One thing I do like is how the prequel makes him feel human, it would be so easy to just have him be pure evil, but they didn't, instead you can see his start of darkness, and you see how things might've been different, but they arnt. Like there's very few stories that get it right imo. As of rn there is only one or two other stories I think do a character list John better
oh my god they wrote john so well. i saw an interview from drake rodger, the guy who's playing him in the show and he said it was like a breaking bad type of deal where you see john slowly get worse and worse until he gets to the point that he's at in supernatural and like. honestly yeah that's the best comparison i can think of for it
and it's kind of really sad to watch because like. fuck john winchester obviously, the show makes no attempts to redeem him and it's nice to see. but you can also see how mary, carlos, and lata are trying to help him with his anger issues. they're trying so hard and you can see him trying to get better too. john seems very aware of how his trauma affects him
and there are parts of the show where you can kind of see sam and dean in him, when he calls out mary's dad for keeping her in the hunter lifestyle when it clearly wasn't what she wanted. or when he actually genuinely tries to help people by hunting
but every prequel is kind of a tragedy by nature and part of the tragedy is that john eventually lets the anger win, one way or another. he's going to end up becoming everything he hates
