What I admire about Donald Fagen
What do I love about Donald Fagen's (of Steely Dan fame) lyricism? It's not visceral and straight-forward -- it's very layered, sardonic/sarcastic, humorous and distant (when writing about relationships), yet reveals a tremendous amount of emotion at the same time. It's visual without being blatantly obvious. I guess that's why I admire him so much, from a lyricism standpoint alone. It's lyricism that leaves questions unanswered. Musically, his proclivity towards unconventional chord progressions and complicated jazz chords, his love of black music, and the fact that he taught himself piano (to a very advanced level) without any formal instruction, further contributes to my esteem for him as an artist. This Jewish guy from New Jersey followed his passions, regardless how badly he hated his vocals. Lastly, how can you possibly not love an artist that once went through over 45 drummers (and numerous other instruments) just to find the perfect high hat and snare strokes? His perfectionism is probably unparalleled!
