4399 Post #10: Our Place in Our Own Dystopia

Sci-fi dystopian futures have become the norm across most forms of media. Most dystopian lands are exaggerated forms of our present; they are created on the possible or most feared futures of our planet and lives. Dystopian films and TV series have become quite popular the last decades. Some people see them as warnings and others as mere entertainment. 

When I watched Dollhouse for the first time, I wasn't really thinking of it as a possible future, yet having re-watched it lately I can't help but wonder, "Could this really happen?" Then another question popped up, "Would it be a bad thing?" Admittedly, being implanted with multiple personalities or being in contact with a person that has an implanted personality sounds either dreamy or disgusting—depending on how you see it, but maybe this extremity will make us finally value the real person.

 We want to find the real person in the artificial, we want to find the pure part of humanity in the wildness and cruelty we've created. Maybe when we exceed the limit, we will find out. Maybe then we will be “we” and other. In Dollhouse, the doll Echo says, “All of them. I've been many people. I can hear them, sometimes suddenly. I'm all of them, but none of them is me. Do you know who's real?” Maybe only when we are not sure who's the real us, we will find us.
