i’ve never shared this story time with anyone except my friends and i thought sharing it with BoB fans could be fun (because it was such an amazing experience!!)

GOING TO A BAND OF BROTHERS CONVENTION

i attended the commemorations in normandy back in 2019 bc i’m from france and i REALLY wanted to drag my parents there to show how amazing the whole experience was (and it was the 75th anniversary so yay). and then i discovered that they were doing a BoB convention with some of the actors (shane taylor, robin laing etc.) and as i was exactly in my BoB era, i figured it would be cool to attend. in my 17y-old glory, i went there with no one to help me go through all the tables and signing and talking (reminder i’m french and when anxious, my english is 10 times worse). fortunately, my mother asked a group of lovely girls to accompany me, and they even gifted me a bastogne card for the actors to sign !! (i had a poor piece of paper pls..) they were super fun and thankfully one of them was american, so it was easier to strike up a convo or joke around with the guys.

i’ll tell you their characters’ names but i remember seeing grant, shifty, popeye, penkala, dike, dale dye.. seeing how the guys were so close even in reality, how friendly the whole atmosphere was, seeing how connected to each other they are because they know this tv show will go on through the generations and is still important today is so special, truly.

but then i came around chris langlois, rick (welsh), robin (babe) and shane’s table and omg i could’ve fainted, i WOULD HAVE. doc roe is my fav character (it’s never the same in reality but i got really attached to him, even after rewatching so </3) and meeting the grandson of the real roe was mindblowing.

but here comes the funniest part : it was the american girl’s birthday, rick and robin did not understand that and thought it was MY birthday, so when they signed my stuff they asked how old i was yadayada. and then we took a picture, robin even filmed a video on my phone (that i still have. and my wallpaper is actually him showing rick and shane in the background) for my friend who was as much of a fan as i was back then !! that was so cool of him !! then they finally understood it wasn’t my birthday when we told them and they were making fun of themselves, saying i should hide the card before my actual birthday. coolest interaction ever and they were so chill, i could actually talk a little bit since i was less nervous w/ them !! LOVE THEM !!

after going through these mountains of emotions, we ate at a restaurant just beside the convention place and i could see all the actors leaving, rick smiled to me and robin did the birthday joke again. and THEN a few days later my friend posted a tweet abt it and robin actually replied so, you know, the fact that he did not forget abt it 10 minutes after was nice lmao.

once a fangirl, always a fangirl apparently. the fact that i first became a fan at 17 and now i’m 21, oof it hits ya. i truly think i will never live something that cool again, currahee forever or whatever !!

Favorite place in the world you’ve visited?

Mt. Etna. When I was little (like, 3rd grade) we lived in Sicily, and one winter my brother and I wanted desperately to play in the snow, but it hadn't snowed where we lived in a long time. So we took a drive up Etna until we saw snow, where we stopped and spent the day playing around in it. (It was later that there was a horrible eruption that caused a bad earthquake where we lived, but I sleep like Nixon so I was dead to the world throughout the event.)

Something you’re proud of yourself for?

Making it through fire academy. Other than playing basketball one year in childhood I had never been very athletic, but I was out there doing bleacher runs, blackout drills, and climbing ladders to drag giant hoses to the top of buildings with the rest of them. I'm driven by the desire to not make an ass out of myself in front of others, and somehow I was able to do all those things, and ultimately participate in a live burn at the end of the program.

Favorite books?

Making my way through the books written by and about the troopers, so I gotta go with Band of Brothers. But my other favorites are anything by Kurt Vonnegut, the Dark Tower series, the Black Company series, Les Miserables, Moby Dick, Practical Demonkeeping (and almost anything by Christopher Moore), Hitchhiker's Guide...I'm sure I'm leaving some out, I love to read (Dick Tracy and Flash Gordon mostly...I couldn't resist).

Something that makes your heart happy when thinking about it?

.........band of brothers. Specifically my background characters. Specifically Smokey and McClung.

Favorite thing about your culture? About being American?

When did you join the HBO War fandom? What was the first show you watched?

It was a long road.......it came out when my family was stationed in Japan, so I didn't really know about it until I moved back. Streaming wasn't a thing then, so I would catch parts here and there, and I eventually figured I had seen the whole thing. Spent a long time thinking that people overreacted to it and that it was overrated. But I'm also leaving out one thing: that I am stupid. Figured my sister would appreciate having seen it, and suggested we watch it. I realized at the end of the first episode just how stupid I am.

Have you read any of Easy Company’s books? If so, which ones were your favorite?

I have a growing collection, but work often gets in the way. I've only read Ambrose's Band of Brothers. I've also read the Smokey portion of A Company of Heroes by Marcus Brotherton.

Favorite HBO War character and your favorite moment with them?

Have I mentioned how much I love Smokey yet.... One of his best moments (I think) is when he meets with Roe in Bastogne in his foxhole and gives him the morphine, tells him where to find scissors, and about Toye's boots.

Also McClung. And I love "ask him to dance, doc." The battle on the outskirts of Carentan has to be one of my favorite parts of the series though.

Do you make content for any fandoms, if so; what sort of content?

Just some gifs so far. I do like to write, but I've never dabbled in fanfiction.

Favorite actor/actress and your favorite film of theirs?

Russell Crowe and Michael Fassbender are the ones where I'll pretty much watch anything as long as one of them is in it, even if it's bad (like Jonah Hex...horrible movie, but worth it to see Fassbender's little villain character doing his little tee-hee leprechaun laugh through all his scenes). I'll also watch almost anything with Emily Blunt, she is fantastic and a hilarious human being.

Favorite quote/s that you wish to share with others?

So many by Kurt Vonnegut, but I'll just put two:

I had a bearded dragon named Ichabod years ago. And I still love that name for a lizard.

Do you like horror movies?

Yup. 28 Days Later is up there in my favorites. The Descent is an EXCELLENT horror movie for anyone that hasn't seen it (and has made it this far down my rambling answers). Ravenous isn't very well known, and it's not perfect, but it's fun and weird. Stir of Echoes is an unconventional horror movie, but an excellent one-off story. Slither is a fun one with a decent cast (Elizabeth Banks, Nathan Fillion, Michael Rooker, among others).

you were one of Easy Co.’s medics, working closely alongside Doc Roe when it came to doing your job 

you had only seen Dick around every once in a while, mostly just quick glances from Toccoa to Carentan 

to be honest, you had never had a really long conversation with the man at the time

that was, until Carentan 

a sniper shot had gone off, and the richochet hit Winters’s ankle 

Doc was too busy treating the others, and before you even had the chance to catch your breath after patching up the previous paratrooper, you saw Doc’s face appear in your field of vision looking extremely overwhelmed 

“i need you to patch up Lieutenant Winters while i make rounds with the other guys, he’s got a richochet in his ankle” 

you nodded, turning on your heel to go find the familiar tall redhead sitting down, waiting for someone to help him fix his wound 

spotting his vibrant hair across the sea of men, you made a beeline for him 

quickly setting down your supplies, you got to work, gently lifting his foot into your lap to get a better look at his injury 

“..... are you not going to say anything, Doc?”  

you looked up, eyes snapping to meet his gaze

blushing, you shook your head, mumbling “my apologies, i just was so focused on your wound that i didn’t even introduced myself”

Dick chuckled at that

“i already know who you are”

you ignored this, surprised he even knew your name

“you need to stay off this foot Lieutenant Winters, i wouldn’t want to see you back here because of an injury”

“i’ll try my best, but no promises.... hopefully i’ll see you again soon under better circumstances”

Dick didn’t stay off his foot, in fact it only got worse

but on the bright side, at least he got to see you

5. I will never gloss over this question, because I love my characters, and they're super background so......they don't get a lot of attention. Number one is always Smokey, and I also love McClung and Alley. After reading about them, I went and got attached, and they're like in 3 or 4 episodes each, if that. 😐 Smokey gets shot in the arm and I'm like "It's time to skip to episode 8, do a courtesy glance of Alley in episodes 9 and 10, then we can start it over."

6. I always feel bad saying my least favorite character is Sobel, Dike, or Cobb because, you know...the whole thing where they're real people lol. But as far as characters on the show go, I'd go with Sobel, maybe Dike as a close second. I feel like Cobb and Dike are more redeemable because at least they have some funny moments, but Sobel was just a bully put in charge of a bunch of guys that he could push around. I guess his one redeeming quality was that as long as he was making the company run Currahee or something, he was always right there doing it too. Still don't like him. He yelled at Smokey,

21. Lol my favorite characters are all side characters. I guess I can name some of the other side characters I enjoy. I love Harry, I can't get enough of him, he's hilarious. Also Popeye and Skinny. Skinny's faces in the background are the best, and I feel I make all of them regularly. And Popeye is a gosh darn delight.

22. Oohhh, so many good quotes. The one I always default to is Guarnere saying, "And we gotta do all this with a CO that has his head so far up his ass that lump in his throat is his goddamn nose." I love all the dialogue when Roe visits Toye and McClung in the foxhole, and McClung says, "Ask him to dance, doc." Immediately followed by The Stare. But all of that dialogue is so entertaining.
