In our second guest post and honor of Women’s History Month, we’re continuing to get some insight from women entrepreneurs who are making an impact. We were fortunate to connect with renowned DJ, DJ Shilpa. DJ Shilpa shares her journey into music, being a DJ, being her own brand/business, her struggles and some advice for everyone!
Read Below:
Growing up, I always loved music, as many of us do.  I played the flute for most of my school life and was the band major in High School.  My dad decided to start a side business as a DJ to help support the family and I started to go to gigs with him, as his roadie.  Eventually, I started doing the gigs on my own.  I continued to DJ during college and even while I was in the corporate world.  Ultimately, I decided to make DJ’ing my fulltime job.  I think I knew from the first gig I went to with my dad that DJ’ing was my passion.  I just had to find the courage to make it my fulltime thing.
In the beginning of my career, there was always this assumption that I didn’t know how to do my job, on the basis of my gender.  I had to constantly work hard to earn respect as an expert from the customers and to relate to them.  A lot of customers initially were willing to work with me for the “novelty” of working with a female.  It took a lot of hard work to get clients to respect my position, my leadership and my opinion.
One of the most common challenges I’ve faced is being seen as an authority figure equal with that of my male coworkers.  I have often walked into venues where I have introduced myself as the DJ and owner of my company to the venue management, and yet they still seem to continue to address my workers, looking right past me, a female, as if I’m not a capable leader in a position of authority.
Now, with over 15 years of experience and an impressive portfolio, I’ve definitely earned a place as one of the most in demand DJ’s in the South Asian Wedding Industry. I’ve been showcased as a featured vendor on Platinum Weddings and Maharani Weddings and travelled internationally to perform.  I’m far from predictable and can kick it with any genre of music, effortlessly mixing even Bollywood with old school hip hop.
My advice for other entrepreneurs would be to really research and understand your market, put in the hard work, listen to your clients, focus on what makes you thrive, network and never sell yourself short!
