilevering shows off structural innovation and contributes to asymmetrical design. In the International Style, cantilevering made possible projecting canopies and balconies, also called tray balconies. Shallow masonry cantilevers, a MiMo ornamental device, evolved from eyebrowstypical of 1930s Tropical Art Deco architecture.
Catwalks: A cost-saving device compared with enclosed corridors, exposed, cantileveredexterior corridors were a basic ingredient of two-story motels, residential apartment-motels, and schools throughout South Florida. Sometimes called galleries, the open-air passageways provided a greater sense of independence to individual units.
Chalet Style: A close cousin to the bold gables of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Prairie Style houses, the Swiss chalet style distilled the image of domesticity into a gabled front façade with a prominent, long-eaved roof. Multi-unit MiMo apartment-motels were often consolidated under a symbolic unifying gable roof, an expression of the American dream of a home of one’s own.
Cheese holes: Round holes of various sizes used in interior and exterior walls, which added visual interest in an organic and Modernist way.
Clerestories: Narrow window bands set close to the roofline that let in natural light and emphasize airy structural compositions. Clerestories were a common feature in Wrightian residences and were also adopted by MiMo architects for their Modernist appeal.
Compressed Arches: Vertically squeezed or horizontally squashed semicircular arches, forming roofs or canopies, were a popular device borrowed from Brazilian Modernism, which disapproved of emphasizing entryways.
Concrete Block and Stucco: Readily available, mass-produced concrete block became the standard South Florida building material from the 1920s onward. Stucco, an inexpensive fine plaster, was used to coat exterior block walls and was molded into decorative features. South Florida’s fantasy architecture from Mediterranean Revival to MiMo futurism was often simply stucco “icing” on a standard “cake” of concrete block. In MiMo architecture, stucco was molded into myriad abstract relief patterns to harness the abundant sunshine for ornamental effect.
Concrete Canopies: Thin concrete roofs, which often projected outward toward a driveway, street, or parking lot, were commonly used to shelter building entrances. Minimalist canopies with an uplifting sweep or jaunty zigzag celebrated arrival at elegant MiMo apartment buildings.
Crab Orchard Stone: Quarried in the Cumberland Plateau of eastern Tennessee, this hard sandstone became a defining decorative material in MiMo from the hotels of Miami Beach to the campus of the University of Miami. The popularity of the stone, which comes in shades of tan, buff, blue gray, and pink, was partly inspired by Wright’s reliance on natural materials in his domestic architecture. The use of natural stone in the rec room of the House of the Future at the 1939–40 New York World’s Fair strengthened the association of natural stone with leisure, informality, and the good life.
Curtain Wall Construction: A non-structural exterior wall, usually of plate glass, steel, or aluminum, hung on the structural frame. Developed in cool, cloudy Northern European climates, glass curtain walls required shading with grilles, screen block, and louversin South Florida.
Cut outs: The simple device of perforating eaves with circular or square openings hinted at the structural potential of modern materials and provided visual interest. Roof cutouts were usually paired with a corresponding planter to allow plants to grow through the openings. A palm tree piercing a perforated eave is a classic MiMo touch.
Decorative Railings: Railings along catwalksin motels and motel-apartments were frequently among the few opportunities for ornamentation, and appeared in imaginative, abstract geometric and curvilinear compositions. North Beach is particularly rich in decorative railings.
Delta Wings: Inspired by the advancement in aviation following World War II, the delta wing shape appeared in MiMo architecture as a whimsical design element. During the 1950s the delta wing was used on several aircraft to increase speed. When viewed from above, the delta wing shape resembles a triangle.
Egg crate Façades: The square or rectangular grid created by exposed edges of concrete floors and walls projecting outward from the building wall. Shallow modules provided shade to windows and a place to anchor brise-soleils, while deeper recesses are often used for terraces.
Exposed Concrete: In keeping with the Modernist tenet of the exterior expression of structure and materials, exposed concrete was used extensively by Le Corbusier, Oscar Niemeyer, and Marcel Breuer. The material was common in late MiMo, reaching high points in the Miami Marine Stadium and the Kendall campus of Miami-Dade College.
Eyebrows: An example of styling in MiMo architecture, cantileveredsunshades over individual windows and doors in 1930s Tropical Art Deco evolved into continuous, horizontal cantileversand vertical elements of varying depths.
Floating Planes: The concept of defining space with a hovering, seemingly immaterial appearance was made possible due to advancements in building materials. Reinforced concrete offered a homogenous coherence and horizontal spreads of considerable dimensions. This new architectural design technique was influenced by The De Stijl art movement and imitated the free-floating lines and planes of a Mondrian work. The first internationally recognized building which defined volume with the use of floating planes was the Barcelona Pavilion designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohefor the 1929 International Expositionin Barcelona, Spain. The use of floating planes was also embraced by Frank Lloyd Wright who influenced many architects following World War II who sought to create dramatic, monumental spaces.

Floating Staircases: Flights of stairs without risers or sideboards, often cantileveredfrom a wall so that the treads seem to float without support, embody the space-ageaspirations of the era and can be found in MiMo residences to offices.
Folded Planes: Inspired by the iconic roof of the U.S. Air Force Academy Chapel in Colorado Springs, Colorado, concrete planes, folded into origami-like configurations, create a wealth of light and shadow effects. Used as a purely ornamental device, folded planes appear in commercial MiMo architecture.
Hyperbolic Paraboloids: Square and circular planes were warped into eye-catching topical shapes. MiMo architects enthusiastically adopted the popular 1950s motif of acute hyperbolic parabolic curves, showcased in the extraordinary roof of the now-demolished Best Western Marina Inn and Yacht Harbor in Fort Lauderdale or the daringly engineered canopy of the demolished Diplomat Hotel in Hollywood, Florida.
Interior and Exterior Blending: Continuity of interior and exterior space is characteristic of Modernist design in all climes, but South Florida’s mild weather was especially conducive to the concept, most notably in the homes of Igor B. Polevitzky and the Coconut Grove School of architects (Alfred Browning Parker, Rufus Nims, Kenneth Treister, George Reed, et al.).
Interior Space Modulation: Modern construction and engineering freed architects from reliance on load-bearing walls, allowing for voluminous interiors unbounded by walls and traditional room proportions. Drawing on his expertise in store design, Morris Lapidus pioneered the use of multiple floor levels to create subtle spatial transitions in his hotel interiors. Other space modulation devices include tray ceilings, banks of beanpoles, cheeseholewalls, faux support columns, and ancillary enclosed volumes like reception desks and banks of elevators.
Intersecting Planes: The mastery of man over materials was celebrated with masonry, stone, and glass planes that magically seemed to intersect and interpenetrate, in canopies that penetrate glass lobby walls and entire façade compositions.
Jalousies: Operable, narrow glass louverswere ubiquitous before air-conditioning, because of their ability to maintain ventilation during rainy weather. Jalousies of frosted glass simultaneously provided privacy and were used in a full range of sizes from small bathroom windows to long, floor-to-ceiling arrangements. The West Laboratory School at the University of Miami was the acme of jalousie construction.
Keystone: A form of oolitic limestone, or oolite, quarried in Florida’s Middle Keys, hence its name. Readily available, easy to carve, and textured with fossilized sea life, Keystone was used extensively in Mediterranean Revival and Tropical Art Deco structures. It was used less frequently after the war, almost invariably in random ashlar. Miami oolite, which makes up the South Florida coastal ridge, is a softer, more porous type and is commonly given the misnomer coral rock.
Lettering: Certain typefaces on building signs, especially a round, upward-slanting script style, imparted a sense of carefree, casual 1950s living. Other motifs included sans serif letters, slanting italicized letters, and use of upper and lower cases.
Louvers: An assembly of angled, overlapping blades or slats, set vertically or horizontally, which may be fixed or adjustable. Originally louvers were designed for window and door openings to admit air and sunlight to varying degrees and to exclude rain. A common feature of Subtropical Modern homes, wooden louvers, modeled after the operable wooden louvers from Cuba known as persianas, very likely inspired jalousie windows. In Modern architecture, louvers became elaborate design elements in their own right. Fixed vertical louvers, in metal or masonry, were used to block direct sunlight and to create colonnade-like shadows, as in the Collins Avenue Façades of the Seville and Golden Sands hotels, and in Temple Menorah.

Marine Imagery: MiMo buildings continued the Tropical Art Deco tradition of depicting aquatic images but in more abstract forms, like the gradations of sea green mosaic tile representing the ocean’s depths on the façade of the Eden Roc hotel. Representations of sea life, such as mermaids, dolphins, sea horses, and seashells, were common in MiMo residences and grand resorts, as well as in MiMo motels especially in Fort Lauderdale.

Metal Grilles: Sometimes custom-made in an abundance of finely detailed designs, grilles were used in a similar manner as concrete brise-soleilsand louvers: to block sunlight. A ubiquitous feature of MiMo office buildings until they were made obsolete by reflective thermal glass, metal grilles were sometimes used simply for decorative effect.
Mosaic Tile: Glass tile, primarily from Italy, and ceramic tile rank with crab orchard stoneas a common MiMo decorative material. Mosaic tile made a splashy debut in the full-height panels on the façade of the Eden Roc hotel, and was later used to give color and sparkle to spandrels, public interior spaces, fountain basins, bathrooms, and other features.
Murals: Reflecting the popularity of the abstract, billboard-sized murals in Mexico City, large exterior murals appeared in and on MiMo architecture after 1960. The tile murals of the Bacardi USA building are one of the finest examples of Latin American influence on MiMo. At the Alexander condominium-hotel, Charles F. McKirahan employed a Polynesian-style full-height mural to give the narrow end of the building a strong presence on Collins Avenue.
Pedestal and Superstructure: Large Modernist buildings are often composed of a tower or superstructure atop a broad base. Pedestal-and-tower buildings were usually office buildings, but architects of resorts adapted the configuration, which was subsequently copied around the world and known as the Miami Beach hotel type. In resorts, the wide pedestal was appropriate for housing lobbies, ballrooms, and meeting halls.

Pilots: Another adaptation of the International Style, cylindrical concrete support columns that raised building masses above open ground levels and created areas of shade often used for parking.
Plate Glass: Thick sheets of high-quality glass were cast in broad plates and used in storefronts and hotel and motel lobbies. Steel-skeleton construction allowed for a generous use of glass, which became a hallmark of the International Style and a universal Modernist expression. In South Florida, a truly modern use of glass was not widely achievable until the MiMo period.

Populace: A term coined by the architectural critic Thomas Hine, referring to the flamboyant decorative style of the 1950s and 1960s, which employed bright colors and futuristic contours to impart a sense of luxury to mass-produced consumer items from appliances and cars to Miami Beach resorts.
Porte Cochere: In MiMo resorts, the driveway drop-off area becomes a dramatic ornamental device. In some hotel and even condominium exteriors, elaborate, fanciful porte cocheres were the only break from otherwise purely Modernist designs.
Proscenium: A façade frame which connects and projects above the roofline of two adjacent buildings.
Pylons: MiMo commercial and apartment buildings frequently employed vertical masonry panels as the centerpiece of a façade of intersecting planes and volumes. Pylons were also the preferred location for automobile-scale signage. Reflecting the popularity of Wright’s Fallingwater, pylons were often clad in crab orchard stoneor slump brick.
Random Ashlar Pattern: Paving or masonry consisting of stones cut into squares and rectangles of various sizes, or a faux version of this.
Ribbon Windows: Horizontal window bands were another earmark of the International Style, with its non-load-bearing walls. Ribbon windows appear in MiMo-style offices, hotels, and institutional buildings. Banded windows imparted a strong Modernist character to hotels like the Fontainebleau and were shaded with sun-protection devices in Subtropical Modernist buildings.
Roman Brick: Distinctively thinner and longer than conventional brick, roman brick was favored by Frank Lloyd Wright for its horizontality and fine texture, and became popular in the 1950s. Most roman brick in MiMo architecture is actually slump brick.
Rounded Eaves: An easily distinguishable characteristic of MiMo apartment-motels and houses, thick, rounded eaves were used to impart a sense of fullness to otherwise spare, rectilinear structures and to emphasize a sense of shelter.
Sawtoothed Floor Plates: MiMo hotel architects often designed floor plates with rooms set on the angle of a sawtooth, so that rooms facing north and south would have ocean views.
Screen Block: Mass-produced, cast-concrete block, also known locally as “breeze block,” was used in an imaginative variety of geometric and organic patterns to create stunning abstract compositions like the all-screen-block façade of the TechnoMarine Building on Biscayne Boulevard and NE 29 Street, and Wahl Snyder’s McArthur Engineering Building at the University of Miami.
Screening: Subtropical Modernists fully integrated mesh screening into their residential designs as they adapted the open Modernist houses of semi-arid California to humid, mosquito-ridden South Florida.
Shed Roofs: Wright brought the long, sloping shed roof, a feature of what Vincent Scully identified as the Shingle Style, back into the American mainstream with his design for Taliesin West. The shed roof became shorthand for modern American domesticity and can be found in countless MiMo houses and motels.

Slump Brick: Synthetic slumped brick was a ubiquitous decorative material in MiMo. The inexpensive concrete product came in a range of sizes, textures, and colors. Brick imagery balanced Modernism with a sense of tradition and domesticity.
Space-Age Imagery: A number of MiMo landmarks capitalized on space-age imagery, such as the University of Miami’s Pick Music Library, with its extending pods like those on a lunar landing module, and the Pepsi-Cola Bottling pavilion, with its spiraling floating staircases, a vision straight out of the 1953 film The War of the Worlds. Toward the end of the MiMo era, the television cartoon series The Jetsons reflected and parodied the period fascination with the future.
Spandrels: Panels placed between the window head of one floor and the windowsill of the floor above. MiMo spandrels were often clad in glass mosaic tileor textured, painted stucco.
Textured Stucco: Inexpensive stucco lent itself to the creation of textures and abstract decorative relief in the abundant Miami sunshine.
Tray Balconies: Cantileveredbalconies with concrete parapets (low walls, usually formed by the projection of a wall above a flat roof) are used for their sculptural form in MiMo hotels and residences.
Wiggles: Biomorphic kidney shapes popular in postwar design usually appeared as ceiling coves or trays for indirect lighting.
