DNP Rewatch Rankings: PINOFs

I can’t bring myself say goodbye to this project quite yet, so this week I’m going to post my personal rankings for some of the DNP video “series.” I’d love to see other’s rankings as well!

Obviously I have to start with the PINOFs, so from my least to most favorite:

10. Phil is not on fire 5

This is just the least memorable of them for me. It’s not bad, but I always thought it felt a bit off for some reason. And now we know that this was actually the second version of PINOF 5 that they filmed, so maybe that’s why!

9. Phil is not on fire 3

Again, this one just isn’t as memorable for me overall, although on rewatch there are some great bits. Is it partially the bad haircuts? Maybe it’s partially the bad hair cuts, lol.

8. Phil is not on fire 4

This might be a bit controversial because I know PINOF4 is a lot of people’s least favorite. I like it though! There are some great bits and Phil especially just seems so fond throughout the entire video.

6. Phil is not on fire 7

This ended up lower than I expected it to. These middle ones are so close for me; I keep swapping them around in my head. I love the “ladders” song and the trust fall bit, but other parts aren’t as memorable or funny to me, I guess. Dan is so so smiley throughout it though.

7. Phil is not on fire 10

The final PINOF! There are some bits in this one that I love and some that are just “meh” for me, so it ends up here. The first selfie recreation part alone pushed this one up a bit though.

5. Phil is not on fire 2

The early-on-ness and (likely) less planned nature of this one pushes it up in the rankings for me. They’re really just trying to make each other laugh the whole time and I love it.

4. Phil is not on fire 6

The joint content at the end of 2014 and into early 2015 was such a return to comfortable-ness and easy amusement, and PINOF6 really epitomizes that, after a bit of a dip for 3, 4, and 5 (in my opinion). Also some of Phil’s faces are great in this one, and the sweater-sharing and clothes swap bits are amazing. So it has to be up here for me.

3. Phil is not on fire 8

I love this one! Every question/bit is great. They just seemed really “on” for this one and the rapid-fire bouncing off what the other has said is some of the best in any of them.

I mean, the original has to be up here for me. This video is such a classic and was really the start of everything. Plus, I’m amazed at how comfortable DNP are with each other and how well they work together on camera after having just met in person. No wonder they love working together still.

My run-away favorite! The jump scares. The cheese costume. The random “idiot sandwich" bit. The Phil Ribena flip. And just so much ‘chewing ice’ staring. 🥺 I love it so much.

been reading thru @feelingofcontent's dnprewatch posts and also rewatching all the videos i havent rewatched recently enough already lol. i wanted to do a similar thing where i chronicle rewatches but my brains too scattered to make it like an organized thing and idk if i even have much to say on like an old video of phil talking about lobsters or smth, so ill just keep doing what im doing and liveblogging about whatever dnp video i happen to be rewatching at any moment and maybe post a clip from it

DNP Rewatch Rankings: All Joint Videos

And finally, I made a tier list of all of the joint videos! I count “joint” videos when DNP are together in a video, for essentially the entire video (cameos, brief announcement appearances, etc. do not count). I do count Dan appearing as voice-only.

These is just based on my personal preferences for content, really. Clearly I have a bit of a preference for content from 2017 or later. Within each tier, they’re not in preference order, just chronological. I tried to limit how many I put in S-tier, but it was SO HARD. And I ended up with way too many in A, but I don’t care! I enjoy too many of them too much to move them down.

If you want to do this and share, I think you should be able to use my template! I could not get my actual rankings to save/download, so I just took a screenshot.

DNP Rewatch Rankings: ISGs

Overall, the ISGs aren’t my favorite of Dan’s videos and not ones I choose to watch that often, but the rewatch reminded me how funny some of them are.

10. Internet Support Group 9

This is my least favorite of the ISGs. It feels a bit like he’s trying too hard to be funny in this one. It’s also from the time when it seemed like Dan was struggling a bit with what kind of content he wanted to make, so that may be part of it.

9. Internet Support Group 4

This one is just kind of ‘meh’ for me, I guess? Nothing particularly memorable or particularly funny.

8. Internet Support Group 2

This is not one of my favorites, but gets pushed over the last two for me by seeming more natural/less scripted than some of the later ones, and for the discussion of “best friends” towards the end.

7. Internet Support Group 10

The last of the ISGs. Dan has a good mix of funny and more serious questions in this, with some actually decent advice. And some excellent facial expression reactions. But I like it less than some of the middle-years ones.

6. Internet Support Group 5

Dan is quite passionate in this one, and very loud in bits. The rosy patch is also out in full-force. 🥺 Again, he doesn’t seem to be trying to be too funny in this one and the bits he did plan (like the Haru pillow) are great.

5. Internet Support Group

The original makes the top half for me. The format for these is remarkably consistent from the start. Including Dan taking his response to questions he relates to much more slowly and carefully.

4. Internet Support Group 6

Dan posted three ISG videos in 2015 (4, 5, and 6) and this is my favorite of those. He does a good job mixing more serious questions with more joking ones, but this one leans a bit more on the serious side.

3. Internet Support Group 3

My favorite of the early-on ISGs. He had some good advice/serious ones in this that he seemed to relate to, and he is so soft about those.

2. Internet Support Group 8

This one is up here partially for some good/funny questions, but partially for being the video he was filming before he sprayed deodorant in his eye before flying to Australia. 😂 Also the (likely not actually) vodka shots and his dramatic overreaction to them is great.

1. Internet Support Group 7

This is my favorite of the ISGs!  Dan seems relaxed and not trying too hard to be funny, which I feel like he is in some of them. Also some good bits of physical humor in this one as well. And I love the Winnie the Pooh mug.

DNP Rewatch Rankings: Sleepless Nights and Regret Buyings

Phil doesn’t have any solo video series that are more than 3-4 videos, so I thought I’d do some quick rankings of a couple different ones.

First the “Sleepless Night” videos.

4. A HUNGRY Sleepless Night With Phil

I mean, it’s a cute video but it is SO staged/fake, especially in hindsight. So much more than any of the others. I’m guessing the lack of believability by this point is why he ended this series.

3. A Sleepless Night With Phil

The original! It’s fun, but I like the next couple a little better and find them more memorable. He is so inconsistent with how quiet or not he is being in this one, lol.

2. Another Sleepless Night with Phil

I do love this one. It has always seemed to most “realistic” of them, because Dan was away on a family holiday. And the bit where he’s watching the first Sims gaming video is just 🥺

1. A VERY Sleepless Night With Phil

This is my favorite! It’s just casual Phil updates and chats. Plus I love the BONCAs outfit options try-on, and the look at his old Facebook profile pictures.

And then his “Regret Buying” series. (He has many more ‘buy-things-and-commentate’ type videos, but these are the ones he specifically labeled this way.)

4. 6 Things I Regret Buying - Inappropriate Pickle??

Okay, I actually really like all of these videos, so they were incredibly hard to order. This one loses out because it feels a bit more planned than the others (like he bought items specifically for it). But Phil is hilarious, and it has the vase-drinking gag and hair lights, which are great.

3. 6 Things I Regret Buying!

I love this one, but I love the other two slightly more. This is the original though! And it has brief tour clips which is fun. And the stress mushroom, which haunts me.

2. 5 Things I Regret Buying - INFLATABLE HALLOWEEN COSTUME!

This one squeaks over the last one in my rankings just for the Halloween costume bit and Dan’s reaction. Actually, the physical comedy in all of this one is really great, which I sometimes forget Phil is also so good at.

1. 5 Things I Regret Buying - SILVER HAIR DYE

This one is my favorite. Phil is just on in it with the effortless-seeming humor. King of comedy. Also the editing in this one is fantastic.

DNP Rewatch Rankings: Baking

Baking videos! Again, some of my favorites overall, though at least at the top a bit easier for me to rank than the DITLs or PINOFs.

9. Easter Baking - PASTEL LEMON MERINGUES

This is a hilarious video, but it’s just a bit TOO chaotic. This was way too complicated for them to attempt on camera, directly before flying to Australia.  WHY did they think that was a good idea?! The decorating part and the ending definitely seem a bit rushed due to that.

8. Halloween Baking: Brownie Graveyard!

My lowest ranked Halloween baking is this first one. Mostly because they just got better and more comfortable as time went on, and the later ones hold up a bit better for me. I tend not to rewatch this one as much. But they are so proud of themselves in it for a pretty successful bake!

7. Easter Baking - EXTREME TRIPLE CHOCOLATE NESTS

Already to the second of the three Easter bakings...I just like the Halloween one’s better overall! This first Easter baking is great though. Choosing a simpler recipe works out well for them because then they can be funny without trying too hard, and it’s a perfect level of chaos.

6. How to make Christmas cookies!

The first baking video (left public; rip How to Make British Pancakes)! This video is extra nostalgic for me as it’s the first joint DNP video I saw after I started watching them back in 2011. Dan is so hyper in it. Also, so many things continue through all the baking videos from this.

5. Halloween Baking - SPOOKY CUPCAKES

These middle ones are so hard for me to rank. This video is great too. Dan wearing Phil’s jumper! Frosting all over their faces by the end! Somehow they thought green food coloring would work on chocolate, haha. A slightly less successful actual bake though.

4. Halloween Baking - PUMPKIN SPICE PUMPKIN COOKIES

When I went to rank these, this was the biggest surprise placement for myself. I tend to forget about this Halloween baking a bit, but it’s so good! It was the first one on Dan’s channel, and Phil especially is just something else in it. Also the cookies turn out! And Dan has the cute extra marshmallow-stirrers bit.

3. Halloween Baking - MONSTER POPS!

A DNP classic and the start of the “post-baking universe,” according to Dan. They are really “on” in this one. Also contains my favorite himbo DNP moment. What a video. 

2. Easter Baking - BUNNY BISCUITS!

The latest baking videos are my top ranked ones. This one is so cute! They are so flirty! They mostly do a good job but somehow forget the sticks step after filming that instruction, which is just hilarious. A great video.

1. Halloween Baking - Creepy Crispy Cakes CONJOINED

My run-away favorite baking video, no question. I can’t watch it without smiling.  Sometimes I can’t believe this actually exists. They really did this. Also, the “bake” was actually successful, so that’s good.

DNP Rewatch Rankings: DITLs

The DITL videos are all some of my favorites, so this is going to be hard. 

7. A Day in the Life of Dan and Phil in London!

I mean...I this video is great too, even though it’s at the bottom of this list. There are bits of it that I absolutely love. But overall it ranks lower for me because it seems a little more planned than the original, and not as comfortable as the later ones.

6. A Day in the Life of Dan and Phil in JAPAN!

All of these are so good; how did this one end up second-to-last. It ranks a bit lower for me since it’s a bit more “touristy” than the others. But they do seem to be having so much fun on this day and are so smiley.

5. A Day in the Life of Dan and Phil in AUSTRALIA!

As a trip for DNP, Japan wins out over Australia, but this DITL video gets the edge for me almost solely for the part at the end where they’re just casually hanging out in the hotel room. I’m sure they could have done something more interesting to film, but no, just the two of them with room service and watching tv on their iPad.

4. A Day in the Life of Phil and Dan!

The original! This one is up the list for me mostly for the nostalgia. I love seeing them basically just doing errands in downtown Manchester. And the groceries and the cooking together and everything.

3. Dan and Phil AND DOGS!

I’m including this one the DITL from 2017, as that’s basically what it is. And it’s going to rank high of course; how could it not with the adorable dogs? DNP seem to be enjoying themselves so much in it. And I love the glimpse at their planning for a merch item. This one is definitely a comfort video for me.

2. A Week in the Life of Dan and Phil!

I love a behind-the-scenes look at things, so this one ticks that box, plus the domestic-ness of a DITL. This one just seems so casual too. And it’s got the 2017-or-later level of comfort, which just pushes it up the list for me.

1. A Festive Day in the Life of Dan and Phil!

Festive DITL my beloved. This is my absolute favorite and probably one of my top five DNP joint videos of all time. It’s probably the most “domestic” of the DITL videos; just the two of them hanging out and they seem quite happy with that. I love it so much.

Admittedly, this is not really what I was expecting from any of the description or promo that Dan did ahead of time. I enjoyed it the first time I watched it, but it’s not something I really rewatch. Even with the YouTube editing/control/etc., parts of it still feel like a very “Dan” video to me. (As in scripted, YouTube-persona Dan...he seems so different in live shows or even conversations with people he’s truly comfortable with.)

Dan also shared some outtake photos...the second one made me say “what the fuck” out loud when he posted them. And then Phil sharing it too with some trivia bits about his part! 😭

DNP Rewatch: Basically I'm Gay

And here we are. Dan coming out simultaneously feels like it just happened and so long ago. I vividly remember when this video got posted. I was at work, and saw the tweet and then the video almost immediately after. I thought it would be fine to watch at my desk...and then I started crying and had to go sit in the bathroom with my headphones to finish it.

22:22 - “more than just romantic” is just 😭 and ‘trust’ and ‘safety’ being what Dan needed most and something Phil provided. and the trust he and Phil still have with each other, to the point of Phil being comfortable with Dan saying all of this in the video before Phil had really come out publicly himself

22:42 - and more crying. “actual soulmates” says the man who doesn’t believe in souls...Phil transcends that disbelief

22:57 - “one person accepting you can make all the difference” might be the most memorable line from this video for me

23:04 - but still drawing the boundaries they want. so important

23:53 - specifically the boundaries around discussion of sex life (although sometimes I think we know too much already...*cough*)

24:15 - another extremely important point. not coming out is not lying

24:50 - clips from Our List of Awkward Moments all the way back in 2014 and the diss track in 2016

25:28 - hearing what Dan felt like and what was happening from his perspective during the 2011-2012 era

26:12 - I love the “we love working together” it’s so true; you can see it in every project they do together 🥺

26:17 - the “me and Phil” as usual. and this whole statement about them wanting their relationship for them and not for anyone else

Just so much love for Dan for this video. He was so active on social media for a bit afterwards - sharing pictures of his rainbow birthday cake, balloons, this insta story, and these tweets specifically (1, 2, 3). And then of course going to Pride in early July (1, 2, 3), where he looks so happy in all the pictures from that day. 😭

Probably my favorite video of 2021. I mean...it is everything. It’s definitely the video I currently rewatch the most.

It was uploaded just four days before YWGTTN was released. Dan was doing tons promo around this time, which Phil was apparently helping with. I honestly still can’t believe Dan let Phil cut his hair before he was on camera SO MUCH for that promo. Phil’s dizziness issue had also started happening around or shortly before this time, as he was already having scans for that (1, 2) in mid-May.

Love this video. Love everything about it. One I still rewatch fairly regularly. I still can’t believe we got a pco, quiff-Phil one. Another top video from 2021. I sometimes go back-and-forth on whether I like this one even more than the haircut video. Also the second video in a row where Dan is the main focus of the title. It doesn’t even really make sense for this one...this story is mostly about Phil! Giving Dan the promo for all of his things.

The end of May/early June was YWGTTN promo time for Dan and moving time (finally) for them. May 20 was the first time the furniture was set up in the new house. The Lesters also came to visit at the end of May. They officially said they were moving on May 27 and unpacking on May 30 (1, 2), but that could be some delayed posting as they sometimes do.

This is definitely in the running for my favorite video of 2021. It was just SO MUCH after a couple years of basically no joint content at all. And the start of the Stereo era! Such a good time.
