On Dating and Why I Am This Close in Opting to Say Fuck It.

A very personal post, y'all. Stay tuned for more shit posting later.

As I navigate the modern dating world in the remains of Covid era, I have to say that out of all 4 years that I have been on and off using these dating apps (and I have used them all if they were open to homosexual dating: Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, Plenty of Fish, Her, Zoe, Badoo, Taimi, OkCupid), no time has made me feel any more jaded about finding someone real and wanting legitimate commitment until now.

Like, okay, my last two relationships were from Dating apps. My longest (6 mos.) relationship was from Her, and I proceeded to delete my account because I thought I found the one. Sadly she dumped me for dumb reasons and went off months later to find her person. I was still alone. Then, my most recent relationship was from Bumble, but we had to end because they were unsure about their mental state and sexuality/gender identity. Understandable, since you can't out your heart into a relationship if you don't put it in yourself. We are friends still.

I know I am young and shouldn't be so worried about it especially if it is spurred on by social media and outside pressures, but it's nearly been pressured by people being online posting about "oh X and I have been together for Y years and we bought Z together! I'm so happy and we're going on strong!" Like...I just want shit like that, but it seems like most sapphics my age genuinely don't want to settle down and really love someone like I do as much as they claim to want that. I'm also expected to live in the now, to not worry about settling down and marrying someone and to hook up as much as I can until the person comes. Hooking up actually does nothing for me, if anything it is a cheap thrill for a short amount of satisfaction instead of a long term thing.

My emotions and hormones constantly fight with one another. I want a relationship but I also always seem to find myself wanting sex too. As much as I appreciate women finding me sexually attractive, most times they're with someone already or they don't want to eventually form a relationship. They just want the relationship without the label of a relationship, and that's extremely disingenuous. I know there's a difference between sex and intimacy, but I legitimately crave sex as much as intimacy. With the right amount of Intimacy, I can ask for sex. That's how I work.

I think that one thing that holds me back from finding someone to love me is being autistic. Like...legit it's a lot harder to find the signals than usual and it frustrates me to no end because when I like someone, I seek to make them my partner unless we can only see ourselves as friends. When I like someone, I try to tell them as soon as I can that I like them. The way I see it, if I am not seeing any sort of progression in our discussions about planning dates and seeing how we mesh well in each other's lives, then I don't see it going anywhere.

Polyamory/Open relationship/unicorn/boyfriend: No. No. Fuck you. I don't care if you're into it, I'm not. You started talking to me and made your profile as if you were single and when I started to have feelings for you, you yank that shit away and say you want your BOYFRIEND to join us on a date? Fuck out of here! At least if you were up front, it's a red flag and I head the fuck out. (This isn't to be disrespectful to anyone in open relationships, oh you have so much more will power. I just can't because I am strictly monogamous)

Explicitly bashing my opinions on politics or talking over me because you assume I think like you: that's probably gonna be the thing that makes me angry the most. Like I am a minority with my own opinions! I don't have to take you talking over me or assuming I'm a raging leftist like you. I am not and never will be.

Saying you're crazy: if you have to put the fact that you're crazy and will "ruin my life" in your profile AS A GOOD THING, fuck off. You need a therapist instead of a relationship.

Vibe: what does that mean? You want to date me without saying we are dating? So casual date? No, no. I don't do that.

People who unironically like Dhar Mann: do I need to say anymore? Unrealistic, cheesy, Hallmark inspiration porn.

With all of these things... I am pretty sure I won't find anyone that's living near me that doesn't have any of these traits. I may either have to give up one or just give up on dating. It's getting closer and closer to the latter option for me. I'll just order a sex bot and say that's m fucking girlfriend. I'll be like those pathetic little shut ins and just give the fuck up.

It looks less and less like any sapphic really wants a good, somewhat traditional, healthy relationship and just wants to put as many warning signs on them as possible....and that saddens me. My life will be completed when I get into a long term relationship tat leads into marriage, have at least one child, travel the world and have a successful job, have the body I want and settle down in a home somewhere. Is that a hard thing to ask for?

I am already working on the working out, job and traveling parts, but all I need now is just the relationship and home soon...looks like I'll have to give up before I find her.

PS, am I a bad person for wanting to date outside my race a cis woman? I think that is what gets me into a lot of shit. Ugh I hate these thoughts so much.

Erik curled over as he fell, bracing his arms around his ears as the trees rushed up to meet them. Panic roared in his ears as branches smashed around him and tore at his skin until he hit the ground with a grunt.

“Charles!” he shouted, shoving himself to his feet.

“Here,” Charles groaned, rolling onto his back and wincing. Erik dropped next to him and started running his hands up Charles’ legs, checking for breaks. “Stop fussing, Erik,” Charles sighed.

Erik rolled his eyes. “Shut up, Charles, we both need to know if you’re injured.”

Charles shrugged in agreement, pushing himself up to sit against the tree trunk that had so thoughtfully broken his fall. “Ugh. I think my legs are fine. My ribs took the brunt of the action.”

Erik quirked a half-smile at him and went back to checking his legs. Suddenly Charles tensed, putting his fingers to his temple. “Someone’s coming.”

“Can you make us disappear?”

He frowned. “They might be able to take us to this… personification of the universe.”

“Or the magical talking snail?” Erik snarked. “Just look, Charles - surely you can tell if they know either of these people.”

Charles frowned at him, and a frisson of hurt ran through their connection before it cut off suddenly. “You do realise that I don’t just go diving into everyone’s minds like that.”

Erik looked at him flatly. Charles rolled his eyes and put his fingers back to his temple. His eyes widened. “They, uh… yes, they know her.” He glanced back at Erik. “I’m not sure I’d describe her as a snail, though. Not from what I saw.”

Erik raised his eyebrows, but focused on finding Charles’ wheelchair and straightening out all the dents. He lowered it next to Charles. “Would you mind if I lift you in?”

Charles rubbed his ribs with a wince. “Yes, I think that would probably be sensible.” He looped an arm around Erik’s shoulders as he helped him up, then took a deep breath. “Here they come.”

Erik turned, one hand on Charles’ chair. He could feel the metal approaching, large chunks of it in curious shapes, but even that couldn’t prepare him for the weapons the two women carried, or their strange clothes. One, a slight girl with short, pink hair and a cowboy hat, wore a giant pair of scissors as a sword, and the other, a tall black girl with long dreadlocks, had an enormous, cartoonish claw-hammer slung over her shoulder.

“Who goes there?” demanded the hammer-girl, stepping in front of the smaller one.

Charles raised his hands. Erik reluctantly followed suit. “We mean no harm,” Charles said, in that calm diplomat’s voice of his. “We’re looking for Wakti Wapnasi?”

The small girl’s eyes widened and she put her hand on her companion’s shoulder. “How do you know that name?” she demanded. Erik wondered if she was even eighteen yet.

Charles glanced up at Erik. I don’t know why you think I’ll be any help here, Erik muttered in his mind.

Charles gave him the mental impression of a flat look, then turned back to the girls. “It’s rather a strange situation… it might be faster if I showed you?”

“What do you mean?” the smaller girl asked, taking a step forward.

“Stay back, my lady,” said hammer-girl. “It may be one of the Mage’s traps.”

“I won’t hurt you,” Charles said. “I can send you all the information straight into your mind. You can see what I’ve seen.”

The girls glanced at each other, then warily back at Charles. When they made no move to refuse, he closed his eyes. Erik heard, in his own mind, the rustle of memories Charles sent to them; the children, their powers, Priest’s attack, and Francis, lying still with an entire world in his mind. He saw the girls gasp and stumble backwards, clutching at each other.

Show off, Erik teased.

“How can this be?” said the smaller girl.

“They must be in league with the Mage!” Hammer-girl pointed her weapon at Charles. With a gesture, Erik pulled it out of her hands, melting it into a pool at their feet.

Now who’s the show off? Charles said, but he wheeled forward. “I assure you, we don’t know any mage. We certainly aren’t working with one. We just want to find Wakti Wapnasi - I know you know her name.”

“How can you--”

“Because I heard her name in your mind,” he said, tapping the side of his head.

“We just want to bring the children home,” Erik said. “She’s our only hope right now, and we don’t even know if she can help us.”

The two girls looked at each other again, a silent conversation happening between them just as surely as it would between Charles and Erik. At last the taller girl stepped back, and the small one walked forward warily. “I am Litzibitz Trost, Princess of the Valley of Inglenook, and this is Bigby Badoo, my loyal lady-in-waiting. My brother, the Lord Prince Panto, has been working with Wakti Wapnasi for many years in secret. They seek to find a way to reveal the Prophecy of Prophecies, that which will restore the Empty Throne and return The Boy to us.” She looked between them both, her large eyes fierce with intensity. “I only tell you this because I cannot let a child remain in such danger - but this is of the utmost import, and must remain a secret - if you betray us, you will doom the whole of Wendimoor.”

“Wendimoor?” Erik asked in an aside to Charles.

“This world of theirs,” Charles murmured, but wheeled himself closer and clasped Litzibitz’s hand in both of his. “I swear to you, we’ll keep your secret. We have no wish to disturb your brother or Wakti’s work, and if we can help in any way, we will. Will you take us to her?”

Litzibitz looked up at Bigby once more. Her lady inclined her head just a little, and Litzibitz turned back with a wide, sweet smile. “Follow us.”

The way through the forest was slow going at first, with Charles’ chair hardly designed to pick its way through the undergrowth. Erik kept quiet and walked beside him as he swore under his breath, muscles straining as he forced it over roots that ground out on his footplates. As it tipped sideways, nearly dumping him on the ground, he swore viciously and thumped a nearby tree. Erik bit his lip and looked away, shielding his guilt and frustration behind a steel plate in his mind.

Litzibitz and Bigby turned back, heads tilted on one side. “Yes, I know, I’m slowing you down,” Charles hissed, more acid than Erik had heard him in a long time. “It’s not entirely by choice.”

“Does your chair not have feet to extend for rough terrain?” Bigby asked, poking at the wheels. “They should retract just here - hmm, why are they missing?”

Charles glanced up at Erik, then back at Bigby. “You have wheelchairs with feet here?”

Litzibitz nodded. “The Bofuki Nepoo are great inventors, and it is not just chairs with footed wheels, but cycles and infant carriages as well. Anything that may need to wheel on flat ground, and climb on rough.”

Charles bit his lip. “I’ll have to talk to Hank about something like that.”

“Or you can talk to me,” said Erik mildly. “Bigby, would you mind showing Charles an image of these extendable feet in your mind? Then Charles can pass it on to me, and I’ll make some modifications.”

Charles looked up at him with that old, wondering expression that always used to make Erik turn away from him, unable to look straight into the sun. He looked away now, too, holding down, but savouring, that leap in his heart.

“Thank you,” Charles said softly, a gentle smile warming Erik from the inside out as he added the strange, pointed extensions around Charles’ axles, drawing some metal out of the handles and arm rests.

Erik patted the push rim and stood, clearing his throat. “Let’s get going then.”

Charles moved forward, the spikes digging into the roots and soil as he pushed, and his smile turned to one of triumph as he made his way over the rough ground. “Perfect,” he grinned.

It still wasn’t easy, and by the time they made it through the woods into the little village, Charles was breathing hard. So was Erik, though. “I’ve grown lazy in your comfortable little school, Charles,” he muttered.

“You and me both, my friend.”

Charles’ wheel spikes retracted on the flat ground, they followed Litzibitz and Bigby to a large, low-roofed hut in the centre of the village as small, fur-clad people with multicoloured, streaked skin appeared to peer at them, heads turning this way and that strangely.

“So, you are the ones who disturb my prophecy,” said a low, gravelly voice, and Erik stopped dead in the path.

Erik, don’t be rude, said Charles’ voice in his head.

How in anyone’s mind is that a snail? Erik demanded, and he wasn’t too proud to admit that there was just the slightest bit of hysteria creeping into his voice. Because that was not a person, and it sure as hell wasn’t a snail. She was almost entirely covered in thick purple cloth, a huge, misshapen tricorn hat on her head, but her face was plated with strange, wood-like bones.

He swallowed hard, resisted the urge to shake his head and wonder at his life’s choices, and followed the man he would follow to the end of the world.

“Wakti Wapnasi?” Charles asked, holding out a hand.

The definitely-not-a-snail took his hand in her… appendages. She didn’t seem to have hands, more like flexible pincers with fingers. “That’s me,” she said, something gleefully cheerful under the gravel of her voice. “And you are the one who stole The Boy,” she said, turning her gaze on Erik.

“I’m… what?”

“The Boy who will save us all. The Boy of prophecy. A prophecy, I might add, that I almost had pinned down, before you came along and started to make things interesting.”

“I’m… terribly sorry,” said Charles, glancing at Erik.

Wakti laughed merrily. Erik wasn’t sure if he liked the noise at all. “Do not be sorry. I am eager to see how things change. Now, you want to talk to the Universe?”

“We want to get the children back,” Erik said. “And if that means talking to the Universe itself, then yes. Please.”

“Well, then,” Wakti said, and the bones or wooden structures on her face bent as she smiled. “You had best come in.”

November was our first newsletter for A21 Ateam-Hsv. We scheduled a fundraiser at Spirited Art that due to the number of people we had to cancel but will be rescheduled at a later time and date! The price was to be $35 per person where Spirited Art will donate $10 of every seat sold, the more that signed up the more we could provide hope to the hopeless! Please do not fret my friends, because we will have another opportunity to schedule this again and with your involvement We Can Provide the Hope to the Hopeless!!

January 2020 was NATIONAL HUMAN TRAFFICKING AWARENESS MONTH and focuses on the date of January 11th were You Wear Blue For Save The Date Day!

February we didn’t supply a newsletter but we did want to mention that February is known for National Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month!

The most recent newsletter for March was annotated on March 2nd. It opens up showing some myths that people have on Human Trafficking and the FACT behind each one.

1. Human Trafficking is only a global problem, since I live in USA, I am not affected. FACT: Human Trafficking has been reported in every single state in the U.S. Call the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 888-373-7888 to report tips or to learn more about how you can help your community.

2. Trafficking includes some form of travel or transportation across borders. FACT: Human Trafficking does not require movement or border crossing. If someone is forced to work or engage in commercial sex against their will, it is Trafficking.

3. Victims must be held against their will using some form of physical restraint or bondage. FACT: It is more common for them to use psychological means of control, even though some traffickers do hold their victims by physical means. Fear, trauma, drug addiction, threats against families, and a lack of options due to poverty and homelessness can all prevent someone from leaving. Some individuals who experience trafficking may also be manipulated or believe they are in love with their trafficker, which can make them resistant to seeking help.

4. Only women and children experience trafficking. FACT: Anyone can experience Human Trafficking, including men. Traffickers prey on the vulnerable often with promises of a better life. Risk factors for trafficking include: prior history of abuse or sexual violence, generational trauma, poverty, unemployment, and unstable living situations, or homelessness.

5. Victims will be desperate to escape their trafficker and ask for help when they need it. FACT: Individuals who experience trafficking may not readily seek help due to a number of factors, including shame, self-blame, fear, or even specific instructions from their traffickers regarding how to behave when interacting with others. They do not always self-identify and may not realize that they have rights.

Slavery happens everywhere. That’s why We are joining A21 in the fight for freedom. Because We believe that every action matters, and every donation makes a difference. New Documents Show That Facebook Has Never Deserved Your Trust

Another week, another set of reminders that, while Facebook likes to paint itself as an “optimistic” company that’s simply out to help users and connect the world, the reality is very different.  This week, those reminders include a collection of newly released documents suggesting that the company adopted a host of features and policies even though it knew those choices would harm users and undermine innovation.

Yesterday, a member of the United Kingdom’s Parliament published a trove of internal documents from Facebook, obtained as part of a lawsuit by a firm called Six4Three. The emails, memos, and slides shed new light on Facebook’s private behavior before, during, and after the events leading to the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

Here are some key points from the roughly 250 pages of documents.

The documents include some of the internal discussion that led to Facebook Messenger’s sneaky logging of Android users’ phone call and text message histories. When a user discovered what Messenger was doing this past spring, it caused public outrage right on the heels of the Cambridge Analytica news. Facebook responded with a “fact check” press release insisting that Messenger had never collected such data without clear user permission.

In newly revealed documents from 2015, however, Facebook employees discuss plans to coerce users into upgrading to a new, more privacy-invasive version of Messenger “without subjecting them to an Android permissions dialog at all,” despite knowing that this kind of misrepresentation of the app’s capabilities was “a pretty high-risk thing to do from a PR perspective.”

This kind of disregard for user consent around phone number and contact information recalls earlier research and investigation exposing Facebook’s misuse of users’ two-factor authentication phone numbers for targeted advertising. Just as disturbing is the mention of using call and text message history to inform the notoriously uncanny PYMK, or People You May Know, feature for suggesting friends.

“I think we leak info to developers”

A central theme of the documents is how Facebook chose to let other developers use its user data. They suggest that Mark Zuckerberg recognized early on that access to Facebook’s data was extremely valuable to other companies, and that Facebook leadership were determined to leverage that value.

A little context: in 2010, Facebook launched version 1.0 of the Graph API, an extremely powerful—and permissive—set of tools that third-party developers could use to access data about users of their apps and their friends.

Dozens of emails show how the company debated monetizing access to that data. Company executives proposed several different schemes, from charging certain developers for access per user to requiring that apps “[Facebook] doesn’t want to share data with” spend a certain amount of money per year on Facebook’s ad platform or lose access to their data.

The needs of users themselves were a lesser concern. At one point, in a November 2012 email, an employee mentioned the “liability” risk of giving developers such open access to such powerful information.

Zuckerberg replied:

Of course, two years later, that “leak” is exactly what happened: a shady “survey” app was able to gain access to data on 50 million people, which it then sold to Cambridge Analytica.

“Whitelists” and Access to User Data

In 2015, partly in response to concerns about privacy, Facebook moved to the more restrictive Graph API version 2.0. This version made it more difficult to acquire data about a user’s friends.

However, the documents suggest that certain companies were “whitelisted” and continued to receive privileged access to user data after the API change—without notice to users or   transparent criteria for which companies should be whitelisted or not.

Companies that were granted “whitelist” access to enhanced friends data after the API change included Netflix, AirBnB, Lyft, and Bumble, plus the dating service Badoo and its spin-off Hot or Not.

The vast majority of smaller apps, as well as larger companies such as Ticketmaster, were denied access.

User Data As Anticompetitive Lever

Both before and after Facebook’s API changes, the documents indicate that the company deliberately granted or withheld access to data to undermine its competitors. In an email conversation from January 2013, one employee announced the launch of Twitter’s Vine app, which used Facebook’s Friends API. The employee proposed they “shut down” Vine’s access. Mark Zuckerberg’s response?

“Yup, go for it.”

“Reciprocity”

A significant portion of the internal emails mention Facebook enforcing “data reciprocity”: that is, requiring apps that used data from Facebook to allow their users to share all of that data back to Facebook. This is ironic, given Facebook’s staunch refusal to grant reciprocal access to users’ own contacts lists after using Gmail’s contact-export feature to fuel its early growth.

In an email dated November 19, 2012, Zuckerberg outlined the company’s thinking:

It’s no surprise that a company would prioritize what’s good for it and its profit, but it is a problem when Facebook tramples user rights and innovation to get there. And while Facebook demanded reciprocity from its developers, it withheld access from its competitors.

False User Security to Scope Out Competitors

Facebook acquired Onavo Protect, a “secure” VPN app, in fall 2013. The app was marketed as a way for users to protect their web activity from prying eyes, but it appears that Facebook used it to collect data about all the apps on a user’s phone and immediately began mining that data to gain a competitive edge. Newly released slides suggest Facebook used Onavo to measure the reach of competing social apps including Twitter, Vine, and Path, as well as measuring its penetration in emerging markets such as India.

In August, Apple finally banned Onavo from its app store for collecting such data in violation of its Terms of Service. These documents suggest that Facebook was collecting app data, and using it to inform strategic decisions, from the very start.

Everything But Literally Selling Your Data

In response to the documents, several Facebook press statements as well as Mark Zuckerberg’s own letter on Facebook defend the company with the refrain, “We’ve never sold anyone’s data.”

That defense fails, because it doesn’t address the core issues. Sure, Facebook does not sell user data directly to advertisers. It doesn’t have to. Facebook has tried to exchange access to users and their information in other ways. In another striking example from the documents, Facebook appeared to offer Tinder privileged access during the API transition in return for use of Tinder’s trademarked term “Moments.” And, of course, Facebook keeps the lights on by selling access to specific users’ attention in the form of targeted advertising spots.

No matter how Zuckerberg slices it, your data is at the center of Facebook’s business. Based on these documents, it seems that Facebook sucked up as much data as possible through “reciprocity” agreements with other apps, and shared it with insufficient regard to consequences for users. Then, after rolling back its permissive data-sharing APIs, the company apparently used privileged access to user data either as a lever to get what it wanted from other companies or as a weapon against its competitors. Mia Sabat, a sex therapist at the audio-based intimate wellbeing app Emjoy, knows her way around a good sext, and so we’ve chatted with her to get the essential tips we all need to get started.

Start with consent

Last year we did a feature on whether you need to ask someone for their permission before you drop a nude into their DMs, and the general consensus was yes, you do.

This doesn’t need to be a formal arrangement that feels like a cold contract.

Mia recommends trying one of these phrases to ‘signal that you’re keen to spice things up a little, but also allow someone to easily say no without pressure’:

Establish ground rules

Before you get going, it’s worth chatting through what you’re both comfortable with.

Mia suggests asking some questions: ‘Are you going to share pictures or videos? If so, how suggestive or explicit will they be? Are you comfortable incorporating toys? Will you allow your partner to tell you what to do or how to touch yourself? What platform are comfortable sexting on, and does it protect your privacy? Do you want to explore more wild or vivid fantasies? Where is your line with dirty talk – do you like to be called names, and if so, what is on, and off, limits?

‘Before moving forward, make sure you’re on the same page to ensure you both have the most enjoyable and pleasurable experience possible.’

Again, don’t stress about this being a super rigid checklist – just a few brief questions to make sure everyone’s comfortable will make a world of difference.

Plus, once you know everyone’s personal boundaries, you can get on with sexting without worrying your messages may be poorly received, getting rid of a lot of nerves.

Keep it simple

Trust us, you don’t need to get too poetic. Sometimes simple is best – especially if you’re feeling a bit uncertain.

Mia recommends: ‘Tell your partner what you wish you could do with them: where you want to stroke or lick them, how you want to touch their body, how you want them to touch themselves. You can also ask them to do the same.

‘Alternatively, you can narrate what you’re doing to yourself, how your body is responding, and what you’re wishing they could do, if they were there with you.

‘You can also try exploring fantasies that you’ve long-dreamt of sharing with your partner – just be sure they’re comfortable exploring them, too. Ultimately, don’t be afraid to vocalise your wants, needs and desires. This is an intimate experience for you to enjoy together, so leave your inhibitions at the door.’

Use the phrase ‘I want…’ as a starting point. What do you want to do? What would you do if you were together right at this moment?

Don’t force it

This ties into keeping it simple, but if you’re someone who experiences a full-body cringe at certain sex-related terms (pussy, for example, which makes many people shudder) or tone, you don’t have to use those words.

Don’t force yourself to take on a smut-filled persona if that feels deeply unnatural. And don’t worry about your words being perfectly written – it’s not important and if your partner is going to judge your sentence structure, they don’t really deserve the joy of a nice sext.

‘Just express yourself comfortably, in a way that feels sexy and exciting to you,’ says Mia. ‘If you’re uncomfortable with using more explicit words, establish terms that you and your S/O like to use when getting intimate.

Go slow and be responsive

Tune into how your partner is responding to your sexts and respond based on their responses. This is supposed to be an interactive conversation, not a monologue with one person loving life while the other one grimaces at their phone screen.

Respect those boundaries you discussed earlier and make sure you’re thinking of your partner’s pleasure and turn-ons, not just saying whatever you want to get yourself off.

Mia advises: ‘If you have agreed to incorporate raunchier dirty talk into your sexting session, it’s best to start off slowly, rather than jumping right into the deep end.

‘Like any sexual experience, it’s important to understand and cultivate a positive connection between the two of you while sexting.

Maybe you do, maybe you don’t, because social media platforms come and go faster than most of us can keep up. For every success like Snapchat, there are plenty of others that failed to gain any serious momentum, even if they were fun and innovative ideas.

Are you familiar with Vero?

You know Facebook, of course, and Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, LinkedIn, and WhatsApp. They’re good (though not perfect). You probably use them at least once a day.

But we don’t find one platform that we like and stop. According to a recent study of social media in the United States, most people use an average of three of the top eight platforms.

Facebook and YouTube are used by a significant percentage of those on other sites and apps. Consider them the stalwarts. Most people have an account on those two behemoths (Facebook has 2.167 billion and YouTube 1.5 billion users) and at least one other platform.

But do you know Badoo, Snapfish, Tout, or Line? The point is, there are hundreds of social media platforms out there that you’ve never heard of, for virtually every niche, interest, or group of people.

Some won’t make it or be worth your time. But others may be the platform you’ve been looking for…

And that brings us back to Vero.

What is Vero Social Media?

The words “revolutionary” and “game-changer” are tossed around too much these days.

That said, I’m going to throw caution to the wind here. What is the Vero app? It’s nothing less than the evolution of social media. It’s both revolutionary and a game-changer. It’s true social.

Vero labels itself “more social, less media”, and with its focus on providing a natural and ad-free experience, it’s hard to argue with it. According to Google Trends, Vero’s popularity as a search term has been steady albeit not spectacular over the past year. The spike seen above occurred around the time the Facebook data breach became big news and people were looking for alternatives.

Regardless of why, the app shot up from outside the top 1500 on the App Store, to #566, and finally #1 over the course of just a few days. It has since gone down again, but is seeing faster growth than at any other time in its history. Vero recently passed 3 million downloads.

Vero v. Instagram v. Facebook v. Twitter – Differences

On the surface, the Vero app is very similar to mainstays like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. You can post photos, videos, and links, share locations, or recommend books, music, and films. Others can like and comment on what you share. Sound familiar?

But it distinguishes itself in some very important ways: No ads. No algorithms rearranging your posts and limiting who sees what. No data mining. Chronological feeds.

In fact, Vero makes public its manifesto and business model for anyone interested in what they do, and why they do it. Vero believes that people naturally seek connections, and that explains the explosive growth of social media over the past 10-15 years.

Vero takes the opposite approach. By using a subscription-based model, they’re beholden only to their users.

Every decision, every tweak, every new feature, every change to their design and interface needs to keep their users happy and satisfied. They need to respond to the needs of their users. They have to address the complaints of their users.

The user is the customer. The platform is the product. And that is a revolutionary idea in social media.

But that’s not all. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, LinkedIn, and others want you to spend as much time as possible on their platforms. They want you to engage in mindless scrolling of feeds for hours each and every day, because they collect data on your browsing behavior.

The more users they have, the more they can charge advertisers.

The longer you spend browsing feeds – which are increasingly becoming mostly ads and sponsored content – the more they can parade those statistics in front of their customers.

American adults spend an average of 25.29 minutes per day on Facebook. And they want you to continue doing that.

You don’t need me to tell you that social media is addictive. It’s designed that way. In fact, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter send out notifications intended to pull you back in to their platform over and over again throughout the day.

Here, once again, Vero sets itself apart.

While they do want you to use and enjoy the app, they also want you to be aware of how much time you spend on it.

To that end, there are no push notifications, and they are the first and only social media platform to include usage info on your dashboard. You can quickly see how much time you’ve spent on the app each day and each hour of that day.

The others don’t want you to think about that. Vero very much does. As they say, “social media should enhance your life, not detract from it.”

1. Vero was Launched in 2015

As mentioned earlier, Vero is no overnight success. It was launched in 2015 to little fanfare, and failed to generate much attention. It did reach #45 on the App Store, but quickly fell out of the top 1500 apps on the platform.

Its popularity over the past few years has been steady but unremarkable, with just a few hundred thousand downloads prior to its recent surge. But, as the saying goes, slow and steady wins the race.

Towards the end of February 2018, it had about 500,000 users. It doubled that in just 24 hours, adding 500,000 new users on iOS in the US alone.

Vero hit 3 million registered users on both Android and iOS in March 2018.

2. The App was Started Because of Personal Frustration

The men behind Vero weren’t looking to revolutionize the social media landscape. They were simply frustrated with what was available, and the pain-points of the major platforms.

To begin with, feeds on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are subject to some mysterious algorithm that decides what to show, who to show, and when to show it. Those sites long ago abandoned the chronological feed, showing content from newest to oldest, much to the chagrin of users.

And then, of course, there’s the advertising issue. Over the past few years, the amount of ads and sponsored content in a typical feed has been creeping up. Platforms like Facebook are funded by those advertising dollars, so they’re more concerned with keeping their advertisers happy than their users.

On traditional social media, we tend to overshare and – for lack of a better word – “exaggerate” our accomplishments and activities because it’s going to be seen by everyone.

The team behind the Vero app wanted to eliminate all of that.

3. Posts Can Be Photos, Text, Music, or TV shows

Or places, videos, films, and books. This allows you to truly share where you are, what you’re watching, reading, or listening to with your connections.

The app is geared towards a visual experience – just like Instagram – so even a post about a book you’re recommending will automatically feature an image of the cover. Likewise for a song, album, movie, or television show.

Photos and videos can be shared from your gallery, or you can opt to take a new one with your camera directly in the Vero app.

4. Friends v. Followers

They’re not the same.

Friends are people you actually know in the real world.

Followers (or fans) are those that choose to follow your account for some reason, usually because they enjoy your content.

Would you share some big news or a personal tragedy with strangers on the street? Probably not. You’d go to your close friends. But on social media, it’s an all-or-nothing situation that demands we either share with everyone or no one.

5. Vero is Free. For Now.

The app will eventually work on a subscription model, requiring users to pay a few dollars each year.

When they first launched, Vero planned to give their first million users a free-for-life account, but with their recent uptick in downloads, that offer has been extended.

It won’t last forever, though. In order to provide that ad-free experience, they do need to generate revenue in some way.

The subscription fee – which will likely be less than the price of a cappuccino at Starbucks once every 365 days – will allow them to keep advertisers out and the customer experience their main and only concern.

In addition to that, Vero is using affiliate links on recommendation posts.

Click on a book, song/album, or downloadable film or show, and you’re instantly taken to the corresponding purchase platform where you can opt to buy it. If you do, a small portion of that sale will go to Vero.

6. You Can’t Register for Vero on Their Website

Registration for Vero can only be done via the app. There is no option to sign up on their website.

7. Users Can Categorize “Connections”

This is another key differentiator between Vero and Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and the like. Instead of only having one large group – fans/followers – there are actually four different categories for each connection you make:

8. Vero’s Interface is Different from Facebook and Instagram

You’ll immediately notice the color scheme is nothing like the other platforms. We’ve all experienced the slap-in-the-face bright light that comes with checking your Facebook feed at night. Vero uses a black background with white text and teal highlights. It looks great, and is much easier on your eyes.

There are no usernames on Vero like we see on Instagram and Twitter. You set your first and last name, and that’s what people see on your posts (although there’s nothing stopping you from using something other than your actual name).

And if you’ve ever struggled with making your photo fit the required square or rectangular shape and still look great, you’ll appreciate the fact that Vero accepts images of all shapes and sizes. No cropping required.

You can choose to edit your photos in the app itself – including a variety of filters like Instagram – but you don’t have to make any changes if you don’t want to.

Along the top of your homepage, you see five icons (L-R): search, your user profile, collections (everything shared with you is organized into categories for easy search and retrieval), notifications (you’ll receive one whenever someone wants to connect with you so you can accept and categorize them…but don’t worry, as only you can see what category you’ve assigned them), and chat.

Hit the “+” button to share a new post, and you’re whisked away to the Create Post page. Select your post type – Camera (including stuff from your gallery), Music, Book, Link, Movie/TV, or Place – and share. Make a recommendation (or not), add a comment (or not), and finally select the connection categories that will see it. Done.

From your user profile dashboard, you can manage your connections and account settings, review your previous posts and those shared with you under collections, send and review connection requests, and monitor your usage info.

9. You Can Add an Avatar

I know what you’re thinking: big whoop. All social media platforms let you set a profile picture or avatar. That’s true.

But Vero takes it a step further and lets you set up to three different avatars for the three main categories of connections. Your close friends will see Avatar A, while acquaintances will see Avatar B.

You may want to have a bit of fun with your “close friends” avatar while presenting a more professional image to your “acquaintances”. Head to Settings > Avatars > Use Three Avatars, and select the image you want for each group. Easy.

Should You Join?

It depends. Vero is a relatively new social media network, and that comes with some growing pains and glitches. The app is officially still in Beta.

It has somewhere in the vicinity of 3 million users so far, but that obviously pales in comparison to Facebook’s 2+ billion, Instagram’s 800 million, or Twitter’s 330 million. If you’re looking for everyone to be there, you may want to wait a bit longer.

Some big names have already jumped on the bandwagon, though, including Rita Ora, Selena Gomez, and Zack Snyder. Look for the check mark icon to indicate an official and verified profile, but be aware that your favorite guilty pleasure (Kim Kardashian, anyone?) may not be there.

But – and this is very important – if you’re tired of the ads, the algorithms, and the extinction of the chronological feed, then yes, you should join.

How to Use Vero

If you’ve ever signed up for a social media account, you’ll find Vero a breeze to get going. Even if you’ve never had a social media profile (those people still exist, right?), you’ll still find it a piece of cake.

1. Download the Vero app

Vero is available for both iOS and Android.

2. Sign up

Once you’ve downloaded and installed the app, you’ll have to provide a few details to get registered: your first and last name, your email address, and your mobile phone number. Within seconds, you should receive a text message with a 4-digit PIN that you need to enter in order to continue. This is used to verify your telephone.

3. Add an avatar

After registering and verifying your details, you can write your brief bio – you’re given up to 150 characters – and select your avatar from either your image gallery, or by taking a new photo within Vero itself.

4. Add connections

Your feed may look a little neglected at first because you’re not following anyone and you haven’t posted anything yet. But that’s easy to fix.

You can search for profiles to follow by name, hashtag, or keywords. Find the personalities and brands that matter to you, and follow them. Reach out to your friends, and connect (and assign them an appropriate connection category).

Add new connections at any time by clicking the teal + in the top-right corner on your connections dashboard.

Another great feature in Vero is the ability to filter what you see from every connection. Have that one friend who posts 30+ cat videos every day of the week? Turn off videos for that one person, and those damn cats will never clog your feed again.

5. Start posting

With a few connections under your belt, click the “+” button and make your first post. Share what you’re reading, watching, or listening to right now. Or let others know where you are right now. Or share a thought, photo, or video.

With its unparalleled control, you only share what you want with whom you want, and only see what you want from whom you want.

And everyone sees it all ad-free and in chronological order.

Social media isn’t going anywhere. Social media marketing is a crucial cog for any business or brand. Platforms rise. Platforms fall.
