Another doll line being discontinued

If you want a Doll Family-H 1/5 scale girl or boy BJD, you have until April 21, 2024. Then it's gone forever - thanks to recasters.

Recast buyers wonder why legit collectors get so angry? It's because recasts are ruining the hobby. So no, it's not a "live and let live" situation. It's a "If I tolerate your behavior, I am harmed" situation.

I have to save up for these dolls, if I want to purchase responsibly. Instead, I'm making stupid financial decisions and rushing to buy before a line disappears - and doll companies are discontinuing lines a LOT. Tell me when I can buy a Soom Tiny Gem. They haven't been available in forever - certainly not since I started collecting. Dollzone and Dream Valley are basically releasing limited dolls once, with one re-release if we're LUCKY, and then the dolls are gone forever.

Recast doll purchasers are directly responsible for disappearing doll lines. If they don't buy, there's no market for these dolls.

Mistakes happen. But people who actively, knowingly pursue buying recasts in the face of overwhelming evidence that they are RUINING the legit hobby? Screw them. They suck.

Also - recasts are ugly. Sorry, not sorry. That's why recasting companies steal pictures from Insta and doll companies. If they used their own pictures, people wouldn't buy. Still amazes me that people are willing to accept a bait-and-switch, just to save a buck or two.

I’m not sure why Dollzone discontinued Neveu so soon after release, but I’m always super grateful I was able to get an order in. This doll is so pretty. I’m thinking of trying to make some elf ears, as the snowflake ears are really pretty but maybe kind of limiting style wise?

Hello! Oldie Chinese Diaspora™️ Anon here. Thanks for the question! Nothing quite like a challenge, Anon, I had to go back and dig through my organic chemistry roots. But hopefully I can offer something that will put your mind at ease.

Medical waste comes in two broad categories, vinyl and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The Antu series, as far as I can glean, are made of ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) and PVC (as seen from the Dollection website https://www.mydollection.com/product-page/penny-s-box-penny-college-series This website said the hair is made of resin, but I don’t see that information repeated anywhere else. Therefore, I am going to assume it is a possible translation error). For comparison, the GSC Nendoroid dolls are completely made of PVC. This means we’ve already eliminated one category of potential waste; no vinyl in the Antu series.

Here comes the more chemistry-heavy part, so please bear with me.

PVC is a versatile and extremely useful material, therefore it’s ubiquitous in our daily lives. There are many forms of PVC, depending on the amount of plasticizer in the material – rigid PVC have less or no plasticizer present, while pliable PVC has more. Medical use PVC tend to favour the softer, pliable kind, whereas construction (like water pipes) tends to favour the rigid type. Toys are somewhere in the middle, depending on the design of individual items.

PVC plastic is useful because is actually recyclable. There are two main forms of recycling: Mechanical recycling (where you grind the old items into granules to be melted for later use) and “feedstock” recycling (where chemical reactions are involved to alter the types of PVC in the recycled products). Mechanical recycling is cheaper, but limited – you only get the same type of PVC as what you start with. If there is a mix of different PVC that went into the chompers, the end result is unstable and unpredictable. It greatly reduces the lifespan and utility of the resulting plastic. (More information here: https://www.bioenergyconsult.com/recycling-polyvinyl-chloride/ ) From what I can find on the Chinese illegal recyclers, they chose the easier, cheaper mechanical path (Once again, from this article here: http://industry.people.com.cn/n1/2019/0316/c413883-30979176.html ) It means the most likely scenario for the illegally-sourced medical waste was that it was ground into soft granules (possibly with some batch unpredictability, depending on if there was anything mixed into that batch.) This kind of granules are unsuited for small, semi-rigid toys (once again, think Nendoroids). From what little I know of the Antu series (I don’t have one and has no plans to get one), I am of an opinion that it’s highly unlikely that recycled medical waste went into their production. Besides, considering that it is a subdivision of Dollzone (apparently this is a spinoff series off of Dollzone’s Antu: http://www.acbjd.com/antu-p-12974.html?cPath=327_557 ), it’s even less likely that illegally-recycled medical waste went into these dolls.

Note 1: Medical waste are not allowed to be recycled due to potential contamination precautions. However, other types of PVC are perfectly good to be recycled. Please do not side-eye anything that contains “recycled PVC” because of the illegality of some unscrupulous bad actors.

Note 2: Apparently, the Antu series does contain ABS. Once again, ABS plastic is ubiquitous and extremely useful. However, ABS plastic does contain Bisphenol A (BPA). Therefore, as silly as I may sound, I do not recommend these dolls for children who may put these in their mouths. If anything, please recycle them properly when you no longer want to keep them as well.

Note 3: A number of legit resin companies are starting to venture into non-resin lines these days. Granado has their Vindoll line. Imomo and Kinoko Juice both have vinyl lines as well. I believe this is a way for these legit companies to pivot in the face of recasts (since there seem to be fewer recasts done in other materials around.) These lines are also more affordable than resin as well. I personally believe these lines are created to curb the flood of recasts. So please, if you are inclined, please give thought and hopefully support these ventures as well.

this is probably the largest amount of dolls/parts I’ve ever had on order, yikes. I hadn’t planned this at all, just things came back that I’d wanted before and things appeared that were, of course, limited. thank goodness for layaway; most of these are paid up, but if not for that option I definitely would’ve had to pass on some of them, just like I had to on Ren earlier this year.

in other news, we’ll be starting the sew pile next week if all goes well and I’m not busy.

Oh, earlier today, my brother started thinking about the new Dollzone boy. I told him about the tease and then about him being available. My brother doesn’t have a doll just yet, he ordered his first two last month, and both of those are 1/4. I happened to mention that I’m going to be finishing my two layaways next month, and he was like hmmmmmmmmmmm. Even did a tarot reading to take into consideration.

It only took me already being in the hobby for over a year before he finally joined himself, and he’s understanding what it’s like with all the dolls and the limited times and dolls getting discontinued lol

I don’t remember if I ever posted photos of my DollZone Mo-Wen on Tumblr. I didn’t make one until much later in life, and stopped taking photos of him for a long time -- these are from around 2006-2007, I first received him in November 2006. I stopped having an interest in BJD for a long while after I got my last floating head, I would say around 2-3-years worth of time. Then, I was in the process of modifying my Mo, and much later when I was bored one day I went to look for BJD news....

I was super sad and a bit surprised to learn when it was already too late, that DZ had discontinued Mo! I always felt like he was one of their more popular first sculpts they released (and that was partly why I wanted to mod mine). Since then, I felt like it was the wrong move to stop looking for BJD related news, even if I have no interest in purchasing more. Otherwise, I would have known he was being discontinued and I would have been able to purchased another head, or not attempted modifying mine in the first place (although, I would have probably gone for the former).

I love my Mo so much, but since I learned about his sculpt being discontinued, he has stayed in limbo since then. I feel like I want to try to work on him, but then I feel ambiguity because i don’t know if I should try to make him look different, which was my original goal. Or try to restore whatever little I can, since I did do subtractive mods on his face already. DX

I don’t regret any of the other modification I’ve done on my other heads, because I knew they were limited like my Minimee, or I had already modified the heads and then much later they were discontinued and I wasn’t able to afford a whole doll just for the head, like with my Mano. However, with Mo, I could have afforded the head, but didn’t know. So, it’s a bit more of a deep wound this time, because I could have had an unmodified Mo, and a modified one as well, had I not been stupidly away from the news!!! 

Anyone who read this whole essay about my feelings for my Mo-Wen who is in limbo now, thank you. I am kind of  very stressed right now, because I can’t sleep (story of my insomniac life!), and I was browsing through old photos of my dolls. I am just venting now, but I’d like to think I’ll come to a decent solution about this soon, hopefully not one that doesn’t include begging DollZone to sell me a Mo-Wen head sculpt, because I don't think they will. T_T;;

I let my neices into my doll room and they broke 4 of my dolls (1 dollfie, 2 obitsu, 1 dollzone tiny)and pulled apart multiple nendroids. I'm not angry because I know it is my fault for letting them in there. I fully accept that I took on that responsibility and risk by allowing them access . Im a complete pushover and too weak and pathetic to tell the family members "no." To them they are just dolls and dolls are supposed to be played with by little kids. I watched them in the room for the first hour+ and they were doing great, so I thought they'd be okay if I left them in there 15 minutes while I caught up up my brother who I had not seen in a year. They managed to grab my Mariko Sensei that I had specifically said not to touch 😭 There were many dolls off limits and I gave them the cheaper 50cm obitsus to play with. They didn't touch the dolls I said were off-limits until I left the room 😒 Whyyyy did it have to be Mariko Sensei? She is WS and finding a new upper frame is going to be impossible. The volks site only carries the 1 piece torso with a frame and none come in WS....and all the ones on mandarake sell out instantly it seems
