In an effort to procrastinate working on my thesis, here is a compilation of (some of) the best things I have ever read. Books that I read over and over again, short stories that I haven't been able to forget for over a decade, articles and essays and experimental writings that kept me up until 3am trying to figure out their meaning. Hopefully you can find something new here that you haven't read yet!
SHORTS:
A Collapse of Horses by Brian Evenson - a man discovers that his house changes every night, but he's the only one who can see it, and he soon finds himself unable to cope with it. I keep coming back to this one over and over. It's a beautiful tale of grief, doubt, loneliness, and I find that it means something else to me each time I read it. Would you have turned to look at the horses?
The Cafeteria in the Evening and a Pool in the Rain by Yoko Ogawa - a woman meets a mysterious man and his son, fascinated by the local cafeteria. Similar to A Collapse of Horses in a way I can't quite put in words. A sister story, perhaps, but less fantastical. If you've ever seen Posession this story made me think of the line about god being under a porch with a dying dog.
Star, Bright by Mark Clifton - journal of a father whose little daughter turns out to be a genius capable of mind reading and time travel. When I was a child I wasted hours trying to figure out her method in hopes it was real and I could travel like that too. Definitely an interesting concept.
Borrasca by C. K. Walker - a young boy moves with his family to a small town in the mountains, and soon after that his sister goes missing. Beautiful, sad, horryfing all at once. I remember at times forgetting that it was a horror story and getting lost in that little town only to be faced with that ending. Big, big TW for sexual abuse.
The Road Virus Heads North by Stephen King - a horror writer buys a bizzare painting at a yard sale, and weird things start happening. The only one of King's stories I ever enjoyed reading so I thought I'd add it.
The Eradication of “Talmudic Abstractions”: Anti-Semitism, Transmisogyny and the National Socialist Project by Joni Alizah Cohen - to quote directly from it, "2018 has seen a vast rise in anti-Semitic violence globally. Similarly, violence against trans people, and trans women of colour in particular, has continued to rise exponentially. Is there link between the simultaneous rise in anti-semitism, the resurgence of the far-right, and the rise in transfemicide? In this article Joni Alizah Cohen analyses the structure of Nazi ideology for the key to understanding the present crisis".
38 by Layli Long Soldier - a poem about the Dakota 38. I love that you can also listen to the author reading it, to fully understand what she was going for. Definitely a "food for thought" kind of read.
The Dutch Village Where Everyone Has Dementia by Josh Planos - a look at a village that is, in its entirety, a nursing home, and at how we treat dementia in general. I find the topic of memory loss to be incredibely fascinating so this was right up my alley.
The Freudian Coverup by Florence Rush - while we all know that Freud's ideas, especially the concept of Odipeus complex, are simply bullshit I don't think many of us know how close he was to actually understanding trauma. I certainly didn't before I read this, and I've been studying psychology for 5 years now. I don't know if I would say there was malice to his theory, but there certainly wasn't any honesty in it. TW for child sexual abuse. If you don't have a subscription you can use Sci-Hub to get access to this.
BOOKS:
Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card - a young boy is chosen as one of the children being trained to soon lead Earth in the fight against aliens. While at times hard to read because of the hardships and abuse all the children face, to me it's a beautiful tale of friendship and love and goodness of humanity that prevails even when faced with horrific circumstances. DO NOT watch the movie tho. Also I'm not a fan of the other books but if you're interested, yes, this is a start of a series.
Hotel Paradise by Martha Grimes - a 12 year old girl living in her family's run-down hotel in the middle of nowhere begins investigating the drowning of another girl that took place decades ago. I first read this series when I was 12 myself and since then this series has always felt like home. It's always summer there, and reading Emma's descriptions of her mother's cooking makes me feel like I'm sitting with her at the table. It's vivid and welcoming and the characters feel like they're your friends and it has been a pleasure to grow up with these books and see how my perspective on them changed. There are three more titles so far, but the story doesn't seem finished.
The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat by Oliver Sacks - a collection of tales of Sacks' patients with various neurological issues. Great read if you're interested in how the brain works, but even if neurology and psychology aren't your thing this is still a wonderful look at what makes us human. Sacks writes with such ease and beauty and you can sense the care he has for all his patients.
The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury - a whole collection of short stories, detailing the exploration and settlement of Mars in the years 1999-2026. If you're not feeling like reading the whole collection my personal favorite is The Third Expedition; it really scared me as a child and I never forgot it. And I would recommend looking into Bradbury's writing in general.
Revenge: Eleven Dark Tales by Yoko Ogawa - another collection of short stories that connect and intertwine and create a narrative comparable to a maze or a spider's web or one of those russian dolls that have another doll in them. You could theorethically just read them on their own but it takes away most of the fun of this book.
THE UNABOMBER PACKAGE:
Look, I wanted to put his manifesto on here because I do truly believe it's a super interesting read, but you need to have context. You can start with just the Wikipedia page, but here are additional things I highly recommend reading:
A Stranger in the Family Picture by Serge F. Kovaleski and Lorraine Adams - an article about his childhood, including some stories from his mother. Definitely biased but good start if you wanna go in a chronological order.
Harvard and the Making of the Unabomber by Alston Chase - written by another Harvard atendee it's a description of Kaczynski's college years and, most importantly, the very unethical psychological experiment he was a subject of.
Gender confusion, sex change idea fueled Kaczynski's rage, report says - definitely not as much info as I'd like but it's another snippet into just how many things were happening in his head and how he dealt with them.
Excerpts From Unabomber's Journal - it's very important that you read these and "hear" him talk, in his own words, about why he did what he did. Especially if you feel some sympathy for him after reading the previous articles it's important to read these and see who he really was. If you do not have a subscription to NYTimes just click Esc before it fully loads and before! the paywall popup appears and you can read it for free.
Prisoner of Rage - A special report. From a Child of Promise to the Unabom Suspect by Robert D. McFadden - longer than previous articles it's a pretty good summary of everything. Use the Esc trick again to read it.
To Unabomb Victims, a Deeper Mystery by George Lardner and Lorraine Adams - also a very important read. Given how much conversation is focused on Kaczynski himself and his life it is crucial to remember his victims and hear their voices.
Every Last Tie: The Story of the Unabomber and His Family by David Kaczynski - a book written by his brother. I found it to be surprisingly well-written and quite heartbreaking.
Industrial Society and Its Future by Theodore Kaczynski - finally, the manifesto. I am begging you to read this carefully and critically. Do your research and keep in mind his journal excerpts and the victim's stories when engaging with this. I understand how fascinating it is, I just wrote you a paragraph full of resources, but please. This man is not your friend.
BLOGS/WEBSITES/ONLINE PROJECTS:
Time Cube by Otis Eugene Ray - an archived website presenting Ray's ideas about time being... cubic. According to him each day is really four days at once, and he describes four important points in time and space - one where Jesus lives, one for Socrates, one for Einstein and one for the Clintons. Yes like Bill Clinton. The website is a mess and it is clear that Ray was not in his right mind while writing it. I recommend treating it like a scavenger hunt - there are different versions of the website, from different years, archived on the Wayback Machine, and there's plenty of tabs you can click. The text is chaotic, he changes fonts and colors, one minute he's talking about time the next he's yelling at you and calling god a queer. But every once in a while there will be a quote that just... moves you. So if you have some time to kill sit down, maybe have a drink, and search for some accidental poetry there, it's great fun. My personal favorite quote is "Without deed, word starves. Word god lends not a hand". You can also check out a lecture he gave at Georgia Tech in 2005.
What football will look like in the future by Jon Bois - totally normal sports article nothing to see here :) about football yes. Why would you ask. What else would it be about? (Seriosuly tho, I don't wanna spoil this, it's great fun to read this and try to figure out what is going on. I never came across any vision of the future similar to this one, it's very refreshing).
my father's long, long legs by Michael Lutz - a fairly classic short scary story, but with the added element of being interactive. It gets quite creepy once you go underground, but don't worry, there aren't any jumpscares.

With 4 girls left in the running Devonte travelled to their home towns to see where they're from and meet their families before deciding which one he couldn't see himself being a part of.

First Devonte was headed off to Madison, Wisconsin to spend some time with Tuesday and her family. During the afternoon Tuesday took him to her favorite local hangout, a witchy themed bar and magic shop where she often gets supplies to practice her herbalism. Her witch genealogy rarely coming up she was excited to talk about it more with Devonte. They spent some time playing foosball together before relaxing in the under ground springs as Tuesday debriefed him on her family. Then it was time to head home where Devonte and Tuesday prepared a lovely dinner for her family. First he spoke with her father Callum, the two having a lovely chat before her mother Caitlin entered the room. As is Devonte's style, he made a light pass at her mom to break the ice which did not go over very well with anyone in the room leaving them to a brief, awkward conversation before he went to spend some time with her siblings. Tuesday's younger teen sister Selena is like Tuesday's prodigy, the two being very close, so Devonte knew her opinion would be the most important. They had a long chat in the living room where they hit it off well, Selena really taking a liking to Devonte, before Tuesday's younger brother Finley finally came downstairs to join the conversation. They had a brief but good conversation as Devonte realized just how close in age he was to Tuesday's younger brother, wondering if that was strange for Tuesday despite it never coming up. After one last group convo with the whole family, he and Tuesday had a moment alone outside before he had to leave. Tuesday stayed out of the family affair most of the time, but she seemed impressed with how Devonte handled it and pleased overall with how the night had gone, the two even sharing an intimate cuddle before Devonte had to leave.

Next our bachelor was headed to Plano, Texas to meet with Haylee and her family. Haylee took Devonte on a date to her favorite bookstore and hangout space where she did her vampire lore research and wrote her books, wanting to share this special place with him. Throughout the date the two seemed to be getting flirtier with each other than they really had in the past, clearly enjoying each other's company. Back at the house it was time for Devonte to meet with Haylee's family. He headed upstairs to speak with her father Alan. Coming from a prestigious line of vampires, Alan being the current head of the clan, it was vital to make a good impression with him. Devonte knew Haylee looks up to her father a great deal, and intimidating as he is, Devonte sat down with him to have a lovely little chat, her mother Winifred joining half way through. Not learning from yesterday, Devonte tried to break the ice with a small flirt towards Haylee's mom as well, that she was very charmed by but definitely pissed off Alan. Noticing the tension Devonte quickly fled to the kitchen to meet with Haylee's eldest brother Ivan, whom she had a decent relationship with, but not very close due to their age difference. The two got on great, Devonte realizing they had a lot in common and actually being pretty good friends with Ivan before going to speak with Dajvah, the middle child. Haylee had warned Devonte that Dajvah's deep jealousy of her bond with their father, him wanting to become the next leader of their clan. Despite Haylee not caring too much about his opinion, Devonte still tried to talk with him, which quickly devolved into an argument. Tensions were brewing in the other room too as Alan told Haylee about the pass Devonte made at Winifred, and that he had reservations about Devonte. It turned into a massive argument, Haylee distraught her father did not like the man she was falling for. taking Devonte outside to WooHoo in the garden to let off some steam before he had to leave.

Up next was a trip to Birmingham, Alabama to meet with Johanna's family. The two headed to the lounge Johanna spent her nights performing at for a date, both happy to be back with each other. They spent a long while chatting and flirting before Johanna showed off her violin skills, serenading Devonte. Johanna has a large family with a lot of complicated dynamics so Devonte was nervous to navigate it all, especially since it had been a long time since Johanna spent time with her siblings and was clearly nervous as well. First he spoke with her younger brother Dayton, who sees Johanna as a troublemaker and was not fond of her. This time Johanna's mom Francine actually made a pass at Devonte, him awkwardly rejecting it before talking with Johanna's kid sister Madeleine, who really dislikes Johanna and resents her for getting most of their parents' attention. Devonte actually got along with her and tried to help mend the sisters' relationship with each other. He had a good conversation with her father Noah, before joining Johanna and her brother Dayton on the porch. Knowing Dayton was really close to Johanna and that his opinion would be vital he made sure to make a good impression. He did a good job making sure Johanna was alright as her final brother Montel who disliked her briskly joined the conversation. At the end of the night Madeleine actually joined the conversation, having a sweet moment with her sister for the first time in years, making it known that Devonte urged her to do so. The way our bachelor handled everything really meant a lot to Johanna and they shared a few sweet moments out by the pool, Johanna expressing her gratitude for him and how much she cared before he had to head out to his last destination.

Lastly Devonte landed in Orlando, Florida for a meetup with Delphine and her family. Delphine took him on a date to the dog park where she trains animals on the side. They seemed pretty smitten with each other chatting away and spending time with all the dogs that showed up. It really warmed Delphine's heart to see him interacting with the animals. She told him over a game of chess that she was nervous for the family meeting as there was some lingering tension she was worried about. Delphine opened up about how she had a bit of a wild streak back in high school, getting a little rebellious, getting a tattoo, staying out late, and making out with a lot of guys, including a boy that her sister had a crush on. Her sister Kristen being very prim and proper was highly against this behavior and even though it had been years, still held a grudge against Delphine for it all and the fact that their parents were so forgiving towards her. At the home Devonte had a brief but nice chat with her mom Isabelle before biting the bullet and talking to said sister. Kristen finally seeing an opportunity to get back at her sister tried to get Devonte into bed, but Delphine noticed her sister's efforts from afar and decided to confront her. Devonte went to have a small chat with her father Cleavant, leaving the ladies to discuss things. Hearing the shouting from the other room Devonte quickly rushed back to the argument where Kristen tried to make another pass at him right in front of her sister this time. He tried to smooth things over but it was too late as the sisters got into a massive physical altercation. Delphine angrily took Devonte outside after knocking her sister out to try and calm down. She was grateful Devonte was there and they had a long talk about how she felt good to finally stand up to her sister, ending the night on a good bonding moment for the two.

Finally it was time for the rose ceremony where one lady would be sent home, giving us the final 3. The first rose went to Haylee, their bond incredibly strong after her tumultuous hometown, Devonte really seeing her commitment to him after she stood up for him to her father. The next rose was to Johanna, feeling closer than ever after being able to mend a family rift between her and her little sister. Then it came down to Delphine and Tuesday. Despite Tuesday's hometown going relatively well she was pretty detached from the experience, but the two had been getting flirtier each week. Was it a lasting romantic bond or just an attraction though? As for Delphine their love story had been growing until she found herself in the bottom two this week and last. Her hometown was easily the most dramatic after getting into a fist fight with her sister. Was letting old drama come to blows able to solidify Devonte's care for her, or did the drama too much for him? It turns out the fight let Devonte realize just how much he cared for Delphine, and she received the final rose, which meant Tuesday was leaving the competition in 4th place. After seeing how bonded he felt with the other girls after meeting the families, he realized he adored Tuesday but only as a best friend, and this week finally let him come to terms with the fact that their romantic bond was not there like it was with the others. Thankfully Tuesday had come to the same conclusion that week, and she left with a smile wishing him luck with the others, both of them knowing they'd found a lifelong friend in one another at least.

Only 3 remain, as Devonte takes the last ladies to Salvadorado for a jungle getaway and to spend some more one-on-one time with each of them as we reach fantasy suite week!

As competições da Semana Beneficente não deveriam ser levadas tão à sério, afinal, era apenas uma maneira alternativa dos estudantes se divertirem enquanto recolhiam fundos para uma boa causa, além de que os jurados da patinação seriam os próprios visitantes e funcionários do colégio. E Chloe sabia muito bem de tudo isso, mas ainda assim encontrava-se incrivelmente ansiosa desde o dia em que se inscreveu para a competição. Motivo? Encontrava-se sozinha pela primeira vez, sem o apoio emocional e financeiro de seus pais, precisando se virar da forma como conseguia mesmo que isso significasse poucas horas de sono e um incrível desgaste físico e psicológico. Por mais que a competição não significasse mais que uma medalha para muitos participantes, o peso de se provar para si mesma era o que afligia a Astley.
Se falhasse, nem mesmo seus pensamentos mais positivos veriam futuro na única coisa em sua vida que era uma certeza.
Estudar, trabalhar e treinar era um desafio que a loira não tivera a chance de experimentar de fato, pois aquela seria sua primeira competição e, apesar de sua rotina diária já ser bem pesada, nunca havia a vivenciado com uma mente perturbada e ansiosa. Com coreografia própria, mas com diversas inspirações e influências, Chloe treinava cada elemento sempre que podia na pista de patinação do colégio ou no centro esportivo da cidade após o trabalho, pedindo ajuda dos treinadores que apareciam por lá enquanto deslizava pelo gelo e se virando em se julgar através de gravações próprias. Cada queda (que foram várias) causando-lhe frustração e lágrimas, porém sempre tentando se manter de cabeça erguida.
Foram dias pesados para uma competição tão informal e Astley, ironicamente, não sentia um pingo de confiança, precisando se esforçar para abandonar o pensamento de reapresentar um programa antigo seu enquanto checava a sua bolsa pela última vez antes de sair de casa. Foi com o peito pesado e a mente caótica que a loira recebeu o primeiro sinal luminoso, praticamente divino, de que tudo estaria bem. Um suave sorriso iluminou seu semblante com as mensagens de Christopher, algumas lágrimas rolando pelas suas bochechas, pois a conversa sobre vê-lo como um estudante comum da Armstrong não excluía a admiração que sentia por ele como patinador e ser reconhecida daquela forma carregava um enorme significado para a loira. E, no evento, um novo sinal lhe surgiu. Dessa vez, no formato de uma simpática iniciativa de Heaton em lhe desejar boa sorte antes da competição. Ainda o considerava uma peça importante de sua vida, mesmo que não passassem o tempo juntos como antes, então aquela troca de positividade, especialmente depois do desabafo feito no Halloween, mostrava para a garota que o sentimento era recíproco e isso foi extremamente precioso — sabia que nada era certo e a atitude dele poderia ter outros significados, mas Chloe se agarrava naquela carinhosa sensação. Claro que não esqueceria das boas energias exaladas pelos seus amigos, os surtos de Nathaniel e Nimue na plateia antes mesmo de deslizar até o centro da pista, como pelas outras patinadoras que aguardaram consigo, Sage e Araminta.
Com o coração acelerado e a adrenalina já tomando conta de seu interior, Astley tremia em sua pose inicial esperando o início da canção. “Dog Days Are Over” não foi uma música escolhida em vão e, com ela, buscava atrair todos os sentimentos libertação que almejava para seguir com seus planos futuros. Seus movimentos suaves faziam-na flutuar sobre o gelo, traços leves e um sorriso iluminavam seu semblante à medida que abandonava seus piores pensamentos para aproveitar cada segundo de sua performance pela primeira vez. Seu lutz triplo não fora perfeito, tocando o chão assim que pousara a fim de manter seu equilíbrio sobre os patins, mas seu axel duplo foi motivo de orgulho, precisando se conter por se tratar da parte mais delicada da coreografia. A garota mergulhava naquele mix de sentimentos e, esquecendo-se da existência de uma plateia, podia jurar que estava sozinha apenas curtindo a patinação assim como fizera anos atrás. Suas primeiras vezes com patins nos pés eram especiais e reviver esses momentos aqueciam seu peito.
No instante em que ergueu sua destra marcando o fim da performance, uma incrível sensação vitoriosa se apossou de si juntamente com emoção. Havia conseguido e ainda superando todas suas expectativas. Independentemente do resultado, aquele foi o sinal que tanto aguardou e, com certeza, choraria assim que saísse dos holofotes do evento. Tudo iria dar certo...

Dad Letter 080220
2 August, 2020
Dear Dad--
August already! Here in Maine, that means a full month of highs in the 80s. (The horror! The horror!) and overnight lows in the 50s and 60s. I love the weather here!
Most of my news this week will be related to the two things occupying most of my time, the new cat Horta, and my new job, starting one week from tomorrow. As for the job, I suppose there isn’t any news, except that I’m supposed to start internet-based training on Monday the 10th, which is six hours a day, and working full time, which is nine to ten hours a day, at the same time. Not sure how that’s supposed to work. Possibly I’ll have to go into their office (with a face mask, interacting with as few people as possible) and work for a while, then do the web-based training in an office somewhere, then working the rest of the shift? Be nice to know this stuff, but the Covid 19 has so upended things there, I’m not sure they’re even going to be ready for me to start working by then. Guess we’ll see!
So, the new kitty. We have named her The Horta, or just Horta. That was a monster from an old episode of Star Trek, called The Devil in the Dark, where a nasty monster starts burning miners to death, and interfering with their very important mining, so Captain Kirk gets called in to fix the monster problem. Remember this one? In the end, they meet the Horta, and she’s obviously a guy under a blanket, rolling around on a skateboard. But it turns out “she” is the mother of her whole race, and the little silver volleyballs everywhere are actually her eggs, and the miners had been thoughtlessly trampling them and destroying them. Once Kirk and Spock figured out she was just protecting her young, they helped her, and the Hortas then helped the miners by digging tunnels for them, which is how the Hortas moved around naturally. Peaceful solution.
So she’s named Horta now, and if we wish, we can call her “Ho” for short. She’s quite the little whirlwind. She has taught me that cats fart, which is not a lesson I’d have looked forward to learning. I’ll be petting her, and suddenly I’m in a silent cloud of green funk, like entering The Smelly Matrix, and I know little Horta is to blame. I never really believed your dogs farted. I always assumed it was a person who was blaming the dog as a misdirection, but NO. Now I know better. I hope this stops once she’s done flushing her system of parasites, because DAMN, kitty.
Zach’s birthday is Tuesday, so I got him a few gifts and I’m going to make something I’ve never seen before, let alone made or eaten one, a hummingbird cake. I’m sure you’re familiar with this, but I just learned of its existence recently, (and thought, a cake made of hummingbirds? That sounds gross.) and now I want to try it. It’s a white cake that’s flavored with mashed bananas and crushed pineapple, with cream cheese frosting and toasted walnuts. (Or pecans, I can’t remember which, but who cares? We all know they’re secretly the same thing.) I’m sure the cake will be edible; I just hope it’s good. He turns 30 on Tuesday! If you count the mileage, though, he’s closer to my age.
- Did I mention that we seem to have fixed my medication, resulting in better sleep and no more throwing up? That continues to hold true, and I’m grateful for it. There’s nothing like a lot of throwing up to remind you how much nicer it is to not throw up at all.
- I got done waxing my priceless Hyundai, Beige Lightning! Now, when it rains, the rain beads and slides off respectably. Obviously I am an upright citizen who takes good care of his chariot.
- One of my biggest concerns was whether The Horta could peacefully coexist with my primary cat Samuel L. Jackson. Turns out, they mostly can. Horta attacks and chases Sam a lot, and Sam does his “I’m too old for this shit,” thing and walks away. No one’s fighting or hissing.
- I have seen that new Tom Hanks movie Greyhound and I deem it to be very good! I don’t think it’s The Longest Day good, but I think it’s Hunt for Red October good! I hope you’ve been able to see it. I think it’s available on Netflix…?
On a final note, have you had an opportunity to see Hamilton? If you get the opportunity, I’d recommend taking it, only MAKE SURE the subtitles are turned on, so you can see what they’re singing. I don’t know if the play’s conceit is going to be a distraction--having all the founding fathers all be played by black and Hispanic people--but that tends to disappear once the musical starts because there’s a lot of plot and history in the story. I love all the shit I’ve learned about Alexander Hamilton. Before, the last time his name was uttered in my presence was probably middle school back in Plano, or before that, in Richardson. Now I know of his humble beginnings (which were pretty damn humble), and how he improved his station by reading everything, and working, and writing, and basically being a very driven guy. And now I remember/learn things like Hamilton’s role in the Revolutionary War, and his relationship with George Washington, and with Aaron Burr, and how his son was killed in a duel. Before I wasn’t even sure what dollar bill he was on.
It’s very engaging to watch, and the music is very good, and they make jokes about Lafayette, and John Adams, and King George III appears a few times, and is hilarious. Definitely fun and worth your time.
By this time next week, I’ll have one day to go before starting the new job, so I expect to be a bundle of nerves. I predict the throwing up will return for a curtain call, and will stop once I’ve worked there for a day or two, assuming the work environment isn’t too toxic. Cautious optimism!

The image of God in man
"Let us make man ... our image, according to our likeness." (See Gen. 5: 1; 9: 6; Ecl. 7:29; Acts 17: 26,28,29; 1 Cor. 11: 7; 2 Cor. 3:18; 4: 4; Ephesians 4:24 ; Col. 1:15; 3:10; Aunt. 3: 9; Isa. 43: 7; Ephesians 2:10.)
Man was created in the likeness of God, he was made as God in character and personality. And in all the Scriptures, the ideal and goal exposed before man is to be like God. (Lev. 19: 2; Matt. 5: 45-48; Ephesians 5: 1.) And to be like God means to be like Christ, who is the image of the invisible God. Let us consider some of the elements that constitute the divine image in man:
1. Relationship with God.
God's relationship with the first living creatures consisted of those, in an inflexible way, obeying the instincts implanted by the Creator; but the life that inspired man was a true result of the personality of God. Man, in fact, has a body made of the dust of the earth, but God breathed life into his nostrils (Gen. 2: 7); in this way it endowed him with a nature capable of knowing, loving and serving God.
Because of this divine image, all men are, by creation, children of God. But since this image has been tainted by sin, men must be recreated or born again (Eph. 4:24) in order to be truly children of God. A Greek scholar points out the fact that one of the Greek words translated for "man" (anthropos) to be a combination of words literally meaning "one who looks up". Man is a creature of prayer, and there is an occasion in the life of the most wicked when they invoke some Supreme Power to help them.
Man may not understand the greatness of his dignity, and thus become similar to the irrationals who perish (Ps. 49:20), but he is not irrational. Even in its degradation, man is a witness of its noble origin, as the animal cannot degrade itself. For example, no one would think of ordering a tiger by saying, "Be a tiger!" He always was and always be a tiger! But the order, "Be a man", takes a real meaning on the one who has degraded himself. No matter how degraded man is, he still recognizes that he should be on a higher plane.
2. Moral character.
The recognition of good and evil belongs only to man. An animal can be taught not to do certain things, but it is because those things are contrary to the owner's will and not because the animal knows that these things are always right and others are always wrong.
In other words, animals have no religious or moral nature; they are not able to be instructed in the truths concerning God and morality. Thus writes a great naturalist: I fully agree with the opinion of the writers who assert that it is the moral sense, that is, conscience, the most important of all the differences between man and the lower animals. This sense is summed up in that short but imperative "must", so full of meaning. It is the most noble of all the attributes of man.
3. Reason.
The animal is merely a creature of nature; man is lord of nature. He is able to reflect on himself and reason about the causes of things. Think of the wonderful inventions that came out of man's mind - the clock, the microscope, the steam, the telegraph, the radio, the adding machine, and others too numerous to mention. Look at the civilization built by the various arts. Consider the books that have been written, the poetry and the music that have been composed. And then worship the Creator for that wonderful gift of reason! The tragedy of history is this: that man has used this gift for destructive purposes, even to deny the Creator who made him a thinking creature.
4. Ability to immortality.
The existence of the tree of life in the Garden of Eden indicates that man would never have died if he had not disobeyed God. Christ came into the world to place the Food of Life within our reach, so that we do not perish, but live forever.
5. Domain over the land.
Man was designed to be the image of God with respect to sovereignty; and since no one can be a monarch without subjects and without a kingdom, God has given him both an "empire" and a "people". God blessed them, and said to them, "Fruit, multiply, fill the earth and subdue it; rule over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the sky, and over all the animals that crawl on the earth" (Gen. 2: 28. See Ps. 8: 5-8.) Because of the powers implied in being man formed in the image of God, all living beings on earth were delivered into his hand.
He was to be God's visible representative of the creatures around him. Man has filled the earth with his productions. It is a special privilege of man to subdue the power of nature at his own will. He, the man, forced the lightning to be his messenger, has circled the globe, ascended to the clouds and penetrated the depths of the sea. He has been pitting the forces of nature against each other, sending the winds to help him face the sea. If man's dominion over external and inanimate nature is so wonderful, even more wonderful is his dominance over animate nature.
Watch the trained falcon drop its prey at its owner's feet and return when the great spaces invite him to freedom; watch the dog use its speed in the service of the owner, take the prey that will not be his; watch the camel transport the man across the desert, his own home. All of them show the creative capacity of man and his resemblance to God the Creator. The fall of man resulted in the loss and disfigurement of the divine image.
This is not to say that mental and psychic powers (the soul) have been lost; but that the original innocence and moral integrity, in which he was raised, were lost by his disobedience. Therefore, man is absolutely unable to save himself and is hopeless, except for an act of grace that restores his divine image. This matter will be dealt with in more detail in the next chapter. ... O homem foi criado à semelhança de Deus, foi feito como Deus em caráter e personalidade. E em todas as Escrituras o ideal e alvo exposto diante do homem é o de ser semelhante a Deus. O homem é criado de oração, e ocasião na vida dos mais perversos quando eles invocam um algum Poder Supremo para socorrê-los.
O homem pode não entender a grandeza da sua dignidade, e assim se tornar semelhante aos irracionais que perecem (Sal. 49:20), mas ele não é irracional. Mesmo na sua degradação, o homem é testemunha da sua origem nobre, pois o animal não pode degradar-se. Por exemplo, ninguém pensaria em ordenar a um tigre dizendo: "Sê tigre!" Ele sempre foi e sempre ser tigre! Mas a ordem, "Sê homem", leva um verdadeiro significado àquele que se degradou. Por mais que se tenha o homem degradado, ainda ele reconhece que deveria estar em plano mais elevado.
2. Caráter moral.
O reconhecimento do bem e do mal pertence somente ao homem. Um animal pode-se usar a não fazer certas coisas, mas é porque essas coisas são contrárias à vontade do dono e não porque o animal saiba que estas coisas são sempre corretas e outras sempre erradas.
Em outras palavras, os animais não possuem natureza religiosa ou moral; não são capazes de ser instruídos nas verdades concernentes a Deus e à moralidade. Assim chamado um grande naturalista: Concordo plenamente com a opinião dos escritores que asseguram ser o sentido moral, ou seja, a consciência, a mais importante de todas as diferenças entre o homem e os animais inferiores. Esse sentido está resumido naquele curto mas imperioso "deve", tão cheio de significação. É o mais nobre de todos os atributos do homem.
3. Razão.
O animal é meramente uma criatura da natureza; o homem é senhor da natureza. Ele é capaz de refletir sobre si próprio e arrazoar a respeito das causas das coisas. Pensem nas invenções maravilhosas que surgiram da mente do homem - o relógio, o microscópio, o vapor, o telégrafo, o rádio, a máquina de somar, e outras numerosas demais para se mencionar. Olhem a civilização construída pelas diversas artes. Considerem os livros que foram escritos, a poesia e a música que foram compostas. E então adorem ao Criador por esse dom maravilhoso da razão! A tragédia da história é esta: que o homem tem usado esse dom para propósitos destrutivos, até mesmo para negar o Criador que o fez uma criatura pensante.
4. Capacidade para a imortalidade.
A existência da árvore da vida no Jardim do Éden indica que o homem nunca teria morrido se não tivesse desobedecido a Deus. Cristo veio ao mundo para colocar um Alimento da Vida ao nosso alcance, para que não pereçamos, mas vivamos para sempre.
5. Domínio sobre a terra.
O homem foi designado para ser a imagem de Deus com respeito à soberania; e como ninguém pode ser monarca sem súditos e sem reino, Deus deu-lhe tanto um "império" como um "povo". Deus os abençoou, e lhes disse: "Frutificai, multiplicai-vos, enchei a terra e encontroui-a; dominai sobre os peixes do mar, sobre as aves do céu e sobre todos os animais que se arrastam sobre a terra" (Gên. 2: 28.Vide Sal. 8: 5-8.) Em virtude dos poderes implícitos em ser o homem formado à imagem de Deus, todos os seres viventes sobre a terra estavam entregues na sua mão.
Ele deve ser o representante visível de Deus em relação às criaturas que o rodeavam. O homem tem enchido a terra com as suas produções. É um privilégio especial do homem subjugar o poder da natureza à sua própria vontade. Ele, o homem, obrigou o relâmpago a ser o seu mensageiro, tem circundado o globo, subido até às nuvens e penetrado as profundezas do mar. Ele tem jogado como quadro da natureza umas contra as outras, mandando os ventos ajudá-lo em enfrentar o mar. Se é tão maravilhoso o domínio do homem sobre a natureza externa e inanimada, mais maravilhoso ainda é o seu domínio sobre a natureza animada.
Vejam o falcão treinado derribar a presa aos pés do seu dono e voltar quando os grandes espaços o convidam à liberdade; vejam o cão usar a sua velocidade a serviço do dono, tomar a presa que não será sua; vejam o camelo transportar o homem através do deserto, sua própria habitação. Todos eles mostram uma capacidade criadora do homem e a sua semelhança com Deus o Criador. A queda do homem resultou na perda e sem desfiguramento da imagem divina.
Isto não quer dizer que os poderes mentais e psíquicos (a alma) foram perdidos; mas que a inocência original e a integridade moral, nas quais foi criado, foram perdidas por sua desobediência. Portanto, o homem é absolutamente incapaz de salvar-se a si mesmo e está sem esperança, a não ser por um ato de graça que restaure a imagem divina.Este assunto será tratado mais detalhadamente no capítulo seguinte.

I loooovvvvveeee taking Teddy on a walk or run (whatever Ted is feeling that day) and leaving my phone at home to be in my own headspace and one with nature if we go through Arbor Hills! I also love to listen to one of my new fav podcast “The Last Podcast on the Left” which is about anything from conspiracy theories to true crime or historical facts (history has ALWAYS been my fav subject) while cooking or cleaning around the house! Maybe its the Mexi in me but cleaning is a huge reliever for me! Clean house = happy lil becky!
Our favorite cleaning products? Mrs. Meyers infused with essential oils.

I LOVE getting in my kitchen and cooking a yummy meal. I always start with a trip to the grocery store (probs Trader Joes) to pick up the ingredients.. I'm one of those weird humans that find grocery shopping SO therapeutic. I am currently OBSESSED with Alex from the Defined Dish, who just so happens to be a Dallas gal! One of my favorites right now is her Shrimp Remoulade Lettuce Cups recipe! Of course, finishing it off with some healthy sweet treats, like this Banana Bread!
This all happens while I'm listening to one of my favorite light hearted podcasts, The Lady Gang. When things get off track, a good belly laugh and a great healthy meal is always a great reset!

I start my day with quiet time every morning accompanied by my devotional (@jesuscalling) and podcasts The Porch.
After quiet time, I take about 5-10 minutes every hour at work to listen to a few songs that make me happy (no shocker that Jess Glynne and Betty Who are at the top for me rn)
After work, I love walks on the Katy Trail or White Rock Lake, wine bars (leelas always) and cooking meals with my friends (favorite food blogger is definitely skinny taste). At night I try my hardest to unplug and focus on friends/family as much as possible.

This music definitely isn’t everyone’s thing, but the band August Burns Red has picked me up when I’m down, pushed my butt through tough workouts, gotten me focused at work, you name it, more times than I can count. Their lyrics are really powerful, and they wrote one of my all time favorites:
“Don’t excuse yourself from life today on the pretense of your past.” Let that sink in.
Alt response: I pet my dog or take him for a walk if he’s nearby, or just look at pictures of him on my phone because he’s stinking cute and it’s a good reminder that I need to keep it together for the people who love me and doggos that depend on me.

One of my favorite things to do (other than a good sweat sesh on the bike) is surfing. I used to go out to California and surf at San Clemente beach all the time when I was younger. It was a great way to slow down my mind and be focused on the present moment. HOWEVER there aren’t many beaches in d-town so I usually hop into a pool and swim it out or roll out my yoga mat at Hot Body Yoga. It’s a great way to control my breathing and something about being under water is relaxing to me.
When I need to get sh!t done, one of My favorite coffee shops is Global Peace. You can usually find me there writing or emailing with a cappuccino in hand. Also I LOVE coffee. Oh did I say love, I meant I’m addicted. Same thing right?
I’m also a BIG fan of live music and on the weekend if anyone is in town playing I try to make an effort to go out and support. It helps me get out of my head and is a good excuse to just sit back and enjoy some of my favorite tunes. My must see bands are: night riots, jet black alley cat, band Camino, State champs, Greta Van Fleet and Marianas Trench.

I love, and wish I did it more, putting my phone away when I’m home and being in the moment with my family (but of course grabbing it to document Noah dance parties and special memories). Five minutes with my son (if he is napped and fed 🙈) can cure five bad days.
Between teaching/training clients/and all the hustle I also really enjoy silence. I rarely listen to music while driving nowadays because I’ve found that my mind tries to start programming and/or choreographing whenever a song is playing- so having quiet time to disconnect is important. I also love to jump in a class and go into student mode.

When the weather is nice, I love doing outdoor activities and being near water! Paddle boarding, swimming, and BBQing are my go-to day-off favs. I also enjoy a homemade coffee in the morning to kick start my day and going out back to wake up and check on my pepper plants and succulents. Planting is very peaceful to me. I love watching things grow.

Outside of teaching, I love group fitness and enjoy taking classes at LYNC and around Dallas to let out nervous energy. I like to decompress by reading, listening to podcasts, and listening to LANY and John Mayer.
I listen to The Morning Toast and The Lady Gang - totally light hearted, but makes me bust out laughing in the car and puts me in a good mood before teaching.

To stay motivated, I read... a lot. I read everything from nonfiction true crime stories and self development books to fiction novels to self-published articles on Medium. You can catch me searching my inbox at the Barnes & Noble check-out line for a coupon for a new book or sitting at Mudleaf Coffee shop (a super cool space in Plano) with headphones in listening to Audible.
My go-to read is anything by Brené Brown (Daring Greatly is my fave). She is a vulnerability researcher, specializing in shame. (wow, couldn’t we all dive a little deeper into that?)
I also love to listen to Gary Vee’s Podcast to keep me focused in the business world. He touches on marketing tactics, struggles in business and life, leadership development and more–and TBH he’s just brutally honest and sometimes I just need a good kick in the ass and for someone to tell it to me straight.

I like to take 10-15 minutes out of my morning to meditate to help level set me at the beginning of my day. My favorite app is “10% Happier” because it has courses, guided and unguided meditations and you can customize the time to whatever fits your schedule!

I love a good story. I’m old school and really enjoy going to the bookstore and getting a physical copy. Lately my favorites have been ‘This Is How It Always Is’ and ‘Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine’. Put it with quiet time outside in the sun or snuggled with coffee and my puppy in the morning - foolproof feel good.

I love going to Title Boxing to punch out all of my feelings. Whether I need a release or am excited and want to celebrate an hour of hard work–gallons of sweat at Title is always the move for me.
I also love to take long walks on the weekends with my fave gal pals, Allison, Leina, Izzy, and Madeline to La La Land Kind Cafe or Bird Bakery. We almost always indulge in a sweet treat which for me is the perfect way to celebrate a week well done.

The main thing I do at the moment to recharge is get a good nights sleep. Being in bed by 9pm really excites me, haha!
Also, getting some vitamin D and tanning by the pool on the weekends always puts me in a good mood. I usually end up falling asleep there too lol.

I’d say personal time is the best way to recharge for me! I love walking the Katy Trail while getting out for some sunshine or hot yoga. Hot yoga is such a release for me because It not only calms the mind but gives me a good stretch! My favorite hot Yoga is at Core Power.
I’ve recently been loving EVERY recipe from The Defined Dish who makes clean/easy/whole30 approved meals. Her meals are so tasty and simple to make! Feel good guilty treat that is guaranteed to make any day better is ice cream!
Calling my family always lifts me up and keeps me rooted! I also really try to put my phone down while at home for 30 minutes at the end of the day and engage in something other than scrolling mindlessly on social media which helps me reconnect with myself and surroundings.\
