Frankfurt We left our campsite and after a quick Lidl shop were on the motorway heading towards Frankfurt. As the city is in the low emissions zone, we headed to see Bieber, not Justin but the area of Offenbach which had a park and ride, offering free parking then a nearby train station. We bought day tickets for €9.35 each and headed in. We had a few places in mind to visit, so our luck was in when the onboard train announcement said the next stop was the European Central Bank. With a very short walk we took our snap and headed back to the station, as even for us access was restricted. With not long to wait we were on a train to the main station, where the tourist office sold us a map for 60 cents. We had read on Wikipedia that the city is split along the have's (it's a major financial centre), whereas the area around the station is definitely the have nots (lots of alcohol/drug misuse, sex shops and homelessness). So first impressions were not great but Richards tour would change that. Heading down to the River Main, we crossed a bridge to take in the view of the skyscrapers and walked alongside Museum Embankment, though being a Monday these were shut. We had also read online that the city had a reputation for apple wine, so headed to the apple wine district (yes really). It is marked by plaques with apples on them along the ground. We found one inn beside a statue of a spitting woman, where water actually comes out of her mouth. Richard is sure there was wine in the drink, but to me it was more like a vintage cider. Either way for €1.80 a glass it was worth trying. Crossing the main iron footbridge Eiserner Steg, we were in the old town. St Leonard's church erected in the 13th century was closed for refurbishment, we entered the Romerberg, the main square. Looking forward to seeing the Fountain of Justice, it was disappointed to see it too boarded up for maintenance. Romer itself is the town hall and is a house with a three gabled roof. Also in the square is the Royal palatine chapel and more half timbered houses which were reconstructed in 1986. The Emperors' Cathedral stands high in this part of town but to access the DonRomer quarter was no mean feat. The cathedral looked closed but after encircling it we found a way in. Continuing our church theme St Paul's church was next on the list, though now used by the city as a special events venue. Then into St Catherine's, Frankfurt's first Protestant church. The museum and house of author J W Goethe was close so we stopped to look. There was time to stop in Haupwache a square with many stalls selling food and drink, so we had a hot dog (well Frankfurter) before continuing. With it being such a financial centre we had to visit the Borse, Europe's second largest stick exchange, featuring the bull and bear statues in front if the building. We zig zagged a few streets to the Alte Oper, which as you may guess looked impressive, it was destroyed in World War Two and then rebuilt. With all that under our belt we jumped back on the train to Bieber, walked right up to the football stadium where we had parked and decided to...drive some more to save time tomorrow.

Sketching abroad, while wandering aimlessly in Germany.
.
I had an 8-hour layover in Frankfurt, Germany. This was my first time traveling by myself for a few days. I found it comforting to wander towards new places also to find wine bars or coffee shops to sketch or read. The rule was to always be sketching with either a glass of wine, beer, tea or coffee — well depending on the day or my mood.
