there's an interesting power play that often happens between them. though anthony societally holds all of the power in their relationship, when they're in the private of their bed chambers, it's often quite an even split between the two of them. there's a gentle tug of war that both of them whole-heartedly enjoy— well, anthony certainly enjoys it, at the very least. whether or not hetty feels the same remains to be seen. her insistence that he kiss her gives him pause, stopping inches away from her lips when he had already been planning on doing just that. ‘ is that an order, miss hughes? ’ the corners of his mouth curl upwards, his eyes locking with hers to make sure that she knows that his intentions are to tease her in this moment. and it would just be so easy to lean forwards to kiss her. it is, after all, what he wants. but the gratification that comes from drawing it out will only make it far more satisfying in the end. ‘ i hadn't realised that was the game that we were playing this evening. ’

Daphne is, for the most part, a very well behaved young lady. She knows that the eyes of society are upon her, and she must uphold a certain level of poise and decorum in order to protect her reputation. But, that doesn’t mean she is immune to getting ideas. Now of course she’s nowhere near as rebellious as her younger sister, but she’s not one to pass up an opportunity to sneak away from the watchful gaze of her older brothers (a feat to be proud of) and mingle amongst the other opera attendees for a brief moment of freedom.

She spots a certain soprano from far across the room, and weaves her way through the crowd towards Hetty with two glasses in hand. Before her friend even has a chance to speak, Daphne offers her the other glass with a devious quiet smile. Her eyes flick surreptitiously to where both Anthony and Benedict remain rapt in conversation, for the moment blissfully ignorant of their sister’s disappearance, signaling her escape.

‘They started arguing about Benedict 'applying himself', it was the perfect opportunity to slip away. Heaven knows Anthony will have some choice words for me later, but I’ve found one has to act when you have the chance.’ Daphne suppresses a laugh, taking a sip from her drink.

“I attended more operas back home than you might expect.” His green eyes are bright with something that might appear to be slightly starstruck curiosity. He is, as far as anyone knows, the American friend of a prestigious man in town. Louis charmed him enough to have a discreet place to stay while he’s in the city and some access to places he might not otherwise be welcome. “But I’ve been told the real talent, when they visit my country at all, don’t travel too far south. I didn’t know if I believed it until tonight.”

Naturally, the words were enough to have that usual pink flush spread itself across Balfour's face. She'd cut deep, with that shame of feeling - all too deeply and all at once. Balfour turned his eyes away, just momentarily, frowning as he tried to think of a level response. He rubbed at his jaw.

"I can't tell if you think that's a bad thing or not." It begged the question - though, he wasn't sure he wanted an answer.

twelve — what is something that will always make your muse laugh?

he doesn’t laugh much, but if anything can get him to do so, it’s the antics of children. he really, really loves kids, and he especially loves kids who are just a bit weird and chaotic. adults can almost never make him actually laugh, but kids will just come out with the wildest statements or questions and he can’t help but snort. nonsensical child humour is better than anything an adult could come up with.

thirteen — what would your muse consider their best physical feature?

it’s not really... something he considers that much?? he’s never thought of himself as handsome, but that’s also not something that particularly bothers him. he just doesn’t care that much about his appearance. the only times he really thinks about whether an attribute of his is attractive / handsome is when peter compliments it, tbh. in that vein, then, probably his eyes — he’s always thought they’re a little too pale and icy, but peter has complimented them so much that he’s started to feel a bit more confident in their uniqueness. 

twenty-seven — when it comes to gift giving, does your muse tend to lean funny, practical, thoughtful? 

thoughtful, definitely. he doesn’t focus on holidays or birthdays very much, but he’s the sort who will just hand you a gift completely at random because he saw it somewhere and he thought you’d like it. books that his friends and colleagues would find interesting, a trinket that matches his sister’s favourite dress, a specific type of food someone likes that he passed by at the market — he’ll just pick up little things. 

twenty-eight — after a fight, how does your muse go about apologizing/making it up to the other person?

well. uh. he’s lewis, so if he thinks he was in the right and he doesn’t care about the other party on a personal level, he probably... won’t apologise. stubborn ass. if it is someone he cares about, though, he’ll take some time to cool down and reflect, then will approach them a day or two later to make a bit of a stiff apology, usually with a gift to help soften the matter. he’s generally the ‘i’m bad at apologies so un-fuck you or whatever’ person, but he can acknowledge when he’s been wrong if it’s someone whose opinion he cares about, and he will try to make amends. even if he’s not the best at it.

working from home is, more often than not, an incredible boon. he doesn't have to worry about what he's wearing on his lower half so he can slum it in pajamas or tracksuit bottoms if he wants to, though that weird sense of professionalism that he has built inside him doesn't usually allow him to wear anything less than a smart shirt and trousers. more often than not, he looks smarter than the majority of people on his screen who have actually gone in to the office.

it's his last meeting of the day and he's already in a slightly bad mood because it's running over 5pm and he had plans with his brother this evening. but to make matters even worse, he hears the familiar strains of operatic music begin to start up, which can only mean one thing: the bloody opera singer from downstairs is about to start rehearsing, as she always does, at this time. to her credit, she usually waits until after he's finished work, and it wouldn't normally be an issue if his meeting hasn't been 15 minutes over schedule by this point.

and it gets to him. the tips of his index and middle finger being to massage at his temple as he tries to listen to the reports that are being read to him, but all he can hear is her voice as it begins to swell louder and float through the vent in the corner of the room. if he'd known he was going to be paying over a grand a month to live in a flat with poor soundproofing, he would've looked for another building. on the other side of the city. because it's bad enough that london is a hive of activity whenever he actually has to leave his flat, so he shouldn't also have to deal with it when he's trying to relax or work in peace.

his meeting finishes up and it's with a decidedly firmer hand than he'd like that he shuts his laptop, but he'll deal with a potentially broken screen later on. for now, she's still singing, he's pretty sure even louder than before, and he has, officially, had enough. grabbing his keys, he heads out of his flat, takes the staircase ( because she only lives one floor below him ) and finds himself outside her door. he knows that he should probably take a moment to calm himself down, but it's with a heavy fist that he knocks on her door, ignoring the doorbell.

the gloves muffled the sound of lewis’ unenthusiastic gesture of applause. he had never quite understood the appeal of operas in general, but the romantic ones particularly tried his patience. there was nothing entertaining about them, in his opinion, and certainly nothing worth applauding — even to his untrained ears, the singers at tonight’s event had been less than stellar. “ they might have tried to give it a proper story, ” he muttered out of the side of his mouth, “ instead of that. ”
